When we hear certain songs and bands, we start to build a rapport with them and then we become fans. Some of these connections are short-lived, while others can last an entire lifetime. Music can take us to places that we have never been before. The lyrics can also allow us to create images within our minds as we interpret the songs within our own heads. Contained within this book are short horror stories derived from titles of songs from my favourite band. None relate to the lyrical content of the songs, but I allowed the titles to form images that I could twist and turn to my own unique agendas. There are tales of future computer horrors, time travel, creatures unknown to mankind and tales of loss and revenge and a surprise appearance of a monster from the past.
Recently, I had the opportunity to read Distorted Visions and I was blown away by the connection with the short stories. As a fan of the band whose music inspired the chapter titles, the stories allowed me to think outside my perception of how I viewed the songs. What's even more delightful about the stories is the psychological terror that the reader feels as they turn the page of the anthology. The scenes in "Taste The Summer" took me back to junior high and watching one of my friends being constantly bullied by others. I have several additional favorites, but in the interim, I highly suggest adding this book to your must-read list!
I love author Martin McGregor's horror and dark paranormal books and I have especially enjoyed his Distorted Visions collection, based on the music of Duran Duran! I love the concept of short stories inspired by music lyrics, and I love how each story had such fun twists. A luxury vacation and a couple that parts ways.. but what really happened once they were parted, version A or B? A man and a woman confront each other on a stairwell. I didn't anticipate where that one was going. This collection was a treat that I enjoyed, a few stories at a time. Highly recommended! 5/5 stars.
