Ask In Prayer: A Faith-Promoting Journey

Rate this book
When I was eleven years old, I auditioned for the part of Amahl, in the Christmas musical, Amahl and the Night Visitors. "I wanted the part and wondered what more I could do to get it. I could pray! In the bathroom in our home, I locked the door to be alone and knelt on the beige tiled floor. I put my hands together, bowed my head and reverently asked out loud, 'Heavenly Father, please give me the part of Amahl.' Confident God had heard my prayer, and I would get the part, I sang for the selection committee.

The part went to another boy. My disappointment left me wondering why God had not answered my prayer. I knew God answered prayers. What went wrong?"

Does God really answer our prayers? One man of faith shares his lifelong quest for a prayerful connection with God.
Tom Bowers' boyhood hopes prompted him to pray. But he never imagined how God's response would set a pattern for his life. Through physical trauma, depression, and family tragedy, he kept seeking God in prayer.
Empowered by his devotion to Paramahansa Yogananda, he started a meditation group in Utah. At the time, he was a student at Brigham Young University even though he was not a Latter-day Saint. Later he united with Reverend Sun Myung Moon's vision of one world under God and became a Unification Church leader. Matched by Reverend Moon, he and his wife eventually accepted Jesus Christ and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His remarkable spiritual journey is a testament to the truth that God answers prayer in His own time and in His own way.

A detailed and personal search for peace

I believe the Lord knocks but He is not going to kick the door down! Free will involves making choices. We tend to over think the free gift of salvation. We make our path long and convoluted by our own choices. I grew up in this same town and knew many of the same people. My husband and I were married in that Methodist church. My path was a bit shorter than Tom's. Sometimes you just need to be still and hear the Lord. This is an incredible and detailed account of one man's search to find his own answers.

I was hesitant at first to read this book, to be honest. I do know this author casually, but it's sometimes intimidating to read something that is dear to a person and then give feedback on it! But I was fascinated by this journey of faith. I didn't know any of these stories and it really kept my attention. I loved learning about religions I had never even heard of before, and since we share the same religion currently, it was neat to see his journey to find that faith. I was constantly impressed by his optimism and willingness to do whatever was asked of him by his faith leaders.

Read like a journal. What a treasure for his family! After a few chapters of history, I was looking forward to stories and interchanges of life that would move me and inspire me. Instead, I was left to find those inspirations in the chronological journalism. The chronicle of events lasted the entire book, which was tedious for me and not what I would normally pick up to read. A surprise treat was that I knew many of the people in the book because I am from Poughkeepsie, NY!

Spirtual Journey

This is a fascinating book about one man's journey to find peace and meaning in his life and also a testament to the power of God's love for each of His sons and daughters.

Review for book ‘ Ask in Prayer’

I enjoyed reading this autobiography of Tom Bower’s personal spiritual journey over a span of fifty years. Quite insightful and poignant at times when he shares intimate details of his personal struggles to connect with God and find the Truth.
