Everest: The Remarkable Story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay

Rate this book
In the late morning of May 29, 1953, the sun was shining brightly and a gentle breeze was blowing on the highest elevation of the world--and two men were there to witness it for the first time ever. Their names were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, and they had ascended Everest. This is the breathtaking story of how two very different, yet equally determined, men battled frost-biting temperatures, tumbling ice rocks, powerful winds, and death-defying ridges to reach the top of the world's highest mountain.

Combining fresh and contemporary illustrations by Joe Todd-Stanton with Alexandra Stewart's captivating writing, this unique narrative tells the story of how Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made their mark on the world from birth right up to their final days and the impact they've had on Nepal today.

Superbly illustrated children's picture book about Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's quest to be the first people to summit Mt. Everest. Tons of interesting tidbits satisfied my mini obsession with all things Everest!

I would love to climb to the top of Everest. Reaching the summit of Everest is one of the toughest physical challenges on Earth and is something that has only been accomplished by just over 5,000 people. The sad fact is that many have died trying to take on the challenge of Everest - from experienced climbers to the sherpas who carry equipment and guide the way. It is as tough to do today as it was back in 1953 when a New Zealander and a Tibetan stood on the highest point on Earth.

In 1953 two ordinary people achieved the extraordinary. Everest is the incredible true story of two men who climbed a mountain and in doing so became famous around the world. The intrepid duo navigated deadly ice crevasses, survived freezing temperatures, battled ferocious winds and avoided falling rocks on their way to the top. The story of Hillary and Norgay is testament to what can be achieved through hard work and determination.

Neither was from particularly well to do families. Hillary was the son of a beekeeper and Norgay was the son of a yak herder. Hillary struggled at school and longed for adventures beyond the classroom. It was on a school trip that Hillary would experience the joy of snow and climbing mountains. This was the start of adventures that would see him scale the mountains of New Zealand to the tallest mountain on Earth. Norgay was fascinated by the mountains that surrounded him, he was drawn to Everest. His early years would see him run away from a monastery, run away from his home to Kathmandu before returning, and finally making his way to Darjeeling where his adventures on Everest would begin. Norgay had found his calling as a sherpa and would become one of the most-respected sherpas in the Himalaya region. It was in March 1953 on the lawn of the British Embassy in Kathmandu that Hillary was first charmed by Tenzing’s dazzling smile and the start of an incredibly special relationship was born. I love that Norgay is given as much page time as Hillary. I knew very little about Tenzing Norgay prior to reading this book.

Achieving the impossible dream was about much more than the men who stood on top of the world. Stewart recognises all of those that were involved in the remarkable achievement - the scientists, the kit makers, the sherpas, the climbing team and the wider climbing community. The previous exploits of others provided valuable information and knowledge.

The book is split into four parts which detail the early lives of Hillary and Norgay, The Race for Everest, The Climb and finally The Legacy. The pages are beautifully presented. Each page has been carefully thought through and presented in a way that is engaging and accessible to the reader. The book features family trees, maps, double page spreads that feature stunning artwork and blocks of text, annotated illustrations, timelines, survival guides and newspaper front pages. The story is expertly told by Alexandra Stewart and the superb illustrations by Joe Todd-Stanton sweep you away to the mountains of the Himalayas. There is also the inclusion of a wonderful foreword by legendary explorer Ranulph Fiennes. I love everything about this book. It is beautiful to look at, tells the incredible achievement in a thrilling story and and is full of facts and incredible information.

There are so many life messages throughout the book. The climb was a success because the duo were resourceful, resilient, worked as a team, took risks and were able to balance risk with reward. Valuable lessons for any reader - young or old.

The read is exciting, it is thrilling and it fully captures the dangers that Hillary and Norgay faced. Even though this is recounting a historical event, I found times when I was gripping the book as hard as those mountaineers would have been gripping the ice and rock. The tension that the climbers faced on the way to the to summit is palpable

An inspirational read for any would-be-explorers.

The thought of climbing Everest terrifies me! So I applaud those who have done it. This is a read all about Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay and their lives.....how they got to the place where they summited Everest. Thankfully the Sherpas and native peoples get acknowledgement.

However, this is a LONG picture book (over 70 pages) and the font styles are often too small. It's a book that will appeal to several but not all.

I don't usually rate picture books, but the girls and I enjoyed this one SO much that I had to write a brief blurb about it: with beautiful, upbeat, interesting spreads, this book educates children (I think it's designed for upper elementary) about Mount Everest, the dangers thereof, Nepalese culture, and the biographies of Norgay and Hillary. My family read a spread or two every day for morning time, and we got so much good information as well as a love for the subject matter! The girls want to climb Everest now (let 'em dream) and recently when avalanches were an obstacle in a board game, the five-year-old said, "I'm in the Khumbu Icefall!" Then when Nepal came up in a missionary book, they all squealed! So this is a great book for any kid who's interested in learning more about this mountain or these men.

This is technically a kids book but it's now so close to my heart, purely because Stewart and Todd-Stanton told the story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay with so much more respect, kindness and equality than I've ever seen them given. It was so lovely to see Tenzing Norgay brought out of Hillary's shadow and to have the work of everyone who helped them highlighted. The illustrations were also especially gorgeous!

