The first biography of one of modern rock’s most influential figures. Emerging from the morass of suicide and potent musical legacy that was Nirvana, the Foo Fighters established themselves - against all odds - as one of the most popular rock bands in the world. Deflecting early critical disdain, Dave Grohl has single-handedly reinvented himself and cemented his place in the rock pantheon. This is his story, from his pre-Nirvana days in hardcore band Scream to his current festival-conquering status as a Grammy-winning, platinum-selling grunge legend reborn.
My brother picked this up years ago in England. It takes the reader on the journey from Dave's childhood through 2003 with Foo Fighters. Honestly, I would have given this another star if the book had been edited better (or at all). Ridiculous typos and some horrible sentence structure took me out of the book too many times to count. But it's a quick enough read to skim and still get the backstory on Dave Grohl.
Just rereading this one before I start Dave Grohl’s new autobiography. I’m a huge fan of Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Mostly excerpts of interviews from different magazines. It came out in 2003 so it’s almost 20 years old. Looking forward to reading the new one next from his own perspective!
Martin Jamesin kirjoittama Dave Grohlin elämäkerta on lähinnä toiskätisistä tiedoista koottu teos, joka kokonaisuutena on kuitenkin suhteellisen toimiva. Toki kirja on nyt luettuna jo hieman vanha. 2010 julkaistu kirja kattaa Grohlin historian Nirvanasta, Foo Fightersin Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace albumiin asti. Matkan varrella on ollut monenlaista kokeilua Queens of the Stone Agesin rumpalina, hevikimaran säveltämistä vieraileville laulajille Probot-nimikkeen alla ja Them Crooked Vultures -superkokoonpanon kasaamista. Kirja katkeaa juuri ennen Foo Fightersien kenties menestyneimmän, USA albumilistan kärkeen nousseen, Wasting Light albumin julkaisua.
Dave Grohlin sielu puuttuu kirjasta.
This is more for the ardent fan or music lover or musician who is familiar with Dave's music and who would like to learn more. It compares his music against others, and against his own music, and speaks only in broad terms about his personal life and relationships.
Published in 2003, so a bit dated, but a close look at formational times for Grohl and Foo Fighters. I appreciated that the author kept some distance (most of the time) and noted both positive and negative things about the subject. The book was a bit too loose with opinions at times so I almost gave a three, but the subject matter bumped it up to a 4.
I read this in high school. It influenced me positively, showing the way Grohl conducted himself in his early career and set himself up for a life of creativity and collaboration. Can't wait for the memoir though. :)
Collection of interviews from news portals thrown together. It's a lousy attempt to mix punk/hardcore/grunge history with Grohl. And sprinkle it with reviews of records and concerts. All done terribly. Not worth reading.
Grohl is one of my favorite musicians and this is a superb look into his mentality. Not only does it showcase Grohl but gives a music history lesson on the who’s who that shaped him.
First of all i LOVE the Foo Fighters. They are probably my favorite band and to me Dave Grohl is the hottest thing..lol so the book. LOVED it. To see what all Dave has gone through with losing kurt kobain then the demise of Nirvana and all the other dramatic moments that took him into the Foo Fighter reign that it is today. Not often a band can hang around for SIXTEEN years (and counting) and stay together and be family men. I am thoroughly impressed.
Dave Grohl is so talented!! Fun personality and good sense of humor... Enjoyable read, though I don't care a ton about the different punk scenes he discusses... but still, great guy and amazing musician!
