The Single Dads of Seattle #1

Hired by the Single Dad

Rate this book
He needs someone to work with his son, she needs a job. They need to keep their hands to themselves.

Welcome to Seattle, the Emerald City and home to The Single Dads of Seattle. Ten sexy single fathers who play poker every Saturday night, have each other’s backs, love their children without quarter, and hope to one day find love again.
This is Mark's story …

Single Dad of Seattle Dr. Mark Herron can’t believe anyone would celebrate their divorce. The dissolution of his marriage left him and his son with a huge hole to fill in their home—and their hearts. So when he overhears a lovely stranger and her friends celebrating the end of her marriage, he’s mystified—and then intrigued—by her determination to put the past behind her. But when he learns that Tori Jones needs a job, he knows this can’t be a coincidence.

Tori might be telling the world nothing’s got her down, but the truth is she’s hit rock bottom. Her husband didn’t just cheat on her, he took all her money, including her college fund, which means her marriage is over, and so is her dream to go to grad school and help children with special needs. So when a handsome stranger offers her a job caring for his special needs son, she knows she can’t turn it down—

Even if what she’s feeling for Mark is far from professional.

Now Mark’s finding it hard to keep his hands to himself and Tori’s struggling to keep her thoughts from straying to dangerous territory. Will they be able to keep their distance from each other or will being hired by the sexy single dad be Tori’s biggest problem of all?

**Note: This book can be read as a standalone. It includes lots of steamy scenes, cursing, and of course as with all my books, this has an HEA and no cliffhanger or cheating. If you like single dads who take charge, this book is for you.

A Canadian West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have two beautiful daughters and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn't end up in the air conditioner. But when the kids are at school and it's not quite wine o'clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes.

A lover of all things decadent; wine, cheese, chocolate and spicy erotic romance, Whitley brings the humorous side of sex, the ridiculous side of relationships and the suspense of everyday life into her stories. With single dads, firefighters, Navy SEALs, mommy wars, body issues, threesomes, bondage and role-playing, Whitley’s books have all the funny and fabulously filthy words you could hope for.

12/17/2021 - DNF - I’m bummed this didn’t work out because single parent (dad in this case) is one of my favorite tropes.

The set-up was odd: I can’t believe any parent would hire a private therapist for their child just because they felt sorry for them and they were attractive. No references. No background check.

Then chapter 2 was a huge info dump on the various men making up the Single Dads Club, their kids, their exes, their professions, etc. I felt like I should have been taking notes.

I stopped listening when I got to chapter 3 and it’s the audio file from the 3rd book in the series. (I have KU and based on the names - I was able to borrow Saved by the Single Dad and confirm it’s the chapter from that book).

This was my first time listening to Allyson Voller & Zachary Johnson. While I liked their voices, the delivery for both wasn’t as dynamic as I’m used to. There was very little distinction between character voices - which is especially a problem when so many characters are introduced in such a short time.

This is the first book in The Single Dads of Seattle and Hired By The Single Dad starts this series off an a huge high. Not only is this the story of Mark and Tori but gives us a peak into the single Dads that we will meet along the way. A fated meeting of these two not only shows an instant spark between Mark and Tori but aligns a job surrounding his son. Tori still has fresh emotional scars from the recent demise of her marriage which have her seeking a new independence. As feelings become involved, it will give cause for both of these characters to err on the side of once bitten twice shy. As your heart rides the roller coaster of emotions that their story takes you on, you will also find yourself losing your heart to a beautiful little boy named Gabe. This book made me laugh, a little angsty, shedding tears and ignited a warmth from both the love and passion Mark and Tori cast.

