Something Wild

Rate this book
The South Pacific Archipelago is home to a tiny island community of around three hundred scientists… and twenty thousand dinosaurs. As a paleogeneticist, Kit Sterling leads a team studying the dinosaurs to unlock the unanswered questions of evolution.

But there is something more dangerous than dinosaurs on the islands.

Head ranger Logan Beck discovers evidence of poachers, while rumors of a black market for dinosaur leather swirl around the community. Kit and Logan haven’t always gotten along professionally, though that has nothing to do with their attraction to each other. So when they’re thrown together to save an injured infant dinosaur, their professional disdain turns into a clandestine romance.

With not just the injured dinosaur at risk, but all of the precious dinosaurs on the islands too, Kit and Logan have to figure out how to balance their budding romance without letting their careers go extinct.

Anna Martin is from a picturesque seaside village in the south west of England. After spending most of her childhood making up stories, she studied English Literature at university before attempting to turn her hand as a professional writer.

Apart from being physically dependent on her laptop, she is enthusiastic about writing and producing local grassroots theatre (especially at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she can be found every summer), travelling, learning to play the ukulele, and Ben & Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk.

Although her most recent work is in the LGBT romance genre, in the past Anna has worked on a variety of different projects including short stories, drabbles, flash fiction, fan fiction, plays for both children and adults, and poetry. She has written novels in the Teen or Young Adult genre, Romance and Fantasy novels.

Anna is, by her own admission, almost unhealthily obsessed with books. The library she has amassed is both large and diverse; "My favourite books," she says, "are 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and 'Oryx and Crake' by Margaret Atwood." She also owns multiple copies of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park books and re-reads the Harry Potter novels with almost startling regularity.

Anna claims her entire career is due to the love, support, pre-reading and creative ass-kicking provided by her closest friend Jennifer. Jennifer refuses to accept any responsibility for anything Anna has written.

One of my favourites from Anna and just a whole lot of fun.

It's a Dreamspinner Press release so not particularly steamy, but there's a great chemistry between Logan and Kit and I loved their relationship growth.

The dinosaur elements of the book really sold it for me, although the sort of suspense/danger part was a bit of a damp squib in the end.

Still, the idea that an archipelago in the middle of the ocean could exist with a load of hidden dinosaurs on was straight into my childhood's best imagination.

I though Anna did this side of things brilliantly. And I adored Dizzy the dinosaur with her sweet and inquisitive nature.

As ever, I'd always prefer to see more emotional and sexual intimacy on page not off, but that's the nature of this publisher and fitted with the narrative.

There are questions which don't really get answered, and the keeping of secrets in a small community like the one here was highly unlikely, but I didn't care that much to be honest.

I just loved two blokes raising an abandoned dinosaur 😁

Book blurb is pretty good - I’ll just expound slightly. Dr. Beck and Dr. Stirling are known for their arguments in the scientific community on the island. However, the reader starts out knowing the two find each other attractive and that each harbors internal thoughts of mutual awkwardness and unworthiness for the other. When Logan is severely injured on the job and Kit is the highest qualified emergency personnel, this triggers an emotional shift in both men.

This was, overall, an enjoyable story that I buzzed through in a day. It is reminiscent of a popular movie, with some distinctive differences in location and situation. I enjoyed Logan and Kit as characters, but their plot line became somewhat secondary with the introduction of “Dizzy”, the injured, abandoned baby dinosaur.

I have very mixed feelings about the Dizzy the dinosaur. Contradictions abound from the moment they bring her back: I found it implausible that in a “gossipy” community they could keep a pet of this size secret, and the logistics of feeding a growing herbivore mostly salad was improbable. Add in Dr. Beck background, I would have thought rehabilitation for release would have been a priority, but…it wasn’t.

The second place I struggled was Logan as “Lone Wolf”. Safety on the island was imperative, his small staff had to go out in pairs with established call-in protocol…but this didn’t apply to him. There were other smaller instances which were notable and in the overall story arc, didn’t work for me.

Bouncing over to Kit and his roommate Leilani, who seemed to be conveniently absent an awful lot overnight thus allowing Kit and Logan to meet clandestinely (gossipy community, remember?).

When all was said and read, personally, I would have liked more emphasis on resolving the poaching, Logan and Kit’s budding relationship, and less on the infant dinosaur. Anna Martin does a lovely job creating worlds and characters, this was nearly a one-sit read for me, but there were some items that bounced me out of the story. If you’ve enjoyed Anna’s other books, you’ll probably enjoy this, but I didn’t think it was her strongest work.

DNF at 50%.

I just couldn't get into this book. The premise sounded promising enough, dinosaurs and hot researchers, sign me on! But the execution was somewhat of a letdown for me.

