R to L (Japanese Style)

Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the "Scissors Project" at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty's call...

It's time for the final match in the All-Japan Beauty Tournament, but Narumi and Ochiai are increasingly at odds with each other as they fight over Kiri. Can the Scissors Project win under such circumstances?

VIDEO SERIES REVIEW: https://youtu.be/ofD5iW0yxLk

I am so sad this series is over! It has been such a wonderful adventure and have loved reading about these characters. I actually cried at the end. LOL!

For two reasons though. One I can't say because of spoilers, but that one scene was unexpected and it just ripped out my heart strings. The second was because I was deeply sad it was over, though happy too because everyone had a very lovely ending. I was especially pleased about Kiri's family. <3

The contest was SPLENDID! I can't get over one of those page spreads. So. Good!

Overall, this was such a satisfying ending. I was surprised how Narumi finally confessed his love to Kiri and LOVED the part with Billy. That was deeply moving. <3

What do I do with myself now that it's over…? *grabs tissues*

One. Million. Hearts.

I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove this series! Then ending was a little weak, but all in all it is one of the most wonderful mangas I have ever read. And that's saying something because it has to compete with Inuyasha, Black Bird, Fushigi Yugi, Absolute Boyfriend....

It was absolutely spectacular. I loved all the characters and all the relationships that formed between them. Normally, I don't go for this type of manga (generally the more "magical" story is my taste) but the art, the storyline, and the characters all made it one of the most enjoyable series ever to exist in this world, and I am unashamed to admit that I cried at the end. *starts clapping because she can't think of a good conclusion* Well done, Kiyoko, well done. <3

As I said in reviewing the earlier volumes, the series as a whole is between 2-3 stars for me, so rounded up, but the last two volumes are not as strong. It has its funny moments, and the art is enjoyable, but mostly I'm enjoying it now as a nostalgic reread from high school.

I hated the ending. TaDa! It's now 10 years ahead! I know we all want to find out what happened to the characters we've been enjoying, but it's just such a jump. Plus, am I the only one who preferred Ochiai to Narumi?

I kept reading this series because I liked Kiri and I liked her 2 friends. The romance was meh.

*Warning, there will be mild spoilers*

This review will consolidate my thoughts on the last three volumes of the series, given I read them between doing homework for my second semester of grad school.

I'm very happy I stuck this series out. Beauty Pop starts off feeling like a product of its Y2K days with its characters, tropes, and weak comedy, but I felt like Arai was able to tinker with Beauty Pop to give it something different compared to its contemporaries. I felt the romantic subplot towards the end of the series was well handled, especially where Narumi was concerned. I had a feeling the endgame was pointing in the direction it went, and I'm pleased. We were able to see the Scissors Project succeed despite rivalry in The Past threatening to thwart their goals (and promises of nepotism). The makeover for the All-Japan Beauty Tournament's final round also came full circle to this series' start. That was also a very smart decision, as I could see how far Kiri had come since joining the SP. She now knows hairstyling is in her future after feeling ambivalent towards it.

There was some stalling in the previous volume that thankfully evened out with Arai's finale, despite her art dipping to its starting point. Some of the angst that felt melodramatic was more appropriate here too. Seeing us travel back in time for one of the bonus stories was another great touch that made me realize how I'm going to miss Beauty Pop's simplicity as I pivot towards series I haven't read in a while or at all this year. This will be one manga I come back to on a rainy day, even if the volumes are hitting OOP territory. I'm going to be emulating Ferris's dedication with that pursuit.

This is a really different manga to read because the main character's give-a-damn is super broken. So, you've got all the typical manga stuff happening--people making bets with consequences you're not sure how they're going to enforce, love triangles, people bumping into each other and somehow falling down in a way that makes them kiss--but you only see reactions on one end. You can never really be sure about how Kiri feels about anything. I liked it; I will definitely try to work in that "add a little magic" line into my life for a while.

it was a very 'mid-level' but cute and refreshing read. the MC was the chillest, tomboy but not forcing it, feminine and cute, calm female protagonist i have seen and read about for a WHILE. the male protagonist was not bad too! though it's a little bit sad that we didn't get a lot of exploration for his character and life, overall.

