He has one last chance to save his mind. Too bad it’s all a lie…

Pete Rivers is a survivor. Forced to endure an abusive childhood, he turned to a life of crime. When his egregious scams earned him fifteen years in prison and a mandatory brainwashing at the end of his sentence, he began searching for a way out to no avail. So when he’s offered a loophole that reduced his prison time and kept his mind intact, he took it without thinking twice.
He soon discovers that The Draxler Program isn’t the criminal reform program he was sold; it’s a reality TV show. Like himself, the other contestants are convicted felons, and their lives rest in the hands of the voting public. The winner gets to keep their mind, while the losers are doomed to an early trip to the washer.
Does Pete have what it takes to survive the demented show, or will his brain get erased like the contestants before him?

Malcolm’s debut novel is an action-packed, psychological thriller that will keep you guessing all the way to the last page.

I like the concept of this book. There is a fun twist. It’s just that the writing is not good, imo. Saying that makes me feel cringy, but there were so many parts of the writing that were cringey too.

Thank you to author IQ Malcolm for a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.

“I believe we all experience cruelty at some point in our lives. Regardless of how abhorrent our previously suffered cruelties were, nothing seems as devastating as the cruelty of the present.”

This is such an accomplishment for a debut novel. Taking place in a futuristic distopia, Pete Rivers, a convicted con artist who has already served a few years in prison, is faced with an opportunity to take place in The Draxler Program. Designed to alleviate inmates of longer sentencing in return for penance, Pete figures this is a much easier route than accepting the inevitable brainwashing at the end of his normal sentence. But what Pete soon discovers is that the Draxler Program is actually a hit TV reality show, and he is one of the main stars, where only one winner of the show gets to avoid their brainwashing.

Malcolm thought up one of the most unique and creative plot lines I have read to date. I don’t read many Utopian or distopian novels, but I usually have a lot of fun when I do. I like the fact that The Draxler Program forced me to completely defy reality, such as The Hunger Games or Divergent, but included an element of adult themes as well. Most of these types of novels are geared toward the YA demographic, and it was refreshing to read one that included more mature situations and adult dialogue. Pete’s turbulent childhood was also a very, very relevant inclusion that I think definitely enhanced this story.

This book was very action packed, quit-witted, and fast moving. The relationship between characters was always believable and growing, especially Pete and Ivy’s. I enjoyed following along with these characters and being unable to guess their next moves. I love when characters’ decisions shock me throughout a book. I was also really impressed by the final twist. Although I had an inkling of a guess, I wasn’t totally correct in the way it was executed. Despite unrealistic, it still made me, as a reader, ponder the ideas of justice and retribution.

Perhaps my only qualms of The Draxler Program include the lack of timeline the reader is offered and the often “creative writing class” sounding paragraphs. It took me a while to determine whether or not this book took place the future or not. Though I eventually realized it was, a quick reference to the current state of the country would have been helpful to aid in the visuals. Additionally, there were too many sentences, especially between dialogue, that made frivolous similes or metaphors, and were borderline distracting to their scenes. But other than that, I was truly impressed with this debut novel and I hope Malcolm continues writing and sharing his work with me. This novel was worthy of becoming and movie and I can’t wait to see what content he produces in the future!

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review- thank you I.Q. Malcolm!

The Plot: Pete Rivers is a convicted con artist who has been in jail for several years. The book takes places in the future, where prisoners must undergo a lobotomy before they are “freed.” However, Pete is given the opportunity to join a 3-year reform program (The Draxler Program), which, if completed, would absolve him of the lobotomy and an immediate release. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Pete joins, but he soon finds out that he is actually part of a popular reality show, in which only one prisoner is able to escape the brain washing and be released (all of the “losers” have their lobotomies filmed for the show). Can Pete, with the help of the show’s producer and another prisoner, escape in time?

My Thoughts: I was super impressed with this book, especially being that it is from a debut author. It is fast-paced, and the storyline was very unique from anything I’d read before. For a 250 page book that is very plot-driven, the characters were well-developed. I also was not expecting the plot twist! My only qualms were that the similes and metaphors -which, while they did make me laugh at times, seemed forced and took away from the storyline. I also hoped for a different outcome for the ending- but perhaps this was a set up for a sequel? Overall, I definitely recommend The Draxler Program, and look forward to what is to come for Malcom!

