Dos corazones en peligro

Protagonistas: Hugh Armstrong y Kate Cooper
Argumento:

It has been a while since I ventured into a romance novel (try 1992's Love Lessons by Sandra Lee), but since I recently met the author, I quickly picked up this book at a recent thrift shop visit. It is enjoyable quick read about a couple Kate and Hugh who meet at Kate's twin sister's wedding. Sparks fly quickly until a case of mistaken identity causes the couple to put the brakes on and question the relationship. With the wedding as a backdrop, the drama plays out until the inevitable outcome of leaving together for a happy future is achieved.

I must admit that I didn't read all of this, I did skip a few pages. I really only got into the sex scenes, which were pretty good. I did enjoy reading this, though I picked up on "he made love like an angel". I mean, how many angels had she known? Anyway, it made me giggle. I do love reading VLT stories, but not so keen on some of her older books. 3☆

With the preparations for her twin sister's wedding in full swing, Kate Cooper has been sent to the airport to pick up the best man's brother. Harry is wildly sexy, and heroic to boot. There's only one problem. He's not Harry...

This was kind of a fun read, but nothing high quality. The prose was... Prose Lite, shall we say. Lots of tell and little show, e.g. 'The wedding itself had been put together inside of a month, a speed that had left even Kate breathless. A few tongues had wagged, saying that anyone who got engaged in May and married in June must have A REASON, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.' Also, the plot devices were very tired and uninspired.

But the worst part of the book was the heroine, who can probably claim my reward for Least Favorite Heroine Ever. She's shallow, idiotic, selfish and a huge flip-flopper. From the very beginning she's portrayed as someone who's so excitement-seeking she purposely makes herself late for things, and thinks it would be more interesting to have to hunt Hugh down in the terminal instead of waiting for him at the gate. Negative point to Kate for being a ninny, and negative point to Thompson for really, really reaching to show the reader what an "excitement junkie" Kate is.

When Kate mistakes Hugh for his brother, she misinterprets some comments he makes, and with the words 'A chill ran down her spine. Had she finally found her hero?' our tortuous journey through countless horribly awkward (for the reader) moments during which Kate internally refers to him as her 'hero' and 'prince' in a countless variety of ways begins. They've only known each other a few hours, but because she thinks he's someone he isn't, and he doesn't flinch when she tells him about her flaws, and he's shy (he's not particularly, he just told her that to cover up a hesitation he made), she believes he's The One. Oh, but 'he probably [just doesn't] realize yet that they were meant to be together'.

Of course all that changes when she realizes he's a Hollywood stuntman instead of a doctor. Then he becomes a 'faux hero, a guy with all the trappings and none of the substance.' What a shallow ditz. (And she's not the only one. From one of the bridesmaids: '"Damn, but I shoulda lost those ten pounds before this weekend. Maybe I should starve myself between now and the wedding, go on a twenty-four-hour fast." She frowned. "But then I might faint."')

It's also ridiculous that Thompson chooses superficial ways in which Kate and Hugh are similar to show how they're soul mates - like that they both take creamer in their coffee, and they both order the same entree at a restaurant.

If you can get past those things, you might be able to enjoy the story for the quick, light read it is. It is well paced, Hugh is a decent hero, and the sex is hot.

The book was fine. The inscription makes me think that this author is related to one of my previous students. That kind of weirded me out while I was reading the book. I wouldn't mind reading some more about Cooper's Corners.
