One shared look across a crowded club, and their worlds collided.

Their attraction had been instantaneous and hotter than the fire burning in his soul.

But Blake Stone didn't do relationships. Relationships meant emotions, and he didn’t have the kind a woman would want.

Or need.

Anger, greed, lust, bitterness, hatred—he had in spades.

But a woman like Gwen, she would want more. And if he wanted to keep her, he'd need to reveal his secrets.

Secrets that could send her running.

Because she’s playing with fire, and he knew damn well how badly it burned.

FIRE is a full-length, standalone, contemporary romance with a HEA. * **Contains sexual situations, violence, sensitive subjects, offensive language, and mature topics.*** Recommended for age 18 years and up.

Fire, by Sarah Curtis, is a full length, stand alone romance. For me, writing a review for a book that just blew me away, that hit me like a hurricane, that stole the heart right out of my body, is hardest of all. I worry, what if I can’t say the right things to convince everyone of this book’s awesomeness? What if my words aren’t enough? That is the case with this book. Because Blake and Gwen were everything. I hope you’ll read on and let me tell you about them.

Gwen Butler is almost twenty eight years old, works as a personal shopper for Coleman’s Department Store, and lives with her best friend, Allie. Gwen has a natural sense of style and loves her job. Most of the time. Gwen also believes in love. She wants the whole package. A man who makes her feel all those things you read about in romance novels, who loves her as much as she loves him. She’s dated. But no one has been the right fit. But then she sees him! On a night out with Allie, they go to a club they’ve never been to before, Fire, and she sees him across the room, their eyes meet, and she feels it all the way down to her toes.

sexy man in all black suit

Blake Stone, my dark, broody, broken, beautiful Blake. Notice the word ‘my’ here. Blake who has so many secrets. Who doesn’t do more than one night with a woman. Who doesn’t do feelings or romance. But when Blake was standing in his club and saw the woman across the room, he knew he had to have her. He didn’t know why, only that he wouldn’t be able to think straight until he had his hands on her.

“I want you, and I’ll do whatever it takes to get you.”

And so it begins. If there was a way of messing up in his pursuit of Gwen, Blake found it. He knew she was different, that he needed her in his life for however long he could keep her there. He knew in the end, he’d have to let her go, though, because he couldn’t be what she needed or deserved. But for now, she was his.

“Dive into the deep end with me.”
“What if I drown?”
“You’ll have to trust I’ll keep you afloat.”

Now let’s talk about how strong and amazing Gwen is. Blake hurt her time and time again. But she understood that this was all new to him. She let him know what was and wasn’t acceptable. And she gave him her heart, even knowing that he might break it in the end. Because he made no promises. But to her, it was a risk worth taking. Because having Blake in her life for however long she could have him, was worth it!

flames gif

Gwen can see a future with Blake. But he keeps himself closed off from her. She knows he has secrets, and unless he is willing to let her in, how can they move forward together? Blake will frustrate you, and make you love him at the same time. He is every bit a jealous/possessive alpha hero that had my heart from the first time he graced the pages of this book. I couldn’t put the book down. I think I was as obsessed with Blake as he was with Gwen.

man and woman embracing silhouette

All I can say in closing is that you need to read this book. That both Blake and Gwen are the kinds of characters I am always searching for in my reading. Don’t put this on your tbr list and forget about it. Read it now. I really think you’ll be glad you did. I do hope that you love them as much as I did. Thank you so much, Sarah, for these two. I can’t wait to see who you introduce me to next.

“She’d stolen his heart when he thought there wasn’t one left to take.”

