When Daisy Jackson applied for the role of Rattlesnake Ridge’s new schoolmistress, she may have omitted a few important details, like her young age and lack of teaching experience. And it certainly doesn’t help that the town council holds her mixed-ethnicity against her, too.

Luke Rockford fell head over heels the very moment he laid eyes on Daisy, but he wasn’t the only one. His rival, Deputy Grant Watson also set his sights on the pretty teacher. The arrogant lawman is accustomed to getting what he wants, even if he has to bend the rules to claim it, from the job promised to Luke to any woman in town.

With so much to do before the school year begins, Daisy hardly knows which way to turn. Can she put down roots and fall in love before the town council runs her out of Rattlesnake Ridge?

If you like strong female characters, cheeky cowboys, and dastardly deputies then you’re sure to enjoy reading Coming from California. Get your copy to learn which man wins Daisy’s heart!

I've been writing since I was 5 years old. I've always had to set it aside and try to concentrate on so-called 'real life' though. I've always loved the works of Jane Austen, so perhaps it's fitting that my first published work should be a variation on the much beloved Pride And Prejudice.

I was on the fence about Coming from California, but then I turned the page and jumped right into the journey. Bilson's story may be set in the past, however the heroine can be dropped into any time period. Daisy is a woman that wants to make her own way, despite opposition at every turn. From sexism, racism, ageism, love is never on her radar. With two men vying for her heart and a town intent on pushing her out, Daisy is about to learn more about herself as a woman and person, than she ever thought possible.

Little schoolroom on the prairie...
This series reminds me of The Little House on the Prairie (the television series), of which I am a huge fan. It has a small town with colorful characters and fascinating adventures. What I admire and love the most about a series written by different authors, is the recurring characters and places. Especially when those (side) characters from a former book, get an important role in the next story! Like here.
I loved the first book and love this one just as much!

Daisy is a half Chinese, half Caucasian young woman from San Francisco who is taking a job as a school teacher in Nevada. Because of her biracial status, she had had a hard time finding a job in the city. She didn't disclose her racial status or her young age when she applied for the job, so she was fearful that they might send her packing back to California. While she runs across some with prejudice, she is soon approved to be the teacher by the town council. Just moments after she arrives in town, she looks out the window from her boarding house, and a handsome cowboy shouts up a compliment. Daisy is a little insulted to be spoken to in such a way, but she soon comes to realize how decent and honorable Luke really is.

The book is mostly about this lovely and very sweet romance between Daisy and Luke. To add interest, there is another man who is interested in her as well who is not as much of an upstanding character as Luke. There's also a mystery around who murdered an assayer in Reno. Luke also has his own story arc about what he may do as a profession and legacies given or left for him.

I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it, in part because I grew up in California and we often went to Nevada for vacations. I've been to Reno, Tahoe, and Virginia City, so it is fun to read a story that harkens back to the old days in those towns. I like how the author introduced a small recurring about prejudice. From what I understand, it was certainly a real issue for people who were Chinese or of Chinese descent back in the old west. While it wasn't a huge overarching theme, it did come up more than once, especially in the beginning and surprisingly at the end. To have this theme woven in in such a way is a gentle reminder for us to look at our own prejudice, the way we treat people whom we perceive as foreign, and the laws that those in power may adopt to codify misunderstanding and hatred. Now, just because I've gotten all heavy right here, don't think that the author played this with a heavy hand because she doesn't. It is actually well integrated and feels very contextual for the characters, the plot, and the times.

If you are a fan of Mark Twain, you will appreciate the author’s tip of the hat to him in the person of the town's newspaperman. I won't spoil it for you, but it did make me chuckle to see how the author added this little Easter egg.

The book did have a few strange little issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage, including one rather bizarrely punctuated and broken-up paragraph of dialogue that jarred me a little bit.

However, I enjoyed what is truly a sweet, gentle, slow-burn romance. The first parts of the book might feel too slow to you if you're used to fast-paced writing, but I enjoyed the characters so much that I didn't mind the slow pace or the slow burn. Since I have read the first book, I appreciated seeing some of the characters that I knew from the first book again. That's one of the beauties of a well-done series. I loved Miz May from the last book, and I learned a lot more about her here. They are definitely some new characters as well, and I enjoyed that there were actually two romances in this book that came to fruition. I have become quite enchanted with the good people of this town, so I am looking forward to the next installment of the series.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Miss Daisy Jackson was assisted into the cramped stagecoach heading for Rattlesnake Ridge where she would be the new school teacher. A rude middle-aged man was the only other passenger. She introduced herself, trying to be friendly, and said she would be the new teacher. But he asked if the mayor was aware she was Chinese, then pointedly ignored her!

