Alas, my Monkey Face was at home when I thought of using it with today's story time about "Art and Artists". Fortunately, I have performed this as a tell-and-draw story so many times that I dared to go ahead with it.
The assistant story time performer quickly searched google images for line drawings of monkey's friends: crocodile, owl, rabbit, lion, giraffe, and elephant. I grabbed an 11x17 sheet of paper and a crayon.
The crowd loved seeing monkey's modifications to his portrait of his mother as he showed it off to all his friends on his way home from school. They all loved it of course, but... Of course mother loves it just the way it is, and hangs it on the refrigerator for everybody to see!
Frank Asch re-did this story under the title "Bread and Honey."
This is probably one of my favorite "go to" books. I love to use this during storytime and have them draw along with the book to see what their monkey face will look like!
