(Throwback Review) "When a girl is alone, it's not an opportunity but a responsibility."

I heard this sentence for the first time in early 2017 in one of Joseph Annamkutty's video. I noticed the zeal in his words and his ebullient and egalitarian nature. This book is dealing with the above sentence in detail. This guy later became a social media sensation and also wrote a couple of memoirs (one in English and one in Malayalam) at such a young age. If you are from Kerala there is no need to introduce him as you might be already familiar with him due to his following endeavours.



I am writing the review of his second book here in English (even though the book is in Malayalam) due to a request from my friend who doesn't know Malayalam and wants to know more about Malayalam books.

I was thinking of what can a Millenial who is so young write in his memoir. I was amazed when I read this book. I had to ask myself what was not there in this book. Joseph is enlightening us about all the following topics and much more

He has an erudite personality which equipped him the ability to discuss the crux of a book in just one or two sentences. His ability to convert esoteric concepts to simple ones in an indulgent manner is praiseworthy.

The author tells us to follow these principles in our daily life, especially when we are sharing something in social media. Before we are sharing a Facebook post or WhatsApp video, ask the above three questions to yourself.

One of the rare negatives I found in this book is that the author is not able to execute some of the things which he is saying in this book. Every human behaviour comes out of the "Pain or gain" principle. The biggest demotivation occurs when the pain is higher than the gain. The biggest motivation occurs when the gain is more than pain. Even if the gains mentioned in this book are the tangible and intangible ones, we can clearly say that in every situation, the gain is much more than pain here. The best part is that the author doesn't show the hypocrisy and is genuinely able to acknowledge his setbacks. He is trying his best to practice what he preaches and is working hard to overcome his setbacks, acknowledging his failures. We can hope that not only the author but also all the readers of this book will be successful in overcoming all the obstacles to anchor the ship of their life in the shore of benevolent, altruistic unfathomable success.

I hope that the English translation of this book will be releasing soon so that more people will be able to read it. I can incontrovertibly say that you will definitely love this book and the author if you read this book with an open mind.

So far there isn’t an official English title for this book. I don’t know what to call it – “Spies of God” or “God’s Spies” ? Let me start off by saying that I am not a die hard fan of Joseph Annamkutty Jose. Also I have not seen a single video of his. But I had the opportunity of attending one of his talks during Kerala Literature Festival – 2019 at Kozhikode, and I would like to add here that I am well aware of his influence on the youth of the state. Also I did come across his first book – ‘Buried Thoughts’ almost a year back, but gave up half way without finishing it. So yes, this is my first book by the said author and I liked it. Yes, you heard me right – I loved the book.

I started reading this one with a lot of prejudice and my mind full of reservations. I kept wondering what could he possibly be saying in this book that is so great or life changing. I was not wrong, but my expectations were. See, it’s not that Joseph delivers earth shattering revelations about life, relationships and love, but rather he takes the mundane, everyday aspects from his life and highlights them. I am not calling his experiences ordinary, nor am I downplaying them. The point I’m trying to make here is that we need to see the people in our lives for what they are, appreciate them, respect them and try to love them a little, if you can – in essence through this book he asks us to see the beauty in the ordinary

The choice you make between hating and forgetting - can become the story of your life.

Some quotes will catch you, because it is related with you through a person or event.

Honestly I didn't like each and every chapter of the book. Few chapters, i liked very much. Few were completed for the sake of reading.

Why I liked few chapters is because, there will be some point in everybody's life where they can feel the emotion. But they won't be able to express ot through words. They are not able to express it. People do have dilemmas. It will become crystal clear and evident when they are able to define it. Like some one said, every solution lies in the question and questioner itself. Defining problem is the most important task.
I believe, some of your frank explanations helped me to give me a better idea.

And one more thing loved is your way of explaining how much experience matters. What ever be the incident. It defines you. It moulds you. It matters a lot.

This book being my first one of 2020 and the first book I am reading of the author, I wasn't sure of what to expect. Let us say, the book did take me by surprise. Written in simple malayalam that was easy to read and has a great reach, every chapter is a reflection on Joseph's own life and how the characters he met in his life probably worked as God's arms willing him to do something. The portrayal of his relationship with his family and friends is commendable. The greatest win of this book is probably the fact that Joseph is able to appeal to the younger and older generations alike with his simple take on life's little happenings.

Definitely goes to show that the author is good not just with though provoking videos but would make a great writer too.

