Town manager Savannah Castillo has everything under control, just the way she likes it. But when she starts to receive unsolicited gifts and messages from a stranger, her life turns to chaos. Against her better judgment, Savannah accepts Deputy Chief Mackenzie Blake’s help in the investigation and is more than a little annoyed when Mackenzie suggests herself as a part-time, live-in bodyguard.
Savannah isn’t Mackenzie’s favorite person. She’s rude and entitled, and she always has to have the last word. Always. But when she and her daughter Eliana need help, protecting them becomes more than just a job. Mackenzie’s mission is to find the person harassing them before they cause real harm. Savannah’s fleeting and incredibly sexy smiles don’t make the task any easier, and there’s no time for distractions.
Not when someone waits in the shadows, watching and preparing to strike.
3.75 Stars. I thought this was a fun debut. It’s not a perfect read, it had a few issues, but it was really entertaining and exactly the kind of book I needed. For the past week I have had a house full of family company, including an eight month old baby. I love my extended family but they are loud and a bit messy so it has been a whirlwind with no quiet time for me to read. The reason I bring this up is a week without reading could be why I found this book so appealing. It was like finding a glass of water in the desert, so your mileage may vary slightly.
While this is a crime/mystery romance the crime part is not too heavy. I actually don’t think you have to be a mystery fan to enjoy this. There is just enough excitement and mystery to keep you turning the pages, but it never gets too dark or heavy. I liked that I didn’t guess who the “bad guy/girl” was. I had an idea, but I ended up being way off, so I appreciate that Stiling didn’t make it too easy to figure out.
When it came to the main characters I had fun with them. You have a really likeable and sweet Chief of Police in Micki and you have an ice queen Town Manager named Savannah. Savannah is an ice queen to say the least. I almost worried Stiling was going a little too far with her character, but it did give the characters this intense sexual love/hate chemistry in a few scenes. I did think the characters fell out of the “hate” into the “like” period a little quickly, but I think that is something that Stiling will get better at as she becomes a more seasoned author.
Overall, I thought this was a good, entertaining read. It has a few bumps, but it is a very readable and enjoyable debut. I would not hesitate to read Stiling again in the future.
Savannah is an uppity town manager and Micki is the amiable Deputy Chief. These two have not gotten along ever since Micki rolled into town. They continue to challenge each other in town meetings, budget discussions, and personal interactions until someone starts sending unwanted gifts to Savannah and Micki needs to provide protection.
I can't believe this is a debut offering from Nicole Stiling. I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end.
The main characters had a lot of tension and developed chemistry as they had to spend more time together. I really loved Savannah's little girl Eliana and her dynamic with Micki. They would gang up on Savannah together. Fun banter.
I appreciated the Savannah was bisexual but there was no preaching, explanation, or any huge amount of attention put to it. It was just as is. Refreshing.
I had fun trying to figure out who Savannah's stalker was. I thought I knew. I was wrong.
Everything about this was captivating. The only thing I had an issue with was how snotty Savannah was in the beginning. There was a lot of growth with her character but I wish she would have been a TAD bit more tame to start off.
I recommend this to people who love romance, mystery, girl cops, ice queens, small towns, and the song "You are my Sunshine."
I received an ARC from the publisher for an honest review.
Great story, very well written for a debut. (If this isn't a pen name which I'm seeing more often) but I digress.
These characters are like chalk-and-cheese, although that's not entirely true. Savannah comes across as closed off, but Micki sees right through her.
Micki, is a likable character. Savannah, you'll either love or hate, or hate to love. I'm not a fan of bitchy 0ff-handed conflict, so she rubbed me the wrong way for the better part of the story. I also found her parenting skills questionable. Sure, it was sweet that Micki went to her daughter. But I would think most parents would run to their terrified child, not send someone else. Officer of the law or not.
Speaking of questionable, I found it highly odd/unethical, not only how, but how soon, Micki ended up in Savannahs bed.
The mystery - To me it was so clear who the villain was from very early on. Or so I thought, how very wrong was? I Loved that.
