“I’ll always want more of you.” Robert McKenzie lives to work. He’s fresh out of university as a video-game entrepreneur, and his new app could actually save lives. But burning the candle at both ends means missing out on the best parts of his own life—including his boyfriend, Liam.
Liam Carroll works to live. His job as a bartender pays the rent—if not always the heating bill—and that’s plenty for now. But Robert’s workaholism reminds Liam his own life is going nowhere, and his own dreams are scaring the pants off him.
To jolt them out of their ruts, Robert invents a new game: He and Liam are to take turns offering each other sexy new challenges with irresistible rewards.
Of course, Robert gets more than he bargained for, as Liam takes their game in one surprising direction after another. Whether it’s in the bedroom, on the football pitch, or at the pub (or even the supermarket?), the things they learn about each other—and themselves—could change their lives forever.
Play Hard is the feel-good, staying-in-love story the world needs right now!

Play Hard is another impressively written addition to this sexy, sporty, and seriously Scottish M/M romance series.
Revisiting besties-turned-lovers, Liam and Robert, a year into their romantic relationship, was certainly not a hardship; it was heart-warming to see how happy and in love these two still were.
Here, we get to follow the boys as they purposefully work to grow as a couple and as individuals, both professionally and personally, while still having fun and loving each other madly along the way to long-term happiness.
Although not my favourite couple of the series, I can definitely appreciate just how perfectly these two lifelong friends fit together as partners in love and life. It also doesn’t hurt that they are smokin’ hot together, too, with the steamy scenes in this instalment being some of the best of the series to date. Oh, yes!
As always, the social commentary here is on point, adding to the depth and quality of what makes these books particular favourites in the M/M romance genre for me. Honestly, I’m not even a football fan, but Cockburn could keep releasing Glasgow Lads stories and I’ll keep coming back, time and time again, without a second thought, because the quality of these characters and their romances is just too damn good to pass up.
Seriously, probably the most sexy installment yet!
However, never fear as Cockburn always brings the socially relevant to this well loved series, never shirking the swoony romance, and definitely outdoing herself here, revealing how Liam and Robert are doing several months later. Though life often gets in the way, these two ultimately realize what and who’s important, and they show each other that over and over and over and over again just how much!
Whoo-eee! This started right off the bat and didn’t relent! *fans self*
Again, oh so smexy dirty hot (a manties appearance might further entice), interspersed with some fabulous poignant feels! Read!
Ahh, this hit the spot. It was exactly the follow-up I needed to Playing with Fire. Liam infuriated me so often in that book that I ended up unsure whether he and Robert belonged together, despite their long history as best mates. Here we see them a year further down the road, and yeah, they belong together. These guys are the real deal.
Becoming lovers while still being best friends transformed their relationship into something greater than the sum of its parts. Their playfulness and loyalty and irreverence and devotion -- not to mention their extreme mutual horniness -- was on full display, and I enjoyed every minute of it. It gave me the feels I hope for every time I read friends-to-lovers, but seldom get. I am an extremely satisfied reader at the moment. 😍
And we're back, phew! I was really sad that I struggled with the fourth Glasgow Lads so much but PLAY HARD brought back all the feels, and the excitement, I've had for so much of this series. The fact that it was a novella and, upon finishing, only made me want more? Win win win.
Despite always knowing he was gay, he'd remained clueless about a lot of queer realities, and in his ignorance he'd said some hurtful things when Robert had revealed his sexuality.
I loved the focus on this particular couple because of the bisexual rep and some of the discussion (mostly off page or as introspection) regarding some of the bi-erasure that occurs both within and outside of the LGBTQ community. I always love how Cockburn weaves some serious element or relevant topic into her fun sports romances and this is just yet another example of that great balance. It gives some depth and realness to her characters because no one is perfect and we're always learning.
"I know you'd want to be with me no matter which gender or sex I was."
Also, it was steamy af.
"Did you get inspired whilst fucking me?" "After. But I'm sure it helped clear my head." "Ooh, my arse is your muse." "It is amusing."
Funny, always brilliantly diverse, with a setting that I love coming back to, I'm looking forward to more both from this author and this world.