I really wanted to like this one. It sounded just like what I was looking for. A sweet, cute single dad romance. Nope, not at all. I just, wow. Ok so the book starts off a little weird with Mark treating this group of women to rounds on him. Then he tells Tori (one of the women) he knows of a job with an autistic kid. His kid, unbeknownst to her. Oh but of course he plans on running background checks on her. In a nutshell he hires her. She seems great with his son and his son loves her.
She’s been an employee for a few weeks now. They are attacked to each other and they try to hide it till they go at each other like animals in the kitchen, with no protection. This from a man who doesn’t want more kids. Then he goes to her place to apologize and they go at it again. It was all just sex. I didn’t see any relationship growth between them. Just this lust and need.
Fast forward a few weeks (I think, I mean when they weren’t screwing each other the rest of the book dragged on) and she tells him she feels like a dirty secret, a mistress. She’s still not divorced. Hasn’t even filed for divorce or gotten a lawyer. Why oh why is she so worried about where the relationship is or where it’s headed? Shouldn’t she be worrying about her 1st marriage before she starts planning another? So he takes her to meet his friends and she still goes after him about being a dirty secret. She was obnoxious. He tells her that’s all I can give. He doesn’t want more kids, doesn’t even know if he wants a marriage. They get mad at each other and leave it at that.
***SPOILER***
This is where I get really down on the book. Her husband, yes husband, she has been ignoring all texts and phone calls for weeks plus she STILL hasn’t filed for divorce. What in the world wasn’t she answering him? Maybe he wanted to discuss divorce?!! Sack up lady!!! He Tracks her down at a park while she’s watching Gabe. He starts getting pushy saying he wants stuff back. Gabe comes to her cold and wanting to go home. She tells him to go play some more and turns her back on him to fight her husband. Smart. Smart move to turn your back on an autistic 5 yr old. Maybe tell your husband to talk to her lawyer, that they can do this later. Nope. Dusk in the rain while watching a child sounds like the perfect time for this argument. So of course the kid goes missing. She tries to find him and it can’t be 10 min later and she does and somehow this 5 year old safely crosses 2 lanes of traffic (4 lanes with a median) without getting hit or anyone driving noticing. It’s so busy in fact that she can’t reach him. That she just stands there wondering how she can get to him. REALLY?!!!!! So of course Mark drives by, saves his son and then he looses it on her at home. I mean looses it.

“Don’t. Don’t even try. You let … our situation”—he pointed back and forth between the two of them—“cloud your responsibilities. You got lazy. Figured now that you’re f@/!5ing your boss you didn’t have to watch his son, didn’t have to do your f$&@ing job! I pay you so f&@:$ing well, pay for your schooling, you should have your eyes glued to that child for the entire duration of your shift. But no, now that we started sleeping together, you figured you could slack off. Mark won’t care that I f’d around on shift, not as long as I get down on my knees later tonight.”

Wow just wow. This is a man saying he’s in love with her. I get it, she screwed up royally and his son could have died but that is no excuse for this verbal assault. That sums up his character I think.

The other thing about this book that really bothered me is the single dads group. Yeah great concept and if this book had any redeeming qualities I might have read the next in the series but she threw all of these guys at us at once. Even so far as to start describing their eye colors, hair colors, traits. I get that the characters need to be mentioned but trying to meet all 10 at once and keep them straight was a little much. A little overwhelming. I wish the author had gone about this differently. I’ve just come to the conclusion this authors books are not for me. As much as I was looking forward to this series I don’t think I can read anymore without throwing my phone.

A Solid 3.5

I really enjoyed this. The start had me a tad worried but it was short lived. There Mc were interesting and felt pretty grounded. but where would our leads be with out a great cast of side characters to back them up and set them straight. The plot was a ride especially for a story with such a small page count.

I think it was a great start to a series and I am definitely interested in continuing it.

Hired By The Single Dad is the first book in the Single Dads Of Seattle series by Whitley Cox.

The idea of a group of single fathers supporting each other is fantastic and unique. Hired By The Single Dad has a great plot and is very relatable.
In this is single dad romance, the hero, Mark, has a child on the spectrum. I liked that this story included a child with special needs, and Gabe got portrayed very realistic. I also liked how the author put a spotlight on how autism affects the family of the child.
I loved the connection Gabe and Tori had, and the father-son relationship between Gabe and Mark also was very beautiful.
I quickly fell in love with Mark and Tori, but Gabe is the one who holds a special place in my heart. The connection and love between these characters are constantly tangible.
Mark and Tori's chemistry was evident from the moment they met. This couple is perfect and made for each other. Tori was the missing piece of this family's puzzle.
The sex scenes were well built-up, but for me personally, they were a little short.

Hired By The Single Dad is narrated by Allyson Voller and Zachary Johnson. They did an excellent job and brought this story to life. Their voices matched well together, and every emotion, action, the event was audible in their voice. In my opinion, they made the story even better.

Hired by the single dad is a highly entertaining audiobook. The narration is on point, the story is entertaining, and it will keep you engaged from start to finish.

Meinung

Man muss ihn einfach mögen.