When Daisy arrived in town, she was taken to Miz May’s Boarding House. May was also Chinese and the two women got along well. Her room was very accommodating, but she opened the window to let in some air. Cattle were being driven down the street heading to the railroad. Her breath caught when she saw a handsome, black-haired cowboy. He looked up at her and addressed her as ‘beautiful’, so she hastily moved away from the window to unpack her belongings, thinking about his smile.

Luke Rockford laughed at his best friend’s insinuation about chasing the woman. She didn’t seem like the type who would appreciate being chased. When they rode back to the bank to get paid, he saw her again and teased her, loving to watch how outraged she got at him. The teller in the bank would not give the two cowboys their money, saying Mr. Garrett had to authorize the amount and he was out until the next day. Deputy Grant Watson, who had stolen Luke’s deputy job when he went off to fight in the Union Army, came up to bully them, but Luke wouldn’t rise to his baiting. The deputy was Mr. Garrett’s nephew, so the promise to Luke that his job would be waiting was just a lie.

At supper in the boarding house, Daisy was introduced to Luke Rockford and Jack Hollis. She was told Luke was a Captain and a hero who had saved many lives. Jack was his Sergeant. The more she got to know Luke, the more she wanted to know about him.

Luke is fascinated by the beautiful, intelligent school teacher and he wants to get to know her better. If the gold nuggets he and Jack had found amount to anything, he just may be able to provide for a wife. But Deputy Grant Watson has also noticed the pretty teacher and he always gets what he wants. Which man will the lady choose? And how far will the men’s rivalry go?

This was such a wonderful story! The characters were very well presented so that the reader knew what kind of person each was, their values and morals, whether they were worthy of respect. The story line was strong and gave the reader good insight into the difficulties each had faced, again showing the strength of each character. This makes them come alive and seem more real to the reader, which gives us a very exciting story when both men want the same woman. The author expertly navigates the reader through the exciting story. You won’t want to miss this one!

Full disclosure, although I love period romances, I commonly avoid American frontier historical type stories. It's just not a period I'm particularly enamored of. I am, however, ENORMOUSLY enamored of this author, and frankly, will probably read anything she writes :D

So, with all that being said, this was a book that took a little warming up for me. As I've come to expect with this author, she builds beautiful worlds, and appealing characters. I will say, I had a really tough time warming up to the heroine. She was just lacking sympathetic characteristics for me, but I suspect that comes from not really getting the whole American frontier-y thing or something. She was also a bit choppy - one second judgy/defensive without clear cause, the next all sunshine. Towards the end a comment is made about her having a family again. That might've made a great core motivation theme for her, but I just didn't pick it up I guess.

The hero however, and to be honest most of the other characters, just fairly lept off the page. I even felt sympathetic for the "in serious need of guidance" deputy. The hero is super easy to like and admire. Oh to meet such a gentleman today. Totally in love with him haha ;D

Some decent red herrings to keep you guessing on the mystery side of things, but it doesn't distract from the core story. I can't say whether it represented the era well, but I can say on the whole I enjoyed it. 3 1/2 stars for me, and I still love this author :D.

Interesting side note - this book is part of a series in which each book is written by a different author! Unusual concept I thought, but there you go:).

A teacher for Rattlesnake Ridge
by Nanc

Daisy Jackson finally arrived in Rattlesnake Ridge with an expectation of a new life. Her dream to teach is finally coming to pass just as long as the town council who hired her doesn't have a problem with her youth or mixed heritage. Soon after arriving she was introduced to Luke Rockford who was a terrible tease.

Luke Rockford is a hardworking cowboy who lives on his stepfather's ranch. He's never met a woman he wants to marry until he set eyes on Daisy. The only problem is that the Deputy Sheriff Grant Watson also has set his sight on the pretty new teacher.

Daisy has her hands full as the two men try to capture her attention. Also setting up a new school and getting to know her students and the people in th town is keeping her busy.

This is book two in the series and it was nice seeing some of the people from the first book. There is a secondary story about the widow Barb and her twin children that we met in the first book.

I loved this author's style of writing. There was humor, mystery and of course romance. Rattlesnake Ridge has Cowboys and miners and a town just starting to come together after a bad mining accident years past. With so many single men and few women it will be interesting to see what's coming in the next books in this series.

"Wanted: A qualified Schoolteacher to establish and teach at a new school in Rattlesnake Ridge, Nevada, for Children of all ages." Well that was just what Daisy Jackson did. She became a little apprehensive as everyone seemed to comment on how young she was and they didn't know, but she had not mentioned her lack of teaching skills! But she was set up to room with Miz May, who was Chinese, and kept a respectable boarding house. You see, Daisy was Chinese American and some did not take well to that. Fortunately, the school board did approve her and she met Luke Rockford, a handsome cowboy. At supper at the boarding house, she found out that Luke had been a Captain in the war and touted a hero who had saved many in the war.