** I received an ARC from the author (thank you!) in exchange for an honest review. **
Thirteen months after the beginning of their relationship in Playing with Fire, Liam and Robert are still going strong and having fun, Robert’s workaholic tendencies notwithstanding. I love these two guys and their dynamic, they are so sweet and playful, I adore how they have moments of deep feelings and serious conversations and the next—or even the same—moment they’re laughing about something. They can be real and intense without taking themselves too seriously, it’s a combination that really works for me. By the end of their book I was completely sold on how good they are for each other and this follow-up novella only confirmed that. They’re still a work-in-progress, they’re figuring out life as they go, but they’re doing it together, supporting each other and making each other better, not losing sight of what’s important and not forgetting to have fun along the way. And I had a lot of fun right along with them, they made me laugh so much! I wasn’t expecting some of the things they came up with, and I was surprised that one in particular didn’t put me off like it usually happens when I stumble into it, but thinking back I should’ve known that their characteristic down-to-earth and endearing approach would make it work like everything else. It was also nice to see that
Another great read in this series. Again more than just a fluffy epilogue. This still had good spice but also nice extra relationship development which I think worked really well for this couple, more football and some interesting real life stuff. I thought the part about Robert being so focused on his work and phone and not being present in the relationship felt particularly poignant. Overall a wonderful addition to Robert and Liam’s story.
Wish Jamie and Perry’s book had come out, says it was set for 2022 but looks like it didn’t happen. This is so disappointing! I’d very happily read endless books in this series!
More Glasgow Lads? More Liam and Robert? Aye, and they are pure dead brilliant! I always enjoy checking in with couples that I adore “later on” to see what’s happenin. Especially when it’s a couple that’s just as silly and they are sexy. Liam and Robert have been together forever but the dynamic changed when they ventured from best mates to boyfriends. And despite being perfectly suited they are still navigating the fresh waters of their enhanced relationship. They love each other fiercely and they are happy…enough. But could it be better? Are things slipping into a groove of convenience? And what can they do about it? Life is kicking them in the arse. How can they ensure their link remains tight? Recognizing a priority shift is in order is the first step. Creating a delightful (ahem and kinky) game of sorts is the next step. And allowing their competitive streak to obliterate doubts and drifts brings victory. If you loved them before, I am certain you will…fall head over heels this second time around.
What's to like: Robert and Liam are facing a crossroads that many couples experience. The turning point of moving forward and holding steady. Robert is racing along on a fast track of success, paving his way with blood, sweat, and tears. Oh wait? That’s footie! He’s been given a chance to make his dream career happen and he’s not about to disappoint. He has no choice but to throw himself into his work 26 hours a day. He loves what he’s doing but to say it’s time-consuming would be an understatement. Juggling his compulsive workaholic tendencies and football and Liam, well, some things are slipping. He’s been distracted from his personal life because he’s so intently focused on his professional life. To make matters worse, Liam is facing the exact opposite. He IS stuck in a rut but he likes this particular rut thank you very much. He likes his job serving at the pub. Course he doesn’t want to do it forever, but he’s in no rush to move along. Because it’s not just his future he’s taking a gamble on. Food in the cupboard and a bit of heat at night are not luxuries he’s taking for granted. And truth be told, he’s a bit scared of what lies ahead. But yer aff yer heid if you think he’ll admit it.
What's to love: Avery shakes up their predicament with sharp Scottish humor and smoking hot loving. I adored their playful snark. They are quite a pair and push each other higher and higher. It’s always refreshing when a couple shares a continuous loop of energy and bring out the best in both partners. And the challenges! Gahhhhh! So. Much. Fun. I couldn’t fight the grin on my face if I wanted to. In addition to the silly and the sexy, there is an added layer of feels. It was awesome seeing some of the rest of the gang again too. If I had to find a fault, I’d only wish it was longer. Which would be greedy since it’s a novella, but I can admit when I’m feeling needy. And the Glasgow Lads bring out my gluttonous side, I feel insatiable when I venture into their world. I’m hoping they continue to carry on because I intend on following them every step of the way.
Beware of: Established relationships aren’t everyone’s bag, but I couldn’t get enough. This is definitely not a stand-alone, please proceed in proper order. And naughty boys turn up the heat, prepare for some steamy seduction.
I forgot how much happens here because I mostly remember skipping over all the sex scenes. But it was nice to spend some time with Ben, Evan, Fergus, Jamie, and the others. And it was definitely nice to see Robert and Liam communicating and getting along and working on their relationship in a healthy way. And of course, that
Original review June 2019:
This was very sweet and very porny. Way too porny. I had a hunch going in due to the blurb, which is why I borrowed this one instead of bought it, and I'm glad I did. There were just too many sex scenes for such a short book and most of them I couldn't be bothered to read. But if you're looking for a pornmance, this should definitely scratch that itch.
