You’ll love Dead of Winter for its spine-tingling romance, gripping tension and small town characters.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Overall, it's a good book. Dead of Winter is well written and, in my opinion, its an easy read. Thrilling, full of suspense with a dash of romance are some of the reviews that I have come across. I feel like there could have been a better build up. The plot seemed a little anti-climactic to me. The best way I can explain it is, imagine opening a can of pepsi and expecting that first bite and fizz of caffeine but instead that first sip is flat. Do I recommend this book for you to read? Definitely. My opinion is only one of many. This could be your next fave so buy it, read it and enjoy.
I received a free copy through the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.
4 stars — I’m not a big reader of suspense, but when one of your favourite authors delves into the genre, you follow, you know? And I loved the suspense elements of this story, they hit it just right for me. And not just the suspense, the mystery was intriguing too. And even though I had figured out a few little points along the way, and had suspicions about others, I still enjoyed going on the ride and confirming those suspicions and finding out the surrounding details. It was a great set up for the rest of the series, b/c I can’t wait to find out more about the stories of the secondary characters, and if the mystery elements in this story will pervade in the rest of the series (I’m pretty sure it’s setting up in a certain way).
Now, as for the romance and characters in this story, I thought we got enough of those developments as well. I absolutely LOVED the flashbacks to the past between Blaine and Rosie. There weren’t a lot of them, but it really set up who they were and what they were to each other, and how those events might have shaped them (mostly Blaine).
Blaine was adorable. Like seriously adorable. I sometimes wondered how Blaine stayed as good as he was with everything he went through in the past. And I almost wished we’d learned a bit more about his past, particularly with his family…we got hints, but perhaps we’ll get more in Nate’s story?
I was worried about loving Rosie, b/c she makes some really bad choices (both in the past and the present). But she grew on me. I wish she’d learned to trust people more, so many things could have gone differently if she had. I sort of got why she didn’t, but there was always a part of me wanting to shake her. Ah well.
I will admit, the potential love triangle was a bit uncomfortable for me, and the almost cheating was anxiety inducing b/c it’s a button issue for me. But in general it was handled fairly well and resolved in a way that I was satisfied.
It’s actually been a bit since I read the story (this is what happens when I don’t write my reviews up right away), but all in all this was fun, entertaining, and I’m ready to see what happens for the rest of the characters we’ve been introduced to!
Rosie has returned to Aspen Falls broken and humiliated. Once a high school princess, she couldn't wait to escape her hometown. However, life hasn't turned out like she expected. One bad decision after another, one loser boyfriend after another. Her life has been a series of mistakes and now she's on the run from her drug-dealing ex and trying to make a fresh start. Blaine is now a respected police officer. He's grown into a handsome, well-liked man but in high school, he was bullied mercilessly. Unable to take any more, a simple act of kindness from a beautiful girl that he crushed on, changed everything for him. She saved him, now he wants to return the favor. Blaine wants to help Rosie but she knows if he really knew who she was, how low she had fallen, he would want nothing to do with her. When her past catches up with her will Blaine be able to save her, will he turn away or will he be the one to punish her?
Dead of Winter is a standalone romantic suspense. It's a small-town story with romance, tension, danger, twists and turns. Rosie and Blaine are such likable characters, so relatable. We've all known people just like them. Rosie wanted to be loved, taken care of. She didn't realize her own strength. Blaine had already found his strength, due in part to Rosie. Blaine was a solid man. We should all be so lucky to have a man like him in our life. Rosie was correct, she did the world a favor that one afternoon.Their reunion and friendship were beyond sweet and genuine. I appreciated every aspect, both the easy and the complicated, of the relationship between these two. I love that they had to work to get to know one another, trust one another. No insta-HEA. The side characters were essential. Louanne was a lovely grandmotherly figure. She was key to Rosie's self-recovery. Oliver, Nate, Damien, Matt, the cook and waitresses, and other police officers each added to the depth of the story and the town.
The mystery was compelling, It was well-thought out, current, and legitimate. It served as the perfect backdrop for the characters. This book drew me in from the first page and enthralled me until the final word. I look forward to more from the collaboration of Melissa Pearl and Anna Cruise.