My quibbles aside, which truly are minor, this was an enjoyable story. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, and I would definitely read more by Stiling.
FOOTNOTE - I've tagged this story as bisexual due to Savannah being bi, therefore, some of the suspects are male ex's. But rest assured the story is lesbian fiction.

It’s hard to imagine this is a debut novel! I enjoyed this one a lot even though it had some minor glitches! But overall i definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to be entertained! For starters, both MCs were very interesting. I loved the banter between them and at certain points it was actually funny. There was very good chemistry between them, although I found the insta love a bit too much. But because the book is so smooth, I actually didn’t mind it in the overall storyline. The mystery/stalker part was done nicely as well. Turns out my guess was wrong, so for that, an extra point goes to the author :) Supporting characters were also quite interesting especially the daughter and the Chief’s roommate.. My rating is 3.75 rounded up to 4. I really did enjoy this one. Copy provided from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a unexpected but very pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed this book. Overall, this is light read - not a hard core or bloody mystery/crime drama or an angst-ridden romance - but Stiling manages to balance the mystery and the romance quite well to make it a great book to while away (wile away) a dreary afternoon.
The mystery was plausible without going over the top - there's something just inherently creepy about stalkers and Stiling used it well to stir up the suspense. She also managed to include a decent set of suspects, alibis and red herrings to keep me guessing. Best of all, she didn't include the big bad's POV - I hate it when a book includes the bad guy/gal's POV in the narration - it ruins the flow and, honestly, it always seems cheesy to try to explain or demonstrate how batshit crazy they are.
The dynamic between Micki and Savannah worked particularly well - gotta love the ice queen melts trope - with a great chemistry and some amusing dialogue. The love/hate dynamic works well in place of the "instalove" you sometimes find in lesfic novels - the idea that the attraction was there, but masked by the sniping/one-upmanship of the MCs. Both characters were engaging and believable and the evolution of their relationship worked. Even the secondary characters seemed three dimensional.
I'm surprised this is Stiling's first novel and I will be looking for her next one.
By the way - I do agree with the stalker, asparagus is better when it's steamed.
I came across Ms.Stiling's newborn during my break from reading through friends' update. I did check it out on Bella Books' website and thinking.. 1st time author, 24O pages and 1O dollars.. Conclusion, all the best Ms.Stiling and I'll see you around on your 2nd or 3rd book. However, the NAMES that read and loved this book were among the VIPs on Goodreads. Lex, Carrie, CS, Luce, Elle and Megha.

"Can we tie you up with a jump rope so you can show us how to break out of it?” - The first-grade class at Winter Valley Elementary.
One of my most favorite trope featured in this beauty, hate - loathe - love and it was exceptionally done! Usually, I will come across these scenarios.
Scenario 1 - Too Many Times
Lead 1: I hate her so "$+*/=!? much, she's rude, obnoxious and thinks everyone worship her but I can't help myself, she's so gtdkiyvcsxr hot! There's no point in wearing panties anymore, she'll just Copperfield it.
Scenario 2 - Same Old
Lead 2: Who the heck does she think she is, how dare she to come in my office and accuses me of watching cat videos all day long! Fine, I'm not denying that she smells so wvhdsyhng good, I feel like climbing her and licking her up as if she's the last (insert your own fave flavor) popsicle in the freezer.
Those scenarios above, did not happen in Secrets In A Small Town until wayyyy later. The leads' continuously - ingeniously constructed - verbal sparring sessions were like multiple breaths of fresh air + a big bowl of black cherries to be used during your next slingshot session. Loved both of them, even though Micki sounded like an airhead at times and kudos to Ms.Stiling for not nominating Savannah as citizen of the year at all. Ms.Stiling's Science teacher would be proud of her for her well executed and highly entertaining chemistry between the leads' experiment.
The only reason why I couldn't rate it 5 was because of logic. It demanded my attention a couple of times and I ignored it until it threatened to leave me whenever I converse with Kid2 so 4 shining Evangeline Stars for Ms.Stiling's newborn.
