"Together they invented a magic map. They traced a journey around the world and they flew far, far away."
This is a noteworthy African American picture book that collages photographs in order to present an imaginative tale of Mariah and Joy as they go on a creative adventure in their house on a rainy day. Instead of cleaning up (which their babysitter encourages them to do), they use a magic spell to put a monster (or a gray cat) into a trance and go on a journey until the weather clears up and they can play outside.
Aside from the references to magic, we liked this book. The imagination, change of perspective and encouragement to kids to explore a story of their own making on a rainy day are all excellent. We checked this book out from the library the same time we got, "Below" however, and this book, at least in the world of little boys, just couldn't compete with her other. Somehow this one just seemed a bit long and second best.
