Do you speak with your true voice? When Penny Banks, amateur PI and witch-in-training, is asked to be on a talk show she gets a serious case of the butterflies. She hopes that the Voice Spell might help, but it calls for naked chanting under a full moon. Yikes! She’s not quite ready for that. As she tries to find a loophole in the spell, a body turns up in the creek that runs through town. Penny has to put her magical studies on pause while she gets busy investigating the crime. The Hillcrest Police Department isn’t happy to have Penny, her cat Turkey, and her witchy, knitting friends poking around the crime scene. This series is so much fun. I love the characters and how they grow from one book to the next. They are becoming more confident in themselves and I like that. Their familiars are quite an interesting bunch. I really want to learn more about Anna's familiar as it is the newest addition to the bunch. Turkey is still my favorite. I mean who wouldn't love a talking cat with his own business? LOL He has ambitions than most people that I know. I am curious as to where their studies will take them next.
This book was excellent. Wish there were more than 5 stars. Anyhow, I rate this book 5+ stars. It was that good. It was funny, entertaining, everyone can read it and unpredictable. It was witty and whimsical too. I love Amorette Anderson's books. I recommend this book as I do her other books.
This book is magical, fun, easy to read, Hard to put down and everyone can read it. The book is well written too. I loved this book and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would. I highly recommend it and loved trying to figure who done it.
This has been a lovely book to read. Penny and the coven keep growing as they continue their journey to their witch lessons. This is the book where the coven, and Penny, start to believe in themselves and in doing so, they are able to confront their fears. I could feel Penny as she grew as a witch and left behind her old fears in herself, in her relationship with Max and in what she was capable of doin like findind her witch voice gives her confidence to keep going on.
I usually don't read books that have supernatural tones but this was my year for cozies. As the witchy stories are so abundant in the cozy genre I knew I had to try them. I've very glad I did as I love this series! Penny is delightful and I love the interplay between her and her familiar, Turkey. I also love the other characters and how they embrace each other and their differences. We must all have some witchiness in us as all of these spells can apply to mere mortals. Not sure I've found my voice yet but I'm not giving up either. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Once again loved it from beginning to end! Being in Penny's world and watching her grow into a confident, smart young woman while still being quirky and fun is so enjoyable. Having each character developing also along the way is insightful. Each book becomes more captivating as Penny is also. Can't wait for the next spell!! I hope the series won't end when they get to the end of the their book!
This series just keeps getting better. Will Penny nail the new voice spell in time for a hot interlude with her vampire Max, and solve a murder mystery? Great read, ok as a stand alone but much more enjoyable if you have read the other books in the series first. I recieved an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Oh, my witch. Just when I thought this series couldn’t possibly get any better, because it already deserved 10 stars, this installment topped that! Out of this world! I can’t even find the superlatives anymore to describe it. Enough said, I think. Only problem was: it ended! I was trying to read slowly so I wouldn’t get to the end so fast, but that proved to be impossible.
Penny is on her way to becoming a very powerful witch, but she’s not flawless and I love that. She’s blunt at times, socially awkward, uncoordinated, not always willing to study. It makes her all the more real and endearing. And she IS funny, caring, determined, and a good friend. It’s so exciting to follow Penny on her path of change. It’s such a pleasure to see her grow. She does still need her fake glasses to make her feel smart. Or at least she THINKS she needs them. But she is going to have to realize that it comes from within her. She has to find her courage, her voice.
This new case is extra difficult, because Penny has been ordered by the police not to interfere in their investigation. Penny’s hands are now tied, but she wouldn’t be Penny if she wouldn’t try! She does what she can. So, there is a murder case, but there are also pesky goblins trying to enter the Earth Realm. They’re driving Penny and her Coven crazy!
Turkey is so cute. He’s doing crossword puzzles now too. He’s so accomplished! Turkey might even be a better PI than Penny is, although when it comes to action, he wishes he’d be a little braver. He’s so scared of Marley’s owl familiar! Turkey is slowly getting used to Max although he is still not a fan. And yes, I know he doesn’t like being called Turkey! He prefers Thomas, or even Your Highness, but he’ll always be Turkey Werky to Penny.
Yes it was a mystery. The murder of a bird spotting professor but it seemed to veer off a bit towards the the middle. Okay she has been ordered not to investigate but when has that ever stopped her. Plus the small coven now find the link on how to make the next spell work. When a visiting professor is found dead on the tour he was giving, she's sure that not only was he murdered but that she knows who the killer is. Unfortunately she has been warned off the case and there's also the problem they're having with the goblins. Nightly they try to sneak in and as she has the most shifts on covering the portal, she ends up groggy and miserable. Then there is the next spell. How to make it work? An underground investigation, a burner phone ad pride. Will she work out what they need to make the spell work and who, how and why the murder was committed?
