Four years ago, seventeen-year-old spelunker Carter was killed in a cave collapse. The coroner deemed it an accident.
Sullivan Gray knows better.
A camping weekend with his brother Dez takes an unsettling turn when Sully sees Carter’s shattered spirit, a sighting that reveals the teen’s death was, in fact, murder.
The brothers launch an investigation—a job complicated by a marital infidelity case Dez has been handed and the fact Sully remains little more than a ghost himself.
Having once escaped his own death inside a collapsed cavern, Sully knows the dangers lying beneath the earth’s surface. And those dangers only increase when it turns out those at the heart of the mystery—including Carter himself—will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.
The Sullivan Gray Series is mystery and suspense with a paranormal twist and the brother dynamic of shows like Supernatural.
Raised on a farm on the Canadian Prairies, words quickly became my means of exploring the world around me and giving life to the one created in my imagination. Fascinated by ghost stories and crime fiction, I have been writing both for well over two decades, drawing on more than fifteen years in a career in a criminal justice setting. When not putting Scrivener through its paces, I enjoy reading, portrait drawing, travel and spending time with family and friends.
I really do enjoy this series of supernatural murder mystery books. Brothers Sully and Dez have reunited after Sully faked his death (he did so to protect his family). After two years apart, lots of things have changed. Dez is working as a private investigator and he and his wife are separated. Sully is trying to lay low since he’s still a suspect in a murder (book #2). In order to get back to their strong bond, the brothers go camping, which leads to the discovery of Carter. Carter was a teenager who died in a spelunking accident. If Sully can see him, then it definitely wasn’t an accident. Who killed Carter and how will the murderer react when the brothers start poking their noses where they don’t belong?
Sully has grown quite a bit over the last four books. He has started to realize that his gift is a blessing and not a curse. He can use his second sight to help people - people who really need peace and justice so they can move on from this world. He’s trying to break out of the role of little brother because he knows so many dangerous things that could hurt his loved ones. He wants to protect his brother and the rest of his family, but it’s a lot to hold onto without sharing with Dez. Their bond is so fantastic! There are funny and heartwarming moments between the two of them. However, there are some more serious moments as well that show the pain of the past two years. Dez is hurt about the previous events and he’s angry about the losses he’s had to suffer. The brothers will have to work through quite a bit to repair their relationship and they will probably go on in the next book.
The mystery was interesting. There were some nice turns in this one. Like the other books, I wasn’t super surprised about the killer but I did enjoy the ride as I followed the clues with Sully and Dez. The secondary characters are nicely developed with the conflict and mystery in mind. Bayne does such a good job with her description that really sets the tone of every scene. Her dialogue feels natural, helps to move the plot along nicely, and develops the characters and conflict all at the same time. The resolution of the mystery is a good one and it still lines up more for book #5. I am excited to see where the cliffhanger elements lead us next!
Another fast paced ride with Sully & Dez. I love the combination of mystery and paranormal in this series. Every book has gotten better and you are imbedded with the characters. Diving into next book. This author has given me a much needed distraction from what’s happening in the world.
I've already read this story in ebook format and I loved it. So when the audiobook came out, I couldn't resist, particularly because I find John Downey's narration superb. And it's a wonderful excuse to revisit the story :P
And the second time was as good as the first one. You know a story is great when even when you know what's coming you are still sitting at the edge of your chair with your heart racing a mile by the minute. Oh, that part in the cave! After reading it, I will never, ever, set foot in a cave. Never!
The mystery is, as always, fantastic. We follow Sully and Dez while they try to understand what happened to Carter four years ago. At the same time, Dez is investigating a case for Lachlan and, strangely, both of them seem to be linked.
And when the end arrives, believe me, the answer is totally unexpected and yet, completely logical. My favourite kind of mystery :P
And then, we have Sully and Dez relationship. They are still each other's rock, but it's undeniable that Sully's 'death' has provoked quite a bit of damage. Dez is trying really hard to get over his anger but is not an easy task. And Sully still has to be completely honest with him about all the 'whys' of it. He's rightfully afraid of Dez' reaction to the news of Lowell Braddock being the one responsible for the death of both, his little brother and his father. And Dez is still sitting on his own secret regarding Sully's father, so things will probably get a lot worse before they get better.
