The Locket Thief: A Darcy & Elizabeth mystery

Rate this book
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy become entangled in the matter of a stolen locket in this lighthearted mystery. This is the first book of a series that will follow their love story with a bit of larceny, bribery, and mischief thrown in! Miss Caroline Bingley accuses Lydia Bennet of stealing her locket during the Netherfield ball and Elizabeth Bennet decides to find the culprit and see her sister Jane matched to Mr. Bingley. Mr. Darcy of Pemberley, though he once gave Elizabeth an insult, becomes her partner in solving the mystery of the locket thief. But when the Bingleys leave Netherfield with Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth is left to mark off her list of suspects without Mr. Darcy's assistance. It is not until she is in London with Jane and the Gardiner family that the true thief is revealed.

Sleuthing

This is a charming story, if a bit simplistic. In this version, in spite of Darcy's insult of Elizabeth at the assembly, she is a little more tolerant of him, especially after he helps to calm a crisis made at the Netherfield ball by Caroline loudly accusing Lydia of theft. The ensuing collaboration of Elizabeth and Darcy to discover the true thief, leads to more understanding between them, even though Wickham shows up to start giving Darcy a bad name for past grievances. Elizabeth is suspicious of Wickham's claims right from the start in this story.

This is a low angst story, with an easier road to resolution for Jane and Bingley. The story ends abruptly after Jane's wedding, and shortly before Elizabeth 's visit to Charlotte in Hunsford. The locket thief is uncovered through the efforts of Elizabeth and Darcy, so the next installment must have a different theme. This book is well written and well edited. I recommend it.

Fun mystery

A simple little mystery that has Lizzy and Darcy working together. Think of the 30s movie about the Thin Man except the he and she couple are not married... yet.

The only flaw thar really stood out was the muddy handprint. If thar was Wickham and he went into the study to rob it, some mud should have been left inside somewhere.

I recommend the story.

I enjoyed this light and pleasant mystery and thought the author did a great job with the plot. It kept me interested and at times I got a chuckle from Lydia and her behavior.
All in all, not my favorite but it does rate a 4 star rating for the writing and plot. I am not sorry to have read it.

Too Simplistic.

The synopsis of this story alludes to the fact that Mr Darcy and Elizabeth join forces to discover the person who stole Miss Bingley's locket, but in actuality, Mr Darcy does not even feature other than as an occasional topic of conversation for nearly 30% of the book after the locket is stolen. The sleuthing for most of the time involves Lizzy's solitary ruminations and an occasional comment to Jane. Mr Darcy did draw up a woefully meagre list of possible suspects and shows it to Elizabeth but then he and the Bingleys quit Netherfield and the locket seems to be forgotten by its owner. Elizabeth does enough worrying over the locket for everyone.

Jane and Lizzy go to London with the Gardiners, whose four children's ages correspond more closely with the Bennet girls. Lizzy is particularly close to Henry, closest to her in age; they are more like brother and sister than cousins.

After Jane and Lizzy visit the Bingley sisters and the unwelcome task for Caroline and Louisa of returning the call is over and done with, Mrs Gardiner ensures that Mr Bingley is brought back Jane's orbit by immediately inviting all the Bingleys as well as the Darcy's to dinner. This plan had me shaking my head because there is no way that Mrs Gardiner would have asked the Darcys—a family she has never met and one on a very different social level than they are themselves, being in trade and living within sight of their warehouses in Cheapside—to dinner, and there is no way Darcy would have accepted, as he would never have even heard of the Gardiners. It just would not have happened. But happen it did.

The whole theft of the locket underlines the story, but for me it was a very flimsy plot point, especially when the injured party, Miss Bingley couldn't have cared less about the theft just so long as they left Hertfordshire.

To me the story was very unlikely and far to simplistic. I did finish it, but I did not really enjoy it. And be aware that this is only the first book in a series. A generous 3 stars.

Jane and Bingley have their happily ever after once the locker third is revealed. Instead of marrying from Longbourn, they married from the Gardieners ' home. The Gardiner children are closer in age. Henry is the oldest and begins to admire Georgina. Elizabeth, Henry, and Darcy expose Wickham and Miss King. Lydia refuses to believe that Wickham exposed her as a thief because she gave him her hankerchief.

Exactly as expected. Darcy and Elizabeth working together? A few conversations for 90 pages in total for his effort till the final showdown. But the originality of the premise gets a 4th star!
