In the Shadows

Rate this book
Take a chance.

Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin doesn’t trust easily, and he most certainly doesn’t trust spies. He’ll work with them if ordered to, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. Except Agent Sean Delaney is proving to be the exception to the rule. There’s something about Sean that gets under Alexei’s skin and won’t let go. Alexei would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in what lay beneath the agent’s mask. When they’re assigned together for a mission, Alexei vows to keep Sean safe all while trying to coax the hot agent into his bed.

Hold onto hope.

Agent Sean Delaney has spent his entire adult life living a lie for his country. When the MDF tasks him with finding evidence of criminal wrong-doing against the owner of a private military company, Sean knows exactly how to play the game to get what he wants. He just doesn’t know how to handle Alexei’s advances, nor his own attraction to the younger soldier. Being a spy is lonely work, and Sean knows he should keep his distance, but saying no to Alexei is impossible from the moment they first kiss.

In a world of lies, the truth can be deadly.

When the mission takes a turn for the worse, the only thing left to do is run. In the wake of betrayal, and in the path of danger, can their fragile trust survive the battle?

In the Shadows is a 104k word steamy gay sci-fi military romance with a HFN ending that skirts HEA. There is military violence within the story that may not be suitable for everyone, as well as explicit intimate scenes not suitable for readers under the age of 18. This is a direct sequel to In the Ruins and reading the previous books in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

Alexei was the sort of man who liked to feel a connection beyond the physical with the men and women he partnered up with. Lust was all well and good, but Alexei always ended up wanting more, knowing that he couldn’t risk it. It used to be because of his position with Strike Force, then keeping the fact he was a metahuman a secret. Now it was his role as an MDF field operative that was the obstacle.

description

I love, love Alexei, and i am so happy we got his book. There is something about Russian guys in books that just pull me in, Vadim, Nikolai, Mischa and Alexei. Oh even Sergei in Enemies of the State had me all Giddy. Hmmm! maybe it is a fetish.

This series is just amazing the action part is top notch, edge of the seat kind of scenes. This book picks up from where the last one left. With Sean going undercover, and Alexei joining him, let's just say that doesn't go well.

I really liked Sean a lot, He fit with the team perfectly. I am so glad the team did not give him a hard time. He make it so easy to like him.I love the fact that he was somehow shy, a little insecure and had little experience when it came to sex and relationships that made it more enjoyable.

“Think they’d want to meet me?” Sean asked.
“Of course. You’re mine. Would share family with you always.”
Sean took a bite of his sandwich to hide his smile, but the feeling of being wanted stayed with him through lunch and cleaning the dishes and Alexei’s wandering hands.
He never did make it back to base that day.

Alexei, damn! i love this guy, i know i have said that before. It was love at first sight, i have loved him since book 1. Here we get to see his romantic and Kinky side. The way he treats Sean, i am so jealous, Pfft! lucky guy. These two have chemistry, it oozes from the beginning and the intimate times between them are so hot and tender.

Alexei reached for Sean’s hand beneath the table, linking their fingers together. Sean squeezed his hand tightly for a long moment before relaxing his grip.

description

Now the Sex was Hot as usual. I have to say in this book, the scenes were not drawn out as in book 1 and 2, i was a little disappointed, i wanted the 30 page scenes like the one we had in Jamie and Kyle's book. The chemistry made the sex scenes even hotter and Alexei is one dirty talker kinky guy. And he likes to watch.

“Want to watch,” Alexei said as he stroked a hand up and down Sean’s left thigh.
“You always want to watch,” Sean muttered, a faint hint of red staining his cheeks.
Sean’s eyes were more black than brown, the naked desire in them going straight to Alexei’s cock. “Pozhaluysta, Lyosha. Pozhaluysta fuck me.”
The mangled Russian was terrible, but Alexei was done playing around as he sat up, hauling Sean closer.
“Give it to you good,” Alexei promised, voice coming out in a deep rumble.
“Yes,” Sean agreed, nodding frantically. “Da. Whatever. Just fuck me!”
Alexei pulled the dildo out of him and tossed it aside, not caring where it landed. Slicking up his own cock, Alexei hooked a hand beneath Sean’s knee and pushed his leg up and out to give himself more room. He guided his cock to that slick hole, taking a moment to rub the head against it in a teasing manner.

description

It was nice to catch up with the rest of the team The Heroines are so bad-ass and well written that i want to Join the MDF and be one of them. The banter was so good as usual.

“Fine, is fine. Will be nice,” he grumbled.
“One hundred dollars says you insult someone within the first twenty-four hours,” Madison said.
“Twelve hours, same amount,” Annabelle swiftly replied.
“Only twelve?” Trevor asked with a chuckle. “I give him through dinner and I’ll double your amount.”
“Do you guys bet on everything?” Sean sighed.
“We’re Marines,” Madison said cheerfully. “Of course we fucking do.”

It was one enjoyable read. Now this series is full of action scenes than romance, so if you love Sci-fi superheroes action story then go for it. If not then you may get bored. The relationship and character development is pretty much non-existent but did i care, ummm! Nope.

That scene with Alexei getting out of the pool will probably play out in my mind for a long time.

I have been very eagerly waiting to get my hands on this book !! I fell in love with Alexei in book 1 and so when I found out he was getting his own story, I was over the moon happy ;)

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor so excited bumblebee + gif

Let me start out by saying that these books can not be read as stand-alones. This is a series with a continuing storyline so you need to start with book 1. No worries though, because book 1 and 2 are just as awesome !

tumblr_n09zpjNzAv1s89mq8o3_250.gif (245×196)

This book, just like the others, takes place in the future and I won't go into all the world-building in this review... I have done so in my review of book 1, In the Wreckage and since you will have to start with that one anyways...I will just leave you with my definition of "Metahumans".

