In Book 2, John has teamed up with a new writer to bring to life the stories of his missions to save mankind from its baser elements. Starting with a more in-depth description of the places and systems of the organization he came to run, John shares with us some of his most poignant mission stories, covering the entire span of his career, in which he and his team worked to stop or avenge horrific crimes, and to save countless lives. This is a unique peek into a life many of us have romanticized; something John cautions us all against in the end.
Using a pseudonym for safety reasons, Vietnam vet, John Murray, a.k.a. Papa, spent the majority of his adult life working as a covert operative sanctioned by the U.S., Canadian and various European governments. As John became a part, and then the head, of this organization in the 1970s, his life was a constant struggle between the demands of his job, and his continuous attempts at protecting some semblance of a home life for himself and the family he had started before the war. It was his, and his crew's, responsibility to 'take care' of much of the world's evil--evil that could never have come to the public's attention. Now retired, he is living in a small rural Western town. As 'normal' as he tries to live, he will always be haunted by the visions of what he saw and what he tried to prevent or rectify.
A Vietnam vet, John Murray, later known as "Papa," has spent the majority of his adult life working as an undercover agent for the U.S., Canadian and various European governments. During this time, he rose from agent to the head of US Operations.
John was raised in the South by his grandfather who taught him at an early age how to survive by hunting and fishing, which all served him well for his future. He firmly believes that if he had not had the guidance of his grandfather and others who influenced his life that he never would have survived the ordeals that he did.
John, who enjoyed a very average American childhood, always wanted to be a ‘normal’ husband and father, but you'll eventually understand why that was impossible.
Papa and his crews bore the responsibility of taking care of much of the world’s evil – evil that could never have come to the public’s attention.
Now retired, he and his wife are living in a small rural Western town. As ‘normal’ as he tries to live, he will always be haunted by the visions of what he saw and what he tried to prevent or rectify.
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of reading Book 1 in the Code Name: Papa series. So I was especially excited when I was offered a copy of Code Name: Papa Book 2 to review.
This one was more of an emotional take on the secretive, high-risk lifestyle that surrounded John and his team. There are new missions discussed, some of which particularly pulled at my heartstrings. Some of the missions from the first books are mentioned again, but this time in much more detail, which left me with a better sense of understanding and compassion.
I enjoyed getting to know what his family life was like during his life, and more about his team members. I felt like I got to know more of who the author is after reading through. I appreciated that Mr. Murray was careful not to glamorize such roles in this world, and to reiterate the importance of upholding the policies set out by the original founder, for everyone's protection.
The message shared at the end of the book, is one every person should read. I definitely feel like if you enjoy memoirs, this one will fascinate you. I look forward to reading the third and final instalment in the Code Name: Papa trilogy.

It won’t fit the business, personal finance, or religious categories, which means some of our followers won’t get to know about how wonderful Code Name: Papa Book 2: My Extraordinary Life While Hiding in Plain Sight by John Murray really is.
This is book two in the series. We have not read Book One, yet. We hope to.
This is a very different kind of spy thriller. The main reason is that it is all true. When one reads fiction, you pretty much know exactly what is going to happen. This is not so when you deal with cold, hard facts.
The stories are excellent and very entertaining. This is the kind of book that makes one walk into walls. You know, you don’t want to stop reading, but you really have to do other things, too. You don’t put the book down (until you have to) and then, smash, right into the wall. Maybe this book should come with a danger warning.
If you love a good spy vs spy book, Code Name: Papa: Book 2 can’t be beat. This will make a great gift for that military buff, history buff, or avid reader on your list. A serious word of warning: if you are claustrophobic, you will want to refrain from reading this book.

This is a must read, not only because it's an amazing book, but because of the author, John Murray's message towards the end of the book. We must be the change we want to see, because too much is happening not only in the U.S. but in other countries as we are seeing more and more evil.
"Code Name: Papa Book 2: My Extraordinary Life While Hiding in Plain Sight" is my introduction to John Murray. I definitely need to read the first book because I want to know if some of the questions I have from Book 2, have been answered there. I want to know if they ever found out the reasons behind Chapter 20 and 21 and also, what happened to Nancy. So it's a book that will have you wanting to read the first one, if your introduction, as mine was, is to Code Name: Papa Book 2.
Papa, what a great leader! A Serviceman! I was thrilled to read this book, I didn't put it down until I was finished, and I have since spoken about it to others. I hope there is a Code Name: Papa Book 3. What an extraordinary life, indeed.
