Have a drink on me is a personal account of an artist at the height of his powers, and an intimate view of the lows that ended tragically in his early death. It is a tale of loss, but also a reminder of Bon Scott's dazzling talent, unmatched energy and fearless determination to live his dreams - rare gifts he gave the world of rock. In 1971 Irene Thornton met Bon Scott, then singer for local band Fraternity. Between them there is a unique spark and they marry in 1972. For the next few years Bon Scott continues a driven but difficult journey towards AC/DC and rock 'n' roll fame. Irene offers an unsentimental account of their lives the bitter winters in London with Fraternity; the drinking and drugs; the group living and frayed tempers, and the broken dreams and inner demons. But she also shares details of their relationship and her ringside seat watching Bon create and perform the music that put AC/DC on the world stage.
I was going to give this book 4 stars but then it ended up being a 5 because it really really touched me. I loved the writing of Irene Thornton and I would read another book by her not on Bon Scott she really knows how to write. The level of intimacy you get in this book with Bon Scott is five stars alone. The ending was a real tearjerker. Thank you very much for this awesome book. The letters from Bon in his language and slang were almost like he was talking to you himself. What a great man and a great singer thanks for this book an incredible addition to any fans collection if you really love Bon Scott like the author did and does
I read this after Jesse Fink's books and this is so much better. This is warm and loving and funny and not at all what I thought it would be. Irene doesn't try to mythologise Bon, she treats him like a real person and it makes everything natural and so much more interesting. She sounds like a really fun character herself too, it's clear why Bon liked her. I'm so glad I gave this a chance. If you're an AC/DC fan I think you should too.
I thought Irene did a great job. She was so warm and real. It didn’t feel like she sugar coated anything. Bon felt like a real person. Thank you Irene for writing this book. I read it because of Bon but I am seeing you as a real person too, not jus Bon Scott’s wife.
I'm kind of surprised there's not more reviews for this book. It's a must read for any Bon Scott fan. There's other books out there that are also good, including one that focuses more on his death and if he wrote the lyrics to Back in Black. But if you're a fan of Bon's, you can't read just one book about him. This one is written by someone who was closer to Bon than anyone. Highly recommend.
Entertaining, funny and interesting book well worth reading. Factual and informative A good read about a Rock icon who was lost to the industry far too young.
