What a high, with hair raising situations and unpredictability! I was totally empathizing with Caspian being so miserable, been robbed off-again!- of his desire for freedom. I was really sad, emotions running deep! I love the way Eric has incorporated Box, the “sentient” robot as part of the main characters. It gives a whole new and different dimension to the story. One just can’t help but love him; he and Caspian complement each other very well, forming a disparate and fun team. A mysterious threat, a peace seeking mission, hatred and derogatory treatment from fellow crew members make our protagonist’s life a turmoil, his resilience pushed to the limits. A fascinating display of hardship and strength, of powers at play. This has been a great demonstration of diplomacy at work, political and military refineries. A fast paced, entertaining and action full premise. I loved every minute of reading it. It’s always a pleasure to read Eric Warren’s books. Looking forward to read book 3, Darkest Reach.
I received an early version of this book from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.

Received as an ARC copy, this is a honest review. Caspian thought he could finally move on and escape into deep space after his service aboard the Tempest; only something more dangerous is about to descend for the Coalition. An enemy they may not be able to fight against and they turn to Caspian's help in getting aid from the Sil- a very mysterious race that no one has had any contact with in a long time. Facing long odds and hatreds of his past, Caspian fights to achieve the goals laid before him ( enduring some painful diplomatic lessons); as the Coalition faces an uncertain future. Eric Warren not only excels at delivering a highly intense journey but a thought provoking one when it comes to what makes us human and different from other species. Prepare for an intriguing read. Highly recommended.

Caspian Robeaux has a new mission! That sounds pretty strange considering he’s still a civilian and definitely not part of the Coalition. While he thought he and Box would take the USCS Winston to Procyon to start a new life without any contact with the Coalition, that didn’t happen. He was called back by Admiral Shanghvi and told some information that no one in the Coalition knew about, but that information could result in the death of everyone. The Coalition needed Allies and that meant they needed the Sil.

If you remember back, the Sil was the civilization that fought a war about 200 years ago with the Coalition. Now an unsteady truce held between the two separated by light-years of space. While former Admiral Rutledge was now in the brig, he had almost started another war with the Sil by attempting and successfully stealing one of their ships. That story is all in the previous book. Now that the true facts are known by a few in the Coalition military, they want that information kept quiet. Additionally, they wanted the only person to have had any contact with the Sil to act as a first contact with the Sil. This is where Caspian came into the picture, again!

So, the new mission assigned to the Tempest was to attempt contact with the Sil and then gain their cooperation as allies against this oncoming threat. Cas thought this was a suicide mission and that everyone on the Tempest would be dead immediately upon entering Sil space. Even Box wasn’t sure about this mission. He tried to integrate with the crew, but just like Cas, they treated him like machinery and that didn’t set too well with him. He spent most of his time in the cabin assigned to Cas and then was restricted to that space after a run-in with a Lieutenant that wanted to destroy what he considered a dumb, but dangerous robot. This kind of hatred for both Cas and Box was clearly on display all throughout this mission and it nearly cost both of them their lives.

Of course, Cas didn’t always explain his actions before he ran off and did them. As a civilian, he didn’t have to follow anyone’s orders so he did choose to do what he wanted to without explaining why. That caused trouble with the crew and with Box.

Still, the mission was the foremost important thing about this journey. It had to be successfully accomplished or there was no point in them going back to Coalition HQ. Is Cas up to the job. Can he convince the Sil that he was truly looking out for them on that first mission where he tried to warn their scout ship? What happens if he can’t even recognize the Sil as beings and they and humans have no way of communicating. What if the Sil just blows up the Tempest on their first encounter? The Tempest has no way of protecting itself; the Sil technology is too far advanced for the Coalition to deal with.

Interesting read with a lot of twists and turns. Just when you think Cas has done something he’s going to regret, it seems to workout and lead to something else. I like Box being around, but I think he could have been worked into a larger role. Lastly, Admiral Shangvi has offered to reinstate Cas’ commission. Would Cas ever put the Coalition uniform on and if he did, what would be the consequences?

*A sequel that mostly felt like it was building up for the next book*

Tempest Rising is the second book in the Infinity’s End Space Opera series about an exiled officer and his robot sidekick roped into trying to save the galaxy.

I enjoyed Caspian's Fortune, but the sequel was middling. It opens shortly after the first book with Cas being strongarmed into a dangerous mission and his robot sidekick Box along for the ride.

