I’m going through shelves of home school books to toss. This book came out in 1997 - it was a hoot to go back and read it. To think how much has changed in that short amount of time! The entire book was obsolete - no mention of Google or Windows.
The Usborne computer guide talks about definitions to things such as HTML, HTTP, IP, FTP, and Email. (HyperText Mark-Up Language, HyperText Transfer Protocol, Internet Protocol, File Transfer Protocol, and Electronic Mail). Several pages explained Netscape and Netscape Navigator.
They say that in the future we will not have dial up modems and that we will have Web TV so that we can watch TV shows on our computers. Also in the future, we will have high-speed cable modems and satellite links. I remember scanning this book when we first got it and thinking, “Wow, there is a lot to learn here.”
Reading through it made me realize that back then, people were mesmerized with computers, but didn’t really know what to do with them. They weren’t integrated into our everyday lives yet, so the feeling was more like, “What can you do on the internet? There are museums, and libraries, and 3-D pictures, and virtual worlds, and chat rooms!”
The web sites were in their infancy and buying something online involved this new concept of putting your item in a virtual cart and adding your credit card information in the blanks.