I love when the characters live in a small town, though they don't particularly know everyone who lives there, there is just this warmth vibe that goes around and people are actually nicer, friendlier and would even do great lengths to take care of you and make sure you're okay. I don't know if that's just me though?
But...not only is Rosie forced to live in Aspen Falls based on a tragedy incident that happened in her life, she also meets again a boy who was in desperate need of her help in the past but this time, it's the other way around. It is true after all that if you help others with good intentions, you might get paid for the deed whether it's starkly clear or not.
Any guy with a good sense of morale know that abusing women that you claim you're so in love with, don't do it or even go near it. This act doesn't need to be taught at school or from home, it's a common sense just as much as it is like hitting random people you meet in the street. There are way too many influences and intoxicating ways to do such a disgusting stunt and it is a daunting world that we live in. That someone you love could sell you just to get a glimpse of another day.
Some of the books that I have read by Melissa Pearl hasn't always been this suspenseful and this story intrigues me too much that I look forward for the next book in this collaboration series by Melissa Pearl and Anna Cruise.
I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end. Full of twists, turns, suspense and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved Rosie. Her character was so very well written and so strong even when she didn't want to be. I wanted to throat punch her when she decides to do what she does but then was ok when she made it better. I enjoyed reading this book so very much. Melissa did a great job with this story line and the characters. There was amazing character chemistry in this book which made it even better to read. It will grip you from the beginning and have you on the edge of your seat until the end.
Read this book as part of a group read. It has both elements of suspense and romance. It kept my attention and I enjoyed the story enough. It was a solid down the middle of the road story. I will consider going through the rest of the story but not totally compelled.
This book is the kind of book I love. Small town suspense with so many twists an turns, it will keep you guessing until the end. Melissa Pearl blew me away with this book and I'm excited to read more!
what a great story. Rosie is on the run from her ex. She's hiding out from him. Will she be safe where she goes. Will he find her. what an amazing story
>Book Repair – Dead of Winter >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Aspen Falls series and ends in an HEA. Blaine is a cop who survived extreme bullying during high school with the help of a girl he had a crush on. Blaine is no longer small and skinny. He is now tall, fit and an empathetic cop. Rosie is the girl of Blaine’s dreams. She returns to her hometown to see a different Blaine. Rosie left town as the popular girl, but returned in disgrace, running from her abusive ex. >Blaine, his friend Lucas and half-brother Nate are all investigating some deadly illegal drugs floating around the college campus. Rosie’s ex has a part in all that is going on and Blaine has to decide if his high school crush is enough for him to completely change the direction of his life. >This book is appropriate for a young adult (18+) audience. There are a lot of drug references, but no explicit sex. I am giving this book 5 stars. The plot was exciting and the characters engaging. Blaine is the perfect book boyfriend.
The first installment of the Aspen Falls novels by authors Melissa Pearl and Anna Cruise, was absolutely wonderful! This novel had it all - action, suspense, mystery, and sweet romance. This writing duo has two more novels planned for Aspen Falls that are sure to be just as exciting and I can’t wait to read them.
Waking with the mother of all hangovers the last thing Rosie Sweet imagined was being served a search warrant by officers. Things for Rosie only went from bad to worse as events unfolded leading her to flee from her ex-boyfriend Damien. Rosie friends herself running to the only place left that she promised never to return to, her home town of Aspen Falls. It’s there that she finds herself pulled over by an officer who show her kindness and directs her to the one person in the town she always thought of as a grandmother. That officer turns out to be Blaine Hartford, he was once the class loner who was bullied but now is the town hottie. Blaine can’t believe his high school crush is back in town, but it’s obvious something is wrong and he can’t help but want to help Rosie if only she’d open up before it’s too late.
Overall, loved it! Small town life and romance meets big issues and regrets. I’m so happy for the ending it’s was just too precious especially after the big scene at the end that had me on pins and needles, Phew! that was a close one. Rosie was definitely the character I connected the most with, life can just suck when things aren’t what you expect and other people seem to have it all together. So when she returned to Aspen Falls and found not shame but home and a new start, it beautiful. Ugh and Blaine hot stuff right there, doing what he can to protect his town and woman. So if you love stories where the girl rises above her troubles and gets a great man and home in process, then this book will be a great read to start a series.