What I did like was seeing how Robert and Liam are still navigating their way through their new relationship. They've been together romantically for a little over a year, but they've been best friends for sixteen years, and sometimes those old BFF patterns can tame down the flames of romance. I liked how Robert came to a new appreciation of Liam, and how Liam was able to eventually open up to Robert about his fears of the future.
I also really liked the scene where Evan and Liam talked. Liam still hasn't warmed back up to Evan, so it was nice to see Evan helping him sort out his thoughts and feelings. Now that I like Evan, I want all the Warriors to like him again too. :D
A decidedly hot and cute meet-up with Liam and Robert from book 3 in the series. Loved catching up with these two, but considering this is a novella, there was too much football in the middle part!
I said it before but I’ll do it again: LIAM ❤️❤️❤️❤️ The way he talks, his humor, his everything... He’s one of the greatest characters ever and even if Andrew and Colin are my favorite couple in this series, Robert and Liam are not far behind. Their chemistry, their banter, their social commitment and the way Cockburn describes and shows us Glasgow through them. Brilliant. And this was hot and sexy and I’m missing the lads already. I guess I’ll have to try that curling spin off.
Catching up with Robert and Liam in this novella made me realized ... I really don't care about Robert and Liam. I don't care about Robert's work, and that he's a workaholic, and I absolutely don't care about his app game. I don't care about Liam and his conflict of finding a job he loves too. And I don't bloody care about their sex *shrugs*
The only time I care about Robert and Liam are when Robert is talking to Ben and Liam is talking to Evan. I guess I want to read an update about BEN AND EVAN instead.
I so enjoyed catching up with Liam and Robert. I did go back and read Playing with Fire again, as it’s been a while. The couple is a year down the road and Robert is wrapped up in the business he started. He and Liam must find a way to help Robert achieve better work/life balance and Liam to find a bit more courage to improve his future. Along the way, we are treated to the very sexy, mildly kinky rewards! This is a fun and tender look at the continuing growth of the men, both personally and in their relationship. Highly enjoyable.
Anyone who follows my reviews knows how much I adore this Glasgow-based series based on an LGBTQ football team.
So when Avery said she'd been writing more Liam and Robert, I couldn't wait to read it and it's a pure delight.
Just like the city herself, this book has heart-stoppingly beautiful moments, great bursts of humour, and a deep sense of belonging.
It's also stupendously sexy as Liam and Rob decide they need to find ways to challenge and reconnect with each other and deal with the fears of two young men, just out of university and making their first steps into adulthood.
I love everything about this series, the friendship within the Warriors, the real feeling of place that comes with the Glasgow setting, the authenticity of the writing and the lives being depicted.
So, in Liam's own words Be Less Shite and let the Glasgow Lads bring you joy.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
This was a sweet check in with Liam and Robert. I really loved how open Liam was and willing to call Robert on his bull, he's working to much no matter how important his work is. This was a sweet, sexy story for these two working out boundaries and figuring out how to be better partner's to each other. I like that Robert sneakily pushes Liam into wishing for more and accepting that he can have more. Great little addition to this series.
A slice of life is about adulting with Rob and Liam. The sex games are kinda inventive but the minutiae of app building was beyond boring. It was a realistic look at figuring out that balancing family/friends/work/dreams/ambitions with the reality of paying the bills is pure life.
Nice to catch up with Robert and Liam again. Yes, we do have some footie in this story, reconnection between Liam and Evan [making up at last], and ideas for computer games fizzing between Rab and Ben.
Settling into 'coupledom' is hard for anyone...of whichever/whatever sex. We all fear being boring and predictable, of our partner finally getting fed up with our little quirks and foibles and seeing us for what we truly are but shouldn't we have a little more faith in ourselves and in our partners really?? Rab and Liam are definitely in it for the long haul, and should be able to talk to each other about anything...eventually 😊. Happy to see them reaching decisions about their future livelihoods...which ought to mean that they do get to spend more time with each other.
This was a funny, charming, witty tale with lots of footie and even more shenanigans.