For one thing, the sentient robot obsessed with watching tv dramas reminded me too much of Murderbot but without the humor. This sequel felt like filler content. There was not much action. Most of the story was just characters bickering. So there really was not much character development compared with the first book.

The whole thing really felt like it was just setting up the next book. Even the introduction of a new species of alien kind of fell flat. Even though this was less than 300 pages, it took me three days to read since I didn’t feel compelled to find out what happened next. Then there was that extremely abrupt ending that added to the feeling that these were originally a longer story that got separated out into episodes/novellas.

I still plan on reading the next book, but it's lower on my list now. It’s also weird to me that there are some short stories set in-between the books. Which is strange since they are only novellas to begin with. Surely whatever is in the short stories could have been added to the novella? But I don’t intend to find out since as a general rule, I avoid in-between stories. If it didn’t fit in the actual books, it’s usually unnecessary content. So I will eventually read the third book, but I’m skipping the short stories.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book, since finishing the first in the series.
This book does not disappoint. Sometimes with a series the first book smashes it out of the park and then the following books kind of miss the ball altogether. This however continues the story in what is an effortless ability to story tell.
The characters continue to grow and are
faced with decisions that will change them forever. I love that Box brings that perfect balance of sass and humour. My heart hurt for him in this book, and was so happy that Box found his ‘thing’.
Cas continues to battle with his demons, fighting against what he wants to do and what he has to do. With him always trying to make the ‘right’ decision however leads to others constantly questioning his loyalty and his reasonings.
With the threat looming closer Cas and crew must now look to assistance from an unlikely source. A must read for any sci-fi fans!

Good fast paced novel

Very enjoyable and hard to put down. The only nit is that I don't feel like I know the main character. He seems to be different people in different scenes.

Much better then the first book.

Good second book for this series. A lot of personal growth, more a case of shaking off nasty habits and starting some growth then a revision of character. Relativity in space is much better as well.

The second in the Infinity's End saga, see's our reluctant hero Cas and his sidekick Box, re-joining the crew of the USCS Tempest and their friends Evie, Xax and Zaal as they go ask the Sil for help. Which in itself is problematic as the Sil are renowned for keeping to themselves and the last time the Coalition interacted with the Sil, Cas lost his commission and his freedom and the Sil lost their lives.

The stakes are ramped up with the future of both Galaxies are at risk. Cas starts to find his way again, Box finds his calling, and they both find an enemy in Page, who is a general muppet.
The second book continues on with the fast-paced action and touches of humour that are liberally sprinkled throughout. The characters continue to develop, well except Evie, who I hope we see more of in action in the next book and we see her interact with Cas and Box more. Though I did enjoy learning more about the rest of the crew, Zaal, Xax and Sesster all take a step forward and their alien interactions with Cas and Box and their differing viewpoints on their parts of the ship build up Cas’ world and add layers to the story.

A great fun and interesting read. I have already started the third one. Though I have just seen the advert for the eighth in the series, so it looks like I have a couple of months in these characters company.

