A Throne for Sisters #3

Una Canción para Los Huérfanos

Rate this book
--Books and Movie Reviews (Roberto Mattos)

Duly Impressed

I can’t believe how fantastic these books are! I read so much that it takes a lot to really impress me these days. A refreshing new storyline to follow. I’ve already preordered the fourth in the series.

3 stars for timeline improvement!
We get "a few weeks" to learn how to be a stabby swordsmith and a couple of days as an errand runner before becoming a war hero! We'll just ignore the *30 second* lesson on raising the dead before Kate claims mastery and scuttles off to go un-kill people.
It would make more sense, in a fantasy world, if Kate's "gift" was expedited learning. Instead, she's just a very dense and angry teenager who continually complains about having to repay the witch a debt for the meathead powers she DOES have. Maybe don't sign a contract for magical powers if you don't want to pay the cost? Just a thought.

And Sophia is a wet piece of toast, I don't even care about that storyline.

Please don't read this book/series/anything by this author. If only I had the discipline to stop reading shitty books after I start them. Unfortunately, I don't, and now I have to finish the series or I'll think about it for the rest of my life (looking at you, Sophie's World from 2005)

Amazing Book

I inhaled the book. It was hard to put it down and do other necessary things. Again the story line keeps you hooked with each character playing the roll needed to make you love or despise or feel bad for them.
I highly recommend the series.
Morgan Rice, you have an amazing skill at writing!! Thank you for keeping us entertained with your stories.
Looking forward to the next in the series.

To review this, I am going to break it up into categories:

First the characters: the sisters are finally starting to grow and learn about life, themselves, magic, and the past. They have just enough personal growth that I am finally starting to like them. I almost dropped this series after book two but I am glad that Rice is investing in character development. The forest cat is a nice addition. Angelica is just not a nice person, and so far makes the best villian with Rupert and the Dowager. I still can't get into Sebastien though, he is so so so one dimensional like most of the other characters. I am now waiting for a Siobhan Vs Master of Crows showdown too.

Story: Is finally smoothing out, becoming a little less full of plot holes. Now that the story is pointed in one direction I want to keep reading. I don't love cliff hangers but feel invested at this point. The sisters' past is coming into light and creating more potential to build the series on.

Grammar/typos/editing: This book is full of just blatantly bad editing, using the wrong character's name, typos, etc. This is why I can't go above 3 stars, it literally ruins books for me to keep tripping over poor writing and editing.

Overall i would still recommend this more for young adults, as an adult I very nearly dropped it at first but now will read out the series. I can't get past the poor writing, but the potential of the villians and story saved it.

In this book we have a lot of Kate fighting like crazy and Sophia running away. Both of the sisters are learning all kinds of new things and getting much stronger along the way. We also get to see into Angelica's mind a good bit and in my opinion her and Rupert would probably be perfect for each other. Of course this book is full of twists and turns like the other 2 before it. The more things that are revealed in this series it really leaves you wondering what the heck happened and who will come out on top. Also the cliffhanger at the end! We all know by this point Morgan Rice is the queen of cliffhangers, but OH MY GOD! Obviously I immediately started book 4.

I have book two and three as one volume but wanted to review this one separately.

The sisters are caught up in their own fates, Kate in the army and still owing Siobhan, while Sophia makes an arduous journey in response to a mysterious past.

This installment is fast-paced and is told from several points of view...each one intriguing and interesting. Character development increases and further secrets are revealed.

Overall, an excellent and enjoyable read; if left on a cliffhanger.

Highly recommended.

Not my favourite read among all of Morgan Rice's offerings. I found the pace slow and extremely predictable. The good brother vs the bad plus the old "usurping" queen mother - who knows exactly who our heroine is - pulling everyone's strings to suit herself. Add in the mysterious forest-witch "coaching" the younger sister and everything just rolls along in an orderly kind of fashion. With more books to come in the series, this doesn't even qualify as a cliffhanger. I'll be thinking very hard before moving on.

Good read

I really do enjoy this series. The characters are interesting and the story line intriguing. The only real issue I have is the times lines. The flow isn’t always smooth and I catch myself going “what” because this timeline doesn’t fit. From the start the events do not feel natural and often feel rushed. But it hasn’t stopped me from continuing. The base of the story is really good.

Love This Series!

At first I was hesitant to read a YA book about princes and magic, but the first one was free, so I went in, but skeptical about the ability to catch my interest. I was, quite thankfully wrong. This is a well written series that is more than satisfactory for this adult book worm. Now for books 4 and 5!

The girls have progressed. After being thrown out of the palace, Sophia sets out to try to find out what happened to their parents. Kate continues her life as a fighter using the training that she received from the witch. Their lives have diverged but you know that somewhere, somehow, they will live the lives that they are seeking.

An enjoyable book, but Rice is actually criminal with her endings: abrupt and devastating. This third book shifts the series into top gear with heaps of revelations and explanations. It lost 3 stars off my expected 5 star rating with the jarring success of the unskilled assassin. Also, the farcical final events on the ship were a joke. Totally ruined the otherwise great book.

Just keeps getting better

How else to explain the series besides that each installment gets better and better. The only thing to make it even much more is if the author would make it one or two books instead of the short hundred plus but not quite two hundred pages.

A captivating story that had me purchasing the next book in the series before I finished the current one! Even though the story is a fantasy, we all can relate in some way to each character and their struggles throughout the series.