Everest: The Remarkable Story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay is a children's picture book written by Alexandra Stewart and illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton. This is the story of how Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand beekeeper, and Tenzing Norgay, a Tibetan yak herder, became the first two men in recorded history to reach the top of Mount Everest.

Edmund Percival Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. Tenzing Norgay was a Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer. Together they were the first two individuals known to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953.

Stewart's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, informative, and lyrical. Stewart emphasizes that reaching the top was a group effort involving many more men than are usually credited. Todd-Stanton's dazzling illustrations that subtly and effectively incorporate relevant facts.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. In addition to presenting the childhoods of these two men and their mutual obsession with summiting the highest mountain in the world, the book traces the history of European expeditions to Everest, the triumphant climb itself, and the effects the victory had on Hillary’s and Norgay's adult lives.

All in all, Everest: The Remarkable Story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay is an engaging and well-illustrated text about two men and one mountain.

A New Zealand beekeeper and Nepalese yak herder succeeded in ascending the world's highest peak on May 29, 1953. This was also the coronation day of Queen Elizabeth II, and claimed a "crowning achievement." Mount Everest (called Sagarmatha, "Goddess of the Sky" in Nepal,) at 29,029 feet was an epic challenge requiring the support of hundreds of scientists, sherpas, mountaineers, and fund-raisers in difficult teamwork. Illustrations by Joe Todd-Stanton range from cartoon simplicity to an alarmingly realistic depiction of the Khumbu Icefall. While in nonfiction picture book format, the information is fascinating, detailed, well-organized, and completely accessible. Amazingly, both men's sons (Peter & Jamling also made it to Everest's summit in 1990 and 1996!) I was brought to tears at its conclusion due to the humble nature of Sir Ed and Tenzing, and their close bond beyond their heroic contributions.

As the title says, this is the story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, both separately and together, including the history of those who climbed before them, giving hope and information for this incredible climb. Through all the years of their lives, and some of the world's history as they grew into the accomplished men they were, Alexandra Stewart sets the path and Joe Todd-Stanton illustrates with small paragraphs and artistic creations of the people, the equipment, and the mountains. The double-page spread of Mt. Everest is extraordinary and daunting to see, showing this first feat of getting to the top!

In this picture book, we learn about the amazing lives of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. We also learn about the dangers of such expeditions, the many failed attempts prior, the equipment needed and the seemingly impossible terrain that needed to be conquered. The book continues on after the summit to tell us the other adventures and charitable work that Hillary and Norgay led. It is beautifully written and illustrated and is a wonderful tribute to the two men who became hero’s for their countries and the world.

64 pgs. This is a well-written, supe-small font book about the incredible journey to the top of Mt. Everest. The life of the sherpa named Tenzing Norgay was very interesting as well as Edmund Hillary. The illustrations are colorful and helpful in the explanation of the geography and basic story. This book can definitely be used in research as well as basic understanding of famous people/explorers. Highly recommended for Grades 5 and up. This book will take a while to read since the font is so small. I learned a lot from it.

Ever since reading Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air," I have been an Everest buff, reading several books and watching many documentaries and shows about Everest.

This book is a good overview of Edmund Hillary's life, and I like how it delved into biographical details about Tenzing Norway as well - he is often glossed over in many accounts.

A large-format picture book, I found the print too small on some of the pages, where it wasn't warranted - there was enough space in the layout to enlarge the font.

Large size is great to showcase illustrations, but filled with lots of text in small font. Not a read aloud. Who is the intended audience? Will MS age students checkout a large picture book like this? Fascinating but best 1-1 with a grownup and a child who loves biographies, nonfiction and explorers/adventurers who will sit for several nights learning about these explorers. Again, another picture book adults will love.

This is such a great book! You learn the stories of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay before, during, and after their climb to the peak of Everest. The author did a great job putting the story together into this 64-page picture book that can be enjoyed by all ages. There is quite a bit of text, so you really learn a lot, and it probably took me an hour to read (thoroughly appreciating the artwork throughout).

This is a beautifully illustrated book, and has lots of good details about the first ascent of Everest. Not sure how many kids are going to get all the way through it though. Also, I really wish they had included some actual photographs of Hillary and Norgay, and Everest too. I liked the illustrations, but it would have been nice to have real photographs for kids to see at the end.

This is so much more than a picture book! You will see both Hillary and Norgay as their lives unfold to the conjunction point of 1953. It is the “race for the top” of Everest following the end of World War II. It is fascinating to read (and see) the Everest adventure unfold. However, the adventures continue far beyond Mount Everest!

A detailed and illustrated book about Hillary and Norgay's momentous achievement at Everest.

Miss 6 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

This is a exceptional and important book which captivates the adventures of the first climbers to successfully ascend Everest. The book conveys several scenes through innovative illustrations which the children loved! This is a great book to teach children as it recognises the challenges, determination and perseverance to climb the highest mountain in the world.

A top-notch graphic biography of the Everest climbers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. I knew next to nothing about Norgay and was delighted that he was given equal time here. A lovely read -- for older children as well as adults.

This is a good story about adventure and achieving difficult goals. It can also be considered a biography of both men. Overall the book could have been better as the presentation is lacking. The very small, fancy fonts used in some places are not user friendly. A better map of Everest and the Himalayas would have been helpful.