Don't ask me why but I really enjoy reading books about single fathers or mothers. Everyone deserves a second chance and nothing better than a single parent.
Whitley Cox is a new author to me and after reading the blurb of just one book I'm a goner. I loved it so much that the only right thing to do was to read it.
And once I started it...
Hired by the Single Dad is her latest release and it's the first book from the Single Dads of Seattle series... Oh boy...
This new book explores the lives of Mark and Tori.
Mark is a doctor that divides his time between his profession and his son. He thought he had the perfect family until he got his divorce. Now he needs to keep raising his son the best he can. One night at the bar...
Tori hit rock bottom. Not only did her so-called husband cheated on her but also stole all her money. That money was going to be used to help pay grad school and becoming a teacher. Now how can she? One job offer and...
I was all smiling once the book ended... It was a joy to read it.
Fantastic plot, well written, super engaging and intense. It was amazing the way this author approached Autism. A problem that affects not only the kids but their families and everyone around them. These kids need love, even more attention and need to be understood. It was a joy to see the way she portraits Gabe.
I saw myself wanting to hold him, and the main characters as well. It's a struggle that not everyone is not prepared to go through.
The chemistry between the two was hot as hell and Dayum the hot scenes...
It was amazing to have glimpses from the other characters for the books to come and I can't wait to read more.
Will it take to long Whitley, to get the next one? Please say no...
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

4.5 star review of Hired by the Single Dad (The Single Dads of Seattle #1) by Whitley Cox

This was a great introduction to Whitley Cox. I have been reading a lot more single parent books over the last twelve months as it has fast become one of my go to genres.

This is Dr. Mark Herron’s story and is also a great introduction to the series. Mark and his special needs son Gabe were left shattered by his divorce. When he overhears Tori Jones celebrating her divorce after discovering her ex was cheating and that he has stolen her savings, he cannot understand. However when he learns Tori is in desperate need of a job, he realises that fate has given him the help that he so badly needs.

However neither Mark or Tori expect the connection and feelings that smoulder between them. Will they be prepared to take another chance at happiness or will their bruised and battered emotions ensure the walls they have built remain intact?

This was at times an emotional roller coaster of a read. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you swoon and I think you will be hard pressed not to fall in love with Gabe.

I appreciated the care and details given in caring for children with special needs and I felt the author handled this well.

I was riveted to this story from the first to the last chapter and I cannot wait to read more in the series.

.

I was pretty excited about this one but I felt no connection between the characters, personally it just felt flat. The characters seemed pretty immature despite their age as well.

The book itself was just off, everything went too smooth until you just have to hit that part of the book where things fall apart, the only leading thing was Ken trying to get ahold of her but even then it went from zero to a hundred really quick. From there you get barely any suffering between the characters, the worst groveling ever and a quick pardon.

The only thing I’ll say about the ‘spicy’ scenes is that I read the first one and skipped the rest because they made me cringe. So did all of the mentions of the uncle, like that was just weird to me.

What a fantastic premise of a group of single dads supporting each other and this starts with the first Dr. Mark. I truly found this read (although I actually listened to it) to be a refreshing listen that had me actively listening and not giving it up until it was done. The book had some great sexy scenes and awesome feels and I loved how the characters are easy to relate to.

He needs someone to work with his son, she needs a job. They need to keep their hands to themselves.
I loved, loved this book.
Tori and Mark are my new favourite couple and little Gabe.
Honestly I really enjoyed Whitley's writing style, the fun banter, the cozy feels and vibe. The angst and holding my breath to see how it all unfolds towards the end.
Single Dad is in my top 5 tropes and there is a whole series that I am excited to read.

Ditching the Kiddie Saddle

Whitley Cox The Single Dads of Seattle bks 01-04

Victoria "Tori" Mae Jones definitely ended up bamboozled by her ex, Ken Snider. I really like how she and Dr. Mark Christopher Herron met at her 'Goodbye, Ken' celebration and the flub he kind of makes. Hehehe!

When she took the job, she knew it would be difficult to work for such an attractive man, but what she hadn’t realized was just how hard it would be.
-- Tori Jones

The chemistry is smashing between them, but the real winner is the relationship between Gabe and Tori. It's sweet. The way they bond is so adorable.

I wasn't impressed with how Mark handled himself after one particular incident. The incident was scary and could've ended very badly, but Mark took his fears out on Tori. I was happy that she stood up for herself though. It made me like her just a little more, even while I also agree that she should've done better. It's very realistic either way.

I read along with the audio book. The narrators are Allyson Voller and Zachary Johnson. Both are good choices and easy to listen to.

Wow. ❤️❤️❤️

"He’d missed coming home to someone. Someone he could share his day with, share his home with, share his life with. He missed the banter over the dinner table, the quiet chit-chat once Gabe was in bed as they just vegged out in front of the TV for the rest of the night. He missed falling asleep next to someone. He missed love."

