The Willing Captive: An Interracial, Mob Romance

Rate this book
PROLOGUE Blood doesn’t betray blood ... or it shouldn’t. Those are the rules. But life doesn’t always play by the rules, especially when you’re a mob boss. *** Charlie Tears and survival didn’t mix. I’d learned that the hard way when I got kicked out of my mother’s house at sixteen. *** "There’s something you’re not telling me Dante. Why did your brother want to know what I’d overheard? What is he so eager to hide that he’d kill to do it? Specifically that he’d kill me to keep it quiet.” “Nothing that concerns you.” “The hell it doesn’t! I’ve been beaten, choked and threatened with death. If my life is on the line for it, I should at least know what 'it' is. Level with me. Otherwise, I’ll take my chances on saving my own neck.” “You’ll do no such thing. And if you think you have any say in this matter Charlie, you are sadly mistaken. You’ll do what I say, when I say, and how I say. Is that clear?" The only man I ever hated more than Dante Grimaldi at that moment was the one who’d tried to rape me at sixteen, and turned my mother against me in the process. *** Dante The life – the mob life – it costs you in ways you couldn’t even measure. I could forget about it for a few hours, if I forced myself to. Until something happens. *** I stared down at the young woman collapsed in my arms, her head lolling heavily against my shoulder. Her hair was all over the place and her dress was askew, revealing way too much of her long legs and the soft skin of her shoulders. If anyone saw us in this position, they’d naturally assume the worst. Little would they know the reality was actually far more horrifying. *** “My brother's not a fucking ghost. Find him Matteo, or I’ll find someone who can,” I directed, hanging up the phone. I knew damned well that if my go-to henchmen, Matteo and Leonardo, couldn’t find my brother Stefan, chances were slim to none that anybody else could. And short of putting an actual bounty on his head, there was little I could do but wait – and hope the Colombians didn't find him before I did. And waiting it out with Charlie underfoot was becoming the more dangerous option. *** One woman. Two brothers. Hard choices. And even harder consequences. Somewhere in the mix, I had to make a choice in order to realize my forever.

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time

While working overtime at Grimaldi Tech, Charlotte Everhart witnesses Dante Grimaldi and his brother fighting. What she witnesses, causes her boss Dante to put her under his protection from his brother, Stephan who wants to take over Dante's company. Dante is upfront with Charley because Stephan assaulted Charlie but she never expected to fall for her handsome and protective boss... then too neither did Dante expect to fall hard for his smart and sassy employee!

I really loved Dante and Charlotte (Charlie's) challenging journey and now I'm hoping Stephan Grimaldi gets a story too!

Good book more like 3.5

The story was catchy and well written. I would have like to have a physical description of Charlie from the beginning to really visualize her. It got quite frustrating at times. The whole book was written in a vacuum (no real interactions with the outside world) so it felt a bit dry at times too. I would have also like to know a bit more about Charlie’s background, her roots, what made her tick in the same way we had that for Dante. She was only 25 so at times she was a bit childish. For instance, who hear noises like A fight and goes to investigate instead of calling security? Her obsession with wanting to go home instead of grasping the danger she was in. She eventually realized the opportunity that this could be and started to study instead of focusing on going back to a “normal “ life whatever that is. The ending went by too quickly. It would have been nice to have more details on how he got Stefan out of his mess, actually read about the process. I would have like to read more about their reconciliation process too (like Stefan telling him at last about the abuse). What happened to the organization? Did he get them fully legit? Did he run for office? Lastly I get wanting to be her own boss but it’s really short sighted. She would do better with starting her internet security specialty within his company and eventually becoming a full partner. It is after all a family business.