"Metahumans are humans, that have been exposed to Splice, a certain chemical that is supposed to kill everyone who comes in contact with it. Somehow, certain people are able to survive this chemical, instead of getting killed, they turn into a some sort of super human with super powers."

crop output image

Both Alexei and Sean are Metahumans, working for the Metahuman Defense Force. They are not part of the same team normally, but Sean has been pulled into team Alpha for a certain mission.

Now I can honestly say that Alexei was every bit of the HOT (literally) badass I expected him to be ;)

bcd719e3c95d832c2cc0bd0ee21ecfdd.gif (300×172)

Sean however was a bit of a surprise to me. He was introduced in the last book and I didn't really know that much about him. I knew he had the power to phase...which means he can turn intangible and walk through walls and.... well pretty much anything. Turns out that there is much more to this amazing man than I expected and he really gave Alexei a run for his money.

Gerelateerde afbeelding         3832714-danny_intangibility_training.gif (216×157)

These two didn't really get off on the right foot in book 2. That is to say, Alexei didn't much care for Sean being part of their team. His past has made it hard for him to trust, but especially hard to trust spies....and Sean is a former CIA spy.

As he starts to get to know Sean better, his opinion of the man changes, going from distrust to appreciation and attraction....

10649278.gif (483×171)

When they are send on a mission together, Alexei pulls out all stops to get what he wants...and what he wants is Sean :P Now to say that these two were HOT together, would be an understatement...

" Want to fuck you like this. Best to see my cock in you"

tumblr_m4yf5hGztz1qiqy8mo1_500.gif (500×430)

I knew Alexei was a hot and sexy badass, but I didn't know how sweet he could also be.... He was also a pretty funny guy. I was especially fond of his ways to teach Sean Russian :P

"Show me, get word right, I fuck you. Get word wrong, you wait."

There was also plenty of action in this book...and I dont just mean the sexy kind... to keep me happy.

QOTS - 108 Live_13.gif (622×350)

We get to catch up with the whole team, who are starting to feel like family to me. I won't go into the whole plot, because I don't want to spoiler things too much.

I know there will be more to come and I hope we will get to see a lot more of these two in the next book.

My favorite of the series so far!

Who woulda thunk that Alexei would impress me so much with his bad assery along with his gentle caring side that didn’t take no for an answer and was all growly possessive? He definitely pulled out all the stops in wooing Sean in his own gruff bossy way, and I was easily won over. This was a fast, fun, intense, sexy ride all set in a post-apocalyptic alternate future where the terrorism has now moved onto home soil.

The long game is smartly complex and extremely high stakes. Seriously, I’m beginning to realize that nobody does action suspense like Turner, and she’s not too shabby when it comes to writing about the bedroom either. *wink*

Yes! The Metahuman Alpha Team is back! And they are on fire! (Literally)

This is pure entertainment. A fast paced story, full of action, wonderful dialogues and a hot couple driving the plot.
Probably "fast paced" is not the expression to describe In the Shadows . We could say the frantic tempo (and the visual way Hailey Turner writes) gives the reader the impression of being watching a movie. A sci-fi film performed by hot superheroes with a great sense of humor.

I guess the book could be summarized like that but you know me, I'm not the summarizing type, I like to ramble till you are bordering desperation or trying to kill yourselves. So, here I go.

This story takes place six months after what happened in 'In the Ruins' and even if I'm not giving up anything about the plot, I'll just said that this time our MCs are the ones who has to feign to be a couple, in order to fit in the mission they are up to. From there, as you can guess, everything goes south. Interesting enough?

On one hand we have 31 years old, CIA agent (former rock star) Sean Delaney (the full name feels like sugar on my mouth) and he is the male version of X men's Kitty Pryde. His superpower? Phasing! How cool is that! To be able to go through solid objects!

Sean is an honest man leaving among lies and the way he´s living has left him, not exactly cynic, but he seems tired out of the spy life and the lack of bonds it entails. He is a very likable character that has been a total surprise to me. I approved him as Alexei´s other half and I applause his superpower since it was so fun to read.

And then we have Staff Agent Alexei Dvorkin. Our Russian man on fire.
He is stubborn, loyal, hot (yes, it's important) and inside all his fire (literally and figuratively) there's a lot of sweetness. Alexei has a very distinctive voice since he talks as a Russian guy with no domain of the English language. I think this point adds credibility to the character, not leting the reader forget who is talking.

My first 3 stars goes to the plot execution. As I said, this is like a sci-fi movie script, but  in the form of a perfectly written book. The story is good, entertaining and developed in a brilliant way.

This book earned its fourth star because of the characters (all of them but specially our MCs, of course) and the sharp and funny dialogues among them.
I've said many times that the humor is not an easy thing. You have it, or you don't. As simple as it sounds and fortunately for all of us, Hailey Turner has the touch. She is funny, therefore her characters are too.

My shiny half star, as the cherry on top goes to the girls. They are kickass heroines. They are also smart, funny and refreshing.

My only niggle was the long sex scenes... weird, right? Well, I never claimed to be perfectly normal and since I know the sex in this series is one of the favorite things of some of my friends, I have no doubt that is just me.

