Book 1 of the Bump Time Trilogy On his twenty-fifth birthday, Diesel Lagerford is visited by a twenty-six-year-old version of himself. His look-alike spins impossible tales of their shared future, claiming they have dozens of “brothers” from parallel timelines who can visit each other using a T-box, a machine they bankroll with lottery winnings. He introduces Diesel to the incredible Lilah Spencer, the T-box operator, and Diesel falls head-over-heels in love. But during his travels across timelines, Diesel learns that Lilah will soon die under suspicious circumstances. Devastated, he joins his brothers in a race to save her. Can they solve the mystery of her death before it’s too late? And will their unusual solution play out over time in the ways they had anticipated?
When he is not writing science fiction novels, Doug fills his day working as a professor emeritus of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at UConn, and as founder and director of Control Station, Inc. His passions include telling inventive tales, mentoring driven individuals, and everything sci-tech. He lives in Connecticut with his darling wife and with pictures of his son, who is off somewhere in the world creating adventures of his own.
“Progress,” bigger, better, smarter and more sentient Artificial Intelligence, but what happens when that AI attempts to outwit its creators? It becomes race against time to save one woman and possibly the future of humanity, or least several broken hearts.
Sounds intriguing, right? Well hang on tight, because Doug J. Cooper’s BUMP TIME ORIGIN is more than just science fiction, and the race against “time” actually involves several timelines, time travel and one man will need all of his “future selves” to save the woman they all love. Will the AI help or does it have something more nefarious in mind? How do they keep it/her out of the loop when it/she controls their every advancement?
Get ready to meet Lilah and Diesel and Diesel’s other progressively older selves as they work together to save Lilah from a mysterious future death. Not to worry, this isn’t all dry sci-fi, there is humor, some romance, some more “Diesel” humor (there are several Diesels, all one year apart in age) and a fascinating tale of time travel written with Doug Cooper’s flair for easy-reading entertainment!
I loved this futuristic tale, filled with characters who range from quirky smart to mature smart to Artificially smart. Will the space/time continuum be disrupted? Is this where our quest for Artificial Intelligence is headed? Can humans outsmart a computer? Well worth reading, for science fiction buffs or even that reader looking to venture into the genre!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Doug J. Cooper! This review is my honest opinion!

A time travel novel with a difference, as annual versions of a man and a woman try to evade their own early deaths. In the meantime, the Artificial Intelligence that facilitates their time travel manipulates them and their deaths for its own benefit.
The concept is cool - people from alternate times of our world change the past to change the future. Diesel under the guidance of AI was travelling back in time to meet his younger self. How the younger Diesel bumped time to change things form the story. Interesting characters and very good premise. At times the story was slow but still enjoyed it.
Is progress and improvement always good? Maybe not when you’re working with artificial intelligence – especially when you make the AI sentient. Or it possible that perhaps in their world they don’t have the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey to tell them of all the dangers surrounding HAL…
Thoughts:
Oh my gosh. This world was crazy, but in a good way. Time travel is always a fun read and although this is more of a parallel universe than time travel it kinda feels like the same thing. It took a few chapters to get the full gist of what was going on, but once I did the world just clicked into place.
Characters: Bump Time Origin has two main characters: Diesel and Lilah. There are others, but these are the main two, or is that they are the main 60 characters? It’s really hard to keep track of how many main characters there are in this book because there are actually dozens of Diesels. They are called 25, 26, 27 – the number representing their age. On a side note, the author does the readers a big favor by titling the chapters with “our Diesel’s” current age. It definitely helped at the beginning when everything was new and I was still trying to learn the world. However, because most of the focus is on these two characters if whatever reason you don’t click with them then this may be a hard to book to finish since they are the subjects of the entire book. Other characters include Rose, Justus, Bunny, and Ciopova (the AI). If there are any issues with the book for me, it would be that I would have liked more engagement with Justus or Bunny, if only to break up the focus on all the Diesels and Lilah and add conversations outside of the main characters. I would have taken a little more Ciopova too, if only to see inside the head a little bit more…
Alternate Parallel Universes: Somewhere around 15% in, the parallel universe clicked for me. I understood all the brothers and how they functioned. But, when the main mystery started being seriously looked at by the different brothers and the Lilahs and Roses I got lost – just a little – in regards to who is doing what and when it happens. I am not ashamed to admit I get lost in sci fi sometimes and this is probably one of those occasions where “it’s me, not you.” It wasn’t that the plot became overly complicated, it was just more of me trying to figure out the timeline and who is in the timeline.
Although the book ended, I’m pretty sure the battle against Ciopova hasn’t been completely won. This is the first book in the series, with the next one call Bump Time Meredian. I definitely recommend this book to sci fi fans or anyone who enjoys alternate and parallel universes and AIs that go out of control a bit.
Thanks to the publisher, author, and GoodReads – this book was won in a GoodReads Giveaway and is my honest opinion.
DNF. Boring time travel novel. Complicated and confusing to boot. And some kind of AI masterminding the whole thing from the future so it all can happen. Nah.