Dear Ms.Stiling, congratulations on a job well done. I'm just a girl, standing in a queue, in front of you, asking you, to please write more and soon.
3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 stars for this debut novel by Nicole Stiling.
Savannah Castillo, a town manager, is an ice queen extraordinaire who likes to be in control of everything and everyone around her. Her one soft spot is for her 7 year old daughter, Eliana. The Deputy Chief of Police, Mackenzie (Micki) Blake regularly clashes with Savannah as her requests for her office renovation to be finished and updates to the police equipment and cars are repeatedly denied by Savannah. (Question: why isn’t Micki the “Chief of Police” instead of Deputy since there is no one above her position?)
Savanna begins to receive anonymous love letters and gifts from an admirer that quickly escalates to stalker. When the stalker starts leaving messages inside of Savanna’s house, Micki moves in to protect Savanna and Eliana. Savanna and Micki’s relationship goes from adversaries to lovers very quickly. My preference is slow burn romances but I didn’t mind this fast burn (hot) romance.
One quibble I had is I felt there are standard police procedures that Micki could have done that would have aided in identifying the stalker quicker. I had in my mind who the stalker was, but alas I was wrong. A good mystery keeps you guessing.
I was wondering if this story was originally a Once Upon a Time (OUAT) fan fiction or inspired by OUAT. OUAT was a TV show with ice queen Regina, who was a mayor of a small town with a young son and Emma was the Chief of Police. They too regularly clash and resemble Savanna and Micki. No matter. I enjoy fanfic so I’m thrilled when a fanfic author becomes a successful published author.
This is an enjoyable debut novel and I’m looking forward to Stiling’s next book.
An ARC of this book was given to me by NetGalley for an honest review.
I read this book in one sitting, it was a very nice and enjoyable read, part romance, part mystery. The mystery part was actually quite scary at times but not overwhelmingly so. The romance was an enemies to lovers one, and I liked how the characters themselves were surprised by it, how fast and how easily it happened.
I’m always amazed at the quality of some debut novels, and while this one is not perfect, it makes me look forward to the author’s next one.
I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Here is the run down of the book...Micki is Chief of Police is a small town that Savannah is TM ( is that kinda like a mayor?). They clash like the titans of old in a big way. Savannah has the personality or demeanor of the typical Ice Queen whereas Micki is pretty laid back and chill. Something stirs up the small town that effects Savannah and in comes Micki to try and save the day. The book starts off great. I really liked it and it made me smile. The initial interactions between Savannah and Micki were really great as well as you could feel the dislike/soon to be attraction between them. My problem comes from how quickly things take a 180 turn. I also felt things just seemed unfinished as I read. I'm all for instalove but this wasn't it and I felt the thawing of the Ice Queen was more like throwing an ice cube in a bonfire.
I am bit torn on how to rate this book. First of all this is a debut novel and for a debut it is well written and easy to read with likable main characters. However, the book just seemed to move to fast in the relationship between Micki and Savannah, the mystery or crime in the book dragged a bit for me, and felt like other things were just not fully hashed out to the point that it was not worth mentioning at all. That seems like a lot of bad compared to the good but really the read was nice. It's not a 3 star by any means but not a 4 star either. I guess, for her debut, I would rate this about a 3.60 star. And I look forward to reading the next book Nicole Stiling releases.
***Got an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review *** (Thank you)
This was a great little romance/mystery that I plowed through quickly. I loved the dynamic between the two leads, Micki and Savannah. Of course, I'm a sucker for the uptight, sarcastic, prickly woman who keeps everyone at arm's length until THE ONE comes into the picture.
The mystery part of the book was believable and sufficiently creepy. I waffled throughout on who the stalker was, so I think that was well done. I was on pins and needles waiting for the resolution.
I enjoyed the suspense, but I loooooooved the romance between the two woman. I was actually giddy in anticipation of the first kiss. The way it came was a surprise, but it ended up being quite satisfying. I closed the book with a happy sigh. I wish I had a Savannah of my own.

