Siren Problems #1

Wolves & Monsters

Rate this book

They call me a monster but I’m nothing compared to the other things that go bump in the night.

Sirens have a bad rep. I know that. They say we lure men to their deaths with our songs. But I promise you, I’ve never lured a man. They always come to me willingly. Is it my fault that once they spend the night with me they seem to have bad luck? They make the choice to be with me. At least that’s what I tell myself. If I let myself think about the bodies I seem to leave behind, I would start to feel guilty. And nobody has time for that.

The problem is, I accidentally lured the wrong man to his death. How was I supposed to know the mage who tragically died after having sex with me was the son of the most powerful mage in the supe community? How was I supposed to know that a casual hook up would result in them sending some of the really bad monsters after me?

I’ve only got one shot at staying alive and it’s going to involve finding the one that got away. The only guy I ever loved. The problem is, when I left, I broke his heart. And werewolves don’t take kindly to being dumped. I’m sure nothing about this plan is going to go wrong.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

I fell in love with Chick's writing while reading her other series so when I heard about this new one I was more then excited to get my hands on it. I was not disappointed!!! Angie is a Siren with some wonky powers I must say. She has been living a pretty celibate life after running from her mate when she caves one night going for a one night fling. Things go pear shaped when she wakes up the next morning only to find the guy dead in her bed. The problem is that he has connections making it necessary for him to disappear. This forces her to go back to the Ex whether she wants to or not. Fascinating world building with all kinds of twists that were new making this a fantastic read. Totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Wolves & Monsters is the first book in the Siren Problems series by Dyan Chick. The Siren problems series is a new adult paranormal romance series. I thought this was a good first book. It is a little on the short side and it is very, very action packed so if you are looking for a fast paced read with a second chance romance and adventure, this is going to be a great quick fix book for you. Not to mention, it is has wet my appetite for more in the siren problem series.

I don't get to read too many books featuring a siren as the main character, so I was immediately intrigued by our main character Angie. Angie is a siren that feels like she is cursed. Every man that she has ever been with has died shortly thereafter. So when she actually fell in love for the first time, she high tailed it out of town so she couldn't kill him. But her newest death by siren problems has caused her to run back to the town of Crescent Falls to seek the help of her ex boyfriend, Jason. I loved Jason, and honestly I really liked Angie as well. Angie brings trouble with her to town, and the rest of the book is spent trying to figure out what demons have followed her to town and to see why they are trying to cause trouble. I enjoyed the adventure/demon fighting aspect of the story. It had a Buffy or Lost Girl kind of vibe to it, which I dug.

But I was hoping for a bit more romance(though I think that will be to come in the next installments) and a bit more information on Angie's Siren powers and why guys end up dead after sleeping with her. We got to get a little answer on this, but I was hoping for a lot more. I think that will be to come in the next book, at least I really hope so! I liked Wolves and Monsters, and I can't wait to see what is going to happen in the next book in the Siren Problem series. This review was originally posted on Book Briefs

Review originally published at Goldilox and the Three Weres and based on a copy provided by Rock Star Book Tours.

I've almost finished my Netflix rewatch of Lost Girl and when I saw the blurb for Wolves & Monsters, it felt like it might have the same vibe. Angie is a siren rather than a succubus, but her lack of knowledge about her powers and the supernatural world are similar to Bo's in the show. Other than that, it didn't exactly hit the same buttons since the book focuses on a much smaller group of characters and doesn't give much sense of the world outside the small town where it's set.

However, I feel like the Siren Problems series has a lot of potential. I liked the characters, especially the variety of paranormal creatures. I like the supernatural small town concept, though I'd like to see it developed more. I just felt like this story was too dark and heavy. Angie is so angsty it's hard for her personality to come through. I wanted more snark and light-hearted moments. But since I've enjoyed the rest of what I've read from Dyan Chick, I'll probably check out the next book in the series.

I recently read Chick's Dragon Mage and Dark Fae Mage series and really enjoyed them. There are sirens in those series, both set in the same city, but I'm not sure if Siren Problems is meant to be part of the same world. Neither of those deal with shifters much, so I'm curious about how this series set in the werewolf pack will go. I'm also excited to have discovered a new Urban Fantasy author.

Fun world with sirens and werewolves! Angie is a siren with a curse. Normally sirens don't actually lure men to their deaths, but something is wrong with Angie and every man she sleeps with ends up mysteriously dying from various causes. When the wrong man dies in her bed- a mage from a powerful family- she has to get help from the werewolf she left to save his life. But going back isn't easy and she doesn't know if she can leave him again- even if it is to save his life.
Another fun, fast-paced adventure from Dyan Chick! Doesn't necessarily end with a cliff hanger but there are definitely loose ends that are hanging for the next book! Can't wait!

Life as a siren isn't as easy as you would think. Especially a cursed siren. Being raised human was bad enough. Now that Angie's curse has gotten her in trouble with the Shadow Club, she has only one place to go. Back to Jason and his pack of werewolves. Will he help, or will his broken heart make him push her away?

I went through this too fast! I really like all of the characters and it has great world building so I got sucked in, and finished the book too soon. I can't wait for book two!

I seem to love everything Dyan writes and this book is no exception. The story is original and we see creatures that aren't normally together. Poor Angie has been raised without information regarding how her powers work. When the wrong man dies and she flees to her ex for help, she has no idea the trouble she is getting into. Now she must fight to save the town she loves and figure out how to rid herself of the curse. I look forward to reading more about Angie and Jason.

What a great read, action packed, humorous and full of surprises. This was definitely a great start to a series, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the storyline and the little town it’s all set in. You could tell this was just the beginning to a larger story and I look forward to reading more. Dyan did a great job, I love her writing style and definitely recommend this and her other stories.
