A small but enchanting story about a girl finding her identity in a world of small hostilities. Teachers can't say her name, and classmates mock her family's traditional clothing.
Our ability to see the end coming doesn't change its import, and the excellent artwork here brings us fully into the world of these characters. Along the way we get tiny glimpses into foibles of childhood, the power of music, and our shared dislike as a species for the standard school lunch.
Highly recommended.

This is a story about identity. Duab is starting fifth grade and is being asked to share about her heritage in her classroom. She's concerned about how her majority white classmates will respond. It's a very realistic story about how a young person might feel on being asked to make themselves vulnerable by sharing about themselves.

A short, simple graphic novel tale about being proud of your (Hmong) heritage, putting up with your family, and not taking any guff from jerks, while standing up for yourself. There's so much positive here in such a short time that I contemplate handing these out at the next comics even @ my library.