I must say, I was intrigued by Nicole Stiling's "Secrets in a Small Town" when I came across its blurb on BSB. And then the subversively crafted cover had a strange pull on my ever-inquisitive sense of curiosity. I know, another book whose cover played a role in my decision to read it apart from its blurb that obviously interested me primarily because of it sounding like it would be an ice queen trope. I'm always game for ice queen romances in lesfic because I'm forever curious to find out the many ways authors could come up with to thaw an ice queen character in a love story! Heh! What's more, there was a mystery attached to the romance involving a stalker! Crikey! Level of intrigue and curiosity increased, obvs! Anyway, about Stiling, I was curious because I never heard of her before so as usual, I had to find out more which was when I discovered that this book was actually only her first published fiction! Okay, then. So off I went to read it with a sense of anticipation as to how a first-timer would weave this mystery-romance using one of my beloved tropes.
Needless to say, I was impressed. It was a light and speedy read for me but I had a lot of fun doing it! To me, it was a great debut effort from Stiling because I really enjoyed her writing style. There's nothing more satisfying than reading constructed wordings that flow smoothly throughout a book, is there? In any case, I'll certainly be checking out Stiling's future stories to see how she manoeuvres and hones in her craft.
Secrets in a Small Town by Nicole Stiling had everything to win me over (and it did!). Reminiscent of an SQ fanfic, this book combines three of my favourite things. An ice queen, the enemies-to-lovers and the ‘forced to live together’ tropes and it’s a suspense/thriller.
Savannah Castillo manages the small town that is Winter Valley. She has everything under control until she starts getting creepy messages and gifts from a secret admirer (read stalker). Refusing to get the Chief Police, Micki Blake, involved because of their mutual dislike for one another, Savannah soon realised that she’ll need Micki’s help to ensure her six-year-old Eliana’s safety when things escalate, and the stalker starts targeting her home.
As well as being well written, this book is funny. There’s an underlying humour that I personally really enjoy, and I found myself chuckling quite a bit throughout the book. The banter between the two main characters is great and there’s definitely great chemistry between them.
I usually like my romances to be slow-burn, but Savannah and Micki realize quite early on that they are attracted to each other and they just sort of go with it without the usual ‘they get together, they break up, and they get back together drama’. It was nice.
For me, this is more of a 4.5 star read, but because I was so emotionally invested in the characters, I’m rounding it up to 5 stars. I’m really surprised that this is Stiling’s debut novel, and I will definitely check out anything else the author will publish. I definitely recommend it :)
Thank you to Bold Strokes Books and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 ⭐ It was a good read. The author did a great job for her first book.
Savannah is Town manager and Micki is deputy chief of a town named Winter valley. They don't see eye to eye. When Savannah get stalked by someone Micki become her live in bodyguard to protect Savannah and her daughter Eliana.
I kept guessing who the stalker is but I was more interested in their romance. Savannah and Micki become close very fast despite of their earlier clashings and their first kiss was really hot. I'm very glad there weren't any typical miscommunications between the leads. So it was a happy read and I recommend it.
I like fan-fiction and I generally like it just as much when it is altered and published. This has so many markers resembling ‘Once Upon a Time’ that I would be surprised if it didn’t start out as a SwanQueen fic. Winter Valley’s town manager, Savannah Castillo, loves her job but her least favourite part is dealing with Deputy Chief Mackenzie ‘Micki’ Blake. Micki revels in antagonising Savannah although she’s really fond of Savannah’s six-year-old daughter. Savannah is arrogant, cold, rigid and solitary. When she receives some disturbing notes and gifts from an unknown sender the last thing she wants to do is involve Mickie, who she considers incompetent.
The pairing of an ice-queen and a happy-go-lucky woman is a pairing I’m often drawn to and they are, for the most part, well-written in this novel. The parts that I found a little disjointed have to do with the speed and ease with which they get together with not enough engagement between the two them portrayed or alluded to.
The plotline of the stalker was a good one and kept me guessing (incorrectly) until the end. It’s a good read with a fast-paced plot.
Book received from Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.