Holy fireballs! I never expected this story to entail all the feels that this one did! I’ve read and loved everything by this author but I she’s never written a hero like this before and I absolutely LOVED him!

description

When a girl’s night out leads Gwen to seeing the dark man standing in the middle of the hottest club in LA, she’s disappointed that he’s gone in the next instant. A VIP invite opens the door for a chance to find him but instead, he finds her. She soon realizes that he’s more than just his good looks and she wants so much more from him than one night, but the mysterious Blake Stone has secrets that are interfering with them building anything meaningful.

description

Blake is definitely a man of secrets. Lots of secrets. Add in the fact he’s never been in a real relationship and he’s kinda all over the place as to how to act or respond to the issues popping up between Gwen and himself. Even as he pulls away, he’s drawn back to her time and time again. Ultimately, he’s going to have to make a decision to either share his past, or let her go completely.

”If he couldn’t allow himself to be with Gwen, he’d make damn well sure she was safe. And if his jealousy got in the way, so be it. Gwen was his. She belonged to him, even if he couldn’t claim her.”

Gwen was a strong independent heroine that knew when to stand strong against Blake and his actions. But she also recognized that this was all new to him, and allowed him a certain amount of lead way when he pulled an A hole move. I loved that she had that perfect combination of strength and softness.

description

Oh my gosh! This hero is so different than anything I’ve read before and I was consumed by it all. I love a strong possessive alpha and while Blake is certainly all that and more, his own struggles rode him hard and forced him into decisions that were hurtful to not only Gwen but to his own heart as well. There was never a doubt where his heart lay, even when he didn’t realize it himself.

description

This author is known for her easy laid back reads, laced with a bit of drama, and characters that you feel like are your friends. This book shows us an entirely new type of hero from her. He’s hard, broken, and sometimes forceful in his actions. His past has created a man unable to understand the simple steps of a courtship and his reactions to that uncertainty often cause serious issues between this couple. And through it all, I absolutely loved him.

”A fire filled his chest, but it wasn’t the kind that caused damage. Gwen had extinguished that fire that had burned in him. No, the flames that flared now were filled with hope.
Hope and want and love.”

The chemistry between Gwen and Blake is sizzling as are the smexy times they share. The pace is fast and never bogs down or repeats itself. I was amazed and shocked at the conflict and revelation that is finally revealed. Add in a great epilogue that takes us forward into time a few years, and I was a very happy reader.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a broken hero and some push and pull with their romance.

I am constantly on the lookout for books that have that intense, jealous and protective alpha but written maturely with a mature storyline. This is one of those books. I really loved everything about Blake and Gwen's story.

I usually gush all over the hero first but I think Gwen deserves first attention. She was amazing! I'm always frustrated with how heroines respond to heroes in certain situations, but not with Gwen. She reacted just as I wanted her to every time. Instead of having fits or demanding things or whining, she looked at the situation like an adult and gave Blake the benefit of the doubt. She was fantastic!

Blake is very closed off. He's broody. He's never put much thought into women. Until Gwen. He has a few frustrating moments but I'm glad they happened so that we could see Gwen shine. Despite him not knowing how to be in a relationship, I never doubted his feelings for Gwen. It made his coldness bearable.

I want more books that have couples like this. What a great read!

She’s too good for him, but at least he admits it…

A sign that I’ve read a good story is when I’m able to love a hero after he’s been a complete DOUCHWAFFLE. While I’m in the moment, he’s doomed and I’m convinced there’s no way I’ll forgive him. But, give me a good reason for acting like a tool, admittance of guilt, mixed with a substantial grovel, I can be persuaded to give them a second chance. If that grovel includes a declaration (one of the L's - like, love or lust, I'm not fussy) and a token of affection, you may even get a sigh of contentment.

Blake, the hero of the story, has had a pretty messed up childhood and bears the scars to prove it. To protect himself, Blake does not have relationships or give his hook-ups any indication that he’s looking for more than sex. He has no problems getting his needs met considering he owns a nightclub, is rich and handsome, but there is very little happiness in his life. Blake doesn’t plan on finding his happily ever after, but sometimes fate has other ideas.