പിന്നെ ജോസഫ് അന്നം കുട്ടി ജോസിന്റെ " ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ചാരന്മാരുമായി" ഒറ്റ ഇരിപ്പായി. പതിവായി കാണുന്ന ഒരു യൂട്യൂബ് ചാനലാണ് രെമ്യ മോഹൻദാസിന്റെ പുസ്ത നിരൂപണങ്ങൾ. രെമ്യ സ്വതസിദ്ധമായ ആ കോഴിക്കോടൻ ഭാഷയിൽ ആ പുസ്തകത്തിന് intro നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നു.ആ വീഡിയോ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ മുതൽ മനസ്സിൽ വിചാരിച്ചതാണ് എങ്ങനെ എങ്കിലും ജോപ്പന്റെ ആ പുസ്തകം ഒന്ന് തീർക്കണം . kindle ബുക്ക് സ്റ്റോറിൽ അതിന്റെ ഇ-ബുക്ക് അവൈലബിൾ അല്ല എന്നു മനസിലായപ്പോൾ ഒരു pdf സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചു അത് നേരെ ibooks-ൽ സേവ് ചെയ്തു വായന ആരംഭിച്ചു. അതിലെ ഒരു 100 പേജ് വരെ ഞാൻ ജോപ്പനൊപ്പം സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നില്ല ജോപ്പനിലൂടെ എന്നെ തന്നെ കാണുകയായിരുന്നു. 80 പേജ് ഒക്കെ ആയപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ഓർത്തു പുസ്തകം മടക്കട്ടെ???
കാരണം ജോപ്പൻ തന്റെ അപ്പനെ കുറിച്ച് വിവരിക്കുന്നത് എന്നെ ഇമോഷണലി ഒത്തിരി എവിടെയോ എത്തിച്ചു, ഞാൻ അറിയാതെ എന്റെ അപ്പനും ഞാനും തമ്മിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ആ ബന്ധത്തെ ഒന്ന് തട്ടിച്ചു പോയി, ഞാൻ വിതുമ്പി എന്നല്ല പൊട്ടി പൊട്ടി കരഞ്ഞു എന്നു തന്നെ വേണം പറയാൻ. ജോപ്പന്റെ പല വീഴ്ചകളിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ ചില സമീപനങ്ങൾ പോലെയായിരുന്നു എന്റെ അപ്പൻ എന്നോടും പുലർത്തിയിരുന്നത്. ജീവിതത്തിൽ മറക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത ഒരു സംഭവം SSLCപരീക്ഷയുടെ തലേ ദിവസം നടന്ന സംഭവമാണ്, അന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾ കുടുംബ വീട്ടിൽ താമസിക്കുന്ന കാലം റിസൾട്ടിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചു എന്നെ അല്പം കാര്യമായി തന്നെ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങൾ കളിയാക്കി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു അതിനു പ്രതികാരമായി ഞാൻ വീടിനു പുറകിൽ പോയി എന്നെ തന്നെ ഹിംസിക്കുന്നു ഇതെല്ലാം കണ്ടു വരുന്ന അപ്പൻ.പതിവിനും നേരത്തെ അന്ന് അപ്പൻ ജോലിയിൽ നിന്നും വന്നത് ഓർക്കുന്നു കൂടുതലൊന്നും പറയാതെ ഒരു മൺവെട്ടിയും എടുത്തു എന്റെ കയ്യിൽ കോട്ടയും തന്നു മുകളിലത്തെ പറമ്പിൽ നട്ടിരുന്നു കപ്പയ്ക്ക് വളമിടാൻ കൂട്ടികൊണ്ടു പോയി , പോയ വഴിക്കു സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ അന്വേഷിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. കാര്യം കൂട്ടുകാരനെപോലെ എന്നെ കൊണ്ട് നടന്നിരുന്നു എങ്കിലും അപ്പൻ ഒരു ക്ഷിപ്രകോപിയായിരുന്നു അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ മാർക്കിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചു അപ്പന്റെ പ്രതികരണം എങ്ങനെ ആയിരിക്കുമെന്ന് എനിക്ക് അല്പം ആശങ്ക ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.പക്ഷെ അപ്പന്റെ മറുപടി എന്നെ അതിശയിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു കിട്ടുന്ന മാർക്ക് മതിയാടാ എന്തായാലും കളക്ടർ ആകാനൊന്നുമല്ലല്ലോ പോകുന്നത്. ആ ഒരു താങ്ങു ജീവിതത്തിലുടനീളം അപ്പൻ തന്നിരുന്നു, എന്റെ വീഴ്ചയിലും പരാജയത്തിലുമൊക്കെ അപ്പൻ തന്ന താങ്ങാണ് എന്നെ ജീവിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു.
ജീവിതം എന്ന മൂന്നക്ഷരത്തെ മരണമെന്ന മൂന്നക്ഷരത്തിനു നൽകി എന്റെ അപ്പൻ ഞങ്ങളുടെ കൊച്ചു വീടിന്റെ പടി ഇറങ്ങിയിട്ട് ഈ ജൂൺ മാസത്തിൽ ആറു വർഷം ആകുന്നു....
ആ മരിക്കാത്ത ഓർമകളെ ഒരു നിധിപോലെ സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന എന്റെ മനസിന്റെ ഓർമ്മകൾ എന്ന നെരിപ്പോടിനെ ഒന്നുകൂടി ഇളക്കി കത്തിക്കാൻ ജോപ്പന്റെ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന് കഴിഞ്ഞു....