Nicole's Stiling’s debut novel Secrets in a Small Town is a dynamic romance meets mystery that keeps you on your toes yet smiling page to page. No worries with this one, you won’t be scared to turn out the lights but you will be enchanted and thoroughly entertained.
Savannah Castillo is the town manager of a sleepy little community of fewer than 1,500 people. She picked this small town specifically because it was an ideal place to raise her daughter, Eliana. Savannah is 100% an ice queen. She lets no one, other than her little one, close to her. This control fanatic is disturbed by the sudden onslaught of mysterious gifts. They arrive at her office and home at all given times with no sender to be found. The gifts start increasing in frequency as well as becoming more and more threating. Savannah thinks she can handle this on her own until her assistant goes over her head and involves the one person Savannah wants to avoid more than anyone, the chief of police, Micki Blake.
Micki loves working in Winter Valley. She was worried when she left the hustle and bustle of the city she would be bored. Come to find out she likes the slow pace of small-town life. The only thorn in her side is that the town manager seems to loathe her for reasons she can’t quite grasp. Micki takes Savannah’s attitude in stride and throws it right back at her needling the uptight town manager whenever she gets the chance. You really can’t rule this lighthearted good-natured police chief. When Micki’s friend and Savannah’s executive assistant, Chloe, brings the gift situation to Micki’s attention, the chief is bound and determined to help her abrasive nemesis.
Nicole Stiling can write a damn good book that is for sure. My mind is still boggled a bit that this is a debut novel. It really has a good flow, the plot is dynamic and the dialogue reads very natural. From the very first page, I was drawn to the story and the main characters. As caustic as Savannah was at times I still liked her and Micki is just a main you are immediately drawn to. There were enough twists and turns in who the stalker might be that I was guessing to the end. I will definitely be reading what Nicole Stiling has to offer next. 4.25 stars
There is nothing I love more than a book with humor and sarcasm and this book has plenty of both. The dialogue between the two main characters is great, the plot is well thought out and it’s easy to fall in love with both characters. (Savanna was a little tougher but I did end up loving her as much as Micki.). I thought Savanahs parenting skills were just fine, Eliana wasn’t a main character. I loved it!
Secrets in a Small Town was a fun read. The chemistry between the two leads was off the charts, which created tension and heat throughout the book.
I was partial to Micki, the police chief. She was funny and sweet and I loved her interactions with Savannah's daughter. She's smart about things and doesn't flail around like a lot of small town cops in these types of stories.
Savannah was definitely a conundrum. She was super bitchy, but reeled it in just before you disliked her for real. And then she'd show signs of being an actual human being and I ended up liking her a lot by the time the story was finished.
I enjoyed the push and pull between Micki and Savannah. They were both stubborn and vulnerable, and I liked the way that was fleshed out. I also liked that even Micki was questioning the ethics behind some of her actions, because clearly there was some lines crossed. Would it happen like that in real life? Probably not, but you never know. I was never taken out of the story because of it. I was looking forward to their nights together as much as they were.
Overall, I thought this was a really good story and one I will probably reread in the future.
Secrets in a Small Town by Nicole Stiling is a well-written story about two women who are thrown together because of a stalker. Savannah Castillo, the town manager of Winter Valley is a perfect ice queen character. She must always be in control of everything and everyone around her. The only person she is close to is her seven year old daughter Eliana. When Savannah begins to receive anonymous gifts and messages that gradually become more ominous and threatening, she is forced to ask for help from the one person in town that she really detests. Deputy Chief Mackenzie (Micki) Blake agrees to help Savannah even though the two can barely stand being in the same room together. The two are completely different and mix like oil and water, but they must learn to put that aside and work together to find the stalker before someone is hurt or worse.
This is a very enjoyable read. The characters are well-developed and the dynamics between the two are perfectly written. The pacing of the story is good and kept me interested from the first page to the last. While the reader is given lots of clues to who the stalker might be, the author kept me guessing almost until the last, and even threw in some twists that threw me off the scent for a while. I also loved the humor the author displays throughout the tale. She had my interest from the first sentence and had me chuckling by the second page. Humor helped to keep this book from being a totally scary and nail-biting tale, and made it something you could read and enjoy without having to keep all the lights on in the house.
