Ten-year-old, Danny Madsen, has been missing for four days when Jesse Carlton begins his own search for his godson on a frigid, snowy night. Driving along a deserted rural road, Jesse hits a stretch of black ice at the same time Danny appears from the thicket. Unable to control the car, Jesse slams into the boy and watches helplessly as Danny's body flies back into the dark brush.
When Jesse regains consciousness, he has no recollection of how he and his car wound up in a ditch. However, there's a witness: Charles Hastings, the sociopathic kidnapper who chased Danny through the brush and into the path of Jesse's car.
Hastings takes this chance to set up Jesse so he'll take the fall for both Danny's disappearance and death. And so the mind games begin--an onslaught of psychological manipulation that devastates Jesse, his wife, Danny's parents and the cops' investigation. Inexplicably, the torment continues even after the primary suspect is killed and the rollercoaster of emotions and confusion seems never-ending, until the final and devastating truth is revealed.
If you like gripping, suspenseful page-turners that keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end, this is a must read!
Oh my goodness! I literally bit my thumb nail which I never, ever do! Every night I chewed more on my nail. This story had me frantic at times. I was emotional and I couldn’t read fast enough but I had to slow myself down. My what incredible writing as his books always are. *I am glad I didn’t read the synopsis!!
I enjoyed the plot and storyline to this novel and how the suspense and mystery of what is going on builds up until everything is revealed. I kept trying to guess what was going on I love that whole mystery sensation of a book, and this book does just that - keeps you guessing. A well written novel from beginning to end.
A Broken Reality written by Rob Kaufman has made to my list of my new favourite books with genre, Mystery & Thrillers.
‘A Broken Reality‘ – a book named perfectly.

You get to know the characters and you also get to know how sick Charles Hastings is!
I usually get annoyed by the unnecessary comic relief characters. ‘A Broken Reality’ did a good job by not annoying me.
This story isn’t predictable or too revealing. You can’t guess what is going to happen next. (At least I couldn’t.) And even when the torment continues even after Hastings is killed will make you believe that.
It was amazing and worth reading. Not forgetting to mention it maintained my interest till the end.
It is a book full of emotions, heartbreak, and tragic moments.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing a copy of this book to me in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Charles was an interesting case study. . His childhood abuses were a large part of his identity. . But his projection of guilt onto Jesse alone and his rabid need for Jesse to assume guilty without he himself taking responsibility for his actions seemed psychopathic to me. I empathized with Jesse's plight of blackouts, memory lapses, and repressed memories . I empathized with Jesse because between him and Charles, he was the more likable and acceptable of the two characters. Rivera's wife's nonstop harping about not being home made me see red. What part of, it's the job, doesn't she get??? I felt I knew the ending all along, but tried to bury it in my mind that way it's not true. Lol The mind!! This had a crushingly
sad ending that verified the mind has its' own secrets. A stunning thriller of mind games. Most excellent. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
Definitely a thrilling mystery. About one third of my way through I was beginning to lose interest because I felt things just kept being repeated. But towards the end things came alive again and the pages turned much quicker and the less sleep I got. Highly recommend.
A brilliant story from a skilled writer - made my skin creep. Rob Kaufman illustrates clearly the twists, turns and cul-de-sacs of a damaged mind. The end made me cry.
