Plus notes and commentary, a message from creator Kosuke Fujishima and your letters!
Kōsuke Fujishima (藤島康介, born July 7, 1964) is a Japanese manga artist.
Born in Chiba, Japan, he first came to public attention as an editor of Puff magazine, his first job after completing high school. Fujishima originally intended to be a draftsman, but took the editorial role after failing to get a drafting apprenticeship. He later became assistant to manga artist Tatsuya Egawa in the production of the Making Be Free! manga, and in 1986 began his first original manga series You're Under Arrest. His second manga series Oh My Goddess!, also translated as Ah! My Goddess, is extremely popular and has made Fujishima a household name in Japan. In addition, he is also well known as the character designer for several games in the Tales RPG video game series and Sakura Wars.
He is known for his love of automobiles and motorcycles, and several of his series and their characters reflect this, such as in éX-Driver and Oh My Goddess!.
World: The art is beautiful, it’s not fully developed into what this series is known fo yet but there are snatched and hints of it. The character expressions and the interactions and personalities are beautiful. The world building is as much as needed for the story to progress, this is a long manga so at this point in time it was still finding it’s feet and the large cosmic rules was still being developed.
Story: This arc was one of the first to have a larger arc than previous books, where those were mostly one and done or two parters, here we have a long arc and it’s fun. The story is basic the gender and roles was much more from a bygone era when this was okay. I see the issues now but tween me loved the beautiful slice of life story and the interactions and the bubbly basic romance and situations. The Terrible Master Urd story was interesting and as I said above was the first story with a larger story and built towards a larger world so it is fun and interesting.
Characters: Keiichi is the archtype for a lot of manga male nerd characters and his good intentions and naive nature is on full display here. As is Belldandy which is the epitome of a ‘girlfriend’ manga character, it’s basic and these archetypes comes from a long time ago when it was still beautiful to see a relationship like this, it has a soft spot in my heart. The sister are great and offer interesting chemistry and banter and zany situations to give this slice of life book character.
I love this series for it’s nostalgia, it’s a bit dated but yeah it’s still pretty great.
Rejoice goddess fans for the youngest of the trio of sisters has arrived in this volume as little Skuld brings us new insight on how the great machine that is heaven runs. Now with all three Norns (yes that is what the three sisters are based on) in the story things are going to get even crazier as we see Urd finally pushes the code of her office to the breaking point and her heritage on her mother's side come to light. Will Belldandy be able to stand against her wayward older sister? I certainly hope so considering there are some 43 more volumes to go. :)
One of the great manga series that makes me laugh. Talk about more problems for the happy couple Bellandy older sister and younger sister pay her visit when she making homemade chocolate for the one she loves for Valentines day. It is going to be a lot of trouble and messes in this volume. A must read.
In this volume, we get some worldbuilding: Belldandy and her sisters Urd and Skuld are revealed to be the Norns (the three Fates) from Norse mythology. The mash up of Norse mythology and science fiction alien tech stuff in this world is a lot of fun.
Yggdrasil, the world tree in Norse mythology, is a cosmic supercomputer here. Oh, and Odin's horse, Sleipnir, makes a quick cameo appearance, further reinforcing the tie-in to Norse myths. In this reality, Skuld is a system programmer for the universe. Reality-warping shenanigans ensue!
This manga is such a fun mash up of disparate things: it's part romantic comedy, part gods vs. demons, part sci-fi, and contains a mix of Japanese customs, Norse myths, college drama and race cars. Too often, stories get locked into specific genres with their own rules and conventions. I think the longevity of Oh My Goddess! (48 volumes in the original Japanese!) speaks to the fact that you CAN put a ton of unrelated elements together and come up with something amazing.
Valentine’s Day episode! Yeah it happens and chocolate is involved.
The third goddess Skuld shows up, and she is okay. I’m not big on the little sister type characters.
More Mara and someone’s true nature is revealed?! Yeah stuff happens in this one. This simple magical romantic story now has battles between demons and goddesses. I’m enjoying it. This one ends on a cliffhanger, so you have to read this next volume.
This volume is heavy on character development, heavily developing Urd's true nature and Mara, a recently added villain. I personally find Urd's origins to be fascinating, but she was always my favorite.
I’m alway going to enjoy any kind of oh my goddess manga I’m happy to have read it and will continue to read it and hopefully soon enough watch the anime adaptation overall I recommend this as a fun cozy short read with battles.
The introduction of Skuld in this volume was sort of ho-hum for me... things get a lot more interesting as we learn that Urd has demon blood in her and is the heir to the Lord of Terror. Somehow I get a feeling that she won't be able to destroy the universe, though.