I really enjoyed this book. I believe this is a debut novel for Ms. Stirling, and she did an excellent job. I will be looking for more from this author.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
This was a great first book of this author and I enjoy read it.
Savannah is the Town manger and she likes everything under control she keeps everyone at arm length which make people in town believes she is a ice queen and if it wasn't for her daughter Eliana you'll think that to as your reading but it's not the case as I see it when she was younger she lost her father and her mother sort of abandon her and she grieves alone which made her put walls up around her heart.
Micki is Deputy Chief in town and she and Savannah doesn't piticularly get along because Micki seems to challenge her but when Savannah starts to recieve gifts that seem harmless at first but things start to feel threatening her assistant Chloe goes behind her back and get Micki involve much to Savannah chagrin.
As Micki and Savannah get to know each other they realize what they thought of each other is true but that didn't stop them for falling for each other flaws and all and as the danger of the stalker grow near will Micki be able to protect Savannah without her feelings cloudy her judgement.
I like the mystery of who the stalker is even though I guess who it was beforehand as the author did give us great suspects I knew two was a red herring and the one I knew was the stalker was true.
I'm looking forward to reading more from this author good first novel.
Micki and Savannah fall into the classic love/hate tug of war and I loved it. It was just long enough to keep me wanting more, instead of being mired in drawn out drama. The kid was cute but not precocious. The suspense was on point. The first time M&S got together was really, really, REALLY hot. I bookmarked it on my kindle just in case. Would recommend in a heartbeat.
This reads like a SwanQueen fanfic. I haven't found evidence that this was one before but the similarities are quite jarring.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed this novel. It was a cute and quick read that I devoured in one seating. I would have loved it though if Chloe was the stalker though! The reveal to me was less than stellar.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Great debut! This is a fast paced thriller with an enemies - to - friends style romance. When stern town manager Savannah Castillo finds out that she may have a stalker, she's reluctant to enlist Deputy Chief Mackenzie Blake's help. They're polar opposites and clash over everything except Savannah's daughter, who they both adore. When the stalker becomes more threatening, Mackenzie suggests that she becomes a temporary live-in bodyguard. Sparks end up flying as Mackenzie realizes how much she comes to enjoy Savannah's prickly smiles, and Savannah struggling to re-assert her sense of control. With the stalker circling ever closer, will the pair find out who they are?
I thoroughly enjoyed the characterizations here, especially with Savannah; you can see her need to control her environment, and how ruthless she is in making sure it happens, but not at the expense of the town she runs. It is fun to see a female politician like that, a total ice queen, but uber competent. There are a lot of layers to Savannah, like her wishing to be more spontaneous for her daughter, who has a completely different personality, but struggles with her innate introverted nature. Mackenzie is the type that leaves everything out there, except her deepest fears, which are touched on, but not until later in the book. I feel like Mackenzie is the most consistent character of our two leads, but that doesn't make her a lesser character.
The stalking case is creepy, and does lend an air of mystery, leaving you to guess which of the suspects might they be. Savannah's reactions to the stalker's escalations were spot on. And it felt realistic; many stalkers find ways to invade the spaces of their victims in order to try to control them. Pairing that with Savannah's relentless need for control and Mackenzie's insistence to just be there and help just made everything more tense. I loved it.
If there's any complaint, its that I wish it was maybe twenty or thirty pages longer, to allow the characters a little more time together and to develop. I think the author did a great job in not allowing the characters to be 'changed' or 'fixed' by finding each other. Savannah especially; she's mean and prickly, but has a huge heart that is very generous, and that doesn't need to change at all. We just get to see that side of her with her daughter and Micki.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review
Entertaining mystery. Savannah Castillo, town manager, is a person that thrives when she has control. She also has a daughter, Eliana. Mackenzie Blake, is the town's Deputy Chief of Police. Micki is friends with Eliana because her roommate and friend Rebecca picks her up and watches her after school. Savannah has an issue with Mickie because she believes she is incompetent with an incompetent staff. An inappropriate yet funny line that Eliana shares that her mother says about a member of Micki's staff, "...Jack is a hundred years old and wouldn't be able to stop a baby from drawing on a wall". Mickie pleads for more funding for the police department but Savannah is not willing to provide. As the story unfolds the interaction between the two becomes a necessity (only in a small town?). I thought the characters were well developed and provided interesting additions to the read.