This was just okay for me. 2.5 stars. It was an interesting idea. Set in a future that isn't too different. Those in prison will be "reset" ... their "brain washed" and basically lobotomized, after they serve their sentence. Instead, our protagonist is offered a different option, "The Program" in which his criminal tendencies will be replaced with "good human" ones. Or so he thinks. It's actually a reality TV program, with a bunch of criminals being "voted off" to brain washing, with one "winner".

While I wasn't exactly sure where the story was heading, and I can't say I called anything for sure ... I also wasn't at all surprised at any twists and turns along the way either. They were almost expected.

I think I just struggled a bit with the writing. It didn't quite have the flow to draw me in, make me forget I was reading and get lost in the story. I was critiquing little things as I went along. Like at the beginning, as Pete meets the counselor "Part of me wanted to reach across the desk to touch her hand in a sign of support" and then just a little later "I fought the urge to touch her hand to show my condolence." This guy REALLY wants to touch her hand. He also really doesn't like PT Cruisers, described as "a shithole on wheels that shouldn’t have been invented in the first place and had no right to still be in existence now" ;) Pete's insistence that he not be called a "con man" but a "confidence artist" was grating. I kind of wanted to slap him. Ivy ... one of the guy character's last name, and how they referred to him. I kept having to remind myself Ivy was a guy. There were some sections that made me shake my head "She stopped dead in her tracks. I wasn’t sure if it was the sight of the deceased security guard or my gun being pointed at her, but something about us terrified her" Hmmmm ... a woman witnessing a man with a gun next to a dead body is frightened for some reason. "The door clicked as it unlocked, and she immediately yanked it open before it could lock again" just seemed overkill in its explanation ... she unlocked and opened the door.

Then ... there were the similes. SO. MANY. SIMILES. Some were super standard ones, other's were quite a bit more creative, on the silly side: My sense of urgency grew faster than the Grinch’s heart on Christmas day. The audience cheered louder than a stadium full of adolescent girls at a boy band concert. We were about as screwed as a turtle on its back. Realization hit me like a bidy shot from a heavyweight champion. His breath reeked like a bloated orca decaying on the beach. I froze in place like a turd in a Canadian outhouse. Like an inexperienced explorer raiding their first booby-trapped tomb, I placed my foot in the wrong spot. Excess skin made him look like Jabba the Hutt after two successful months on a paleo diet. My mind raced for answers like a detective on speed. He looked like the deranged uncle of an Oompa Loompa who had joined the men in black. I toppled over like the world's worst Weeble. He had hair redder than the devil’s dick.

... and then the ending. Spoiler ...

I received the audio version for free in exchange for an honest review. I was glad I was also able to nab the Kindle copy as part of Kindle Unlimited, as it's very helpful for me to have a text copy to make notes and refer back to. Hard to do with audio alone.

"Nothing shatters quite as painfully as hope."
set in a near future or alternate world system, very similar to our own, but where convicted repeating criminals are mind 'washed' after serving their sentences, to spend the remainder of their lives as near mindless drones. Peter has a!ready served part of his prison time as a convicted confidence artist when he is offered a possible way out of the much feared brainwashing: a tough and radical three year reform program for a few selected prisoners, which, if successfully accomplished, promises released without mindsetting. There is a downside: failure within the Draxler program results in the earlier ending of prison time and immediate 'washing', but success would mean freedom in just three years. Despite the probable hardships, it sounds too good to be true. And as any good conman should know, if it sounds too good it probably is.

This fast action novel follows Peter as he meets fellow Draxler candidates and learns that all is not as it has been said to be. Like Peter, the reader is taken through a journey of trying to survive in situations which seem to alter perspectivd. The characters are interesting, though not always empathic or fully deve!op-ed although the excellent narration of Leslie A.Rice very much helps to give them substance, each protagonist portrayed individually, and Mr.Rice's rounded, deep and honeyed voice perfectly suited for Peter, from whose point of view the story is written. A good overall performance, read with emotional connection to the text.

