This is an entertaining page-turner that’s based in part on real events in 1989. The internationally renowned rubber-tapper, environmentalist and political activist Chico Mendes, who was killed in the Amazon in 1988, figures among real and fictional Brazilian political figures. Investigating his death and a riot in a prison in Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, is a local correspondent for a Brasília newspaper who goes by the initials AGV. He unearths scandals involving our lords spiritual and temporal, all while wrestling with AIDS in an era in which AIDS was pretty much a death sentence.
It distracts from the fast-moving plot to see a number of typos. Even the protagonist’s name is spelled three different ways! The book needed better proofreading. Still, if you find it in a sebo (a Brazilian used bookstore), as I did in 2019, I say buy it.