Liam and Robert have been best friends since childhood and together as adults for a year. When Robert worries that the minutiae of life will get boring and they'll have nothing left. They both work too much, too hard. So when he comes up with the idea of a game to spice up their life, things start to get interesting... and fun... and a bit sexy.
I laughed so many times. These guys were all grins and fun and the love between them was vast and deep. The games they played and the jokes between them were awesome.
This was a highly entertaining story with a lot of heart and a lot of heat. I'd absolutely recommend this read for a nice morale booster and a sweet ending.

Robert McKenzie and Liam Carroll began their relationship in Playing with Fire, and while this novella is labeled a standalone, and at the risk of contradicting the author, I’d recommend reading their novel first. If you’re like me and need to see where characters and a couple got their start, it’s a must. It’s not an easy read—none of the books are, really, because they each deal with outside circumstances that work against the couples, whether it’s religion, politics, social status, economic hardships, or dark secrets. Robert and Liam’s conflicts were manifold, and their relationship was further complicated by them being best friends, by Robert’s bisexuality, and by the way Liam saw things through a lens of what I’ll just call skepticism (or pessimism or pragmatism; anyway, you get my drift). Add to that the fact that Robert was working towards a career that would leave Liam behind, tending bar and struggling to make ends meet, and you have the perfect storm of angst. Play Hard is the payoff for what readers watched them go through, now seeing them continuing to build on the foundation they’ve established while still coming up against some real and relateable challenges.
Robert and Liam are each other’s biggest fans and their coordination on the football pitch, how well they complement each other on the field, plays into how well they work together off the field. The city of Glasgow continues to be a character unto herself, especially for Robert as the app he’s developing is geared directly at the city and the people who inhabit it, and the app’s success hinges, obviously, on people wanting to use it. This becomes important as Robert’s workaholism overlaps into and affects his and Liam’s time together. Their chemistry in the bedroom is still off the charts, no question there, but it’s the myriad little intrusions on their time together—always a text or an email or a flash of inspiration that needs addressed immediately—that brings them to an epiphanous moment. Putting their relationship first is the one thing that matters most, and the means by which Cockburn has them resolving this issue is so sweet and satisfying.
The Glasgow Lads have consistently charmed their way into my readersphere and have continued to win my love, book after book, through stories that are, at their most basic, about hope and pride and falling in love, and Cockburn’s love of the team she’s put together, as well as for football itself, is entirely transparent. Getting to revisit the couples in their companion novellas is such a great way to follow them into their happily-ever-afters. Long-time reader, long-time lover of this series, don’t see that changing anytime soon, I do have a favorite couple—I think everyone who reads the series does—and that will always be Colin and Andrew for me, but each one of the couples has something about them to love and embrace. What they go through to be together for the long haul isn’t always easy but it always pays off in the end, the way a romance is supposed to.
If you’ve read Playing with Fire, do not pass go, do not collect $200, go straight to your e-book retailer and purchase this story immediately! It’s a fantastic continuation of the love story between Robert and Liam which started in that book. But it’s also so much more. Filled with humor, love, friendship, romance, and sexy times, reading this story is like looking through a one-way mirror into the heart of Glasgow, Scotland, and coming away with a picture of everyday life.
As the blurb states: “Play Hard is the feel-good, staying-in-love story the world needs right now!” So very true! Liam and Robert were friends from the time Liam got into trouble with a teacher in grade school and Rabbie decided Liam was the kind of kid he wanted to hang with. Fifteen years later, they are still besties but, now, also deeply in love.
Liam still hasn’t decided what he wants to do career-wise while Robert is deeply enmeshed in his startup tech company developing an app to improve the health of Glaswegians who die at an earlier age than others in their country. Liam has the potential to be a massage therapist but is concerned it will be boring and not half as demanding and fun as his role as a bartender. We learn the real reason for his hesitance later in the story when he shares his fears with his lover.
Robert is a workaholic. He knew it before he took the online test to confirm it and their relationship is feeling the effects of their different shifts and Robert’s work ethic. To help them overcome the strain, Robert invents a game that takes them to new heights of pleasure in each other’s company. No, not a sex game. It’s more of a push-our-boundaries-in-new-ways game, and it’s not only enjoyable for them, it’s also delightful for readers as we get to know the characters much more in-depth than in the original story. In short, this book endeared these characters to me, and I won’t likely forget them for quite some time. The author’s wonderful sense of humor is woven throughout the story, as is their appreciation for their homeland.