Gwen is out with her best friend, Allie, when a very sexy man catches her eye. She can’t forget him, and when another opportunity drops in her lap to visit the nightclub again, she’s hoping for another glimpse. Imagine her surprise when he walks straight up to her and demands her attention. She hesitates but can’t resist his allure.

He’s keen, she’s keen and things are getting HOT!! Unfortunately, Blake has a lot to learn about treating his dream woman right. There are a few false starts before Blake and Gwen finally are on the same page. Blake’s strong personality makes him demand control and Gwen is quite happy to follow his lead. But, it’s not long before things start to go a little pear-shaped. Blake’s keeping secrets and they may ruin his only chance at happiness.

I’m not adverse to a hero admitting that the heroine is too good for him, especially after he has messed up. It takes a wee while before we get the full story of why Blake is the way he is. It’s heartbreaking and I’m not sure I would have been as strong as Gwen was in dealing with it all. I was even at times thinking that Gwen acted like a doormat and I hated that she kept going back for more. By the end though, she cracked through his barriers and I was convinced they were on the right path to happiness.

I really enjoyed reading Fire and loved seeing Blake and Gwen find their happiness together. There are plenty of sexy times to get the heart pumping and by the end, their connection jumped off the pages. There are times when I felt extreme frustration that Gwen allowed Blake back in after he'd hurt her, but their happiness together at the end made it all worthwhile.

If you’re a Sarah Curtis fan you will not be disappointed. Fire was an entertaining and sexy story that left me with a big, goofy smile on my face.

Spoilers ahead, rating changed on a reread

In trying to edit my original review I accidentally deleted it 🙄 but this is a reread.

On a night out with her best friend at the nightclub Fire Gwen sees a man she's drawn too. Before contact can be made ge disappears. To her surprise a VIP invite to Fire is sent in her name. Going to the club she meets Blake, the attraction explodes but they have a misunderstanding.
Blake is used to hookups only but the attraction he feels to Gwen is extraordinary. Realising she's nothing like his usual he sets out to date her, but the demons of the past rear their head and Blake ends things .
Weeks later Gwen is attacked and Blake sees he can't live without her, but to live with her he has to confess his darkest secrets.

********
The most important line in this book is

“All you had to do was talk to me.”
Because honestly that's all he had to do.

We get of course a tragic backstory that explains why he's an asshole today. He spoke to Gwen in such a way sometimes I wanted to box him in his mouth.
Overreacting to the simplest things
I love me a j/p unhinged H but not when he's basically barking at the damn h.
Gwen showed some strength sometimes but babyyyy that backbone needed shoring up desperately.
I've read some asshole heroes, heck I've loved some of them but Blake pissed me off.
Back and forth, cold shoulder bs.....then he'd turn around and be sweet.
First time they had sex he left her in bed no cuddles nothing, his apology states he's never been in a relationship so he hasn't ever cuddled after sex🙄
He had a bed in his club, mention is made of him picking up women a lot 🙄
At the end it was all for nothing because when he spills his tragic backstory he's met with complete love and acceptance from Gwen🙄

****"
No cheating
H was a manwhore before meeting the h
Lots of push and pull from him
Third act breakup, really should be second act because it happened about 3/4 of the way through for a couple weeks
My biggest issues were his past and the way he spoke to her
Mentions of a cult and rape of underaged girls

Well hot diggity damn! I went in cautiously & expected to DNF this one, but surprisingly, I liked it! Whoohoo!

Blake owns a nightclub and has a rough past. He has never been in a relationship and only does ONS – until he meets Gwen, a fashion consultant, and falls for her from first sight.

This is a safe read. There is no OW & some OM (a guy who Gwen works with has a crush on her & they go on one date). There is no sex scenes with OP and no past ex’s to obsess about. (Hallelujah!)