Books like "In the Shadows" are a bad influence to me and that's because this girl is a dreamer, a mere reader who usually go all obsessed with characters and futuristic worlds like the one described here. So all I wanted, was to be a kickass gorgeous heroine, surrounded by hot alpha superhéroes...

Well, reality always finds its way to break in your fantasies and, this time, specially hard with the attack in Barcelona. Shitty people, shitty world... so these metahumans give me some fun while I was mad at the human race and their evil ways.

Thank you Hailey Turner to make me disconnect of this world full of wickedness.

Note to readers: This third installment of the Metahuman Files is not a standalone and to fully understand what's happening you need to read the previous books. Don't worry because they are good and if you're a sci-fi fan, this series will be a hit for you.

Move aside, Jamie and Kyle, because Sean and Alexei are in the spotlight now, and I damn-well liked what they did with it better than you!

In this third installment of Turner’s totally badass and precision-crafted sci-fi/military romance series, the stakes continually grow as the members of the Metahuman Alpha Team are thrown into new dangerous undercover work, as they continue to fight for peace and safety against terrorist plots both foreign and domestic.

Changing it up from the norm, this addition focuses on Russian-born fire-starter, Alexei, and his developing romantic relationship with long-time spy, Sean, who’s metahuman abilities to become transparent officially takes the cake as the coolest of the super-abilities we’ve witnessed throughout the series (so far).

Going undercover together definitely shifts their dynamic for the better, and before long, playing fake-lovers turns into the real thing, as Sean and Alexei face threat after threat, the danger of which begins to seep from their jobs into their private lives and the lives of their loved ones.

This was action-packed to the gills and I enjoyed every minute of the in-the-field, on-mission moments, but what I enjoyed even more than that (this time around) were the private moments shared between these two drastically different men, who came together explosively and left the most ardent of marks on one another’s hearts with every passing interaction. Alexei and Sean were scorching hot, no doubt, but there was a tenderness and a passion between these two that I much preferred to the always kinky, always pushing the limits, dynamic between Jamie and Kyle. Yep, Alexei and Sean definitely win in terms of favourite couple points, that’s for sure.

In truth, I’m taking my sweet-ass time reading through this series, but I think that’s working in my favour, allowing me to savour the action and the romances all the better. I look forward to seeing what happens next with the team in In the Blood.

4.5 Stars!

I really love this series. I was super excited to get Alexei's book, but at the same time I wanted more of Kyle and Jamie. :)

Positives:
--great characters (main and secondary). I love the whole MDF team.
--plenty of action (suspense wise and between the sheets) - though I will say there was less steam (but still plenty) in this one, I thought, than the other books in the series.
--good build-up and chemistry between the MCs. Some good banter too.

Not Quite Positives:
--maybe a little slower paced the first-half. However, I read this one pretty quick and was never bored. I just wasn't *quite* as enthralled as I remember being in the other two books.

Overall, this was a great addition to the series and I can't wait to see what (and who) is next!

What happens when two stubborn hotheads collide?
Cool fire effect, looks like fire bender stuff. #avatar

Sparks will fly...

Okay, in Sean's and Alexei's case it is more like a blaze, but I did not expect anything less after they encountered each other in the last book and I could not get my grabby hands fast enough on their story.

Months have passed since ex-CIA Agent Sean Delaney -now working for the intelligence division of the Metahuman Defense Force- was assigned to Alpha Team for a mission and although this was a one-off so far, he and Alexei Dvorkin of all people formed a tentative friendship based on mutual respect and trust.

Everything beyond a friendship would be a bad idea, right? A very bad idea. For a variety of reasons. Well, that is was both men persuaded themselves, since for one, Alexei doesn't do spies due to his past and Sean, on the other hand, is a shadow. A man who can slip into any role, pretending to be someone he wasn't, and this dangerous life leads him to stay on his own, to cut off most of his ties and rather be lonely than risk the life of someone he is close to. When a new lead on their case sends both men together on a undercover mission that not only requires all of their superpowers to catch the bad guys and sends Alexei's protective streak towards Sean into overdrive...
Alexei liked the way Sean never seemed to back down from a problem. His stubbornness toward completing the mission was admirable, but Alexei really wished Sean would learn to duck. He had a feeling he shouldn't let Sean out of his sight...

second son smoke powers gif - Google Search

... but that also demands of them to act like they are more than just friends and business partners, both Sean and Alexei realize that there is more to it than just their stubbornness that lets the sparks fly. Both guys are good at playing roles, so they are prone not to show their feelings, but one closer look can be a real eye-opener, even if it is hard to admit.
His mantle of spy was an immediate turnoff for Alexei in that regard, something Sean had known from the first mission they'd worked together. But they had a role to play here, one that came with expectations of reactions.
It's okay to look, he thought to himself.
Because nothing would come out of it, even if the sight of Alexei right now had just catapulted him into the starring role of Sean's late-night fantasies.

The most important thing, though, is to stay alive in order to see if there is a chance for love for both of them...

Boy, this series is so right up my alley, it should warrant its own road signs... The worldbuilding once again was out of this world. The detailed description of scenery, equipment and events was so vivid, I could not only see everything right in my mind's eye, but had a feeling I would be there, right admidst everything that happened. The action is hellishly thrilling, especially towards the end and during a car chase that had me breathless and grinding my teeth with tension.

It was great to see the whole team in action again, their team dynamic is absolutely unique, from Jamie the teamleader right down to each and every badass heroine and I love every single one of them. Not to say that Alexei managed to crack me up again with his dry comments in his broken English.