As I said before, if you’ve read any of these books, don’t miss this one. And if you haven’t, read this anyway. It can stand alone and it can spark your interest in reading the series. I not only want to meet these men and watch a game of footy with them, I purely want to revisit this beautiful city in my grandda’s homeland.
This novella is diving further into Rob and Liam’s life, closely after“Playing in the Dark” ended. Cockburn deftly weaved about the anxiety that racked this couple for different reasons and the way they worked around the issue. It’s sweet, jocular, and as steamy any as Rob and Liam’s story usually are. It’s refreshing after a rather different path and a lengthy tale of Ben and Evan in the previous entry, to read this novella. The two characters also put more than two cents into the story and our MCs’ mind; all in all making PLAYING HARD a nice addition to the series. Bring on more “Glasgow Lads” stories!!
Advanced copy of this book is kindly given by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Great addition to the series, it was nice to catch up with Robert and Liam again and be apart of their shenanigans.
I love Robert and the way that even though he is a workaholic and can be oblivious to things, when he is made aware of them he does what is needed to remedy the situation. His idea here for the games with Liam was a cracker and well suited to their relationship.
I was unhappy with Liam in the previous book, but he redeemed himself a bit here. He explained himself well to Robert when things weren’t going the way he wanted and listened when people gave him advice. He seems to have grown up a bit
Po raz kolejny autorka pokazała, że można w połówce skupić się na czymś więcej niż tylko na seksie. Można napisać połówkę znowu całkiem długą i naprawdę pokazać dalsze losy pary - w tym przypadku Roberta i Liama z Playing with Fire. Dla mnie naprawdę duże brawa dla Avery Cockburn za połówki w tej serii, tak zazwyczaj inne od tego, do czego nas przyzwyczajono 💙
I've always enjoyed this series and all the ways it's uniquely Glaswegian in its language, feel and setting. This novella has lots of appeal and a revisit to one of my fave couples. I really appreciated the rawness in the storytelling and how insecurities, foibles and mistakes aren't glossed over. It also happens to be quite sexy in places. 4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ahhhh.... a lovely addition to this entire series. I was wondering where this would go but as was with the main book for Robert and Liam, it wasnt dramatic or fraught with insurmountable challenges. It was just lovely to catch up with them 🥰
I missed the Glasgow Lads so very much! I loved catching up with Robert and Liam's relationship as it matured with issues of balancing work/home life and the pressures of transitioning from young adult to making career choices. Let's face it...we've all wondered what we want to do when we "grow up" and whether we're making the right choice. But all that matters is that you have that other person in your life and for Robert...it's Liam and vice versa. These two get down to some steamy challenges to keep their relationship fresh and wow. Some of these were just perfection. This story was fun to read and see the guys break out of their comfort zone and embrace the spontaneous side of life.
I swear sometimes I’m such a ditz. I didn’t realize this was a part of a series until it was time to read it and by then…..well. I do recommend reading the others first, BUT, not having read the other books first, I still got an overall picture and could kind of figure some things out. But it’s a good story. It’s all about reconnecting on an intimate level. Robert has been spending way too much time working, and is being neglecting other aspects of his life. Especially Liam. Liam has tried not to complain or make comments about it, but it is starting to get to him. He wants his boyfriend and lover back. But he also knows Robert needs to keep his mind going with challenges. So they need to make a compromise. Robert comes up with an idea to help spice things and reconnect them. He feels horrible for having neglected Liam because of work, but he’s going to make it up to him. And the challenges are definitely helping. It’s keeping their sex life very active and explosive but it’s also become something extremely intimate and loving. Now if they can just keep it going, because Robert’s ideas are making him brainstorm more for work and Liam is scared because he wants to take on a new job in life. I really enjoyed getting to meet these guys. I’m not a huge soccer fan, so that part wasn’t for me, but I appreciate it anyway because I love sports in general. But what I really loved about these guys, is they recognized the problem and were willing to do whatever they could to fix it. Even if the idea seem absurd at first. They wanted to keep the love they had alive and fresh and be intimate again without work interfering. Yes, they both have to work. But it’s something that doesn’t have to overtake their lives. They need to compartmentalize and that’s what Robert really has to learn. How to have that balance for work but not neglect everything else in his life as well. http://lovebytesreviews.com/
