The fourth bout of the team shokugeki begins with Erina finally taking the stage. Her opponent? The queen of cute confections, Momo Akanegakubo! But what kind of dish will the former ice queen present to combat such cuteness? Meanwhile, Isshiki and Takumi take on the council’s top two members—Tsukasa and Rindo!
Okay, this was not one of my faves. I love Isshiki and all, and was interested in actually seeing Erina cook for a change (instead of just judging other people's cooking), but...I missed Yukihira! And Megumi! And Takumi! And all those guys! And yeah, at this point I kinda feel like this Central thing has dragged on long enough, so I'm ready for it to wrap up soon. I mean, not for the manga as a whole to wrap up, because weirdly I'm still totally into it, just...this plot line. Let's move on, dude!
World: The art is solid, the world building is also solid calling back on the past and building characters and giving side characters more depth.
Story: Let's get this out of the way, the results were very transparent, you knew this was going to happen to allow for the finale to be 2 on 2, it's so obvious. That being said there are also some WHAT!! logic leaps here, namely the judge change which feels really unfair (not in a mwaa haa haa way but rather a writer heavy handed way). The pacing is okay, the dishes were interesting but yeah this was fairly contrived to move the pieces for the finale.
Characters: I like the Isshiki and her friend (which I forgot at the moment) and the moments they had, it's really heart felt and well done. It was not expected at all for a minor character and Isshiki but there was a lot of heart. The new judges are pointless and just tits and ass for the sake of tits and ass, it was really heavy handed to have them come into the story with Azami.
It was really heavy handed and contrived and transparent.
Oh thank god! All the preliminary rounds are now complete and the final, all-or-nothing competition for the soul of the Totsuki Institute starts next volume. There was nothing wrong with this volume except being just one more obstacle to the end of this interminable storyline. I love this series, but I am so ready to move onto something else. I just worry the final round will drag out for two or three volumes, but at least Soma will be back in the center of it instead of just sitting on the sidelines sipping tea (which was actually a pretty funny running gag this volume).
As both teams put forth some big guns for the team shokugeki, things get fierce. We finally get to see Erina Nakiri putting some effort into cooking, and that part was a real treat, including her version of one of Soma's tag lines. I am really enjoying the way that the cooking of the first-year students has influenced each other in very strange ways that lead to interesting culinary ideas. I wish that one pun/tribute hadn't had to be explained in notes, but it only made direct sense in Japanese, so I guess that was the simplest way to convey the meaning to the readers.
I'm tired of this plot! It's been going on foreeeever. I am looking forward to Suma and Erina cooking together, but I hope it doesn't take up a whole volume. I really miss them hanging out in the dorm and the classes/teachers and stuff. I still like this series, but I'm ready for the next thing!
Quick thoughts: Another really strong volume as the battle with the 10 rages on (and nears its finale). I particularly enjoyed some of the developments surrounding the 2nd Card.
We finally have the chance to see Erina's dish, a gourmet-style dorayaki (inspired by Megumi). Erina wins her match against Momo, signing off with a Soma-inspired catchphrase. Love that she's being influenced by her new friends!
Satoshi and Eishi face off with hare as the star ingredient. Satoshi's broth seems like it's going to win, but unfortunately, his efforts are surpassed by Eishi's. Eishi attempts to recruit Satoshi as an assistant, telling him that if he joins Central, Eishi will revoke the expulsion. We see also that Satoshi was inspired by Nene (Central second seat) when he was a child -- cooking was about rote learning and perfection, not enjoyment and fun until he met her. (This hardly seems correct. What we know about Nene is that she struggled to become technically perfect in everything that she did but that she didn't excel at adaptation or innovation -- she never seemed like someone who was having fun while cooking.) Nevertheless, I wonder if Nene might defect to the rebels' side in the future. It depends on whether Satoshi's words have had any impact.
Both Rindo and Takumi pull out delightful-looking dishes (theme: squid?) but unfortunately, Rindo wins this match.
This means the fifth bout will feature Soma and Erina (rebel side) cooking against Eishi and Rindo (Central). They have their work cut out for them, since Eishi and Rindo are Elite Ten first and second seats, respectively. Erina's grandfather declares that the fifth bout will be the final match -- the winners will be decided, for better or for worse. (Who predicts a near-draw of some sort with some crazy "The rebels have more spirit!" declaration that allows them to win somehow?)