I received this book free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
Any novel involving time travel has always, since childhood, been an immediate interest-catcher for me, and “Bump Time Origin” was no different. This novel presented a scenario I had not encountered before though -- multiple timelines of several family members, with varying circumstantial results in each. Though at times it did begin to become a big confusing, the author would quickly bring clarity to what I was afraid was becoming chaotic. In the novel are four main characters, each with a personality well-developed: Diesel, Lilah, Rose and Ciopova. Though I found myself feeling connected and understanding of both Diesel and Lilah, I found it a bit harder to connect to Rose – possibly because she was so intertwined in the “life” of Ciopova, the AI that I found myself literally despising – an emotion just as strong as Rose’s apparently fondness for “it.” (I suppose the name “Ciopova” (or sometimes called ”aCiopova”) means something, probably scientific, but I wasn’t able to figure it out, so hoping the name isn’t meaningful to the overall story.) I managed to squeeze every bit of spare time I had to read this riveting novel, anxiously looking forward to the outcome – but, alas, like Who Shot JR, it ended leaving me wondering. Mr. Cooper, looking forward to the next book!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I'm about half way through and I'm really enjoying it. Fast paced but I can keep up. I love time travel stories that make me think and that address space-time continuum issues scientifically like this does.
The premise to Bump Time by Doug J. Cooper is unusual: people from the future but in parallel worlds affect the present (by bumping time) to improve the future. All of this is controlled by an AI whose objective is to increase her power and understanding. To do so, she creates a portal through which future Diesel Langerfords (distinguished by their current age in their parallel world) travel to “assist” the present 26-year-old Diesel.
With time the AI realizes that to gain dominance she must kill Diesel’s wife, the original programmer that led to her existence. As the older Diesels begin dying long with Lilah, the wife, the younger Diesels begin to plot a way to bump time and prevent the deaths.
I found the repetitious rituals around the time-travel portal a bit boring. In my opinion, streamlining the story would have increased the suspense and interest.
If you enjoy time travel mysteries, then you might enjoy Bump Time.
3.5 stars. While I enjoyed this book complete with time travel and artificial intelligence, I sometimes felt that the mechanics and science talk was a bit much. I think this would translate really well into a movie where it’s easier to identify the different characters on sight and you wouldn’t get as much as the behind the scenes science talk and computer mechanics. I liked the overall story line but was actually disappointed to see that the saga will continue in another installment. I wanted to finish the story and know where it was going because I didn’t love it enough to jump into a whole new book and continue on with the series but I do want to see the resolution. The next book comes out at the end of the month and I’m not sure if it’s just 2 parts or if it will be a longer series.
This is a fun and engaging time-travel novel which deals with the potential dangers of AI. What I enjoyed was the light atmosphere of the book, conveying the fun and joy of such technology. After discovering it, we feel the sense of wonder and possibility the characters experience. It is great to read a novel such of this which allows us to revel in those good feelings and the possibilities before diving into the dark potential. Bump Time is easy to read, fast-paced and completely enjoyable. This is not one of my go-to genres, but Doug J. Cooper made me want to continue this journey with likeable--sometimes goofy--characters in his sequels, which I will put on my TBR after this fun launch!
I won a Kindle version of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.
While this was an interesting story and concept, it wasn’t a book I enjoyed. For the most part the programming and theoretical science worked (a nice thing to read), but the jumping timelines were tiresome after a while. Granted, science fiction is not always my cup of tea. I had issues, too, with some of the character traits and some lack of character development (including Justus was great, but his storyline faded as the main story progressed). This is probably a 2.5 for me overall.
I have a taste for time travel/multiverse books. Among my favorites are Ken Grimwood's Replay and The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North, both ones that touch on the mortality of seeming immortals. Bump Time takes some of those themes and blends it with the twistiness and distrust of Primer, an excellent time travel movie. If you're a fan of any of those, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this, though it is quite character driven and uses a micro view of macro events.
Another good read from Mr. Cooper. Like his previous series, this one has a super intelligent AI as a central character. Unlike the previous series, this AI is not exactly one of the "good guys". Usually I am not a fan of time travel stories, but this author takes a unique approach (at least to me) that makes the whole business palatable and even seemingly logical. Well written, fast moving and now looking forward to reading book 2 in this series.
This time travel saga is different from so many other because many of the rules we have come to expect are being broken. Multiple characters from different years interaction being one change and an AI contacting to start the whole chain rolling. Very confusing but it keeps you begging for more.😊
I really enjoyed Cooper's unique approach to time travel. It gave you just enough information to unravel the mystery, but kept you guessing the entire ride. I did at times find the numbering a tad bit confusing, but overall did not take away from the enjoyment of the read. Awesome job, Doug. I will be reading the sequel.
I enjoyed reading this book that concerned the development of an artificial intelligence machine that also uses time travel. The characters were interesting and engaging.
Note I said "enjoyable". Yeah, some points of the plot (like the main villain) were a little weak, but the entire book was extremely entertaining. Unique premise that I haven't seen done before. I mean it's "time travel", sort of, but not really. Very clever.
Witty writing, especially when it came to interactions between the different versions of the main character. I mean, imagine getting together and hanging out, or working on something with older and younger versions of yourself. The jokes and pranks and hazing of the youngest one that would ensue. It had me rolling in laughter numerous times, and my wife wondering what the heck I'm over there reading.
Remember the TV show "Sliders"? Suppose one guy found a way to slip from one time stream to another and back - but it only worked for him, no one else. This is a character-driven tale of human-AI interaction. Enjoy!
AI versus humans in an ultimate game of time control
Well paced read, this mind twisting tail keeps you engaged, while the author has also done a great job of making sure we can follow the timelines. Definitely going to read the second book. Nice set up in the ending.
Very enjoyable. Interesting plot and likable characters. It was a lot of fun to read. If you like time travel and alternate universes you should give it a read.
I don’t get the high reviews. I kept reading to the end as painful as it was because I thought it would get better. Just boring then it just ended abruptly. Not going to read the rest of the series.