What a humorous, engaging, and fun book. I really enjoyed it. I'm leery of new authors, but based on the reviews I thought I'd give it a try. So glad I did.
Savannah and Micki worked great together, both as adversaries and as romantic partners. Their banter was the hightlight of the novel for me.
I also thought the stalker part of the book was very well done. I wasn't sure who was doing it, and I was nervous right along with Savannah. I loved that she was strong in her own right and didn't feel the need to rely on anyone to protect her. That she opened herself up to it showed a different kind of strength.
I've always hated Jack-in-the-Boxes and this book did nothing to change that. :)
Mackenzie Blake is struggling as Deputy Police Chief in the small town of Winter Falls. She loves her job but is constantly met with resistance from town Mayor, Savannah Castillo, who has taken offence to Mackenzie (Mickie) for some reason.
Savannah sees Mickie as someone who doesn’t back down when Savannah thinks she should and challenges her in town meetings, much to Savannah’s chagrin.
But things are about to change. Someone is stalking Savannah. Against her wishes, Savannah’s assistant tells the Deputy Chief about the items and letters Savannah has received. As things escalate, Savannah allows Mickie to stay at her home to protect her and her young daughter until the culprit is found. Eliana, Savannah’s daughter, adores Mickie and knows her mom isn’t a big fan so is reasonably perplexed by the sudden home sharing.
It doesn’t take long for Savannah and Mickie’s mutual disdain to give way to passion, especially when Savannah feels safer with Mickie in the same room and bed.
Their relationship happens swiftly and the one comfort Savannah holds onto is; if they end, she knows Mickie’s relationship with Eliana wont change.
Mickie springs into action when she figures out who the stalker is and rushes to save Savannah.
I really enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Savannah and Mickie is believable and the conclusion is sweet.
This was a great book. I am a first time reader of this author's and I'm happy to say I'll read more of her books if she writes them. Savannah is definitely an Ice Queen. The mystery was carried throughout the book and balanced the romance well. I think based on the circumstances, their quick connection makes sense. I will always be a fan of the "fast to love" couples who then deal with the book's adversities together. This is a definite recommend. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
MacKenzie (Micki) Blake likes her job as Deputy Chief very much. When she started her career she worked in slightly larger communities but there's something about working in a small town like Winter Valley that just seems to suit her. She leads a staff of three including herself and she would love to have a extra set of hands to at least help with all the paperwork. But that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. Winter Valley Town Manager Savannah Castillo runs a tight ship and didn’t have any money in the budget to help Micki with her problem but then again even if she did she probably would find a reason to refuse the request. She loves what she does and really only seems to have room in her life for her young daughter Eliana. Getting along with others isn’t very high on her list so when she starts receiving the attention from an stalker she surely doesn’t want help, especially from Micki. Ms Stiling does a good job of setting up this story. Well paced with a nice little mystery she makes this book quite a enjoyable story. I look forward to reading more from this author. A very nice read. ARC via NetGalley
I wasn’t prepared to like this book but by the end of chapter 2 I was shocked and could not put the book down. This book centers around the main character Micki who is the chief of police in a small town. She rents a room from Rebecca, Who works at the small elementary school in town and also does childcare for Elaina, the six-year-old daughter of the town manager name Savannah. Micki and Savannah have an antagonistic relationship Micki knows Savannah thinks that she is inept and Micki views Savannah as cold and demanding needing to be in control person. Stiling does such a beautiful job developing the characters of Savannah and Micki that you realize you don’t want harm to come to either of them and there’s always the hope that Micki might be able to melt the ice queen that is Savannah. This is a wonderful read and I highly recommend this book .