There wasn't much happening in the first half of the story, and that would have been okay, except the blurb promised something a little more exciting: poachers, danger and dinosaurs on the prowl! Instead all we got was a lukewarm romance between Logan and Kit, who have been eying each other for 6 years without either of them making a move. There were some cute scenes between them, but overall I just wasn't sold on their romance, which was a shame.

The plot didn't seem to be picking up either by the halfway point and I just got bored and frustrated with it. The writing was okay, but nothing really special, and I got the feeling the author couldn't decide if she wanted to write a romance novel or an original take on dinosaur genealogy and the proper way to potty train the - decidedly cute - Dizzy. (also two professionals going against all protocol and adopting a dinosaur, while simultaneously taking care not to pee on the premises so as not to disturb the environment? Confusing isn't going to cut it.)

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.25 stars

In the late 1970s, a pair of mysterious islands were discovered that were not only rich in undiscovered flora, but in miraculous and almost unbelievable fauna. Not just any fauna, either, but dinosaurs! The two islands had been kept safe and hidden by a cluster of small anomalies until satellite imagery was able to pick them out. While the animals are, indeed, dinoasaurs, there are no T-rexes or triceratops. The islands are too small to host such giant creatures and instead are home to the dangerous carnotaurus and smaller oviraptors. A small settlement was built for 300 international scientists, but the islands are still protected areas allowing no hunting and very little tourism.

I loved this story for so many reasons. The characters were very likable and appealing. I enjoyed Logan and Kit’s romance and how their friendship starts with having to work together to save Dizzy, and slowly grows into a relationship that is so much more.

The world building is fabulous. I loved how the author runs with the idea of a previously undiscovered archipelago, and populates it with dinosaurs, of both known and new species. The science felt realistic, and I liked how both Kit and Logan were very capable in their fields. I also liked how they never forget that dinosaurs are dangerous and wild animals and need to be treated as such.

As a bonus I enjoy New Zealand references in stories, so that made me happy.

I liked Kit and Logan. It’s obvious both men are attracted to each other, though both are stubborn and won’t back down about how they think situations should be approached. I thought that said a lot about their strength of characters. I loved nerdy!Kit and how his hacking skills paid off as the story progressed. I liked the balance between Logan being very capable with the physical side of his job yet also highly intelligent and educated with his degrees in vet science and animal biology. Their backgrounds give the story an added element of realism. The author has done some serious research in regard to the dinosaurs and the detailed scientific theories and it shows. The scenes with Logan in the wild and his run in with dangerous dinosaurs, and poachers, were edge-of-seat reading, and I was seriously worried for him.

I loved Kit’s mothers. Both of them totally rock, as well as being fabulous parents. It’s obvious he and his family care deeply for each other. I enjoyed their scenes with Kit and Logan and how they’re straight up about their observations about what’s really going on—“you’re foster parenting a dinosaur with him.”

Leilani is a great character, and I love the banter between her and Kit, and the way she goes out on a limb to help save Dizzy. I liked how her stories of Hawaiian mythology work in with the history of the archipelago. Dizzy is a character in her own right. She’s adorable. I appreciated that, although they’ve raised her, they try to return her to the wild where she belongs.

I guessed who the bad guy was working with the poachers, but that didn’t detract from my reading. The guy is a thoroughly nasty piece of work, and I enjoyed that part of the plot, and it progressed and concluded.

The epilogue made me happy.

I’d recommend this story to readers who enjoy a mix of romance, adventure, and geeky smarts, with fabulous world building and characters. And a cute baby dinosaur.

Some of Anna Martin’s books are my go-to rereads that include Cricket, Tattoos & Teacup, and the Another Way series to name a few, and according to my archive, it’s been almost five years since I’ve posted my last review of one of her books which is entitled Five Times My Best Friend Kiss Me. Hah! It just feels like yesterday no?. Okay, that was a long intro – but anyway, I just want to put that out first as a disclaimer that she is one of my favorite authors before you continue reading my review of this book.

The setting of the book is basically very Jurassic Park-esque, where in Dinosaurs actually exists (or survived) in a group of island within the South Pacific. A community of scientists lives in one of the tiny islands here and two of the said scientists, Kit Sterling and Logan Beck who happens to work together every now and then are our two adorable main characters. Kit works in the lab while Logan does the patrolling of the island and gathering stuff for the lab team.

The world-building here is amazing. As mentioned above, it’s very Jurassic Park, and though I’m not very into dinosaurs, I could easily imagine these creatures and the setting with the way the author described them – the colors, the sounds, the scenery – the author is really good at this.

I really do liked that Kit and Logan’s relationship was established early on in the story. We didn’t have to wait for so long for them to really come together, or just be adult about it. I liked that here. I liked the side characters too – Kit’s two moms, Kit’s bff and of course, the baby dinosaur DIzzy. Super adorable!

