To Flush, My Dog Loving friend, the gift of one, Who, her own true faith, hath run, Through thy lower nature; Be my benediction said With my hand upon thy head, Gentle fellow-creature ... -Elizabeth Barrett Browning Since prehistory, dogs have served as man's best friend, giving us loyalty, assistance and boundless inspiration. Dogs offer comfort and amusement to their owners; they provide solace when we're sad, entertaining antics when we're bored and affection every day. To poets in particular, these beloved creatures are the most bountiful muses, as they bark, yip, hunt, fetch, growl and slumber, reflecting back at us our most heartfelt tenderness and often rewarding us with unconditional love we scarcely deserve. Dog Poems offers a litter of verses in celebration of our most faithful companions by some of the greatest poets of all time.
Notaleg og fallegt ljóðsafn um hunda. Nokkur ljóðin eru með lausari tengingu við hunda en ég átti von á og eru kannski valin vegna nafnanna sem skrifuðu þau frekar. En mörg mjög góð sem maður tengir mikið við ef maður þekkir og hefur elskað hund. Nokkur hreyfðu við mér en ég grét þó ekki sem er fyrsta sinn sem verk um dýr nær mér ekki, þess vegna færri stjörnur. Ljóðið eftir Rudyard Kipling stóð mest uppúr og lýsir einmitt þeirri tilfinningu sem ég hef oft fundið, á maður að opna hjartað sitt fyrir nýju dýri vitandi að það verði bara brotið á endanum. Stundum veit ég að svarið sé að það sé alltaf þess virði en stundum veit ég að ég hef enn ekki jafnað mig á missinum.
This collection of dog poems is wonderfully charming and really reminded me of the power of poetry - I have to admit on more than one occasion I really was reduced to tears (it's really difficult, especially as a dog owner, to read a beautiful poem about the passing of a dog). This is a beautiful and well-chosen collection that really shows off the variety that poetry can offer and I believe it's essential to anyone who loves dogs as much as I do!
As a side note, the poems I would particularly recommend from this collection are: To Flush, My Dog - Elizabeth Barrett Browning Epitaph to a Dog - George Gordon Byron My Dog Practices Geometry - Cathryn Essinger The House Dog's Grave - Robinson Jeffers A Dog Has Died - Pablo Neruda The Irony of the Leash - Eileen Myles If Feeling Isn't In It - John Brehm
The dog-pov poems made me feel the joy I imagine is experienced when dogs stick their heads out the window in the car—an invitation to the open air and a sense of wonder at all that passes by. The very charm of dogs seems to showcase the ingenious wit gathered in this anthology of poets.
This collection is for the dog lover who delights in language as much as in loyalty!
Some poems felt sad, and I’m far too governed by my feelings—thus, three stars.
Really enjoyed this. I wasn’t sure what to think going into it so ended up pleasantly surprised. Almost all the poems were quite good and thus it is a little hard to pick out a favourite; however only two I struggled with, those being Chaucer’s and one of Shakespeare’s. Would recommend this if you are curious about it as you won’t be disappointed.
There were some that I didn't like but that was personal preference. The book had a good wide range from Homer to modern day Poets with varying styles.
