In the world of JUGHEAD THE HUNGER, there are no vampires, having been wiped out in their great war with the werewolves. In the VAMPIRONICA universe, the opposite is the case, as it was the vampires who were the victors. So what happens when these two eternal enemies are brought together again? Whatever it is, it can’t be good for poor ol’ Jug and Vampironica, you can count on that much…
Even though I could read this comic as a whole in a published book edition, it’s much more fun, more authentic, for me to read them in issues as they come out. It’s not so much that I like the tension of waiting for the storyline to continue x amount of months down the line, but just the feeling of a thin, willowy copy feels worth it. Besides which, I like the cover art of all additions to Archie comics like this, so I’ll go for monthly subscriptions every time.
Going into this story, I already anticipated liking it. I never read any of Jughead: The Hunger, but I did read Vampironica #1 and love everything about Veronica Lodge in general in the Archie universe, so yeah, bring on the monster throw-down!
Anyway, the beginning of this story assumes that you've already read Vampironica, as it starts immediately where the previous story left off, in that Ronnie's destroyed all the vampires and now they're celebrating that.
But...are the vampires really gone.
Let's just say that this comic starts off by discrediting the ending to Vampironica and...yeah, I don't like the direction that it's taking so far, but there seems to be the introduction of some new lore, so I'm willing to see where it goes. On to Issue 2!
I have only read the first of each of these new series but enjoyed the introduction. They are doing something quite interesting in bringing the horror genre to some of the most wholesome kids in all of the comic book land. Jughead and Veronica have never been the best of friends, they just tolerated each other because of Archie. Now you get to have the ultimate grudge match between enemies of different species even.
In each of their respective worlds the other, meaning either vampires or werewolves do not exist because they were defeated in a war. But here you are throwing them together for the ultimate match. Who will come out on top? Considering they are going to be battling among their friends' things could get ugly. But not in this first episode because we have to establish what is going on.
This is a nice though sedate start to what I hope will be a battle royale.