The pacing of the story may have suffered a bit because there’s not much to go on in the case of the poachers and their accomplice. After the discovery of who the ‘traitor’ was, the whole thing felt like an afterthought and it becomes a a fairy tale ending. Don’t get me wrong, I loved me a happily ever after ending but I just want some oomph in the story – I want more tension. Overall, it’s an easy and enjoyable read.

Re-read cause Jurassic World Rebirth and Jonathan Bailey wearing slutty glasses made me in the mood for books with dinosaurs.
This is the only (non shifter) gay romance with this theme that I've found, and the first time I LOVED it. On my re-read I'm glad to report that I felt the same.
I enjoyed the fact that the protagonists were friends but with just a tiny bit of hostility because of the way they both interact with the dinosaurs in their respective jobs (one is a ranger on the island, the other a scientist). It made for an interesting dynamic. It was even more fun when the baby dinosaur they "adopted" entered the equation.
However, I just wish the story had been a bit more action packed. There are some scenes where the protagonists had to deal with some carnivorous dinosaurs, and the author did an excellent job with them. I want a little more. Especially at the end.
We have a perfect resolution for the love story, but not for the storyline dealing with the management of the island and the pouchers. It was very anticlimactic. The authorities in this book were a bit too efficient lmao
Other than that, a great, great read! I wouldn't mind going back into this world. It has a lot of potential for further stories.

Yet again, another I wouldn’t mind seeing a bit more from. Imagine a world where dinosaurs are still alive. Just secluded to a very private set of islands, where researchers, rangers and scientists are doing all the can to study, protect and ensure the lives of these dinos. But, as so often happens, greed comes into play and the dino nation is now at risk with poachers. And it’s up to two very important MCs to dig and discover and tell the truth to what is going on.
Logan roaming these islands to protect, tag and ensure these dinos survive, is all in a day’s work for him. But sometimes it’s a very dangerous job. As he’s been caught in a few compromising situations where his death could become a sure thing. With one incident, he was lucky to be alive at all. But he does what he’s supposed to to protect these babies, and bring samples back to the labs to help understand what is out there and to help better protect them. And his bringing things to the lab is kind of a hot button issue with him. Because a certain hot doctor works there and pushes Logan’s buttons in ways he never thought possible. What he doesn’t know is he pushes Kit’s buttons just as bad. Which often lead to very heated and loud debates in the labs. But this time, Logan feels tongue tied and wants to ask Kit out but can’t manage the words. But somehow they start to talk and date, so to speak, and get to know each other. To the point, Kit is beyond pissed when he sees how bad Logan had gotten hurt from a job. He was also there with Logan when they rescued a dino baby that wouldn’t have survived. Even though it’s against the rules. But things are heating up as they find out there are poachers getting onto the islands and using the hides of dinos for clothing and such. And when they find out who is behind it, the betrayal is all that much worse. Especially when said person has already tried to manipulate them both into doing something they don’t want to by using the baby dino as leverage. And when the baby is kidnapped, it’s even worse. And it’s time to bring all this to a stop. They just hope they can do it in time, before more dinos or people are killed.
I love the connection with Kit and Logan. It actually made this book so much better. The sci-fi part was fun as hell. Thinking about what it would be like if dinos were still alive. But with Kit and Logan’s relationship and the work they do, the way they spark off each other, it just made it a fun book I would like to see more of. Maybe a little novella down the road to see how everything has progressed. It’s a good book. It has its slow moments where you get into the more scientific aspects of it, but there is some good action. There is shadiness from assholes who are greedy and so much more. It’s been a fun read. And what really cracks me up is how much of a mama bear the big burly Logan is to this little dino. It’s so funny and Kit has no problem picking on him about it either. What I also loved was how far Logan and Kit were going to protect these creatures. Especially Logan. Even though dinos no longer exist, we have a whole world of animals who do need protecting from greedy assholes.
Anyway, it’s a fun book. I really enjoyed it and the characters. A lot of good laughs and interesting moments. Moments of biting your nails as well. Kind of like a Jurassic Park thing. More or less. Give it a try and see what you think.

First off, if you’re a science type like me, you need to step out of that headspace and embrace the suspension of disbelief—not just because this story has dinosaurs in modern day, but also to make Kit and Logan’s actions easier to accept. Remember y’all, this is fiction and entertainment ;-) With that out of the way, I did really like the romance between the two of them, especially since things between them weren’t rushed.

My educational background is in biology, which made it very easy for me to identify with Kit. The setup between him and Logan was very similar to your classic nerd/jock pairing…without all the tediousness of school and school cliques going on. Though they might have different approaches, what was very clear was they both cared about the dinosaurs, and about keeping the animals safe and in their natural surroundings.

The injured dinosaur, Dizzy, definitely steals the show multiple times during the story. You know, in the way where you wind up wanting one of your own. Maybe two. Okay, you’re own little herd.

