Robert P. French uses this Cal Rogan novel to immediately follow the last, where the protagonist is in a heap of trouble for three murders he’s committed, one of which is the son of his own partner. While Rogan gets all that sorted, Nick Stammo opens a new case in which a wealthy woman is trying to locate her husband. It would seem he has been dodging her, which forces Stammo to wonder if there might be something he is not being told. When Rogan is able to return to the office, he sets out to locate Dale Summers, only to discover his body with a set of numbers carved into it. When the case seems open and shut, new evidence blows it wide open and Rogan is tasked with trying to find the murderer, working in tandem with his old partners in the Vancouver Homicide Squad. At the same time, Rogan is trying to bring his family closer together, though his ex-wife and daughter seem to have fallen off the radar. Could it be his past and the nature of his current work make them no longer interested in all the drama? As the homicide investigation heat up, Rogan takes on a case to help an elderly couple who were swindled. Thinking that this will be a simple bullying of a con man, Rogan rushes to a fundamentalist church to tighten some thumb screws, but soon discovers there is more to the story. Meanwhile, lurking in the background, the son of a powerful drug dealer that Rogan killed is plotting his revenge. He’s decided to strike at Rogan’s weakest point, in hopes of sustaining the most pain. Powerfully written and keeping the reader alert to developments from all perspectives, Robert P. French knows how to tell a marvellous tale. Recommended to those who love a high-impact crime thriller, as well as the reader who cannot get enough of Canadian settings for their mysteries.

I have been waiting for French’s novels to link together so closely and it has been worth the delay. Picking up a week or so after the last novel, the story runs together nicely and pits Rogan against the VPD and a man seeking revenge. All the while, he must locate his family before he loses them forever. Cal Rogan remains a great protagonist in this piece, pushing the limits with his detective abilities, as well as keen sense of danger. He is committed to the cause of the cases brought before him, able to pick up on some of the nuances effectively. However, there is the need to protect his family, even if they are not on the same page, as these are the women who matter most to him. Rogan juggles work, family, and a spark of love interest in this piece, balancing them as best he can. Nick Stammo leads a strong cast of supporting characters, offering up the right colouring for the narrative to flow with ease, while finding new ways to surprise the reader with personal revelations. I am eager to see where this partnership will keep going, as I have seen some great development between these two men, even with the obvious strains that have come to the surface. The story is strong and picks up effectively from the end of the last novel. There is so much going on and so little time that the reader must dive right in. With a mix of perspectives throughout the varied length chapters, the reader gets a full view of the cases as they come to life. French uses his stellar skills to keep the reader wondering until the very end, and the action continues even there. I cannot wait to get to the latest book in the series—especially with the cliffhanger French left—as this binge keeps getting better with each added novel.

Kudos, Mr. French, for another fast-pace novel that kept me fully committed.

You know those books (or movies) which foreshadow early on that something truly awful is going to happen to the chief protagonist, and as it starts you sit there on the edge of your seat going “oh no, OH NO”? That’s this book 😳. And when the tension becomes unbearable you have to take little breaks to calm your nerves? That’s this book!

At the end of the previous book there was a shootout and some baddies got killed. The son of the killed crime boss is out to avenge his father’s death and his plans for Cal Rogan are horrific. This is not a spoiler, it comes pretty early in the story.

Meanwhile Cal and Stammo have a new case. The wife of a well connected businessman, Dale Summers, asks them to find out what is going on with her husband. He seems to have disappeared. It is not long before Cal stumbles on the man’s body - dead and branded with a cryptic reference - 20:13.

Cal is unaware of the threat to his family, ex-wife Sam and daughter Ellie. Luckily Sam is on the ball and goes into hiding with Ellie. Cal continues to investigate the murder of Dale Summers which opens up a whole rat’s nest of unintended consequences and corruption but brings him no closer to identifying the killer.

This is adrenalin fuelled mayhem and was very exciting to read. Poor Cal is not having much luck with his love life and Stammo reveals a big, BIG secret. The other issue burbling away under the surface is what will Stammo reveal in questioning when Cal goes to court for killing Stammo’s son Mark (also in the previous book). Plenty of unknowns to keep you guessing. This is a great series. 4.5 stars for this book.

Another Wild Ride!