"ഈ ചെറിയ ജീവിതത്തിൽ എന്തെങ്കിലും ഒന്നിനോടു പ്രണയത്തിലാകേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. കാമുകിയോട്, പു���്തകങ്ങളോട്, ജോലിയോട്, പഠനത്തോട്, സംഗീതത്തോട്, ജീവിതത്തോട് എന്തെങ്കിലും ഒന്നിനെ ആഴത്തിൽ പ്രണയിക്കാതെ ഒരാൾക്കും നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന സന്തോഷം കണ്ടെത്താനെ സാധിക്കില്ലെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു "

My reason for picking this one for reading is because I have heard people speaking high about it as well as those who have said it's not that much as it is talked about. So it is that curiosity which has rided me to go for this.And I would like to say it has not been an effort gone in vain. I assure you that if you are gonna approach it like a super self help book , you are going to be disappointed for sure.It's more like a person like you talking to you ...just going on with the usual stuff of the common human mind ...and we all have met people like that in our life too...The best part I liked about it is that it gets you to see things from others shoes much clearly.

As the author says, there could be a lot of daivathinte charanmar in our lives too, who is still unnoticed or may be around us even now. Who knows for how many people, we are being one among those daivathinte charanmar. When confused or when worried or even when we are happy, this book gives an insight that we all are good and bad for some reasons. We must choose who we want to be. "To make this world a better place to live, develop an extra eye to see the unseen, an extra ear to hear the unheard, an extra heart to feel the unfelt." Mr. Annamkutty in a way, thanks the daivathinte charanmar of his life through this book. He has created a great impact on many lives (he is one among those charanmar for many of us). Rating 3 out of 5| Grade C; Simple things, Not so complex, Some enlightening, mostly mundane

The Good: The Book is filled with snippets & anecdotes from the life of the author, which he presents to the audience in forms of parables & observations. Some of his stories & viewpoints does give you new perspective on things which you'd taken for granted in life.

The Bad: Perhaps it is because of his rooted religious background, or because he was for a time enrolled in a Seminary Jose's words can at times come across as preachy, and dare I say patronizing. In some topics, such as racism, Sex education, Assault, Addictions and religion, he makes some observations which, in all honesty might've been quite enlightening in his own life.

But in Recounting them to the audience, he comes across in the same way as that one youtuber, who 'saw' colors & sunrise for the first time. Ok, maybe that was too mean. But it does come across like that at times.

The Mundane: Many of Jose's experiences as described in the book; Problems with love, Not getting good grades, Fighting with friends & parents, losing old friends to the flow of time, that's like a Monday for anyone, who has, is and will be growing up through life. Again, couldn't really get anything out of them, which I couldn't from looking back my own past & failures.

While I do acknowledge that the writer has penned these words with good intentions, I cannot honestly find anything worthwhile in this, at least anything which I wouldn't be able to find in one of the more familiar tomes on morality, from one's common sense, or even a 10 second internet search.

Which is not to say you shouldn't read it. In the book, there are several sections which involve anecdotes of how Jose, as a popular social media personality interacts with people from various walks of life, listens to their problems, and help them in his own way. If anything, that personality & the relationships which he has cultivated is something to emulate.

TlDr: Appreciate the effort, but not my cup of tea, and didn't find anything novel.

There are mainly three attractions in this book.

1) After reading the book, we will be forced to analyze the simple things that is happening/ happened in our life with much more affection, optimism and gratitude.
2) Each and every chapter begins with the quote of some famous person or similar. That is itself worth pondering over (especially when some quotes provide more insight than a book itself).
3) He introduces some books that influenced his thoughts (for our further reading).