Erina's father also decides that he's going to change up the judging panel so that he can be on it. He's brought two high-level "bookmen" (WGO tasters) with him who are on his side. Also, he wants to taste Erina's cooking again, since Soma interrupted during the Moon Banquet. The current judges, particularly Anne, shut down this idea. She remains on the judging panel, while Erina's father and one of his WGO lackeys oust the other two originals.
The 1st card for the 4th bout has been revealed in the previous volume. Momo's bad mood and unexplainable irritation doesn't discourage her from the determination to win the match. The theme ingredient for their match is muscovado sugar.
I'm really grateful for this Volume. Everything seems to have worked out just fine just as Erina anticipated. Also, DAMN THAT ERINA. SHE GOT FIERCER! Finally she was able to stand up from that bastard father she got. I'm really glad she got to spend time at the Polar Star dorm and that really help her to change for the better and be free.. I am getting really anxious for the battle but I am sure both Yukihira and Erina will have something up their sleeves!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO TEAM REBEL !!!!!!!!!!!
Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 29 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (245–253) of the on-going manga series.
The Fourth Bout of the Régiment de Cuisine begins and concludes. Erina Nakiri wins unanimously in their battle of Muscovado sugar against Third Seat Momo Akanegakubo by disproving her thesis that cute things taste delicious, which limited her vision from what Momo deemed uncute ingredients. Unfortunately, Satoshi Isshiki loses unanimously against First Seat Eishi Tsukasa in the battle of Wild Rabbit and Takumi Aldini loses unanimously against Rindō Kobayashi in the battle of Spear Squid. As a result, there are two members left in both teams.
The Fifth and Final Bout of the Régiment de Cuisine begins. To make sure that this becomes the final round, Senzaemon Nakiri proposed a team match with each member of the team making one dish – an appetizer and main. The theme of this round is not an ingredient, but their definition of true gourmet. Sōma and Rindō will make the appetizers while Erina and Tsukasa will make the main dish.
This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It is nicely narrated and gives additional insight to the relationship of the Council of Ten Masters. Things look more dire for the Rebels as two of the judges are replaced an in replace of them are Azami Nakiri and Decora, the best World Gourmet Organization judge, who may or may not be a puppet for Azami Nakiri.
All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 29 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
We're finally getting to the final bout, and they're changing up the structure of it too. For sort of no reason, that feels unofficial, but whatever. Erina actually does something this volume, which is unbelievable. Who says she's allowed to affect the plot? Since when does that happen? It's great seeing other characters, like Aldini, get a spotlight, but when you put them up against the big bad villains you get what you expect, and the whole thing fizzles out. Oh, and why are we only now trying to make Rindo sympathetic? Sure, she's been one of the more entertaining parts of this long-winded arc but you wait until the penultimate bout to show that?
Erina and Momo face off with brown sugar and Isshiki and Tsukasa battle with rabbit
3.5 stars Erina's father is super creepy and his forcing himself onto the judging panel seems to doom our competitors. I'm looking forward to seeing how they get out of that one.
Corniest food-porn moment: definitely the "calamari lingerie collection" that is a result of Rindo vs. Aldini using an ingredient I've never heard of with spear squid.
I really enjoyed the way character arcs and backstory threads are starting to come together in this one, plus the way the end set up for the last book is epic! Might have been five stars except the 'I lose my clothes when food tastes good' parts got even more weird and disturbing than usual in this one.
I am really enjoying the developments of Isshiki and Nakiri in this volume. Seeing them battling it out with their own creativities and how certain people inspired them was great. I was sad that Aldini didn't get to take over Kobayashi, but well, that means the next volume will have a helluva match with the top two seats and our two hotheaded rebels.
Isshiki continues to remind me why he’s my favorite character! I loved getting his backstory and learning where his joy for cooking comes from. He has so much respect for his food and genuinely enjoys what he creates. I seriously wanted him to win that round, but I know he couldn’t for the story’s sake.
Somehow missed reading this volume when it came out. Reading it now certainly added more background to the next two volumes. I’m not nearly to the level of these fictional cooks but I’m always tempted to try some of the recipes!
Ooh a new twist to the judging! I love that these two new ladies call out Erina’s father for being a dick to Erina in front of literally the entire school. .