The angst in this story has to do with Blake’s past and the secret(s) which he is keeping from Gwen which prohibits them from moving forward in their relationship. And of course, because he is a novice in the relationship dept, he tends to screw up a lot and has to be taught relationship etiquette 101 which leads to much apologizing and remorse. (*sweet*)

There’s a lot of sexy times and a lot of breaking up/making up in this story which gives the reader a bit of whiplash mind you, but the great thing about it is that they never stay apart for long and Hero doesn't give up on heroine (even when he thinks she deserves better).

I loved how Alpha possessive Blake was and how at times he came across a bit stalkerish in his pursuit of heroine, but I must admit I liked the heroine more as she didn’t jump into sex with Hero right away but made him work for it. They took their time to get to know each other & had ups/downs in their developing relationship but it was all worth it & very entertaining for this reader.

“Are you into S&M or BD… um, I can never remember the rest of it.”

“BDSM, and no. I don’t get pleasure from pain. I do like control—as I do in all aspects of my life—but I wouldn’t call myself a dominant. It’s my way, not a lifestyle choice. So, while I do like the idea of having you at my mercy,” he pressed himself against her ass proving how much he liked the idea, “there won’t be any whips, chains, or crops to accompany it.”

“Oh, God.”
He’d correct her but his mouth was full and there was no fucking way he was stopping. But he’d tell her soon that he wanted no other name but his shouted from those luscious lips of hers.

“I think I owe you another apology.” At her raised brow, he sighed and then continued, “I screwed up again, and I’m not sure how to explain without sounding like an asshole.”

“To be honest, right now, I already think you’re an asshole, so you won’t be doing much more damage.”

“When I said I’ve never been in a relationship, I don’t think you fully understood what that meant. I’ve never gone on a date. Never spent any time with a woman longer than what it took to interest her in sex. And afterward, right afterward, they’d be gone. I’ve never had to do the post-sex conversation. In other words, I hadn’t known what to do with you.”

“Okay.”

“Okay? That’s it? I’m forgiven?”

“I can’t expect a miracle overnight. It’s a learning curve for you. So long as you don’t do it again, we’ll be all right.”

A small smile ghosted his lips, and he snickered while shaking his head.

“What?”

“I’m always surprised by you.” And now that he said that, she did see his look of wonder. “I don’t think most women would be as forgiving.”

“I don’t think you give women enough credit.”

“No. It’s you. You’re special.”

The mushy feeling was back in her stomach. She smiled across at him. “Then I guess you’re lucky to have me.”

His expression turned serious, and he was quick to agree. “Yeah, I am.”

“I’ve never made love to a woman. Never wanted to. But I do with you.” He buried his face in her neck, felt his lips against her skin, his chest expanding as he breathed her in. “I’ve never felt clean. I’ve never felt worthy of love. And I sure as hell never thought anyone could love the real me. That you do breaks my heart and mends it all in one breath.”

“I love you. I’ve never said those words before and meant them the way I do with you.” He pulled back out and pushed in slowly. “Don’t ever let me go.” “Don’t break my heart.”

“You’re a good man.”
“No. I’m not. But I am the man who loves you.”

“I won’t be the guy who stands in your way, I want to be the one who gives you the world.”

PS: It has a great Epilogue with 1 yr later, and yet another 10 yrs later! This one was PERFECT you guys! However, some folks may not like the way hero speaks/stalks heroine (especially in the beginning) & how closed off he is. If you continue to read, you'll learn the reason behind it & will understand his attitude.....

Read it really fast. Not because I was skipping but because there wasn't a whole lot there to keep my attention. Not sure where the 5 stars are coming from... Let me back up and explain:

In books like these, I expect to see emotional tension, I expect to see layers. While the books doesn't have major errors and it was easy to read (because it was so straightforward and SIMPLE!), it just lacked the special ingredient or magic of a truly good book.

The H seems to be a control-freak alpha. He has very little emotions and doesn't do relationships. We find out why toward the end. As we're waiting to find out, I would have expected more "connection" between the characters. Instead, it was just instant attraction and because she said no and he wanted her, he "chased" her. There really wasn't much beyond this that built the bond between the MCs.