And Sean and Alexei? Holy hotness! Okay, umm, hot does not even describe them in the slightest, scorchin' might get a little bit closer. Alexei likes to mark his territory and... to watch. Lord, I would have loved to be the fly on the wall, or should I say on the ceiling mirror? ;-)

But what I loved the most was the fact that even right in the middle of action and drama, there was always time for some tender moments.
Prince whatever 👑👬💎

Lies were a lonely way to live, and Alexei was ferociously glad there was nothing between them tonight but the truth.

In The Shadows ends on a HFN for Sean and Alexei and with at least two more books to come in this series I cannot wait to see where Hailey leads us with this story, especially since the case is only partially wrapped up and the bad guys are still on the loose. I'm also dying to see more of Jamie and Kyle again in the next books.

Highly recommended!

I have to get this off my chest. WHEN ARE THEY GONNA GET THE BADDIES?!?!?!??!?!

Well, I feel better now.

I tip my hat to you, Hailey Turner.

You're playing the long game with these elusive baddies. I'll play along for two reasons: (a) I like these people and (b) this series is full of action-packed goodness.

In the Shadows is focused on Alexei and former CIA agent Sean. They had some *eyeballs* happening in the prior book and here is where Alexei makes his move.

Alexei is hot in more than one sense of the word. He's a pyrokinetic and Russian and possessive: A Trifecta! He's also kinda grumpy and oozes confidence, so I am officially #TeamAlexei at this point.

Sean is slightly older and very focused on his job which has been detrimental to his love life. I like that Turner flipped the script making the older character the less experienced of the two. Sean's sweetly bashful and self-conscious. But he cannot deny the powerful attraction simmering between he and Alexei when they get paired up on a mission as "fake" boyfriends. We all know how that goes.

I wouldn't say they have more chemistry than Jaime and Kyle but how much Sean turns Alexei's crank and how verbal he is about that did it for me. That second sex scene when he had Sean sit on his face also did it for me. Muchly.

Another thing I really like is this team. This is actually one of those series that I wish would spin into MF or MMF or something because Katie, Madison and Annabelle are badasses. Turner writes women well. All of them are strong, smart, funny and levelheaded in a pickle, so when Kyle and Alexei's former commander showed up to assist in one of the missions and started making googoo eyes at Katie I got a little sad knowing I'd never get to read their story.

Alright. End of the pity party of one.

There is much action, adventure, they all have cool ass powers and many things get blown the fuck up, so if you are a fan of your romance being action packed this book and this series are for you! Much more spycraft is present in this one which made the plot complex but not convoluted. I suspect things are going to get even dicier as the series progresses.

So you win, Hailey Turner. I'm in for book 4. I sure hope some baddies are gotten in that one.

dnf @ 54%.

this series had the potential to become a fav, but the lack of some good romance really ruined it for me. i desperately needed more relationship development... and not just in this book, but in books 1 and 2 too tbh.

i also didn't really feel any chemistry between the mcs here. the way their whole relationship got set up in the previous book made me think they were gonna have this amazing enemies to lovers storyline, but instead i got absolutely robbed.

So, I'm not going to lie. At 30% I was wondering where the Alexei and Sean were that everyone was telling me about. I just didn't feel any chemistry between them. I even told Anne, that I felt like Alexei could take or leave Sean. BUT, BUT, BUT, then just a few pages later, it happened. There they are! OMG I'm in love with these two. I missed the tenderness with Jamie and Kyle in their first book. Don't get me wrong, they were hot AF and I love two strong men like that going at it. But I also love slow, sweet and tender and I got that with Alexei and Sean. Both needed the other. I loved how Alexei treated Sean with care and made him work for it sometimes ;) And while there's no ILY's here, you just know it. You can tell in their actions.

Of course, there were plenty of explosions and bullets in this one too. It's a nice blend. I'm definitely moving on with the series even though, based on reviews, the next one scares me to death! I hope my stomach can hold up as well as my nerves.

WHOA : saying I had a BLAST reading this one is the understatement of the year.
My rating reflects the enjoyment I had reading a book, either because it was emotional, or I was totally immersed in the story or because I had a lot of fun reading it. This one falls in the latest category. Why ?

First, not too many expectations, so no disappointment. I’ve read the first 2 books of the series and they were OK for me, but not more. I kept reading this series for the entertaining futuristic world full of Metahumans built by the author, for side characters of the Alpha-team (especially the kickass heroines) and the team dynamic.
Contrary to many of my GR friends, the MCs of book 3 didn’t give me any giddy vibes in book2 (Jamie and Kyle were the MCs in that one and stole my whole attention).
So, color me surprised when I got so excited by Alexei and Sean.

Second, I did a BR with Josy, my usual partner in crime, and Simone, a very welcome company. And I can say it was the best BR I had : we may have been a bit overboard, like 3 kids in a candy store. A special thank for them (and for the visuals…**cough**)

And finally, all the niggles I had in the previous books were gone : poufff !!!
No insta-lust : I loved that Alexei and Sean spent some time learning to know each other a bit between book2 and book3 and then were looking for more than just a romp in the sheets. They may be part of the Alpha-Team, but they were not Alpha men when together : Alexei’s tenderness mixed with a good deal of sexy teasing and Sean’s insecurities were swooning. Which didn’t prevent for very hot scenes, just like this author can write.
As for the plot, it was riveting and so much better than the one in book2. And the action scenes : they didn’t steal the show but added the perfect thrill to the romance and were vividly detailed. If Luc Besson could produce a movie with this series, I would be the first to buy a ticket !!

