I typically don't read self-help books. They just are not enjoyable to me. I like to read to escape, but I am doing my homework, so this is one of the books I chose to read. I enjoyed that it was not a book of information overload and outlined steps to take to be able to thrive. However, the steps do have minimal information it could have used more details in how to execute it and what you do when you don't get the results you want

I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review:

I really recommend this book. Honestly, this isn't the kind of book I would normally read. I generally want to be entertained, not educated. Imagine my surprise when I WAS entertained as well as educated. I wish I had read this book 20 years ago! The book is extremely well organized and gives references to further reading so if a subject catches your interest, you can move on and learn more about it. I love the way the author uses examples from her own career to illustrate points and drive home mistakes I know I have made as well. Anyone who wants to be a good supervisor or a good employee can benefit from the lessons in this book. You will not be disappointed if you read it, I know I certainly wasn't. Thanks Ms. Miller for giving me the opportunity to enjoy your book.

Supervisor Doesn't Always Mean Super Leader

I have been blessed to work with two exceptional leaders in my career. One of them was just named elementary principal of the year for my state. The other was a runner up for a national award in adult education. Both of them recognize the value of their team and they care.

In from Supervisor to Super Leader, author Shanda K. Miller, describes practices that can help anyone become a better leader.

As a new-ish supervisor, From Supervisor to Super Leader is spot-on relevant to my work-life, and often to my non-profit board position as well. Overwork and overwhelm have been constant companions in my job, and they keep me from wanting to read about work during my personal time, but this book gets right to the point in a concise, easy-to-read format. I especially appreciate the key takeaways at the end of each chapter and how the book integrates advice from other leadership experts whose books I haven't taken the time to read! I've started to incorporate Shanda's guidance into my meetings, interactions, planning, and self-reflection and I look forward to taking the self-assessment (I already see more than three I know I could use some work on), starting my 6-month improvement plan, sharing the book with my peers, and easily picking it up again when I need a reminder.

Solid leadership advice!

I originally bought this book to help with research I was doing for my own book. I was quickly taken in by the way the author walks her readers through what I think are expert relationship building practices. Sure she gives great advice on how to deal with subordinates and teams. But her expertise goes the extra mile when talking about the importance of developing a good relationship with your boss. This is a great read for anyone starting out in a management role, or someone just looking to polish their leadership skills.

This is a decent and quick read. I read it for a professional development class I participated in at work.

It was basic advice. However, it was good reminders and refreshers to how to lead. It also gave great practical advice to implement. My boss is going to have all our supervisors on our team read it.

If you want practical steps for leading, this is a good book to get you going.

I'm only giving it 3 stars because I would have liked more depth.

This is a book that I think anyone in a leadership position or looking to grow into a leadership position should read. Then reread again every year for a refresher. I found most of the information useful in some manner, I just wish it would’ve been more fun to read. I enjoy a storytelling format best and this book was not that - it was very much information based.

A quick read with valid pointers on honing leadership skills. Nothing earth shattering here, but the recommendations are sound. The book promised to provide strategies to improve work-life balance and to maximize productivity. i wouldn’t say it fully delivered in that regard.

A super quick read that basically serves as a summary of a bunch of other leadership books. If you haven’t spent much time reading these books, it’s a helpful crash course. Otherwise, it’s rather repetitive.

I have two great bosses that lead and listen, so I'm always on the lookout for help making myself a good leader too. This book has some great tips that seem like common sense, but can get overlooked.

It was a lot of common sense leadership but a nice refresher if you feel like you forgot the basics

Got it from Shanda via LinkedIn when she requested feedback for promotion. This is a good book for someone new to supervision and had an array of practical and actionable advice. There are unfortunately too many books that are too vague and generalized for new managers and this is not one of them.

Though I wish people in business writing and even in academia would get the memo that Myers-Briggs Type Indicators are pseudo science at best and should be kept to team building exercises for groups full of types who regularly check their horoscopes if even that.