The whole book read like a list. He did this. She did that. Several times he did things that assholish men do and she says, "you hurt me," and he says sorry and keeps trying. Seriously, the writing is like:

See dog bark. See cat run. Dog chases cat. Cat fights dog.

I mean, just TOO SIMPLE!! That's why it went by fast. I felt like the writing was trite, the sex scenes were bleh. And the connection, character development, plot, everything... amateurish.

Will not be reading more from this author.

This story just consumed me....like Fire! Do you believe in love at first sight? That you can see across a crowed room and find a sudden awareness that sinks deeply into your soul? I do.

description

The heroine, Gwen, is sweet and funny and modern. I love her spirit! She is genuine and beautiful inside and out. She is holding out for a real love. And she finds him across a crowed room and she feels him to her toes.

The hero, Blake, is everything that Gwen is not. He is darkness and secrets and control.

The moment their eyes meet they both feel the connection all the way to their soul. Soon they are consumed by a different kind of fire and darkness before the light.

The path of true of love is complicated and dark. Blake does not do romance. One night then the woman is gone. No touching allowed. Not his heart, not his body. But he is not a cold man. He burns inside with his dark secrets and with the need for a woman he knows he doesn't deserve.

Run to get this love story. I promise you won't be sorry. It is everything and a happy ever after.

I am so in love with their journey to forever. You will be too.

Gwen is a heroine that I'd love to have as a friend. She's so relatable. I really like that she's level-headed, smart, and savvy (fashion-wise and emotionally).

Blake, on the other hand, is a sweet asshole. He's infuriatingly sexy and somehow endearing. But then again, let me just say that I really like a lovable alpha-hole H and Blake totally fits the bill.

This was a great romantic read that I enjoyed very much.

Another hit from one of my favorite authors!! Fire by Sarah Curtis had pretty much everything I love in a contemporary romance. Gwen and Blake’s journey towards their happily ever after was filled with so many emotions, heartbreaking internal thoughts and sexy sexy times. Blake is the quintessential Sarah Curtis’ alpha male that I absolutely adore; a man who automatically knows who the woman is to him and does whatever he has to to claim her. Don’t get me wrong, Blake has some major issues that causes some bumpy roads, but with Gwen by his side I knew their ending was going to be awesome. Gwen was just plain awesome. I loved how she just seemed to understand Blake and give concessions to some of his butt-head actions. She was definitely not a push-over, she had such strength and compassion and the ability to forgive that I was in awe of her. And that ending plus the epilogues, the best ever!!! I loved this book so much and can’t wait for it to be released so everyone else can read such awesomeness!

With Fire, Sarah Curtis took me on an emotional rollercoaster. She delivered a beautiful, heartfelt, scorching hot, must-read contemporary romance with a strong heroine, a tortured hero, and plenty of sexy moments.

Gwen has a strength that I admire. Her ability to understand, to forgive, to love . . . is vast and beautiful. Because of this, Gwen has become my favorite of Ms. Curtis’s heroines.

Blake and Gwen were meant to be but these two definitely don't have an easy road toward their happy ending. They have to overcome obstacles and also inner demons, especially Blake in order to be together and happy. There were times I wanted to smack Blake so hard but then I would feel sorry for his inner struggle with his feelings towards Gwen and thinking he wasn't good enough for her due to his horrid father and his actions that occurred when he was younger. He was definitely a man worth suffering for because when he did admit to Gwen everything, it was like a blossomed thanks to her love and non-judgmental attitude and I loved that about her too :) An amazing couple, both with flaws who together make each other whole get their deserved happy ending <3

The author, Sarah Curtis has once again given us an incredible read and I can't wait for the next one :)

Another enjoyable read from Sarah Curtis. This one however is little bit different especially the hero Blake. He is damaged, demanding and possessive. At times I wasn't sure what I thought of him especially with his constant push pull but he did win me over in the end. Gwen I liked instantly. She is a very sweet heroine.