This series just gets better with every new book. The players, both new and old, are well developed, bringing out personalities and emotions that are contagious. There are folks to love and folks to hate here, and a few that may make you feel both. Plot development will keep you guessing until the end. A roller coaster of action awaits, as you ride the highs and lows with Rogan and Stammo and their new treasure, Adry. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

This book starts out right where Lockstep leaves off. It isn’t really necessary to read that book first, just know that there were some unresolved issues. Cal is being investigated for killing a drug king pin. This does not make the cartel too happy, so they will be after him. His ex-wife Sam, who he had just gotten back together with, rightly thinks that she and their daughter Ellie are in danger, so they disappear. All of these are enough to keep the reader from coming to conclusions about the current case. Rogan and Stammo are hired to find a woman’s husband. The husband turns up dead and there is no end of candidates for the job. Besides the continuing action for Lockstep, there is lots of action during this investigation and some subplots to keep it from getting too tense, all very well woven together!

Loved the book. I was kept thinking until the author decided to let me in on the final twist. I really enjoy how Stammo, Cal & now Adry interact with each other and how each contributes to the solution. I wish the next book was ready so I could see where it goes from here. The ending has left me wanting to know what happens next.

Robert P French – Cal Rogan Mysteries Bk 4 – Three – Reviewed 8/4/20 – Read 7/31-8/1/20

When your husband ignores you, but you are runway model beautiful, what can you think?

Nick Stammos greets the new client, as Cal Rogan is late for the meeting. Cal’s friend Arnold Young had referred her to them and spoke very highly about both men and the firm. Marly Summers is an exceptional beauty and Nick is stunned by her. The beautiful young woman is embarrassed as she explains why she would like to engage their help in finding out what is going on with her husband. Her husband is from a moneyed family and works at one of the top five accounting firms in Vancouver. As she leaves, she meets Cal at the outer door. Cal had just been released from spending a week in jail, the VPD had charged him with the murder of a local drug king and two others. One of which was Nick’s estranged son. Things are very tense between the two men, and Nick still is unable to discuss the death of his son with Cal.

Cal heads over to Sam’s house so that he can let her know that they had dropped two of the charges, also is lawyer thinks that he can get the other one dropped too. He is worried about Sam, as she was with him when he was arrested. After ringing the bell several times, he realizes that she is not there. Stepping over to the neighbor’s house, Cal finds out that they are gone. Sam had instructed Cora Hunt, her neighbor to not tell anyone where they had gone. Cal is stunned!!

And now the story begins…

What did I like? As you probably remember from my review of the previous three books, I have fallen in love with the characters in this series. My heart broke with his drug addiction but filled with happiness when he entered the drug rehab. Cal is trying so hard to get on with his life and bringing his family back together again. He finally, has connected with Sam, and again his job has broken them apart. Because of his relationship with Nick being on shaky ground due to Mark’s death, he needs Sam and Ellie more than ever. Now, as we watch him start this new case, plus add his worry of his family, you will feel the tension mount. The way that Robert pulled out all the stops for Cal and Nick, helping each other through this mess they find themselves in, is just short of amazing!

What will you like? Incredible action, intricate mystery, absolutely an awesome storyline, and more twists, turns, and jumps than a Mexican jumping bean. Some of the most astonishing characters, even the bad guys are amazing. A beautifully written and edited storyline, that will have you on the edge of your seat all the way through. I recommend that you have a box of tissues handy for this whole series. With each book so far, I have been either crying from happiness or sorrow, but dang, I could not put them down either. Loved the style of writing and especially his use of POV. I finished this one and jumped right into book 5, Cabal! Wow, I cannot wait! This is an excellent series that will keep you up at night! For sure, this is another great addition to your Mystery library!

Set in Vancouver. 404 pp. This takes place about a week after the ending of Lockstep. However, at no point in the first 50 pages is anything about mentioned. And he’d been in jail for most of that week. Plot hole, or did I miss something in Lockstep? … Ok, on p. 109: “As you didn’t check into a hospital, there is no proof he shot you at all.”

Also, I appreciate Carl’s beer choices.

Ch. 46 wha?????? Well, then p. 324. That was… surprising.

And the ending? Noooooooooooooooooo!