The perfect combination of suspense and action, of sexiness and hotness, of superheroes with really cool superpowers, but still humans, with their physical limits, and with families to worry about.

The downside : I now have high expectations with the next 2 books !!! I want to see how the general plot resolves and how Alexei and Sean will get their HEA.

*** Earth; 2285. *** A Fabulous new world.
Metahumans, those with special powers, enhancements that make them valuable warriors.
* Russian Alexei, assigned to MDF, Metahuman Defense Force,

a Marine with pyrotechnic abilities is called "Inferno." Loved his accent !
* Sean, former CIA, now with the MDF,

code name "Wraith" because he can phase through walls, etc.

On Sean's mission, he was roughed up and held prisoner. Alexei acting as his boss, came with the MDF to extract Sean and the other two hostages. The next undercover mission requires Alexei and Sean to be a couple. In real life they wish it was true. Lyosha and Kotyonok. Alexei is adorable for a big hard ass Marine. These guys are great together. We get the gist of their stories and past. Both are dedicated, tough as steel, and strong characters.

The evil Declan, once a Special Forces member, now has multiple companies, is a Splice dealer, and all round bad guy. Besides the action in New Miami, and New Las Vegas, under the bio domes, there is also a huge battle in Montana, where Declan's family ranch is. We learn the strange living circumstances, how people survive, and more about the homegrown terrorists Declan teamed with. Sean is also worried about his family having protections.

Our men are so sexy, with key words; electric sparks, hard thrusts, grinding, harder, deeper, and sinfully hot...!

We get moving dialogue, action, sizzles, fantastic descriptions, deep emotions, and it's a real page turner. Sean finds a surprise in the battle, and we are excited about that. Our guys are glad they can be together after the debriefing.
We get a HFN, and we are satisfied.
Highly recommended. ENJOY !

I didn't really like this one as much as the other two. Too much info dumping on the what, who, why, where stuff. I admit I skimmed a little *ducks*. More action less talking about the action, please. I completely understood why the team couldn't wait to get out the briefings. But when Sean and Alexei were together, they were magic. I love how once Alexei decided he wanted Sean, he was all in. The sexy times aren't overflowing in this one (no lie-I missed it) but Alexei has a hardcore voyeur kink and he loves to watch Sean fall apart. So hot!

Major niggle....this author likes her abrupt endings, man. I was reading and then BAM the Kindle pop up. I was like Nooooooooo! Ugh. Similiar to the first book, we get a tentative HFN without feelings being said. You can see them, they're tangible but I wanted the words, dammit. I feel a little jipped.

I liked it better this time around. I found the small imperfections in Sean and Alexei very endearing. The second part of the book was simply wonderful.

Another fabulous instalment in this series!
If you had told me (before I read Hailey Turner) that I would go all gaga for a bunch of metahumans I might have thrown you a seriously bewildered look.

The fact is – I love those guys and girls, their superpowers, camaraderie and banter. But most of all they are a tight knit group of people who care about each other, who are family and have each other’s backs in all situations. And let’s face it – having powers is just supercool and so much fun!

Sean has the superpower (he can move through solid objects), but he never had that kind of support before. His work as a spy never allowed him to open up and share what he does and who he is. Not even his family know about him. In short, Sean has been leading a very lonely existence – privately and professionally. Being part of Alpha Team is a very new experience for him because it means relying on others and fitting into the team.

It also means making friends … like Alexei.

Alexei is Kyle’s brother and Russian. Although I really liked Sean who is a decent guy through and through, I do have a huge soft spot for Alexei, the pyrokinetic. He is the epitome of a guy who’s rough and gruff on the outside, but as soft as Jaffa cakes on the inside.

And he is fiercely loyal and protective of those he loves.
And he is sinfully hot (not only because of his power!). Yes, that moment when he emerges out of the swimming pool in his tiny little bathing trunks will be ingrained in my brain forever.

He is also not one for giving up when he wants to pursue something … or someone.

Both men are confident and efficient as hell when it comes to their jobs. And both are equally insecure when it comes to matters of the heart. While Sean thinks he has no chance with Alexei because he hates spies, Alexei can’t see why Sean would want him.
Which leads to some very cute and tender moments. (Boy, I loved when Alexei goes all mother hen on Sean!) The sexy times are not to be scoffed at either – they’re maybe not as hot and intense as Jamie and Kyle, but nonetheless sigh-worthy. And Miss Turner certainly gets full marks for the most innovative language lesson ever!

As always Hailey Turner’s world building is stunning. The images she conjures up are vivid and convincing. And I really appreciate her attention to detail (microscopic nanites healing people, domes over cities keeping harmless sunrays at bay, holographic displays everywhere,...)

So prepare for action, lots of it! Name anything you’ve seen in an action thriller – and you will find it here, I bet!
Only thing – I am not sure if I really know why Sean and Alexei fall in love. They are friends first and their feelings develop slowly, which is a good thing, but that happens before the start of the book. I would have liked a little bit more depth there.

Fab book, great entertainment, hot guys – enjoy it!

Reread/Relisten #5: November 2023

Love these two, and love this series, but I feel a slump coming on that I need to put this on pause so I don't ruin my love for this series!

Reread/Relisten# 4 January 2022:

ALEXEI ALEXEI!!! 🔥🔥❤️❤️

Reread/Relisten #3: September 2021

Yeah nothings changed this series is one of my all time favorites!

