About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

I always thought this book was a 'blokes' book. It was always men that I ever heard comment upon it. I think they like the friendship between the two men and the mysteries they solve.
I was pleasantly surprised the stories are addictively easy to read, you always want to finish the mystery before you can get on with anything else. Thing is you have to stop yourself reading the next one as even if you read the first few lines you are intrigued already and get hooked in!

Exellent all round, whats not to love? Where people says things such as 'By jove' and 'all we require Watson is a pistol and a toothbrush where we're going'

Good audiobook version of Sherlock Holmes short stories.

Supposedly, The Reigate Squire was one of Conan Doyle's favorite Sherlock Holmes mysteries, but I would say The Yellow Face is the most surprising of the four stories in this volume. It is considered one of Holmes's failures, but it is quite nice, especially considering when the stories were written. "The Yellow Face" made me say "WHOA! I wasn't expecting THAT!"....and neither was Holmes. I highly recommend.