Fast passed

I enjoyed this book but was disappointed with the ending. For once I would like to see Cal have some good in his life. He is a good man seeking justice and his ex-wife doesn’t give him a break. His choice of the other women he has dated has been horrible also. To have it end with him spiraling back into his addiction was very frustrating. Being very familiar with addicts and their recovery I know it is rare for heroin addicts to clean up, never mind bounce back and forth in recovery as Cal is portrayed to do here. Relapse is common, but heroin addicts rarely bounce back. I hope his life becomes a little better in the next book!

Cal was involved in a crime lords death and they threatened to go after his wife and daughter Elle. So She took Elle and left and went to the unknown. No one knew where they were. Cal kept trying to find out where they have gone. Cal and his partner were working to find out who committed a murder. In the mist of that he comes across a church swindling people out of lots of money. Be prepared when they describe the deaths of some gay men. He gets involved with another lady named Em for short since his wife said she cant ever come back to him. The ending was a shock. I must say the ending left me hanging on a limb , does he or doesnt he go on.

Wow

Each book is a walk through the life of Cal Rogan, former Vancouver Police Dept detective, former husband, dad without custody, current private detective, friend and hopefully, a recovering junkie. There is so much intensity with multiple investigations going on and so well written you become that fly on the wall, seeing and experiencing it all. It's hard to wait to rejoin Cal and see which way his life turns next but I can highly recommend you begin this series that starts with Junkie.

Abso love Cal Rogan

From the very first chapter I was hooked. So I read the 2nd book, then the 3rd and now the 4th. Glad I read them one after the other as I found the books didn't quite have a definite ending and the story continued and finished in the next book. But that just made me want to read the next book. Cal Rogan is a character that you just fall in love with and are rooting for him in every way. Stammo isn't so bad either. Yes, I would recommend and yes, I now can't wait for the next book.

Stammo and Rogen are at it again. They get a client whose husband has disappeared. Then things get complicated. The detective team get hired by three people to investigate the same case...then more bodies start turning up, all with the same disfiguring burns. There are more possible killers and suspects than you can shake a stick at. The characters were extremely well-written. Every time I thought I had it figured out, another possible suspect was thrown in...I admit, I never figured it out!!!

Another Great Ca!l Rogan Adventure!!!

Excellent writing and development of the story! Wonderful characters, love Ellie! I just hope Cal does not gives into the beast again! The guy needs a break for heaven's sake! That would be a little win for Carl and us at least until the next beast attack.
Let Ellie be his guiding light!!! Can't wait until the next book!! Thank you Robert for another great story!! Keep them coming!!!

Hooked on the series

I discovered this series a week ago and have ripped through them, grabbing a few more pages every time I have a spare moment. While Cal’s self destructiveness annoys me, there is so much about these books that I enjoy. The premise and plots are compelling and keep me going even on elements that I don’t like, which speaks highly of French’s skill. I am looking forward to starting book five later today.

I liked this one. I thought it was well written, had a great plot, and it kept me guessing. I liked how Cal was the one to fall for the killer this time, though I'm still pulling for him and Sam. I'm really hoping he can kick this drug addiction though the ending didn't imply that he would anytime soon. I'm anxious to start reading the next one !

This is the second Cal Rogan book I have read and you don’t have to read them in order. Once again I couldn’t put it down. It had me guessing who the culprit was and had a lot of people it could be. All believable characters. A great read for all thriller fans. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Good reading

Nothing in this book seems extraordinary, even if the main theme is pushed to the limit, but it makes for a good read. Mental and physical burdens are put on the back burners in order to enable clever investigations. There is love, hate, prejudice, manipulation, greed, sanity and humour in this well written story.

A great story. 4*+
I really enjoyed this book although I felt as though something was missing. It's my own fault. I've not read any of the previous books in the series and didn't have the pleasure of character development and the back story of the protagonists. However, it was an intriguing and exciting plot with engaging characters. It got very tense the more I read and had a terrific ending.

Good, but

The story is relatively good if you can follow the different points of view up until torture is incorporated. And then there are the beatings. And a side of love lost but there is no time to waste. Lets go on to the next love (physical) in our lives. I will get the next book but may to see if I can enjoy the twists and turns.

Again, an okay read

It is getting hard to place any of Cal's adventures in reality of any sort. It is a reader's ability to insert yourself into a story and believe what is happening, unfortunately it is very hard to continue to do this.

Cal’s addiction is singing its siren song. Murders and clues abound. Action galore. Good story and surprises. The last lines of the story make you gasp. Can’t wait to read the next installment. Start the series from the beginning, “Junkie”.