Reread/Relisten #2: May 2021 4.5 stars

I was getting pulled in to a slump and this book helped, nothing a sassy Russian and shy spy can fix. Sean and Alexei are one of my favorite couples.

Reread/Relisten #1: March 2021 4.5 stars

Still love this series and Alexei and Sean will always be my number 1 couple in this series!

Going through the Metahuman books again has been great and Greg Boudreaux is still amazing especially the Russian accent for Alexei!

Book 4 here I come!

Original Read/Listen: March 2021:
Audio: 5 million stars it's Greg B!!
Book: 4.5 stars

Yup this is becoming a new favorite series and Alexei and Sean are so cute together. I love their relationship more than Kyle and Jamie to be honest...

This was more action packed and less focused on the sex which was so much better, and their relationship was built up before anything happened which made me love them so much more!

Can’t wait to continue, ps Greg Boudreaux reading these books is pure perfection!

Tons of action!

This third book of the Metahuman Files focuses on Alexei and Sean. Sean is the ex-CIA operative, now MDF spy. The distrust present between the two in the previous book is completely gone here. Although they have to play the lovers role again for a case their working on, they don't pretend for long. The two make a good pair, both in the field and in bed.

The MDF is still tracking SPLICE traffickers and now have a new player in the game in the guise of the CIA. There's lots of action and explosions here, and we really see Sean's phasing power put to use. This is definitely not a standalone novel.

I'm looking forward to the next one and wondering who the MCs will be.

This whole series is getting better and better with every book.

I really like Kyle and Jamie, but I was truly waiting for Alexei and Sean story. And I’m not disappointed, they make a wonderful couple. They are both very interesting characters on their own but together they are exceptional. I really like the dynamics in their relationship. Sean looks like a strong character, it’s nice to see how he interacts with Alexei. And I really like how caring and somehow sweet is Alexei. He surprised me. He is much more complicated hero than I expected.

The action part is as good as always and quite twisted. I really like how plot focuses on Alexei and Sean this time instead of following Kyle and Jamie as usual. It will be nice to watch both couples but right now I think I’m waiting more for Alexei and Sean story.

Anyway, I can’t wait to read the next book.

4.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this third installment. Which, while we have a different couple in this than the first two, cannot be read as a standalone because the first two are needed to understand what is happening in this and what has happened with Alexei and Sean prior to this book.

Overall I really liked this because it was pretty solid, Alexei and Sean had great chemistry - and hot af sex - and the plot, after a slow start for me, really picked up and got exciting and crazy and could-not-put-downable

This starts months after what happened in book 2, and Alexei and Sean have seen each other around MDF headquarters and become something somewhat like friends, but because Sean still isn't technically a part of the Alpha Team, they haven't seen each other a ton.

But this opens with Sean dealing with something that is a continuation of the ongoing case the Alpha Team has been dealing with since book one, and we learn even more about it all and what's going on and who is the bad guy and what not in this. And because Sean is dealing with it, he is pulled back into being with the Alpha Team, who also gets pulled into what is going on.

Alexei still has to play as if he is the COO of the fake company they had in book 2, and that brings him to have to "pretend" to be in a relationship with Sean. That, and their close proximity for the first time in months, leads to them finally giving into temptation and sleeping together.

This was different than Kyle and Jamie in that they didn't immediately fall into bed together for a one night stand - because neither Sean or Alexei are ones for one night stands. But the slow start of setting up the rest of the book, and getting these two to that place of sleeping together, made it drag for a big, imo. Which is why I rounded down to 4 starts instead of up to 5. Also, I really enjoyed Sean and Alexei together, but they didn't quite have the same thing about Jamie and Kyle that I love.

But these two, by the end of this, kind of like Kyle and Jamie, have only been seeing each other for a couple weeks, so it is a solid happy for now ending. I'm sure we'll get another book with them to get them to their HEA - or at least "I love you's" which haven't happened yet.

Sean also deals with telling his family who he is and what he's been doing because of circumstances out of his control, and he has to deal with the fall out of that. And Alexei is supportive and there for him through it.

These two are adorable together, imo, and I enjoyed their scenes a lot - and will be excited to read the next book about them - because there has to be ;) - although I missed Jamie and Kyle being a focus too. I hope we get enough books to have Jamie and Kyle be the focus again too because I love them together and there is SO much story left to tell with them.

Anyway, definitely a solid third installment for me. Not quite up to the greatness of the first two, I think, but still good and enjoyable. Definitely recommend :D

IN THE SHADOWS continues Alpha Team's mission to stop several terrorist groups from joining forces to create their own metahumans. But this time readers follow along with Alexei and Sean and I loved watching their relationship develop. I missed seeing more of Kyle and Jamie but Alexei and Sean brought something different to the story.

Alexei is Kyle's adoptive brother and I loved his gruff personality and his touch-him-and-die protective streak when it came to Sean. Alexei might seem intimidating to those who don't know him but he's a bit of a softy under it all and I adored the way he would tease Sean. Beneath Sean's walls he's a sweet, generous, and lonely man. I found myself constantly wanting to hug Sean; he's so used to being on his own from his CIA days and he's never really had a team he could trust.

While Sean and Alexei were plenty sexy together its in a more tender and gentle way than we had with Jamie and Kyle. Sean isn't used to really thinking about his own desires or being with someone who wants the real him and not his cover persona. So I adored the way Alexei always made sure to address consent with Sean and the way he would check in so that they could truly build trust together.