This belongs to one of those books, which you can gift your near and dear without any fear of backlash.

I see this book more as a missed opportunity of what it could have been. The articles range from very good ones to very childish ones. Many of the articles could have been trimmed for more effectiveness. It seems author was trying hard to meet some minimum page requirement from publisher and struggling to find enough material for one book. I felt the author is struggling to find more "spies of God" in his life. The book started with a few good ones then some quite bad ones followed by a few good ones towards the end. Also I felt quite bad the way the author preferred to add the vulgarities and obscene words rather than implying them. It would have been more mature writing to do that way. If the book is aimed for young readers it would have been much better that way.

When I started reading this book, I felt I could give this book as a gift to people who find Bobby Achan's books too difficult to understand. But now after completed the reading, I don't think so.

The book is presented in a very attractive way. Maybe if you read message before each chapter, together with the quote together with the first paragraph, it might be the best part of the book. Then all these are mostly quotes from other good writers!!!!

വളരെയധികം ആകാംക്ഷയാണ് ആദ്യമായി ഈ പുസ്തകം കയ്യിൽ കിട്ടിയപ്പോൾ തോന്നിയത്. വായിക്കണം എന്ന് വളരെ കാലമായി wishlist ൽ ചേർത്ത് വെച്ചിട്ട് അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി ഇത് കയ്യിൽ കിട്ടിയപ്പോൾ പറഞ്ഞറിയിക്കാനാകാത്ത സന്തോഷമായിരുന്നു. എന്റെ കയ്യിൽ ഈ പുസ്തകം ഇരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ട് എനിക്ക് വളരെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട എന്റെ ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് ഈ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ വളരെയധികം ഈശ്വരവിശ്വാസിയാണെന്നും ഇദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്ന ചിലകാര്യങ്ങളൊക്കെ നമുക്ക് യോജിക്കാൻ ആവാത്തതാണ് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു . പിന്നെ വേറൊരു സുഹൃത്ത് ഇതിൽ എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത് പലതും തള്ള് ആണോ എന്നു തോന്നും എന്നാലും വായിക്കാൻ നല്ല രസമാണ് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ഈ രണ്ട് ഡയലോഗ് കേട്ടതോടെ ഇത് വായിക്കാനുള്ള എന്റെ interest ഒക്കെ കെട്ടടങ്ങി എന്നതാണ് സത്യം🙂. എന്നിട്ടും വായിച്ചു നോക്കിയേക്കാം എന്ന് തന്നെ ഞാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ തന്നെ ഈ പുസ്തകം വളരെ engaging ആയി തോന്നി. വളരെയധികം വേഗത്തിൽ അതിന്റെ പേജുകൾ മറിയുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇതിലെ പല ചാപ്റ്ററുകളും നമുക്ക് relate ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റുന്നതായിരുന്നു. പെട്ടന്ന് വായിച്ചു തീർക്കാൻ പറ്റുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ പുസ്തകം. ഇതിൽ പറയുന്ന എല്ലാത്തിനോടും എനിക്ക് യോജിക്കാൻ പറ്റില്ലെങ്കിലും മനസിന്‌ കുറച്ചു positivity ഒക്കെ തരാൻ ഇതിനു സാധിച്ചു. ചിലപ്പോളൊക്കെ എന്നെ ഈ പുസ്തകം ചിരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചിലപ്പോളൊക്കെ  ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു . നിങ്ങൾക്ക് യോജിക്കാനാകുന്നത് ഉൾകൊള്ളുക അല്ലാത്തത് തള്ളുക🙌🏻.

After reading this book,I ask myself, "Why God?? Why didn't you give me this book before?????" Right now, I'm upset because I didn't have the privilege to read this book before. Let me tell you, this book is WAY UNDERRATED.
After reading this book, you'll get to see both the sides of Joseph Annamkutty Jose, the RJ that we all know and love and the person that we didn't know, aka Joppan. I just wish this book had an English translation so that everyone in this world because this person deserves to be known.

Raw and honest, Joseph recalls all of the memories that made him who he is today. This book urges the readers to think beyond their normal mindset, to see things as they are than believing the modified version that everyone believes. The language is simply amazing and the writer has done a beautiful job, so as to not making it boring. This is my first time reading a memoir, and it was sooo beautiful and rich and I'll always remember it.
Every chapter is beginning with a thought provoking quote that the reader will find himself enjoying even if he doesn't want to.

Beautifully portrayed and soul stirring, this is one gem of a book!

