Gwendolyn was 13 when her dad shattered her heart, leaving her broken. Her mother told her, "a daddy can break a girl’s heart before any man has a chance," and she was right. Through many failed relationships and giving herself to any man who showed interest, she knew she had to get herself together. So, she gave up on men.Until Jacque. He came into her life with promises to love, honor and cherish her; forsaking all others until death do they part. Twelve years later, he has made good on his promises until he didn’t. Now, Gwen finds herself spiraling out of control and it’s bad. What she didn’t realize, Jacque was more broken than she was and had demons of his own. With inward fighting and outward consequences, will Gwen and Jacque recover or are they broken beyond repair?

I read this and thought OMG!!!! The faith and the life of God that this book carries!!! The stories that were told are what some of us live daily. Being broken and not knowing how to be set free is very draining. It’s takes a toll on your life relationship family and all, how do I know because I was broken. I didn’t know how to love or forgive myself. Daddy issues had me to where I was like Gwen! I had to learn to love myself and realize God has something greater for me!!!! Thank you for writing this book. The very first song that’s in it, what’s the name of it!! If you can please leave it on Facebook for me or something. You are an anointed writer and a warrior for the Lord!! Again thank you
I am always so excited when I see Pastor Johnson has authored a new book. I will say I am a Christian but I am still a work in progress. I enjoy these books because in my opinion even if you aren't a Christian or are new to Christianity these books don't come off as preachy. This book talks about living in your truth, standing strong in your faith, forgiveness and redemption. I also love that she incorporates therapy and church. As a lot of black folks tend to believe we only need the church to solve our problems. Gwen, Jacque & Gloria went through so much and I feel like everyone knows a Gwen, Jacque or Gloria.
Again I have never been abused, but I was denied a father he is living and has a whole family, I was mad at my mother for years because she had a affair for many years with this married man, and they cause slot of hurt to many people not just me by this affair, his wife knew about it and every time he had to go out of town she would cut her self, I always heard my mother laughing with her friends about it and I never understood why... so before she passed I forgave her for all this hurt she cause d me,I realized she was just looking for love and when she laughed about the wife she was trying to make her self feel better. I did try to make amends with my father in 2006 his cousin contacted me about they family reunion and asked me to come, at first I declined but then I said ok cause my kids needed to met they grandfather, and I wanted to apologize to the wife for my mothers behavior....it brought her and I close... but he don’t feel as if he has done anything wrong..so I’m asking for a pardon. Be bless
Title: Broken Author: Lakisha Johnson Publisher: Twins Write 2 Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Rating: Five Review: "Broken" by Lakisha Johnson
My Opinion:
'Broken' was some read of just what can happen to even adults that have lived through all of it from childhood as it was for Gwen, Jacque, Gloria, and Mark. What was so horrible about what two of these people had suffered through years of what had happened through actions with their father. For Jacque and Mark, their situation was just as sad. The thing that got me was that their parents [men] were ministers from a church.
This author gives the reader quite some read as her prayers and scriptures reach out to 'strengthen, uplift, and restore' as they did for some of the characters from this story. It was good seeing that, in the end, several of these horrible pedophiles got what they deserved. However, I was somewhat sad about Jacque's decision, but I guess, all in all, it was probably best due to how he had been raised.
Sisters Gwen and Gloria are left brokenhearted when their father abandons them to begin a new family. As a result, they both seek solace in others.
Then Gwen met and married Jacque. Unbeknownst to many, he just as broken as them, but for other reasons. His secrets begin to surface when he's caught in a very compromising position. This is when therapy and a relationship with God step in and the healing begins.
After several years, when Gwen and Gloria's father resurface, many more traumatizing secrets are revealed, and we find out just how sick this family is. Luckily, someone came forward and media attention brought focus on this case, which ultimately led to justice.
I couldn't believe that I read this 442 page book in one sitting, until I remembered who wrote it and how God speaks directly thru her. My favorite character would have to be Gwen and the least favorite is her pathetic father.
Once again, if you haven't read a book by @kishajohnson, what are you waiting for?!