My thanks to the rights holder of The Draxler Program, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. It was a very enjoyable listen and, although different in content, reminded me of the film, The Game, 1997, starring Michael Douglas - the feeling of life being out of control. This is certainly a book I would recommend to readers who enjoy their thrillers to be a little bit different and one which I might possibly return to re-read in the future.

Riveting, exciting, and unexpected. I flew through this story.

C.A.C: Contains Animal Cruelty.*

"The problem with most of the monumental moments in life is we don’t realize they’re occurring in the moment."

Peter Rivers has a problem, and he finds out there may be an unusual solution available to him to fix it. He is offered a position in a program to allow him a chance at becoming a better man. Once he agrees it all moves along quickly. Things take a turn fast, with program rules and an implant.

"Oh, I understood all right. I understood that they restrained and tagged me like they would a wild animal, and they even had the foresight to give me an on-off switch."

I loved the story, the uniqueness of the concept, the twists, and that I was not able to one hundred percent figure out the ending. This is definitely a book you don't want to miss.

*It is short and not overly discriptive, but still a bit difficult to read if you're sensitive to animals.

Thank you I.Q. Malcolm for this free review copy!

The Draxler Program by I.Q. Malcolm was full of suspense and surprise. I had a hard time getting into it and connecting with the characters at first. BUT I kept moving and before I knew it I was hooked! I enjoyed Pete's sarcasm and Malcolm's ability to give each character distinguished personalities that stayed consistent throughout the entire book. Just when I thought I could predict what was happening, everything changed! There were areas that I wished Malcolm would have focused less on and areas where I wished he would have spent more time on, but overall it was a solid 4 star read. Plus, the added Harry Potter reference was AMAZING!

I.Q. Malcolm is a seriously talented debut author and I'm excited to see what Psychological Thrillers he writes in the future.

Before I write the review, I would like to thank IQ Malcom for his generosity in giving me the book to read and review. He is clearly a very passionate author!

I was initially very intrigued by the topic of this book. Thrillers are generally my go-to genre and I love a good plot twist. The stage was set right away, but carried on without much suspense. I enjoyed the little clues that were given in each chapter that lead to the final solution, and there was definitely an attempt to leave the reader hanging at the end of the chapter. Things seemed pretty stagnant until the last few chapters where it really took off. I could barely put the book down and was excited to see how it ended. I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending, but was I was thrown for a twist for sure.

Overall, a very quick and intriguing read and I would definitely be interested in reading more of his novels!

I received a free audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I liked the story & concept, which I think is the saving grace in my giving it 3 stars. However, if I'm being honest, I was not a fan of the style of writing. It fell flat a bit for my tastes. it just wasn't as complex of a story as I prefer.

However, my bigger issue was with the narration. While the narrator wasn't bad, and I did like the different character voices, the production quality of the audio wasn't great. The sound quality wasn't consistent - sometimes sounding tinny, something cutting away with a different background feel than 2 sentences earlier. And in chapter 12, there was a thumping or tapping noise which really distracted from an important part of the story.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

The Draxler Program, an action-packed and fast-paced thriller, raises curiosity and builds anticipation from the very first page. Pete Rivers is a convicted con artist. For a chance at redemption and to avoid a brainwashing, he must enter into The Draxler Program. When Rivers finds out the program is also a reality TV show where the public has the power to vote for early brainwashing, he must do everything he can to earn his freedom before losing his memory.

IQ Malcolm created a marvelous story with intriguing characters. The development of the plot was fantastic, and I felt sucked into the story immediately. The scenes contained action around every corner and dialogue filled with emotion. Pete Rivers appeared to be the focus of the character development, but it made me feel attached to Pete. I felt invested in his story and what happened to him. I also love a good twist, and IQ Malcolm delivered. I never saw the ending coming and my mind is still reeling over it!

This was an enjoyable read from start to finish. I rated it just short of five stars because of the description of the setting. Attention to detail focused primarily on action and characters, but little was paid to the surroundings. I often struggled to envision the details of where Pete was.

Overall, The Draxler Program exceeded my expectations. I had a blast reading it. I highly recommend this one!