This was such a delightful story that was so well written. I felt like I was right there observing the characters as the story played out. Luke really was so sweet and wanted to get to know Daisy, but there was another on her trail, Deputy Grant Watson. He always got what he wanted and he had decided he wanted Daisy! There was a history between Luke and Grant. It kind of became a rivalry and I just knew she would choose Luke! He was such a swoon worthy hero!

This is the second book I have read from this author and I really enjoyed it so much! This tale had a little of it all. Mystery, humor, drama, a rivalry and of course a lovely romance. Cannot wait for more in this series!!

Coming from California
Sweet Promise Press

Luke and Jack have just came back from selling a herd of cattle.
Daisy has just arrived as a school teacher for Rattle Snake Ridge.

Daisy takes a room in the boardinghouse until the school and her new home is ready. She gets her first look at him from the window, and a little later she is unpacking gives her petty coat a flick out to shake the dust when Luke says what a nice show.

Barb has twins that will soon be able to start school. In the first novel you hear about her. She is a widow and sings in the saloon and also church. Jack wants to marry her but until he can provide for her and the twins he hasn’t asked yet.

The foursome became good friends through the time at the boardinghouse.

I enjoyed reading this book. It’s clean no adult content.
I do look forward to reading more about Rattle Snake Ridge.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

A clean and sweet Western romance, this story also has a bit of a mystery to be solved and an unwanted suitor. In an era when opportunity was the order of the day, it was also a time for opportunists to take advantage of unsuspecting, good-hearted people. Daisy didn't expect to be welcomed so warmly by the people of Rattlesnake Ridge and apart from one unfortunate encounter, she was quickly absorbed into the daily life of the small town as the school teacher. With delightful pupils and equally delightful parents, she quickly makes her mark, both on the community and in Luke Rockford's heart. Luke was surprised when he found his heart engaged and even his mother couldn't get over the fact that he had finally found someone to pin his future hopes on. Unfortunately, he isn't the only contender for the pretty school teacher's hand and has his work cut out both protecting her and winning her heart. The story comes to a happy conclusion and can be read by most age groups. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Lovely Story!
A young lady is hired as a teacher and arrives to take up her position but the schoolhouse is not yet built and she has to wait until it is completed before she can begin to teach.
She is beautiful and as a result attracts attention of the male population, but overall, she is popular and made welcome by the majority of people there.
And she make many friends.
The story takes off from there and she finds that one young man who is giving her a lot of attention is someone that she would like to know better, but there is a bit of rivalry for her attentions.......
This is such a nice and well written story that I loved it for its sweetness, honesty and wit and I would happily recommend it.

What a beautiful coming of age story that we have with Daisy especially because we all have fished on a few key details when it comes to getting a new job that we need. what luck Daisy gets the job but she also gets to two suitors so now she has a choice to make when it comes to the guys but what will she do if the town counsel fires her from being the schoolteacher and kicks her out of town. What would we do if we traveled all the way to a new town and had to worry about being kicked out with nowhere to go strap your boots on and show them why they hired you just like Daisy did. Wonderful story and I want more please.

Daisy was brave traveling from CA sight unseen to be a school teacher in Rattlesnake Ridge, Nevada knowing that the mayor that hired her could dismiss her immediately when he realizes she is part Asian. Luke came off as a troublemaker in the beginning teasing her when he first saw her, but later he was a gentleman and protective of her. I didn’t like Deputy Watson in the last book and he continued to be disreputable by pushing his attentions on Daisy. Luke and his friend Jack found the potential for a silver strike, but there are too many people they can’t trust with it in town. They travel to Reno find someone who can assess it and it end up turning into a mystery murder investigation. There was plenty of drama, humor, and romance in this story.

Daisy is a young teacher from California. She aplied for a post in Rattlesnake Ridge, a mining town near the border. She didn't mention her young age, her lack of experience and her Chinese roots. When in town, she had to confront many prejudices but, in the end, she conquered the town people. As in a good romantic novel, Daisy has two suitors to choose: Luke, the charming cowboy, and Deputy Grant. ...
This is a beautiful story. The beginning is a bit slow, but soon the mistery and the romance draws the attention of the reader.. The book can be read as an stand alone, but I'm looking for the next book in this serie.

Not only a sweet romance but also very appropriate for the atmosphere today because it faces the topic of racial prejudice. Daisy Jackson has arrived in Rattlesnake Ridge to be their school teacher. Sounds straight forward, right? There are a few issues, she is young, she is beautiful and mainly Daisy’s mother was Chinese. Although her father was a physician, she has grown up in the gold fields of California and faced prejudice and leering men all her life. Her first sighting with Luke Rockford is, as they say, one to tell the grandchildren. Prejudice isn’t the only problem the young couple face. Catherine Bilson has written a story with romance, humor, danger, treachery and lasting friendship. This was a very enjoyable book.

