She likes action movies, dumb jokes and her best friend, Roman. After all, she was a normal person, once. But that was a long time ago. Before she was taken to the Tower. Before a man named Arthur erased her memories and ruined her life.
Impossibly, she escapes the Tower and on the way out, steals Arthur’s prized possession: a magic padlock. Too bad she won’t have time to figure out what it does. Arthur’s private army, the group of duplicate murderers collectively known as ‘The Wyatts’, are much more likely to kill her first.
But Vain isn’t ready to give up. She meets Emma, a naive grad student as powerful as Arthur himself. With both Emma and the padlock, Vain might have a way to stop Arthur permanently. Maybe even get her life back.
As Vain gathers the tools she needs, the forces of the Tower align against her. Brothers that can control minds. An Australian rodent that eats testicles. A staggeringly attractive man named Trick.
Lots to juggle. But Vain has considered all of this.
They Collapse Together is a sci-fi/fantasy novel about a group of uniquely powered humans that are trying to take down a powerful entity/person (Arthur) who lives in ‘The Tower’, a structure that seems to be a connection to Earth, alternate Earths, and perhaps other worlds.
In short, I really enjoyed this novel. It’s hard to describe how many creative ideas are sprinkled throughout the novel in a short review, but the most important ones are that special people who can either store or utilize energy are taken to The Tower where they are conditioned to work for Arthur. A few of these people have escaped and end up encountering a super-powered human, who has unlocked her abilities without ever having been to the tower. The majority of the novel focuses on them trying to avoid being captured by cruel clones (Wyatts) that seem to have endless numbers.
The story is told through the eyes of three main characters. Vain, Roman and Emma. Each of them is voiced wonderfully and have unique personalities that shine through in their chapters. Vain and Emma were my favorites, as they had a lot of humorous observations. Vain was rage driven for the most part and Emma more logical.
Over-all this novel hits a lot of great notes. The science fiction/fantasy aspect of the world is nicely paced. The action is entertaining and has an explosive finish with excellent use of the 'super powers'. I also chuckled a few times at the comedy.
They Collapse Together was a fast read for me and an easy five stars.