Eva is here, too, and I still love her strength, her common sense, her loyalty and her capacity for love. Emily has her moment, too. And her chat with Dez is a perfect example of how wise and compassionate she is.
Forbes is back to, an unwilling ally who proves to be trustworthy when the push comes to shove *laughs*
So, yes, this is still a great story in a great series, and if you still haven't tried it, you should go and get Black Candle, the first book in this series, and get ready for a breathtaking ride.
Okay, I love this series! I keep thinking it can't get better, and then, the next book comes and I'm proved wrong... again! :P
So, first, even if this book has a full mystery and can be read without cliffhangers, there is a major arc that goes through the whole series, so you'll be missing a lot if you don't read the books in order. And you'll get a lot more about the characters this way.
The mystery in this book is really different, mainly because for once, the ghost is not pestering Sully but hiding from him. But Sully knows that the only way the ghost will find peace is if he finds how he really died so he can't let it go. And believe me, when the end comes, I was taken completely by surprise by who was the culprit; I didn't saw that coming!
There is a lot going on in the family/friends front, too. Dez is, as always, the rock in which Sully holds when everything becomes too much. Eva is still the strong, reliable woman that both, Sully and Dez can trust without reserves. And Emily! OMG! I love Emily!
Forbes is back in this book as their unwilling ally, and while he's closing the case discovers that Lowell Braddock has something to hide. YES! Oh, I want uncle Lowell going down so badly!
In short: this is a great book, with a faultless plot, characters that feel alive, and superbly written. A heartily recommended read.
So, this book pretty much carries on from the last one (and if you haven’t read the previous ones what are waiting for? Go on!)
Sully is seeing a ghost again, and this time he’s hiding. The ghost is Carter Deveraux, a young spelunker (that’s a potholer to us Brits!) who died in a similar way Sully ‘apparently’ did. Sully’s still in hiding by the way, though more and more people get to find out in this book.
Obviously as Sully is seeing him, Carter didn’t die by accident, and the brothers set out to find out what happened, hampered by the case Dez is on with his new job. As the story goes on we find the two may well be linked.
I am loving these books, saddened by the fact I am near to the end. I love Sully, Dez, Pax the dog, his constant babysitter Emily (we find out more about her past too) and can’t wait for Lowell to get what’s coming to him so Sully can stop hiding (although he is yet to find out who is his biological Father!!!) *jumps up “I know”
Read this series, start with the first one then you’ll get the undercurrent stories. If not read them out of sync, then go back to the first one, because you will – you’ll be hooked.
I am loving the Sullivan Gray series. This poor guy has been through more than a guy should but he keeps on persevering through it all because he has his brother Dez looking out for him. I enjoy reading how Sullivan and Dez work together to solve all these murders. I can’t wait until Sully can finally come out of hiding. When will all that he knows be revealed? How will he feel when Dez finally tells him who his father is? I can’t wait until the answers to these questions are revealed. I can’t wait until the uncle gets what’s coming to him as well. Great author! Keep them coming! Loving this series!
I wasn’t entirely sold after the first book, but as I had hoped, the author has done a good job of developing more three dimensional characters. So happy she kind of brought back one of the best characters from the first book that she seemed to drop. I still hope she does more with that character. I like that the author has allowed Sully’s powers to progress and that she has brought in some other supernatural elements, but yet is able to still keep the books grounded with the twists and turns of a well written murder mystery. I’m looking forward to the next book.
This is the fourth book in the Sullivan Gray series
What a ride the pieces are starting to come together I always thought the Lowell killed Aiden for a reason so it must have been a inaction for whatever secret organization Lowell belongs to . Aiden must of been Lowells sacrifice he probably had to sacrifice a loved one that's why he cried the way he did . Anyway can't wait for the next book in this series but man we didn't get to see his reunion with his Mom it left off with a cliffhanger .