The story is definitely one of a kind and explores taboo topics that are not as it relates to marriage, church , and African American relationships etc. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book because it was a page turner with all of the drama & secrets that were revealed.
I was recommended this read during a book club but as I mentioned in an update I felt the story was lengthy & at times repetitive. One of the things I noticed was the overuse of the word broken.
This is not my normal genre to read but it was different. I did like that she incorporated prayers as it relates to the characters and introducing the topics of therapy.
So conceptually I thought this was very creative it just lost my interest towards the end and I couldn’t finish it. I’m trying to do the review without spoilers so that is my take on it. I may revisit this or skim to see what the ending was 🙃
This book was inspiration, full of drama, suspense . The story was about church family being broken by church sisters . The bishops were only in the church for the money not to keep family together , but to molest young boys. Gwen and Gloria father is the bishop of his church he left his wife and daughter's for his wife best friend. Gwen was 13 years when Bishop David left she tried to reach out he shut her out . Gwen and Gloria went through so much abusive relationship until she met Jacques . They were married for 12 years before she found out he is gay. Gwen got pregnant by her gay husband. Her father came by Gwen house when Jacques open the door he sees Wayne who Gwen call David her father who Jacques reveal is his molester. This story was emotional . I hope all my friends will read it .
This was such a powerful story! Gwen and Jacque attempt to do life together but their lives are so broken. This is a story about confronting and identifying our own demons, restoration, healing and forgiveness. It even includes a plug about seeking therapy/counseling and journaling as a means to help in the healing process. This book touched on a taboo subject involving boys in the sex scandal in the church. The secrets ,lies ,deception and manipulation caused havoc in a lot of lives. The practical illustration of the Word and them powerful prayers were so on point! Two songs mentioned in the book ministered to me. This author touches on taboo subjects that are so realistic.
All of the main characters had some serious issues. I was a little frustrated with Gwen,Gloria and Jacque because at first they wanted to blame others for their brokenness. As they discovered through therapy, you knew right from wrong with the things you were doing and have to take responsibility. The two moms that knew what was going on and let it continue- shame on them. Their reasons were lame. In the end David and Mark,Sr. got what they deserve. This shows you that everything that appears holy, isn’t. Gwen, Gloria and Jacque got the help they desperately needed. Disappointed that Jacque did not want to be a parent to his son.
Once again this author has written a story that touched my soul. Storyline was well written and had me feeling as if I knew the characters as their situations were realistic. Good dialogue between the characters. Gwen and her sister Gloria had encountered so much grief throughout the years from the actions of their father. Jaque's situation was sad and shocking. Mark was ill. The prayers and scriptures discussed by Pastor Magnolia and the therapist were deep in meaning and had me praying with them for this family. Very good read
I would read Ms. Johnson's books for the prayers alone. No matter what state I'm in or whatever I am or am not going through, her prayers touch, strengthen, restore, uplift and more. In this book, I was continually reminded of Tasha Cobbs' 'Break Every Chain'. That's what the characters in this book sought out to do and the author successfully pounded this home for all of us who need to be reminded of who He is and how He never fails. All we have to do is recognize His power and surrender. Excellent writing and highly recommended.
This author is freaking amazing! The continous surprises had me not wanting to put it down. Jacque & Gloria are representations of the adults of today, broken. Their decisions as adults were directly related to their damaged childhood. Gloria though, she was a brave one. David & Georgia though, hell naw. David is the name my sperm donor, so yeah! Mark reminds me of my ex! Lakisha never disappoints! I love the motif of her novels: grace, mercy, restoration, brokenness, shattered mentally, etc. Shout to Pastor Reeves & Pastor Magnolia at High Point!
This book was very interesting and based solely on Christianity. It touched my heart in so may ways. The wife has things she needs to let go and let God and so does her husband. They bring these broken pieces into their marriage. It caused their marriage trouble and advently divorce .I love a book with more excitement. That didn't happen with this book .If you been trying to let go of the past and live again. This book is what you need you to read.