This time the witches have to open themselves up to being vulnerable to learn the voice spell. This spell is one of the most challenging spells they have had to learn so far. Anna, Cora, Marley and Penni are not sure they want to go down that path, but if they want to become true witches then they need to go outside their comfort zone and let their guards down and be vulnerable and face their fears that are holding them hostage so their true voices can be heard.
While they are trying to figure this out they decide to go on a bird watching tour with an expert guide who will be in town.. while a group of people are gathered at the park waiting for the tour to begin, the experts wife is running down the path screaming for help, saying her husband is dead, that his head is stuck under water.. Penni and her coven of witches have another murder mystery to solve.
Another great story of this series, looking forward to their next spell to learn.
Max ask Penny to travel to the Fire realm with him and be on a talk show. She wants to go but what about the goblins waking them all up in the middle of the night? Plus the coven has to learn the voice spell. One they are not looking forward to.
As the coven go to a bird walk and the head man is murdered. Not to mention Chris tells Penny she has to stay out of this case as the police chief is not happy with her at all.
As she tries he best to stay out the more she is in. Turkey tries to help and is making his way in the world with his new business and Marley’s Owl still scares him.
Again there are laugh out loud moments and a bit of romance with Max. It is run to watch the coven pass all the spells as they go.
The characters are spot on as you want to know more about them as each book comes out. A great read.
A murder, a talk show in another realm, and goblins on top of completing a new spell. How will she manage it all?
As the girls work to complete the Voice Spell, they must solve the murder of a famous bird watcher who comes to town to speak. On top of this they are constantly being woken at night by goblins trying to enter the Earth Realm. Penny must deal with all this, plus facing a trip to the Fire Realm to be on a talk show with Max.
Here Penny and the coven ladies learn how to find their inner voices and conduct the Voice Spell - This happens all while trying to find who killed the famous bird watcher, even suspecting his wife; and being woken nights by pesky leprechauns trying to get into the earth realm. This was very cute, and while they are books that are true, they each have some form of lesson that, in a nice way, could be learned by everyone (not the magic of course). I am an ARC reader and received this for my honest review - I recommend the whole series.
Another fun story in the Hillcrest Witch series. Glad to see Penny starting to act like an adult. Love the characters, the goblins were a nice twist. Anne, Marley and Cora are wonderful. The pains and trials the 4 women go through and the interactions of their familiars are very entertaining. There is so much humor in this book that I cannot put it down. The knitting that the women do when they are together is a nice twist in the series. It makes it more realistic. I have purchased this book through kindle unlimited because I love the series.
So, this continues the same fabulous traits that we love in this series: a hilariously skatterbrained heroine, a fabulous stream of consciousness narrative, and brilliant characters. A bird watcher named Dr. Puffin... I mean, come on! But as lighthearted as most of the book is, there are some absolutely exquisite moments near the end that break your heart, when all seems lost and futile. And then, THAT ending. Loved every moment.
This series keeps getting better with each new book
This has been a delightful series to read. You can see the growth in the author from one story to the next. Add into that the growth of the characters, the coven, and the dynamics of each group in these quirky groups. The familiars are such an enjoyable part that have added so much to each book. A delightful read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries! Love Penny and Turkey the best! VICKI FROM WYOMING
Good book, as were all the others in this series. How appropriate that her coven's current spell in the Learning to be a Witch book is the Voice spell since she's been asked to give a speech. But this spell require chanting in the nude!!! She's not quite ready to get naked to do that, even if it is just with her own coven. In the meantime, a body shows up that requires her focus, even if the local cops would rather she keep her nose out of their business.
This was another great installment to the series! The mystery was interesting and it’s so fun to watch Penny and her friends progress through their witchy journey. The goblins were an interesting piece of the plot in this story. And I just love Max so much, no matter how big or small his role is in the story. He’s wonderful!

The ladies are growing into their new selves. After several months of studying witchcraft, the ladies have learned they cannot take shortcuts. It's wonderful to watch them grow and mature. To see them taking responsibility for the coming and going of off-world visitors is just heart-warming. I love this series! It's one of the best series of cozies I've ever read! Fantastic author!
This book was quite fun to read. Goblins, a visit to the Fire Realm and of course, a murder to solve. I will say that I found the ending a little abrupt and some loose ends weren't tied up. However, it was still an excellent and entertaining book. It was laugh out loud funny in spots.
I love these ladies, I wouldn't mind meeting Max either, it would be brilliant if we could all have a familiar to talk to, I want to be a witch and join their coven.
I have been enjoying this series so much. This one actually had me in tears towards the end with Penny doubting herself and about being a good PI or a witch but she pulled through. Thank you for another great book. Can’t wait to start the next book in this series.
With our characters at a critical point in their studies, they have a big decision to make. Will they continue to grow and change, or fall back on the comfortable? They’re realizing that change isn’t easy.
I loved this book so much and it excited me so if you liked the other books in the series, then you are going love this one and it is definitely a must read.
This had some seriously funny laugh out loud moments! I really enjoy reading about how Penny and her coven are growing with their powers. I love reading this series!
