I must admit that I wasn't entirely sure about this book but was attracted by the fact that it is essentially about yoga for the face, and I was pleasantly surprised when it was evident that the author had extensive knowledge of health, beauty and lifestyle which she incorporates into the book. Not only is Ms Collins a World leading Face Yoga Expert, but she is also a renowned authority in Yoga, Nutrition and Wellbeing and it really shows.
Face Yoga has been scientifically proven to help you look younger in a study by North Western University in Chicago and by doctors in the BBC1 documentary ‘Twinstitute’. It will take rather a while to see results from these quick and easy exercises if there are any benefits or changes to the face at all, but I guess if yoga works on the body there's no reason why it wouldn't have an impact on the facial muscles too.
Rather than a book merely about the benefits of face yoga, there is lots of other helpful information, hints and tips and all are presented in manageable bite-sized chunks for simple digestion. This is the type of book that is more of a reference guide than a "read from cover to cover" affair and I was pleasantly surprised by just how comprehensive it was. I think this would be a great addition to the library of someone looking for a way to improve their facial appearance without spending a small fortune on lotions and potions or cosmetic surgery. Many thanks to Watkins Publishing for an ARC.
I'm always skeptical of things like this. Probably because things like "looking younger" and "face yoga" are often being touted by people under the age of 30 of Instagram. I dunno... I just have a weird aversion to people half my age telling me how to look younger.
I also have a strong aversion to anything that reeks of woo woo or "love and light."
That said, I do suffer from eye strain and chronic migraines which are exasperated by carrying much of my stress in my jaw. I'm always on the look out for things that might help to alleviate my painful head. And after a few months of doing some of the things in this book and learning about the anatomy of the face and neck, I think there might be something to all this. The book is actually pretty informative in regard to how the muscles in the face and neck work.
As far as the claims about altering the appearance of the face, I don't know. I do know my headaches have eased up some and my jaw doesn't hurt. That's more than enough for me.
I liked learning some new techniques for skin care. Most of the descriptions were easily to follow. Some were not and I felt like I needed a video instead of the single picture that was included. The book is broken into sections that focused on different types of exercises or different sections of the neck, head, and face. She also includes some good advice about what to eat a s drink for healthier skin. Nothing is revolutionary but it’s a good book to use to work on your face routine.
Easy, well-explained exercises. I’d give it a 4/5 if I weren’t so extremely grateful for the neck and jaw exercises, they legitimately work wonders if you’re someone who holds tension in their jaw and/or neck during stressful times
The benefits of a face lift without the pain or expenses.
This book is wonderful. Danielle Collins shows and explains how to tighten your forehead, eyes, cheeks, mouth, jaw and neck. Who knew that an exercise which involves tilting your head and touching the roof of your mouth with your tongue could reduce turkey neck?
Before explaining the exercises, the author takes time to discuss our bodies and the things that make us age. This is an invaluable tool in helping the reader feel younger and look better.
I received an ARC from Watkins Publishing through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.
I've been soaking up all the information Danielle Collins has to give ever since discovering her courses on the DailyOM. In this book, she not only gives you exercises for different areas of the face, but she also tells you what they are intended to do. Included are tips for skin care as well as affirmations to help improve the mindset around aging. As someone who is nearing 50, I'll take all the help I can get! I love this easy to understand, quick read.
Feels more like an eat, pray, love style gratitude journal with a lot of affirmations and uplifting messages. You'll have to dig through a lot of that just to get to the face yoga exercises. Would prefer a condensed version but I guess some would like to follow it as a weekly journal to accompany them for an entire year as it's designed.
While reading this I went through all or most of the exercises in 2 sittings. It was so invigorating that I bought the book and plan to add this to my daily exercise. It makes much more sense than an array of costly products.
This is a concise guide to lots of facial yoga exercises, and also includes tips on helping the appearance of your face. And finally there are some more general yoga moves to help with your facial exercises. The trick will be to actually do enough of them to see whether they really help. 3.5 stars
I admit that I was skeptical about Face Yoga, as I thought it wouldn't make a difference. However, after doing the exercises in this book for a few weeks, I can see a difference in my face.

To be completely honest, I was not familiar with Danielle Collins and her Face Yoga techniques before reading this book. As someone who does practice yoga, I was curious as to what this mysterious practice was all about.
“Face Yoga is a combination of face exercises, massage, acupressure and relaxation techniques that are designed to lift, firm, smooth, and relax the face to improve your overall wellbeing” (to quote directly from the book).
On the surface, it is a superficial practice meant to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, give you a youthful glow, and tighten and tone sagging skin. Many people believe that when you look good you feel good and vice a versa, but here is where my issue lies with this book. If you are only using yoga for vanity, then I think it defeats the purpose of what is supposed to be spiritual balancing practice. Anyone who knows anything about the mind body connection will know that our muscles and tissues store our emotions, and when you work those muscles you are able to release them. This is where I felt Danielle Collins missed the mark. I felt she did not go into enough depth about the benefits of Face Yoga. Sure it can make you look better, but what about the deeper metaphysics of it? What types of emotions are we storing in our facial muscles? Why are we storing them in our face? What are the spiritual meaning of wrinkles or acne? What is happening to us on an emotional level when we perform Face Yoga?
Danielle spent a little too much time outlining skincare techniques and how to care for our skin instead of focusing on the more spiritual aspects of Face Yoga. I also felt the book needed more pictures of the exercises because at times I didn’t understand how to perform the exercises from her written instructions. What I will also say, is that whenever you are doing any type of acupressure on the body, you stimulate a detoxification process, and if you are doing this on your face, you can actually cause more break outs. As someone who has used jade facial rollers in the past, let me tell you, you can get some nasty breakouts and in some cases, make your skin look worse.
On a positive note, I do appreciate aesthetics, and I love how her techniques are being used for those with facial paralysis and stroke victims as I feel great success can be achieved with her exercises.
Maybe Danielle’s purpose of her book was to only outline her techniques without going into too much depth about the metaphysics of yoga and the mind body connection, but afterall, beauty is skin deep.