This was a good start to the Single Dads of Seattle series. I love a good nanny story and while Tori wasn't really a nanny it followed the same idea. I do have to say that I was super annoyed with how Mark treated he and Tori's relationship. He could say she wasn't his dirty secret however much he wanted but that's not how he treated her and he didn't want anything to move forward. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

When they had their huge blowout fight and Mark was so incredibly thoughtless and cruel I wanted to just toss the whole man out. Luckily he came around, admitted to EVERYONE what a jerk he was, and basically had to beg for forgiveness.

Ok, Gabe was cute too ;)

Great read!

I read Whitley Cox's books backwards. I found her while reading the Single moms of Seattle series first and just started with the Single Dads series. Her writing style is definitely different in her earlier books - not as laugh out loud funny, bit still just fantastic reads. Her characters are wonderful, the stories cute, overall a great reading experience! Looking forward to reading all of them!

When Mark overhears a group of women celebrating one of their divorces, he's really intrigued. And when he sees the woman who's divorced, he's even more intrigued. Alas, the night ends with him offering her a job, one she desperately needs, and one he desperately needs her to take - as nanny to his on the spectrum son. But, their attraction soon leads to more than just a professional relationship, one that seems to be going along great until one mistake on Tori's part leads to Mark reacting in a really unacceptable way. Can Mark convince her to forgive him or is she doomed to being let down by yet another man?

I liked 3/4 of this story, right up until the point where Mark turned into a raging asshole. After that, I was done with him because as far as I am concerned, nothing he could have done or said would have been enough for her to forgive him and give him a second chance. But, luckily for him, Tori was in love with him and had a soft heart. So 4 stars because up to that point, the story was sweet, steamy and engaging, but a star off because Mark turned into an unforgivable douchenozzle.

4.5⭐️

Audiobook review- Single Dad romances have recently become my kryptonite so I was intrigued by the premises of an entire series of single dads. Whitley Cox is a new to me author and I adored this first book in the series. It a fun, sweet, sexy and emotional story. Mark is single dad to Gabe, a simply adorable little boy. He completely captured my heart. He is on the autism spectrum and is non verbal. Tori and Mark meet at a local bar the night she out celebrating her divorce. They hit it off right away and have fantastic chemistry. Then Mark learns Tori has has a background working with special needs children he hires her on the spot. Although they try hard to fight their attraction so not to cross professional lines it becomes impossible to ignore and their connection is sizzling hot and undeniable. I loved the pacing of the story, the character development and learning about the many side characters which hopefully will continue to see through the series. I am looking forward to Dancing with the Single Dad next. Narration- Allyson Voller and Zachary Johnson’s voices captivated from the very first chapter. Their storytelling had me feeling all the emotions their characters go through from humour, pain, heartache to passion and love. They did a phenomenal job bringing this story to life.

This is a standalone book with a super sweet HEA. Whitley Cox is a new author for me. She has created a great new world in this new Single Dads of Seattle series. The characters are well-developed and interesting. The story line was unique and engaging. I especially love that Gabe, the child in this book, is autistic because it shows us a different side to parenting. I absolutely adored Gabe. Mark and Tori are so great together. I loved watching their connection grow. The angst between them was super steamy. This book will make you swoon, laugh and cry. This is a great start to this new series, and I look forward to listening to the books of the other 9 single dads! Thank you to Pink Flamingo for gifting me this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Narrators Allyson Voller and Zachary Johnson were excellent! This is such a cute and fun story, and these 2 narrators definitely brought that to life. Their tones, pacing, timing, and vocal characterizations were spot on. I highly recommend the audiobook version of this book.

This is a story of struggles, pain and love, so much love. Tori was thrown at the curb by her cheating husband . She is out celebrating with her friends and meets Mark. He is gorgeous, sexy, kind and interested in her. Mark has a special needs child Gabe who needs a caretaker and Tori specialized in this type of profession, he offers her a job and their story unfolds. The story will show the struggles of parents of special needs children, of fathers without a support group of their own. It is a great story, that will have a hard time letting go of. I can’t wait to see what’s next for these amazing men!
Whitley is an amazing storyteller, like a pied piper that you can’t help yourself following. I volunteered to honestly review the arc.

Hired by the Single Dad by Whitley Cox is a contemporary single dad romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Allyson Voller and Zachary Johnson. This is the first book in The Single Dads of Seattle series and can be read as a standalone.

The book comes with a note "This book can be read as a standalone. It includes lots of steamy scenes, cursing, and of course as with all my books, this has an HEA and no cliffhanger or cheating. If you like single dads who take charge, this book is for you."

This is the first book of Whitley's that I have read and it definitely won't be my last. I absolutely loved the relationship that bloomed between Mark and Tori. I really enjoyed getting both of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

Allyson and Zachary did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would highly recommend this book if you love single dad romances, sweet romances, or contemporary romance.
