Travel to the northern lands to search for the elusive moose hidden in every scene of this charming book. You'll learn about the animals and the changing seasons in no time with the informative notes at the end.
Firstly the presentation of the animals being sewn into the book encourages the children to be creative. Although the story is fairly simple it is very multi-dimensional as it could be used in cross-curricular activities as the end pages include information on animals in the northern lands. The sense of rhyme is a nice touch and makes the book an engaging read. There is a fun element of hide and seek to the book as the children can spot the animals that are included in the text of each page.
This is a nice story to share with KS1 about animals and their habitats, linking to science. It's engaging and interactive as the children can look for the 'elusive Moose' on each page to make it more enjoyable. The illustrations strongly link to textiles and children could have a go at using felt and sewing in DT. It has a section at the back which has information about all the different animals which feature in the back which could be good teaching points.
Join in this fun and colorful search for the elusive moose. Hint - you'll meet plenty of other interesting animals on your quest. I really liked Clare Beaton's fabric collage artwork.
Suloisesti toteutettu kuvitus! Pidän todella paljon tällaisista tekstiili-kuvituksista. Aukeamilla oli lyhyt virke liittyen aukeaman kuvitukseen. Kirjan lopussa oli pieni tietoisku sivuilla nähdyistä eläimistä.
I enjoyed this simple story. It is all about looking at the world within the story. It includes end pages with some detail about the different animals and tracks seen throughout the story.
We love this book. Aside from the fact that after our first reading, our then four-year-old ran around using the word elusive properly, Elusive Moose is a charming look at wildlife in North America's Northern woods. The rhyming text introduces you to a variety of animals and the beautiful felt and bead artwork by Clare Beaton is superb. This book is full of layers, providing end notes that provide plenty of detail on the animals and habitats in the story, and cleverly hidden on each page of this book? You guessed it...an Elusive Moose!
We highly recommend this book, it has continued to be highly requested by our now five-year-old son.
Living in Maine, a book about moose is a must read. I've read several books with this style of illustration, though I'm not sure they are all done by the same woman. I really like the sewn artwork as a change of a pace that provides a totally different look. What made this one super cute was the text, though. William was too young to get that the narrator kept missing seeing the moose, especially outside the tent! We had fun finding all the moose, as well as joking that animals that were not moose were.
This book is about what you can see in the northern parts of Canada. The book moves through all the seasons and is a nice read. The illustrations are what makes me love the book so much! They are composed of different kinds of cloth/ felts and then embroidered to bring out the details. Buttons, beads and sequins are also used to bring the pictures to life. And then of course, while looking at the pics, you have to find the 'elusive' moose hidden somewhere.
I picked this book up because who can resist the words elusive in a children's book title, especially when coupled with moose? It was a bit of a dissapointment, however, in terms of the text. It's a cute introduction to North American woodlands animals, however, if you want to teach those.
Love the way this is done -- it's sewn felt and it makes me want to be crafty. We meet all the animals of the northwoods, while the moose hides out in each picture until we finally meet the moose. I love moose. Stig loved all the animals and plants.
It might be difficult in a bigger group to spot the hidden moose on every page, but it is still a wonderful read with colorful illustrations. It tells about a person who really would like to see a moose but sees all the other animals of the northern lands.
Don't see picture book art like this too often - sewn. The scenes of animals are detailed and super cute. The rhyme is short enough that it might work for toddler time, but it may work best one on one. Definitely lots of points for sharing.
Used this as an example of quilted books and the kids were fascinated by the illustrations. They loved spotting what kinds of things were used to make the eyes or snow, etc.
My kids loves this book as the animals closely parallel animals found in nearby Canadian woods. The hide and seek element of the moose on each page keeps their curiosity. The animal tracks in the story lend themselves to lots of snowy day track finding.