4.5 "I want more heroines like Gwen" stars.

Can I just say how much I adore storylines with heroines that act rationally and more like a PERSON rather than a character in a book. That was Gwen; a mature 20 something female with a real job that she actually showed up for and factored in her relationship decisions. She was so straightforward with no game play (and I mean that in such a good way). I. Love. Her.

Blake was the quintessential broody, mysterious and damaged hero who falls for Gwen almost against his will. From the very beginning you can see him making decisions that showcase his need for Gwen over his need to protect his secrets. Of course his progress and growth are haphazard and stumbling, but that just allows Gwen's character to really shine. The two of them together was a wonder to read and I really enjoyed every moment of it.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This book wasn’t bad, but the H was so emotionally immature. I *guess* he had a good excuse. I’ve been reading a lot of dark romance lately, so I felt like his background was an anticlimactic cop out for his closed off behavior. He was old enough to know better. I did like his character growth.

I also felt like this book did more telling than showing. A lot of the character growth was summarized.

I absolutely HATED how the h was so willing to give up her dream job *just* because the H finally opened to her after all he put her through. How desperate!

This book... was a mix for me because as much as i enjoyed Blake some of his actions annoyed me.. like how he spoke to Gwen over the phone (thats a personal no for me) that i won't excuse have better manners. I love Gwen and im suprised she put up with all that. And the break up/get back together i probably would have dropped him lol beside those i did have alot of positives i love how Blake was with his sister (even if not shown) he would do anything for her and i love that, the OTT alpha he has for gwen was also my fave i also shall forgive some of his asshole-ish moments due to his secret.. but like Gwen wish he would have told her sooner instead of pushing her away.

Chemisrty between the two was hawt and her showing blake how to be in a relationship was good..

Low angst, No ow drama slight om her coworker, drama, secondary charas, sexy times, was a manwhore for ons and no virgins

Sarah Curtis has done it again. I absolutely loved Blake and Gwen’s story. There was a little more drama in this one but it wasn’t too much. I had a feeling Blake’s story would be sad, and it was. He’s also smoking hot 🔥. Gwen was a great h too. I loved that she didn’t always get pissed when other women would. She saw through it but she also wasn’t a doormat. She stood up for herself when she needed to. I wish Sissy would get her own story and Allie too. It would be hard to do Sissy’s though, I think.

Sarah Curtis has done it again! She writes hero’s that you just can’t help but love, even if they’re being a douche bag at times.
And Gwen, our heroine is awesome! I love how she handled Blake when he was pushing her away. And how she helped him deal with his awful childhood. You can understand why Blake was so closed off after you read what he went thru.
Might I add I do love when the H gets all crazy jealous and possessive. Blake did that in spades. Not to the point you thought he was a psycho though. Lol. That’s due to Ms. Curtis’ fantastic writing.
The epilogues were perfect! Yes, we get more than one epilogue. :)
This book is completely safe. No cheating and no OW and plenty of very hot scenes.

This was a hot combustible sexy read about Blake and Gwen. Loved their instant connection. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't stop reading until I finished this thrilling sexy intense story. What Blake went thru was complete hell and how he turned himself around was amazing. Gwen was the light to his darkness. Loved this story and I can't wait to read more by Sarah Curtis.

Heroine was blinded by lust. She meets the hero, a club owner who is richer than rich. He invites her to his club and takes her into his office which is his fuck pad, complete with a bed and shower. She shows good sense and leaves, but she is betrayed by her body and gives in after he woos her by sending ostentatious gifts.

The first time they have sex is at his apartment where he doesn't keep any condoms because she is the special one who was invited to his actual home. He tells her he's clean and she let's him screw her without a condom. What is wrong with these author's still making it seem logical to believe a man who has a fuck pad in his hot club and screws woman after woman... never the same one twice and sends them on their way is clean. I would need an actual test to risk my health like that. Nothing takes me out of a story quicker than that.