This series has quickly become a favorite and I can't wait to read the rest and follow both of these couples' journeys.

Favorite Quotes:

“Should duck,” Alexei said as he turned to palm open the door.

“You keep saying that. I know how to duck.”

“Face say otherwise.”

The thought of walking around with Alexei’s claim on him made him hot under the skin. Sean hadn’t ever felt like this before—wanted for himself and not an identity that wasn’t real.

Review from 2019

I've given this an A+ for narration and a B+ for content at AudioGals, so that's a bit above 4.5 stars and I've rounded up.

In the Shadows is book three in Hailey Turner’s Metahuman Files series of military/sci-fi/suspense novels which features an elite, tight-knit unit of men and women who acquired very unique powers following their exposure to Splice, a deadly chemical that kills almost all who come into contact with it. Those not killed by the chemical are changed at DNA level and become metahumans, each possessed of some sort of superpower that ranges from telepathy to telekenisis, from super strength to shape-shifting. There’s an overarching plotline running throughout the series which means it’s advisable to listen to the books in order – and there are spoilers for books one and two in this review.

The first book, In the Wreckage, introduced listeners to Captain Jamie Callahan and Alpha Team of the Metahuman Defence Force and set in motion the series’ main plotline – the hunt for a terrorist group known as the Sons of Adam who is trying to create metahumans of its own by conducting experiments on human subjects. In book two, In the Ruins, the action moved to London, and Alpha Team was joined by MDF Intelligence Agent Sean Delaney – formerly of the CIA – in an operation between the MDF and the UMG (its UK equivalent) to gather evidence about the Russian government’s involvement – via the Russian Mafia – in those experiments as part of its plan to create an army of metahumans. During the course of these novels, Jamie and Alpha Team’s sniper, Kyle Brannigan, became lovers and are now in a long-term relationship that has to remain a secret because of the MDF’s strict non-fraternisation rule. Keeping their relationship a secret is hard on both of them, and Jamie also has to deal with the pressure being put on him by his wealthy family to quit the military and go into politics like his father, who is likely to earn the Republican nomination for the upcoming Presidential election. Jamie has no intention of leaving the MDF, but agrees to a compromise; he’ll accompany his father on the campaign trail when he can, and by the time In the Shadows opens, he’s doing just that. With Jamie’s absence (for part of the story anyway), the focus of this novel shifts slightly and moves away from Jamie and Kyle as the main romantic couple – but never fear, all the other things that work so well about this series are still very much in evidence; skilful worldbuilding, sexy love scenes, superbly written action scenes and the terrific camaraderie between the members of Alpha Team, who all have very specific parts to play and are never just “window dressing”.

The novel opens as Sean continues to pursue the investigation begun in the previous book. In the guise of CFO of the cyber-security company created for Alpha Team’s mission in London, he’s meeting with casino magnate Adrian Wolcott in the hopes of getting an “in” with the man’s younger brother, Declan, who is the owner of one of the top private military companies in the US – and who has been linked to Nikolaas Jansen, a well-known black-marketeer (and a powerful empath) and the Russian mob. When the mission goes pear-shaped, Sean can’t risk blowing his cover by using his phase power (he’s able to move through solid objects) to get himself out, so Alpha Team – minus Jamie and Kyle – is sent to New Miami to effect an extraction.

Once accomplished, Sean returns to MDF HQ where he’s informed that the mission parameters have changed somewhat, and that he’s being seconded to Alpha Team, who will provide back-up and support when he goes back undercover in the attempt to make contact with Declan Wolcott. Having spent most of his adult life working alone, Sean can definitely appreciate the prospect of having people around him to watch his back; he’s rarely had the luxury of being around people who know what he does for a living, and it’s freeing for him. As is knowing he won’t be disavowed and left to fend for himself if things go wrong. Over a decade living a double life means Sean is adept at lying, concealing his reactions and slipping into whatever persona is required of him – but it has also separated him from his family (who think he’s a bank auditor), and his parents and siblings are getting tired of the excuses Sean trots out to avoid visiting, not knowing he keeps his distance in order to keep them safe.

Since working with Alpha Team in London, Sean has struck up an unlikely friendship with Kyle’s brother, Alexei Dvorkin (Kyle was adopted by the Dvorkins when he was a teen). Alexei made no secret of his dislike of spies, yet there was a definite undercurrent of attraction between the two men during the mission, and since it ended, they’ve met for lunch a few times and kept in touch. Even though he’s well aware that Alexei’s dislike of his profession means nothing but friendship is on the table, Sean can’t deny that he’s strongly attracted to the handsome Russian with the hot bod and the unexpectedly dry sense of humour.

At the risk of sounding clichéd, Alexei is something of a Russian (Teddy) Bear. Big, muscled and deadly, Alexei can also be ridiculously sweet (and more than a bit naughty!) and is incredibly loyal to those he cares for. He’s had his share of hook-ups and flings, but he prefers to go to bed with people he likes and feels a connection with – and right now, his attention is turned towards one particular brown-eyed, brown-haired, slightly aloof intelligence agent.

I’m not saying more about the plot; it’s clever and fast-paced, and the author’s ability to write vividly descriptive action sequences is once again on display; there’s a superb set-piece in the second half of the book which played out like a mini-action movie in my head. The romance between Sean and Alexei is also really well done; we saw them working together in the last book and witnessed the sparks flying and we know they’ve been meeting up since, so when their relationship turns physical, there’s already an emotional connection between them, which the author builds on during the course of the story. The love scenes are hot, sexy and sweet at times, without the element of D/s that characterises those between Jamie and Kyle.