Lakisha has become one of my favorite author. I feel like everything she puts out I need to purchase it because it has a sceart message to me. Broken brought out feels and emotions that I never realized I was holding in; I always thought that I was okay because I don't talk about certian things, but in reality, I'm broken. Gwendolyn, Gloria, Jacque was all able to fix themselves through therapy and church.
This piece of writing was remarkable and unbelievable at the same times. One could question how do a father hate his children so much to do them this way and turn from them. As I read this I kept asking myself that question. All things are possible as we can see. Ms. Johnson hats off to you for another off the chart book. This will be one. I'm sure I will at sometime or another re-read it was just that good.
This book was so good. I laughed and cried. I felt so bad for Gwen, Gloria and her husband Jacque. I think God for you sharing this book so many people have been in this predicament. These parents were crazy I would never believe a man over my children. I'm happy all of them are on the road to being healed. David and Mark Sr need to rot in jail and be punished. Lakisha Johnson you have done it again. I love your books. Thanks for prayers and scriptures ☺️
I'VE YET TO READ A BOOK BY THIS LADY THAT YOU CAN'T APPLY THE THINGS YOU HAVE READ ABOUT TO LYFE... BEING BROKEN IS NO FUN LOOKING EVERY WHERE BUT WHERE YOU SHOULD (THE LORD) FOR THE PIECES TO FEEL WHOLE AGAIN OH BOY WHEN YOU FIND THE CORRECT PEACES IT IS A MIGHTY GOOD FEELING... SO GLAD HOW THINGS TURNED OUT FOR GWEN, GLORIA AND JACQUE .. MARK WAS A NUTTTTT
Anointed and appointed for times like these. Waukesha has mastered the art of touching Souls through her writings. God has blessed her to help restore mAny of us with God's Word and her wisdom from living this old life. This book encompasses restoration, enlightenment, and soul stirring deliverance if they are desired. Awesome scriptures and prayers.
I have been looking for a different book outside of the drugs, killing and baby mama drama and I FOUND IT!!! LaKisha Johnson book is the total opposite but still a good read with just enough drama, but has a Spiritual side to each book. I will continue to read more books by the author.
I thoroughly enjoyed the prayers, scriptures, and the sound spiritual advice in the book... But I pray that the author reads Romans 1 with an emphasis on the 26th and 27th verses. Some behavior encouraged in the book is not acceptable according to God's Word. I will not be reading and more of this author's books.
I don't really have much to say about this book but WOW ive cried and cried so many times to it not in a bad way but in a good way i love how inspirational it is and each and everything book always has scriptures of the Bible and also helps you to try and heal from any brokenness you may have had or are going through.
My Lord Lakisha ,I think every time I read something by you it touched me. But my Lord this book made me realize how broken I am. Even, with getting help with my issues I still needed more healing. This story had me replacing Gwen's name with mine. Thank you for allowing God to use you
I rated "BROKEN" 5 stars not just because it's a great storyline, but because it helped me to finally free (pardon) myself. I saw so much of myself in Gwen, the hurt and abuse, and truly understand her. Thank you Lakisha Johnson for penning something so wonderful. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I loved every part of the book all though I felt sad for both jacque and Gwen about both of their situations. I chose this rating because it not only tells a story it gives a message to those who are struggling in life. Great book and looking forward to reading more.
This book is a definite must read. I found myself getting emotional more than I even thought I would be. The last few chapters for the characters gets were very powerful, yet heartwarming.
If you truly open your heart and mind to the powerful words, then even you two can possibly be healed.
This was a great book. You never know what individuals go through when they are broken. The author did a great job showing different perspectives on how one heals from being broken. I look forward to reading more books by the author.
This has got to be the best book that I have read so far!!! My God, what a page turner. I could not put it down. You have written about a lot of people, including myself. Thank you and may God continue to bless you to write many more books! Blessings to you.
This was a great read it taught you about healing be broken and forgiveness. I loved the scriptures that were used and the author had me reading until it was finished.
My lord this was a god given intervention! This book has the power to help the reader to actually be free of been bound up! If you’re ready to really be healed or start working to healed from anything that has hurt you this is the book to read.