It was good to return to Rattlesnake Ridge. Unfortunately, Daisy’s first introduction to the people of the town left a lot to be desired. Her companion on the stage from Reno was less that welcoming because of her being of mixed ancestry, white father and Chinese mother. She soon learns that most of the people are simply glad to have a school teacher. Her introduction to Luke sets the stage for their courtship and probably the rest of their life, he catches her shaking her dusty petticoat out the window of the boarding house. This book has a few twists, surprises, humor and romance. It is an enjoyable story.

The second book in the Rattlesnake Ridge series is a good romance and takes on the issue of racism. Daisy is new to town and hopes to be the schoolteacher in the almost finished schoolhouse. Her only concern is how the council and the townsfolk will react to her being half Chinese.

There is a secondary storyline involving mystery and murder in the mining business, but that wrapped up a little too quickly and without enough mystery in my opinion.

Overall very likable new characters and the return of some good folks from the first book. I received a free advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review. I recommend this very sweet old west romance.

Coming From California by Catherine Bilson is a sweet pioneer story with conflict and intrigue. Daisy Jackson arrives by stagecoach to Rattlesnake Ridge as the school teacher but she leaves things off her application that she is biracial. (Chinese/Caucasian)
Luke Rockford a cowboy and war hero works for his stepfather ranch but he has the prospecting spirt of his father and comes to town herding cattle and notices Daisy at her window. Coming to California is a throughly entertaining book with intrigue and romance and I really enjoyed reading it. I received this book as an arc for an honest review of it.

The second in the Rattlesnake Ridge series, this book follows Miss Daisy, the new schoolteacher, and Luke, apparently a jobbing cowboy, but really a Civil War hero and a gentleman. The bones of the story are good, and it’s fabulous to see the back of – no wait, that would be a spoiler … Put it this way, anyone that’s read the first book will be pleased to see the departure of a much disliked character. I just found the story hugely slow; a tough editor would have elevated it to a more enjoyable read. It’s definitely not on my read-again pile.

lovely western story

This was a sweet love story. I found the subject matter of a bi-racial heroine in a post Civil War mining town in the Sierra Nevadas very interesting. Most Chinese immigrants were treated terribly, so the prejudices of the townspeople were not unexpected. Daisy is a wonderful character. She is kind and smart and the whole story is just very "sweet'. I know. But it is. Luke is also very likable and although the pacing is a bit slow in some parts, I really enjoyed the book.

A beautifully written story of a time when single young women are frowned upon when they travel alone to start a new life, new job and learning that biracial isnt always looked upon as good. Daisy is a young lady who doesnt let life hold her back from achieving what she wants and how she gets those things. Becoming a new teacher at a new school and having two men who want to win her heart isnt as easy as she wanted it to be but she doesnt let obstacles keep her from finding happiness. Cant wait to read the rest of the series books and enjoy what life has in store.

Coming from California is a clean Western romance with an interesting premise.
It was a tad unbelievable that Daisy was able to do as much as she did as a person of mixed race in that time period. However, the characters were nice and there was an interesting flow.
I think the book could be edited down a bit to make the story flow a little faster.
There were a few errors but nothing that took away from the enjoyment of the book.

All in all, a nice novel.

It was nice and clean, which is perfectly fine, but things moved fast and were tied up pretty quickly, almost too neatly as well. It felt like there was just about to be trouble and then it was over as soon as it began. Additionally, when the summary said the book had strong female characters, I expected a bit more from them but I guess they are because of the time period. There is a lot more telling than showing as well--not too descriptive so I don't think I connected with the town or the people, or where it was exactly. Overall, it was okay.

I thoroughly enjoyed Daisy and Luke's story! A mixed-race young woman comes to the small town to be a teacher in Nevada and she isn't sure how she'll be received. She's been shunned before because of her mixed-race. However, she finds acceptance in Rattlesnake Ridge and she finds love with Luke, the shameless flirt, who is also a Civil War hero and a gentleman! The secondary characters are engaging and fun, including twins are the children of her friend, Barb. An enjoyable story start to finish.

Daisy wants to teach school so she applies by mail and gets accepted at Rattlesnake Ridge. She has no experience and is a little too young but she is excited about her new job as soon as the school house is completed. Luke notices the pretty new school teacher and wants to get to know her more but Deputy Grant has also taken notice of Daisy. Which man will win her hand?

Great read.

I loved this for the most part. Except a couple times the main character would look back and recite dialogue from a conversation that could have easily just been placed when the conversation was happening. It had all the same characters except the new ones which i love but just a mention of the first girl no actual meeting and if this is such a small town how come they never run into each other.