The baddies of the story made things tense for a bit, but I did feel that the conflict was wrapped up too neatly at the end without enough information for it to feel satisfying. So while yes, I was happy with how things ended up for Kit, Logan, and of course Dizzy, I still felt that emptiness of not getting the whole story.

Overall though, Something Wild just grazes the 4 star mark for me and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes M/M romance with sci-fi roots. This story is for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

I read this for KCLS book club, our assignment was to read a 'science fiction romance' and this book was on a bunch of lists. It was ok. An enemies-to-lovers trope that takes place in an alternate history where in the 1970's islands with dinosaurs were discovered and a group of researchers study and monitor the islands and animals. It takes place later (90's maybe) and the author does a good job setting the situation up like its a protected animal preserve.

But the characters do all kinds of dumb stuff. Logan, the head park ranger, goes out by himself all the time, despite requiring everyone else to travel in pairs for safety. Guess what? He gets attacked. When he finally gets Kit, the head lab scientist to go visit the islands with the dinosaurs they immediately take a struggling baby dino home with them, even though it is 100% against all their rules. Then they try to keep it a secret, guess what? Its not a secret. Meanwhile there is a whole plot about poachers they are trying to solve.

The main characters felt flat to me. About half way through I was kinda 'meh' about it but wanted to finish. I did like the idea of this setting/world building, but it could have taken place in Africa or any place with a protected animal preserve, maybe that was intentional by the author.

I liked this, it was different! It’s not often we get to read about dinosaurs, and I was a little uncertain at first, but I did enjoy the way they were explained as still existing.

I liked that both Kit and Logan have a say, in the third person POV. I liked that the danger to the dinosaurs wasn’t immediately obvious or clear.

I liked that both guys danced around the other for a long time! I liked that it is, on the whole, far less explicit than my usual fair.

I LIKED the book, I just didn’t love it, is all.

It’s not a difficult read, danger to dinosaurs aside, and it is well written, and I did read most of it in one sitting.

It’s a *NICE* book, and if you follow my reviews, you will know how much I dislike using that word to describe a book but it’s the only one I can find for this… 3 good, solid stars.

The premise of this book is very different, which interested me from the blurb. A paleontologist and park ranger come together to investigate poaching on the island. They don't get along, but in order to find and save the dinosaurs, they will work together. And when they find an injured baby dinosaur, they stop bickering. While I enjoyed the fantastical world where dinosaurs exists and they are trying to protect the species, I found I missed out on the true relationship development between Kit and Logan as they dealt with everything else. It was a great start to a wonderful story, but the lack of a real connection between Kit and Logan left me wanting more. All in all, a good read with a lovely premise, but I needed more of a connection between Kit and Logan.

Darum geht’s:

3.5. Premise was hotter than the execution. I enjoyed it, it was a fun read. I liked the dinosaur parts and the science parts. But when you have 2 doctors who aren't getting along because they secretly have crushes on each other, I want to see more conflict and hotter sparks. This was sweet and I liked it. But it should have been more emotionally gripping--tease us a bit more before they get together.

4.25 Stars!

I wasn't too sure I was going to like Something Wild at first. It wasn't that it is sci-fi, because I enjoy the genre and was aware that I needed to suspend disbelief in some instances, it was mostly that up until we met Dizzy, who was the most adorable pet dinosaur ever, I found it difficult to connect with either Logan or Kit. Once I did, it was smooth sailing and I devoured this book.

The story was fast-paced, action-packed and Logan and Kit definitely had chemistry and some hot interactions. For me, the star of the story was Dizzy, but the storyline was engaging and I was invested in Logan and Kit getting their HEA. Definitely a book that I have no trouble recommending.

There was a lot I liked about this story. The world building was fantastic. I also really liked the two main characters, Kit and Logan. Even though they have known each other for years, they are pretty awkward around each other due to secret crushes. They end up rescuing and rehabbing a baby dino that they name Dizzy. She is a wonderful secondary character, even though she is a dinosaur. She plays an important part in the story. Where the story fell flat, was the whole issue with poachers. The resolution to that problem was a bit lackluster. The ending also felt a bit rushed. This was a fun read for dinosaur and romance lovers!

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review

From that review:I enjoy the writings of Anna Martin and looked forward to something a little different from her latest release, Something Wild.  It has just a smattering of Jurrassic Park about it, however, in this case, there is no genetic tampering but islands that had been discovered with dinosaurs living on them all long somewhere in the Pacific ocean.  Yes, a bit of a stretch but go with it.

A quick moving science fiction romance, it has elements of some action adventure (of course, there's dinosaurs involved) and espionage, to go along with the romance.  For me the romance is one that you could call "instalove" given that the men themselves go from frenemies (loudly arguing over science papers etc) to lovers in a blink of an eye.  But the characters themselves are so engaging that the jump into bed and a full blown relationship that could get them fired gets an eye roll and then accepted."