I've been on a mystery / suspense kick for the past month with some romance, but not a paranormal, and this fit the bill.
All Rosie wanted was to leave her hometown after graduation, but never expected she'd end up back there, and under the worst possible condition. Broke, on the run from her douche of an ex, with just the clothes on her back and no real plan. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when her past starts to catch up with her, she's not so sure it was the smartest move. Luckily for her, she has people who care about her and are willing to help her back on her feet. From the older neighbor who was more of a mother to her than her biological parent, to the bullied kid in high school that she helped when he was at his lowest.
Blaine doesn't know what brought her back, and if it is serendipity or not, but the one person he has secretly loved back in high school is now in his life again and maybe, just maybe, he can repay her for saving his life.
I really liked Blaine. He reminded me of a cop I had a run in with who was super nice. After having turned his life around, he became that person Rosie encouraged him to be. And although she made some bad choices, she was a good person at heart. A sweet romance develops between the two, without a cliffhanger at the end. At the end of the day, I got what I was searching for - a little romance, a bit of suspense, and not a vampire, shifter, or face in sight.
DEAD OF WINTER is book one in the Aspen Falls series. It's a CLEAN contemporary, thrilling romance. And although I'm a huge fan of Melissa Pearl and have read a lot of her work, Anna Cruise is a new to me author.
Rosie left behind Aspen Falls right after high school, including the boy who's life she saved, Blaine. She didn't think she'd ever go back but when she was forced to run from her ex-boyfriend, fate sends her to Aspen Falls. The first person she sees? The handsome officer who pulls her over for speeding and the boy she left behind...Blaine!
I gotta say first that poor Rosie was a mess!! She was so lost and lonely that she seemed to simply settle for whatever jack ass looked her way. I don't normally like my female MC to be...well, so BROKEN but the authors did an excellent job at making me feel connected to Rosie so that by the end, I was completely rooting for her. For once, we had a GOOD guy and not a bad boy alpha as the hero (at least for me, I tend to read a lot of bad boy books)! Blaine was so sweet and caring and noble and loyal, he gave me a tooth ache, LOL! He was the solid man that Rosie needed to lean on.
The plot has just the right amount of thrills and suspense to keep it interesting and moving at a fast pace. Melissa Pearl and Anna Cruise wrote seamlessly together! Overall, this was an awesome, clean, compassionate tale with the perfect amount of nail biting tension. Told from dual POVs with a happy ending. I received, read and voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I really wanted to LOVE this book but there were a few things that just burrowed under my skin that I couldn’t let go.
First off, it was a well written story. the author painted wonderful pictures in my mind. It was a an easy read that kept my attention and I found myself sneaking in little peeks whenever I had a moment to.
BUT here comes my issue. When it finally came time for Rose to spill it and tell Blaine everything and he found out the whole story and Blaine is there comforting her.... she’s talking about being attacked by her ex the night before and how she’s made all these terrible decisions. Then to top off that Blaine ended a very long relationship because he has feelings for Rose.... To have her assault him after she stole from a sweet old man.... For Blaine to stick his tongue down her throat before her tears have even fully stopped after telling the whole truth. That REALLY bugged me.
Plus Rose had been talking about getting herself in a good place before having a relationship. Blaine also said he didn’t want to just jump into something right after dumping Erin.... but they both contradicted themselves. Again REALLY bothered me.
Other then that the rest of the book flowed and made sense. Call me picky, but those two things really stick out. But still an enjoyable read.

What an amazing book! This is the first book in a new series by Melissa and man am I hooked. I am so ready for book two. This book was written so well and had such a wonderful flow. It was darn near impossible to put down and stop for dinner. This is Rosie's story and how she ended up back in her home town and running into an old friend. One she saved so many years ago. Blaine is now a cop and a really good one too. Rosie is running from her ex(who I wanted to kill for what he tried to do to her). This piece of you know what is still after her. When he finds her, she is at a loss as to what to do. And she does some really stupid things. Now it is Blaine’s turn to save her if he can. Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.