Joseph Annamkutty Jose is a radio jokey, motivational speaker and an author who does lots of inspirational videos and talk shows. This is the second book I am reading of Joseph- the first being “Buried Thoughts”.

Daivathinde Charanmaar is a collection of incidents in the author’s life. Each chapter begins with a beautiful and meaningful quote and the chapter is then written in very simple Malayalam. These chapters reflect different phases or events in Joseph’s life- what he learned during that incident- who helped him or what inspired him during that phase and how he believes there is a hidden force behind everything that happens. His positive outlook and very motivating words in simple language is a good read. Some topics covered are: spiritualism, sex education, friendship, love, teachers, relation with his mother, his respect/love for his eldest brother etc. The author also reads lot of books and gives us a list of the books he was reading or had read when he was penning each chapter.

A good read and I hope there is an English translation of the book soon.

This book had been in my wishlist for sometime and decided to give it a try. The author was familiar through his YouTube videos and his stories being an RJ, and was expecting the same charisma from his books as well.
The book is an open account of the author, introducing some characters from his life who has influenced him in some way or the other, through the memories he share with them. An easy read, with right amount of humour and food for thought. At some instances, it also made me do a reality check on my life, having been in similar situations as well as thinking through how could I have behaved differently in some situations.
The book is narrated beautifully as it feels like the author is sitting right in front of you and explaining things in real. This would be one book that I can go back and read a few chapters when I need some peace of mind.
Personally, I was amazed by how some of his experiences were very openly told by the author, without the fear of being judged. I think that’s what everybody wishes for.

ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായിട്ടാണ് ജോസഫ് അന്നംകുട്ടി ജോസിന്റെ ഒരു പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നത്. തികച്ചും ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായ ഒരു പുസ്തകം. വളരെയധികം ആസ്വദിച്ചു വായിച്ച പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്ന്.

ഇതിൽ ജോസഫ് തുടക്കത്തിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട് :”ഏതേലും വണ്ടിയിൽ യാത്ര ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ മുൻപിലെ ടിപ്പർ ലോറിയിൽ എഴുതിവച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന വരികളെയും നടന്നുപോകുമ്പോൾ സൈഡിലെ മതിലിൽ കാണുന്ന തേഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങിയ വാക്കുകളെയും ഹോട്ടൽ റൂമിൽ ചെക്കിൻ ചെയ്യുന്ന നേരത്ത് കയ്യിൽ തടഞ്ഞ ഏതോ മാഗസിനിലെ വരികളെയും വായിക്കുന്ന ലാഘവത്തോടെ നിങ്ങൾ ഇതിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോയാൽ മതി“.

എന്നാൽ ഇത് വായിച്ചു തീർന്നപ്പോൾ ജോസഫ് പറഞ്ഞ അത്ര ലാഘവത്തോടെ ഇതിനെ തരം താഴ്ത്താൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. അത്രയ്ക്കും realistic ആയിട്ടാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ എഴുത്ത്.

ഏതൊരു വായനക്കാരനെയും പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുക, നിർത്താൻ തോന്നാത്ത രീതിയിൽ വായന തുടരുക, ആ പുസ്തകം എത്രയും പെട്ടെന്ന് വായിച്ചു തീർക്കുക എന്ന ഒരു magic factor ആണ് ഏതൊരു എഴുത്തുക്കാരന്റെയും വിജയം എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന ആളാണ് ഞാൻ. സത്യസന്ധമായിട്ട് പറയട്ടെ, ജോസഫ് അതിൽ വൻ വിജയം കാഴ്ച വെക്കുന്നുണ്ട്…

This book was in my shelf untouched for almost 2 years now. When I picked reading it, I didn’t think I could finish it in a day and half. Its simply about some incidents about the authors life and the persons who influenced him in different stages of his life.

Very simple language and easy to read. Loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapters. Surprisingly it forced me to look back into my own life and the people who came and left a foot print on my heart and a stab in my heart which always bleeds when I think about it.
Loved his honest narrative. Its indeed a good one to read!

This book is a collection of Author's memories.. Nothing about super hero life incidents,
But simple, normal life. I think through this book he is trying to convey that everyone's life, there
will be an influencer, may be more than one - and he is calling them as god's spies (Daivathinte Charanmar).

The book is divided into several chapters, some chapters will bring joy, some others will bring thoughts, and there are some chapters I felt like totally irrelevant as well..
But for sure, after completing this book, readers will reiterate some of their own life incidents, and realize their god's spies...
