I can't remember when the last time I enjoyed history so much.
Being from South Dakota, the story of Hugh Glass being attacked by a grizzly bear and crawling half-away across the state was taught in sixth grade. Well, guess what? It didn't happen like that at all. Was he mauled by a bear and left to die? Yes. But there was so much more to Hugh Glass. He was so much more than a hunter and trapper.
Bruce Bradley tells the story of Hugh Glass in such a way that it kept me turning pages. I did not want to put this book down. It was exciting and had me cheering then saying, "Oh no!" Hugh Glass gave his guardian angel a workout to be sure.
I imagine this book is geared toward guys but hey, I'm a woman and I loved it. I love history and I've always loved the story of Hugh Glass. I read "Lord Grizzly" when I was in junior high or high school and thought it was great. Then I read "Hugh Glass" and got a new spin on my education.
I know the author did his homework and to tell this story without sounding like a know-it-all and making it a true adventure was masterfully done.
This is an easy, easy five stars.

After seeing the film, The Revenant, I was curious about the man, the legend, and the times. This book by Bradley seemed to fit the bill to fill in some of the back story. I read it in a day. I am a big fan of stories of the "mountain men" and Indians and the challenges of the western frontier so thoroughly enjoyed the way the author wove a pretty representative story from the actual history available. Yes, it's rough around the edges and Bradley may have fabricated parts of the story to keep it moving and engaging but I'm glad I read it, especially as a companion to the epic film.

Decent story but not a good storyteller and the editing and grammar is not great. I’m sure there are many other better books about frontiersman out in the wild.

The book “Hugh Glass” is an amazing story that I would rate it a 5/5. The book takes place in the Caribbean at the tail end of the golden age of piracy and the early state of the American frontier. It follows the life of one Hugh Glass, also the main character of the new movie The Revenant. Glass’s story is one of survival against all odds, adversaries, and dangers.
Some people who reviewed the book said that the fictitious events in the book diverted attention from what happened, or caused it to make the story too unrealistic. However he did state that he had to fill in some of the blanks with fiction the best he could, to keep the story moving, and he did extensive research on the time period to make the fiction as accurate as he could.
All and all, I highly suggest the book Hugh Glass for anyone looking for a true adventure stories about one of the first great mountain men, or someone interested about the time period that will leave you wanting to know about all you can from the period and his life.

Hugh Glass written by Bruce Bradley takes place in the 1800’s with Hugh Glass being the center of the story. Hugh goes through a huge adventure starting as a merchant on the seas to a pirate, then an Indian and finally a member of a fur company. As you may know Hugh experiences many adversities such as the famous bear attack which leads him fighting for his life.
I rated this book 4 out of 5 stars because the author uses great syntax throughout the book. But, one thing I did not like about this book was the amount of grammar errors that were laying in plain sight.
Overall, I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because of the syntax the author uses throughout this book. I also subtracted the one star because of the grammatical errors the author and editor made. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a great adventure and who is also interested in what this time period was like for people back then.

This book just came out on Kindle and the story will blow your socks off.
Think of "Dance With Wolves" on steroids.
The plot deals with the savage treatment our indigenous Americans had to deal with. Again, I think of Kevin Costner's character in that movie who while a white man was an Indian at heart.
Aside from what our native Americans endured from the white man, metaphorically and literally, for that matter, the central character is attacked by a grizzly bear and left for dead. Then he is robbed by outlaws.
Without giving the rest of the story away, let's just say, the tale deals with survival, intestinal fortitude and resilience.
This is a very powerful book. Historical fiction at its' best.

I thoroughly enjoyed this true story of the life of Hugh Glass! Adventure seemed to find him, and he was always up to the challenge. He survived a pirate attack, two bear attacks, and numerous Indian attacks, to mention just a few hurdles in his life. The author keep the story interesting and moving along with just enough detail to put the scenario in perspective. There are several insights to life in the early 1800s, including ocean ships, pirates, Native American Indians, and the mostly unexplored Midwest USA. Highly recommended read. Four stars for the author and five stars for the life of Hugh Glass.

An interesting read on the story of Hugh Glass, who, if the accounts in this book are even mostly correct, lived one hard life. However the author's style was somewhat historical fiction, with quotes appearing to be verbatim and an omniscient narrator providing inner thoughts of many of the people in the story. I was looking for something a little different with more historical fact, but having said that, the overall story is fascinating and really an easy read.

Not the best written book, but a facinating read about Hugh Glass. A great book to read after seeing the movie and reading the book REVENANT which are a takeoff of the Hugh Glass story. Another great book about him is LORD GRIZZLY by Frederick Manfred which I intend to read again after I discover which box I packed it in for my move.

Hugh Glass's story is absolutely amazing and was riveting to read ! Bruce Bradley's rendition however, had me questioning the book's authenticity and historical accuracy. Too, the physical book contained typos and an awful cover I could have printed at home.

Absolutely amazing true story of one man's ability to survive events that would have killed most men. Just thought the ending could have been better written.