I guess this manga is more heavy on the comedy and slice-of-life compared to its romance aspect. Nevertheless, a lot of the moments me smile. And, no toxic masculinity here!! LOVE IT!! all of the characters pursuing a dream that is respected a lot in this manga's universe and i have to say, respect. The author breaking boundaries of romance school life chick-lit mangas and using tropes not many used, especially since this manga was that old!!

just a mini rant, ignore if you're not interested :
a bit (alot) of the minus that i'd have to say though,, it how the plot went no where for like, a big chunk of the manga, and then the plot progresses very rapidly in the middle, with plenty of chapters just introducing characters that are 'enemies' to the main cast but then casted off pretty quickly, needless drama that just created empty tension, not really adding anything? to the story? and the ending was soo rushed i had to look back and forth to see if it really was the end. I shouldn't really judge based on the romance, since i think this series really was not meant to be representing that, the time skip made no total sense, if you're trying to pin it with the last few chapters. The emotions was kinda all over the place, i don't know when nor how the MC ended up liking the male protagonist apart from being friends, and the "second male lead" said he won't give up in the end but then the time skip,, nothing happens and that he moved on??? what???

I didn't think i could get my hands on all ten volumes, but here we are!

After a great number nine, we have a good final volume. I love the way all the characters come together at the end.

I wish there were more scenes with Narumi and Kiri, though. It does seem a love born out of the blue. But hey, the story was good and the characters were extremely nice, what more could I ask for?

4.5 stars.

It would have been nice to see more of the future at the end instead of a story about a girl being in "love" with Narumi or to get the romance developed a bit more on Kiri's side. I liked that Narumi's dad got told off for caring so much about a pair of scissors.

3.5 stars for the series overall.

The series was very repetitive and a bit too ridiculous. The SP would make somebody over and then a professional who shouldn't care about them at all would come by and get super jealous of a group of teenagers and try to break them up.

There were a lot of similarities to Ouran High School Host Club.
Kiri was nonchalant and indifferent like Haruhi (and they both move to America at the end of their series).
Kei was like Honey; they both were always eating and got along with everybody.
Ochiai was Kyoya, always quietly scheming to get what they want.
Narumi's dad was just like Tamaki's dad. They both make fun of/dote on their son and expect him to take over as the head of their company and attempt to shut down their clubs.

It's a fun series overall, but not a favorite.

Does this series spark joy? The answer is a Big No.

From start to finish the series follows the same plot in all 10 volumes. The Scissors Project finds someone to ”duel” against. The character developments is severly lacking. The author is writing in her sidenotes she wanted to do so much more, have a valentine day’s chapter, take them out on a date etc. But there wasn’t enough space?! The whole Billy plot line could have been skipped for those kinds of chapters!

If you just read the first and last volume yiu haven’t missed much. All in all a disappointment for a shoujo manga.

Definitely a bit rushed and kind of weird . But all in all a satisfactory end to the series. Even though there was a 10 year time skip it feels like a lot of the characters faces barely changed so that was interesting. It was also kinda weird that we never saw Kiri’s face after the time skip. Oh well, this was a very nostalgic series for me and I’ve very much enjoyed my reread. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s just the thing I needed to keep on reading every day while I’m in the midst of a horrible reading slump.

Yes, the ending was a little weak, but I adore this series. Kiri is so geeky and dopey and so bright and delightful. She's so lovable, and so are all of the other characters. Plus, it's just such a light and fluffy storyline that makes you happy when you read it. Brava, like always.

Honestly, this is one of those series that I was forgetting what was happening as I was going. There wasn’t anything to it, so it felt very non-engaging. I finished it, but it’s not something I’d ever go back to.

I thought this was one of the series I never got to finish when younger, but no, I definitely did. The ending is just so abrupt that I assumed my memory was faulty.

Wow, there are a ton of problematic elements I completely missed as a kid. This was never a favorite, but I’m surprised just how much I put up with for like 2-3 cute scenes in the entire series.