So, we know he's a man whore with numerous ONS in his fuck pad. She's had a couple boyfriends and obviously not a virgin, but we don't know anything more than that.

Sarah does it yet again. She sucks you in to a story that basically keeps holding on until the end. These two were perfect for each other. Gwen was the kind of chick you want as a BFF. She was loyal and solid. She was funny and forgiving. I loved that she didn’t hold a grudge but she also wasn’t a doormat. She didn’t let Blake wall all over her. And she didn’t have crazy expectations. She met Blake where he was loved him for it. Oh and how I loved Blake. He was alpha to the core. You were sucked into his story wanting to dig deep and know more. Even when he was being a jerk you still couldn’t help but love him. It had heat and sweet moments.

Such a fantastic story and read.!

finished this book somewhere around June and i thought i should give a review! once again, the emotions and feels were all there even with the 3rd read! Blake has his own demons inside him and i loved how he eventually opened up to Gwen, showing all of him. Gwen was a wonderful and amazing heroine and i felt that she was 100% meant for Blake. highly recommended for anyone looking for an emotional, hot, gut-wrenching romance. 5 stars for me!

4 stars. This was a good book! Fire is Blake and Gwen's story. Blake owns the club, Fire, that Gwen's best friend drags her out to. They make eye contact across the club and can't get each other out of their minds. Blake pursues Gwen and, even though he doesn't think of himself as a relationship guy, the two of them can't stay apart. The more time they spend together, the closer they become, but Blake has secrets divulge before he and Gwen can be together for real.

This book was really good. The story was simple, but Gwen and Blake had great chemistry and banter. Gwen was a very likeable and relatable heroine. Blake was hot and mysterious. He had strong feelings for Gwen, but was holding back from letting her knows all of his secrets. He has no idea how to be in a relationship and he screws up a lot. He is jealous, possessive, and sometimes rude or bossy. But it is obvious to see how much he adores her and he learns along the way how to let Gwen in and to treat her the way she deserves. The two of them were magnetic and made a perfect match.

Overall, the book was entertaining and sexy with some angst, and moments of humor and sweetness. I enjoyed this book so much I had a hard time putting it down. I look forward to more from Ms. Curtis in the future!

This was a good read. Blake and Gwen were both likable. I was a little worried at the beginning that he was going to be a a$$hat and she was going to be ditzy. That wasn't the case. There was some back and forth about their relationship but nothing intolerable or annoying. Blake's back story was heartbreaking and unexpected! Nicely done Ms, Curtis. This was my first book by this author, I will read more from her I'm sure. I would recommend this book. At the time of this post it was on KU

I really liked this story and rate it 4.5 stars. Loved both the H and h, but the only aspect that detracted a bit from my enjoyment was the push-and-pull component. While I could understand it, I just felt it went on a tad too long. Other than that, this book hit the spot and will be one I reread when I want a yummy j/p hero and a classy heroine.

"Blake Stone."
God, he had a sexy name too.

Gwen's life is going fairly well. She shares an apartment with her best friend (Allie) and has a job (personal shopper) that she likes. Things are about to get more interesting after a night out at the hottest (ha ha) club in town, FIRE. She spots Blake and is smitten. Turns out the feeling is mutual. But Blake is not a guy who does relationships. However, when it comes to Gwen he is willing to try.

"I want you, and I'll do whatever it takes to get you."

Gwen helps Blake navigate through the expectations and acceptable behaviors when in a relationship. They are open with each other but Blake is not quite ready to share everything with Gwen. She tries to be patient reasoning that he will tell her when he's ready while he's thinking that in the end, he's no good for her. His secret is heartbreaking but Gwen is a loving woman who is just what he needs to heal.

"I've never felt worthy of love. And I sure as hell never thought anyone could love the real me. That you do breaks my heart and mends it all in one breath."

This is a standalone, sexy romance with an HEA that Gwen and Blake deserve.