Dead Of Winter (Aspen Fall Book One) is the first standalone book in a series of romantic suspense novels. A small town close knit community, which is brimming with danger, murder, romance, & unexpected twists. A set of compelling character's in this perplexedly thriller will give you the thrill. The flashbacks intertwined throughout the tale along with the well detailed backstories of Rosie & Blaine will keep you captivated & gives you a glimpse of the character's drive as well as a better understanding of the characters motivations. The writing style is a creative unparalleled style that kept me engaged to the story. Looking forward to reading the next novel in this romantic suspense series.
I really enjoyed this romantic suspenseful novel. It was well written and engrossing. It kept me interested to the end. The story is about a hometown princess who returns to her hometown because she is running away from her ex. Blane is her former friend is now a part of the local police department. Drugs have come to town and Rosie and Blane try to find out who is pushing them. Action filled with a promise of romance which kept me interested to the end.
I really enjoyed this book and will read more of this series. I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author herself and I'm very grateful she did. Lol
This story begins with Rose having to deal with her boyfriend, who soon becomes ex, since he offers her in exchange for the payment of his debt. She flees and stops at Aspen Falls, the city where she grew up and vowed never to return. But when she’s pulled over by Officer Blaine Hartford, she comes face to face with her past. Blaine always had a crush on Rose in high school, but she never reciprocated his feelings, however, she saved Blaine's life at a turning point, and he does everything to help her when he realizes she's in trouble. Rose needs to face her problems head-on and decide what she really wants out of her life, but when trouble comes to Aspen Falls, will she have the courage to tell the truth, or can her past destroy everything she's been building? The twists in the story were very interesting, as were the various events and characters. I'm anxious for the next book in this series. I highly recommend the reading.
It was really good, i loved it even though there were some things that were not cool like how the hero had a girlfriend and still flirted and thought about the heroine all the time, and she flirted back even though she knew he had a gf . i am not good with all this The heroine was basically a coward with no courage at the beginning but she gradually started to develop and i liked seeing it, the hero was amazing , of course not looking at his tendencies of kissing other women while he had a gf, but this doesn't outweigh how sweet he is, and caring for the h, it gives him pluses . It was a good read and i enjoyed it, and i'm excited to read the second one.
I liked the mystery aspect in this story! I'm always a fan of a good mystery and Dead of Winter covers just that. I made predictions and wanted to keep reading to see if they were correct. It was hard to put down. My only disappointment is that I thought the hints/clues were pretty obtuse but that may be because I've read so many other mystery books and am pretty good on picking up on the clues. I loved the setting of this story. Aspen Falls sounds like such a close knit community. I can't wait to see where the next book in this series heads.
Rose Sweet has returned to her small home town of Aspen Falls, the place she couldn't wait to leave. Blaine Hartford is an Aspen Falls police officer and he had a crush on Rose all through high school. Rose is running from her ex boyfriend and the drug dealers he works for, when he tracks her down in Aspen Falls, Rose will turn to Blaine for help. Wow, fascinating, well written characters and an exciting, suspenseful plot. I think this is a fantastic, must read romantic suspense, I loved this book.
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
A little different from my all time favourite series of hers “A Songbird Series”, this book is more drama/suspense than I was used too, but I absolutely loved it.
Blaine was such a sweet character. And even though at times Rosie frustrated me, she was a very well written character.
Their chemistry was great and I loved the supporting characters and makes me want to read the rest of the series to see what their stories are.
Rosie ran as fast as she could from Aspen Falls but, when her boyfriend shows his true colors, she returns to the only place she can think of to escape. While speeding into town she gets pulled over by Blaine, a man she saved from suicide in high school. This small town HEA will take you through their time getting reacquainted and how Rosie must face her past. Becoming the once strong woman she was on the past.
Life never turns out how you think it will and for Rosie this has led to a lot of regrets. But there is time to fix the wrongs no matter what has to be done or what she has to give up. The popular girl in school she thought she was going somewhere. But a moment in the past where she reached out to save a life turns out to be the life that may just save hers