Tempest Rising picks up from the end of Caspian’s Fortune, with Cas and Box still on the Tempest, recovering from the destruction of the Reasonable Excuse, after Cas used it to destroy Veena’s ship, and the weapon that was stolen from the Sil. In Caspian’s Fortune, Warren wrote a book full of intrigue, and political infighting that outlined the Sovereign Coalition and the Sargan Commonwealth, as well as introducing the Sil Sanctuary.
The Sil are a race of Xenophobes, preferring to execute (after a trial of course), rather than speak to an inferior species. However, Cas tried to save one of their ships when he was previously in the Coalition.
And this is why Evie sought him out, for a secret squirrel mission to help the Coalition with the Sil.
As such, they are off to go and find the Sil, so that they can fly Cas out front as a peace symbol to at least get close enough to hopefully reach speaking terms.
The Coalition are desperate, having seen an enemy, code named ‘Andromeda’ coming that can destroy Suns with a single blast. (You can see a little kid from the Andromeda mob, pushing a little Empire kid, “Our Super Weapon is better than your Death Star – only destroys a planet, so much for the power of the dark side…”
As well as having to deal with the Sil, Cas has several other issues he has to confront aboard the Tempest. Whilst Evie and the Captain are aware that he is no longer a traitor to the Coalition, the rest of the crew are not. As such, he is met with disgust at every turn, and outright hatred from some crew members such as Lt Page, the Head of Security.
Tempest Rising continues to develop the complex character development that began in book 1, with the further development of the relationship of Cas and Box, Cas and Evie, as well as just the overall development of the individual characters. We are introduced to the Sil Consul Zenfor, who is a fascinating character, and the Sil, as well as Zenfor, are some of the most extraordinary characters in this book. One of the other interesting characters is Sester, the Chief Engineer. Sester is an alien, and I will let you read about him rather than describing anything here, but the descriptive work by Warren is just outstanding. He has put so much thought and effort into the world building of the Races, the Worlds they come from, and the Technology that they use. It creates so much more depth to the story, leaving you totally engaged.
Warren does a remarkable job in exploring the utter hatred, fear, and disgust that members of the crew have towards Cas, as well as some of the other characters have, such as one of the characters, Zaal, an alien, is rather fascinated by Cas and invites him to dinner as he wants to get to know him better. As mentioned, Lt Page has so much hatred that he hunts him through the ship, as well as box, looking to do him harm. As a former Police Officer, and having seen corruption and how it affects other Police, I found Warren’s description of these characters to be exceptionally realistic, and very powerful and emotive. His writing can be very gritty, and remarkably life-like, regardless it is incredibly clever, creative, and utterly engaging, you will find yourself totally engrossed in the book, unable to put it down, telling yourself “only one more chapter, only one more section…’ until you suddenly realise that it is 4am in the morning and you haven’t stopped.
As I said earlier, Cas has to navigate the crew as well as a few other issues, to try and gain help from the Sil, so that he can bring them aboard the Ship to try and get their help with upgrades in meeting this new threat that can destroy not just planets, but entire stars. The fate of the Coalition hangs on his shoulders this time around, and yet, his only friend is a quirky robot with an obsession for soap operas.
Doesn’t matter what type of Sci-fi you like, you will love this series, it is totally brilliant, and you just can’t miss it.

A fabulous continuation in the 'Infinity's End' series. Caspian is once again having to deal with the Coalition, but at least his enemies have now been dealt with... well, most of them.

Cas is given a job to do by the Coalition. A life or death challenge, really, and it could - easily - go either way. They think that because it was Cas who saved the original Sil ship, the Sil would be more open to him than any other human. Cas is not so sure that he wants to play this game. Who can blame him? Someone, still, is intent on making sure that nothing goes smoothly, and that the probability of Cas being killed is raised 100%.

This is Eric Warren at his best. The storytelling is so fantastically smooth that you'll zoom through the pages, and be looking for more of the same. I adore Box and his foibles, and the characters are realistic and full to bursting with guts and emotion. Action, fun, intensity, laughs, entertainment, adventure, you name it, this has it all! I loved it.

I chose an early copy of this book which I voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.

Cas is back and he has to take on another mission for the Coalition. Just when he thought he was free! A truly fabulous continuation of this sci-fi series and I absolutely loved it! Great characters, excellent world-building again and so much action you almost get a full on workout from reading the book! Really looking forward to seeing where the series goes next!

Definitely 5 stars

If you happened to come across my review of Book 1 of this series I was torn between 4 or 5 stars but decided that the fact that I needed to stay up to read book 2 (this one) meant it must be a 5 star read.
Well dawn isn't that far away and I just finished another 5 star read.
As much as I want to go straight to book 3 I can barely focus so that will have to wait an hour or five for some sleep to happen.
Maybe a sickie is called for today. Hmmm.

What if the Federation of the Star Trek universe wasn't so squeaky clean? The Coalition government here reminds me a lot of the United States government of the future from Demolition Man. Cas is a solid lead character in a fast paced story, and I'm going to jump right into the third installment from here.

My second read of Warren. I’m all in! I really enjoy the universe that he has created. The characters picked right back up, just like I remembered them. It didn’t feel like a sequel. It is like one giant story played out in episodes. Love all the detail and continuity. I couldn’t put it down once I was 3/4 finished. Loved the tension he was able to convey. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a good story.

It’s OK

The science in book two is less definitive, especially with the descriptions for Sil technology. It was also difficult to follow the action while onboard the alien’s ship. There is more to the series and I’ve not decided if I will continue.