I don’t think anyone will be surprised when I say that Greg Boudreaux’s performance is flawless and does much to enhance what is already a really good story. These novels are ensemble pieces, so there is a large number of recurring secondary characters, both male and female, all of whom are distinctly characterised and performed consistently across the three books in the series so far. The female members of Alpha Team – all of them kickass and fabulous – are easy to tell apart; Annabel’s southern drawl, Madison’s energy and impish glee at the prospect of getting to blow shit up and Katie’s calmly authoritative “don’t fuck with me” manner are all brilliantly realised. When it comes to the guys, Sean’s lighter tone contrasts nicely with Alexei’s deep, Russian-accented rumble, and Mr. Boudreaux injects a tenderness and vulnerability into their private moments which really conveys the depth of their feelings for one another. I also like the way in which, when Kyle and Alexei converse in Russian (which they do fairly often) Alexei’s accent disappears and his speech is more fluent – which makes perfect sense, as he’s speaking in his own language (and wouldn’t have an accent).

In the Shadows is a high-octane, high-stakes story featuring a set of really engaging characters and a sexy and emotionally satisfying romance. It’s a terrific addition to the Metahuman Files and I’m eagerly anticipating the audio release of book four.

I LOVE THIS SERIES...

05/07/19 - Update to Review after listening to Audio...

Every book just gets better and better. As much as I love Jamie and Kyle (I'm totally, completely In Love with Kyle) I absolutely Adore Alexi and Sean after this book. I really enjoyed seeing the two of them together. They have some seriously smoking Hot chemistry together that just radiates off the pages of this book. And both their backstories are great to hear, you really feel for both of them and what they have to give up to be who they are and do what they do for their Country and being Metahumans. I feel like I don’t really have the words to fully describe how much I love these books and this entire team/family of people we’ve gotten to meet and know so far. I cannot wait to see what happens next. To the point where I actually read this book cause I didn’t want to wait for the Audio-book to come out. Lol.

Audio - Man, oh, man.... Greg Boudreaux is such a great freaking Narrator. His voices and (Russian) Accents are just so dang spot-on amazing. You really get the feeling like your immersed in these books. Everyone should really experience these in Audio, even if you've read them previously it's just such a different perspective you really don't want to miss. Just amazing. I will pick up all of Greg's Narrated Audio-books with out a hesitation at this point.

The third installment of Hailey Turner’s sizzling and suspenseful Metahuman Files did not NOT let me down. So much so that I couldn’t PUT it down. Similar to its predecessors, it left me wanting more and wanting it now!

Comparison between our beloved (for the most part) metahumans and the X-Men are fairly apt. That being said, I want to reiterate that this is a fresh and fun take that doesn’t feel derivative or repetitive. While the world building in this sci-fi lite series was done and done well, the “relationship” building continues to unfold. I adored the teasing, the ribbing, the confessions, the overall growing among the members of Alpha Team. I’m big on friendships in romance, and this series delivers in that respect.

Quite frankly, I appreciated that there was more emotion between Alexei and Sean when they came together. A tangible and potent connection had been brewing between the two, which added more depth to their scenes. Sean, the sweet superspy, had been unable to trust, to let his guard down, to share himself – not just with a lover, but his own family. Alexei, despite his distrust and distaste (which is putting it mildly) of spooks, found himself drawn to Sean and wanting to befriend him, comfort him, protect him. And, eventually, utterly and totally possess him. Although , it made sense in that the book only spanned a few weeks. Since Jamie and Kyle were featured in two books, I’m hoping that Alexei and Sean will similarly be “the stars" of another because I want more sharing, growing, and caring. Also sexing because I’m a perv. Look, I appreciate well-written steam in my romance novels, but it’s actually rare that a book really and truly, um, gets me going. This, like its predecessors, did the job, but I'd have preferred a bit more. Sean’s uncertainty added a tenderness to their sexual dynamic and I’d love to see more of that!

I did miss Jamie and Kyle. My greedy self wants to revisit them because I’m not wholly satisfied with the hiding, despite the potential for some good angst. I already can’t wait for whatever and whoever is next in line!

Just as brilliant as the first two - now I need book 4!

This series is absolutely brilliant. I've said it before, but it is difficult to write good sci-fi with metahumans and just not have them be so powerful they can instantly diffuse any situation.

Hailey has got the balance between having her diverse bunch of powerful people be able to neutralise threats and deal with the bad guys but still have an inherent feeling of danger which makes your heart race just a tiny bit while reading.

In this one we step away from Jamie and Kyle to focus instead on Kyle's adoptive brother Alexei and oh lordy is he delicious. Fiery like his pyrotechnic power, he's brusk and terse, a man of actions not words, and he doesn't like spies.

Which puts rather an interesting twist on things when former CIA agent Sean Delaney's mission gets more complicated and Alexei has to get up close and perhaps a bit more personal than he'd initially liked.

The two of them are gorgeous together, Sean is shy and inexperienced in spite of the times he's had to sleep with someone as part of his cover and Alexei brings out a hidden side of him which is sensual, erotic and downright sexy.

When the mission goes south, both men fight to keep the other safe with all the skills at their disposal. The action is as nail biting as in the first two books, the angst is low level and the camaraderie between the team is still great to read.

When Team Alpha deploys, the bad guys know it and smoking wreckage is usually left in their wake. There has to be a book 4, I want more of this pair, more of this team and the big bad threat is still looming on the horizon.