These books are very intriguing and very well written. Sullivan is trying to help a ghost who was murdered in the caves he nearly died in, while his brother is working a case for a posh judge, then the two cases combine and turn out to be very linked. It's a good story and it works well. But Lowell is still a problem and then there is a potential clue offered at the end of the story while Aidan and Flynn, Dex's brother and father whom Lowell murdered are still looking for a resolution to their own story. Sullivan is getting stronger and more able to cope now however.
Crawl is Book 4 in The Sullivan Gray series. The world building and character development get better with each book. I found this to be a page-turner which I could not put down. The intensity and suspense keep you on the edge of your seat. I love this book and series and highly recommend it. I know you will not regret getting this book and series. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
This was an excellent murder mystery with the paranormal playing a large part. I’ve read this series in order, so I know the backstory. That backstory was barely touched on in this book, while bringing Carter’s murder into the spotlight. That was very clever of the author, because now I’m restlessly impatient to have Sully’s bad guys brought to justice. I am so enjoying this series, and have recommended it to others.
I like this series of the brothers so far. Crawl added more twists to the tale, and builds to the take down of Lowell. I dig the Marcus character in this series. He serves as an understanding and grounding friend to Sully, with a quirkiness to lend humor. I am enjoying the road so far...on to the next.
This was the best of them so far. Story was incredible, and definitely not predictable. Sully and Des investigate the death of a teenager who was crushed to death in cave collapse. Most considered it an accident, but when Sully sees his ghost, you know it's more than that. Sully only sees the ghosts of people who were murdered.
♾️/⭐️ I cannot put this series down, every book Heather manages to immediately transport you back into the world of Dez and Sully. Even if you only meet the side characters once she manages to create such a strong personality for them that you immediately feel like you know them. The links to previous books/ characters is so cleverly done, absolutely faultless plots. Highly recommend!
The best yet! A thrilling series of a man who can see ghosts, but only those who were murdered. He can not hear them though as he trays to help them along their way. The Brothers are together now and working on a case that should be easy, but isn't.
I must say I am HOOKED on these books. I have not been able to put them down. Sully and Dez make a great team. I can't wait to see what happens with you know who. Thank you for keeping me on the edge.
Just when you think that this author can't get any better here comes another awesome book. Here comes another more thrilling goosebumps and spine-tingling action packed book. You are on a rollercoaster of emotion. There are twists and turns with unpredictable storyline.
I love reading the Sullivan series as you feel the emotion of each character. It has drama, laughter, love and villains. When you think you guessed the who is the culprit it takes another turn.. a must read, Loved it, loved it
No spoilers but suffice to say that I loved this book as much as the others so far. Sully and Des seem to be able to get themselves into immeasurable amounts of trouble whilst still helping others and helping each other. Loved the books so far! Can recommend.
This is a must read. The entire series is captivating. A man who sees the dead but only if they’ve been murdered. With help from his ex-cop brother, they work to solve the cases so the spirit can pass. Hauntingly good!
Another great tale from H. P. Haynes to hold us in suspense.
Constant danger from beginning till end. Dez and Sully are stuck with a dingy surveillance case while on the hunt for killers and surviving attempts on their lives. Sully is still in hiding.
I’m enjoying this series. A cave collapse and a ghost are at the center of this book. Dez is a PI and working a case of missing rings while Sully is trying to help the ghost. Fast paced and action packed, this book was hard to put down.
I love the characters in this series. Once you start reading these wonderfully entertaining books, you can’t stop. Interesting, exciting twist & turns you don’t see coming. I highly recommend these books. Crawl was especially a good read. Thank you
Thoroughly intense, nail-biting, and thrilling! Kept me on the edge of my seat with the suspense! I really love this series and I can’t wait to read more!
I enjoyed the book. It was a different a way for the story to go. I never saw the story line coming. The ending was not what I expected but it was great.
It's been so long where I have plowed through a series eager to read the next, yet hesitant because I don't want it to end. Highly recommend this writer!
It’s interesting to figure out how the titles are tied to the stories. It’s not an easy giveaway. This book was not as fast paced as the others, but still good.
