Reading Keys

Reading Keys offers a two-part introduction to beginning-level skills. First, all explanations appear in brief increments followed by a summary of key points. The chapter-ending Rounding up the Keys feature repeats all the key points so that students have several opportunities to review each skill or concept. Second, a variety of exercises ask students to perform increasingly difficult cognitive tasks—a step-by-step program designed to promote greater reading independence.

Provocative, high-interest readings cover such topics as the effect of placebos, P.T. Barnum's legacy of sensationalism, and the evolution of the Olympics. Also, the Digging Deeper section at the end of each chapter includes extended readings that follow up on issues introduced earlier and allows students to practice their reading skills on longer passages.

Each chapter contains a Review the Key Points test which students can correct using the answer key in the back of the book. In addition, 3-6 skills tests per chapter steadily increase in difficulty so that students can monitor their progress.
