Opal Cahill was raised as the only girl in a family full of rough and tumble men. They taught her to fight and survive and taught her to push aside fantasies, because reality is as harsh as the rough side of a cat’s tongue. But she could never let go of reading about adventures of life in the west and dreaming that she might one day become a Pinkerton agent, like her hero, Kate Warne. But when her father passes, she’s stuck living in Atlantic City with her cousin who sometimes has them living in rundown shacks and sometimes, high end hotels. Until one day, that odd lifestyle catches up with them both. When Opal must choose a place to go out west, she heads to the Pinkerton office in Denver in the hopes that they might still interview her though it’s months after they originally advertised they were accepting applicants.
Caleb Wade has just come back from going deep undercover. He returns to the Pinkerton office and runs into one of the most stubborn, frustrating, and interesting women he’s ever met. When he finds out that she’s not only his new partner but his new wife, he digs in his heels before he decides to treat it as another undercover act. Together the two travel to Ohio to help Archie’s good friend and owner of the Turner Theater deal with an arsonist who has already succeeded in burning down the theater once and threatens to do it again. Both Caleb and Opal must learn to get past their stubborn ways and work together in order to capture the person who threatens not only the building but the lead actress as well.
Lady Pinkerton detectives, their rough and ready agents, and a whole lot of excitement and romance! The Pinkerton Matchmaker series tells the stories of the women determined to bring criminals to justice, and the agents who win their hearts. Each book is a standalone story and they can be read in any order.
P. Creeden is the sweet romance and mystery pen name for USA Today Bestselling Author Pauline Creeden. Her stories feature down-to-earth characters who often feel like they are undeserving of love for one reason or another and are surprised when love finds them.
P. Creeden married her college sweetheart, who she also met at a horse farm. Together they raise a menagerie of animals and their one son, an avid reader, himself. Animals are the supporting characters of many of her stories, because they occupy her daily life on the farm, too. From dogs, cats, and goldfish to horses, chickens, and geckos—she believes life around pets is so much better, even if they are fictional.
I did my masters thesis on the use of women and african americans as spies during the revolutionary and civil war. One of my favorites to read about was Kate Warne. I was really excited to read this book since I loved reading about Kate Warne so much. Meet Opal. She has been raised by a pack of boy cousins and has not been taught how to be a lady. She dreams of becoming a member of the Pinkerton Detective Agency and when her cousin gets in trouble in Atlantic City - she heads west to try and capture the dream. Meet Caleb Wade. Full fledged Pinkerton Agent. He loves what he does. He is less then thrilled when his boss tells him he has to get married or face suspension. He and Opal are paired as a husband and wife team and sent on assignment to Ohio (my home state!!!) What will happen when they get there - will they figure out who is behind the theater arson? This book is a romantic suspense novella. It will keep you guessing. P. Creeden has done fantastic research and is historically accurate. I love the concept of Pinkerton Matchmaking. This is the first one in this series that I have read, but I will be going back and starting from the beginning. I was drawn in within the first few pages and could not put it down. If you like romantic suspense that keeps you guessing -- this is the book for you
I received a copy of this book through the author - All thoughts are my own.
An interesting concept, for a woman to become a Pinkerton agent they have to "marry" the agent who is training them. In this case it is Opal, who has already wanted to become an agent, and Caleb, who is not keen on this setup initially. They go to a theatre where there has been a case of arson orbital and there were now further threats. I enjoy the mixture of mystery and romance that makes for an entertaining read, each book in the series can be read as a stand - alone story so there is no need to start right at the beginning.
That is a twist for a book I'd never considered before. Opal grew up surrounded by make cousins and was treated like one of the boys. It was the perfect training to become a Pinkerton agent. There was just one hitch to the job: she had to marry the agent assigned to train her. This was a delightful story following their adventures to capture the bad guy.
Loved this book! Opal has a dream and most people think she's crazy. She wants to be a Pinkerton agent. This book is the start of Opal's dream. She meets Caleb, a Pinkerton agent who becomes more than a fellow agent. This book includes adventure, action, suspense and a little bit of romance. Great read.
Another great Pinkerton book by P Creeden. I really enjoyed the characters in this story. I loved Opal and how brave she is even when life seems unfair. There is humor with lots of action and some romance to make this a truly sensational read. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
P Creeden masterfully creates a story of romance and suspense. Opal is fulfilling her dream to be a Pinkerton Agent when she is paired with Caleb, an agent who is immediately enchanted by her, but doesn’t believe women should be agents. I was hooked from beginning to end. I highly recommend reading An Agent For Opal.
I received an advanced copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
Opal has always been a tomboy, free from her family she wants to be Pinkerton Agent. Caleb a senior agent doesn’t think women are fit to the job. Now these two stubborn people are forced to get married to solve an arsenic case. Can these two not just solve the case but also work out their marriage? Again an entertaining story in this great series. Love, suspense and humor, this story has it all.
This is a lovely addition to the Pinkerton Matchmaker Series, Caleb and Opal may not have the best beginning....but they agree honestly is the best policy and from there they quickly 'click'. Working together shows them just how well they are matched and just how stubborn they both are too! A sweet book which I read on Kindle Unlimited.
This is a very well written book that has drama, mystery, suspense and romance. I've never read a book about the Pinkerton Agency like this one but I really enjoyed it. I loved the ending. This is a stand alone book, so grab it today.
A Pinkerton always get their man and Opal isn't ant different. Getting off in the wrong foot soon changes when Opal and Caleb realize how well suited they are. Oh, they solve their case too!
Opal isn't what she seems. Caleb hasn't been as observant as he should be for a Pinkerton or he would have known something was definitely different. Can you identify what it is? You are going to enjoy this story.
Caleb was a Pinkerton Agent and his assignment was to be his temporary wife and Lacy Pinkerton student agent. He believes he will train her, teacher her and then get the marriage annulled. Wrong! You will enjoy reading this short but exciting story.
Such an amazing young woman. She was a breath of fresh air. Very astute and observant. Hopefully the other two agents introduced in the beginning of this story will show up later with their partners. A marvelous series. Love them.
Even though they were attracted to each other Caleb did not want to marry Opal for a job until he realized she would then have to marry another agent and he did not want that!- Babs
Cute story! Clean read, fun characters, and Opal is a breathe of fresh air as a heroine! Not pathetic, but well engaged and active in their investigation. Would have enjoyed even more pages to this story;), Was not quite ready for the end.
Undercover agents who have to deal with finding the missing pieces of a crime while getting to know each other and proving their sleuthing skills. Very entertaining
Another delightful tale in this wonderful series! I'm so glad the stories aren't getting boring or repetitive! I wish there had been more follow up of her cousin though!
Opal Cahill loved to read about her hero Kate Warne & dreaming of life in the West & becoming a Pinkerton Agent like her hero. She was raised as an only girl in all men & boys. When Opal’s Father died all she had left was her cousins, which were all boys. Opal grew up a tomboy learning how to climb trees, fight & everything boys did. She definitely knew how survive & take care of her self. They want her to forget about her fantasies about the West & be tuff, but she always loved to read her novels about her hero, Kate Warne. Her cousin Dudley took her under his wing so to speak and took care of her. Well he was a gambler & they were in a town where he got in trouble. He went back to the shack to get Opal & his money & clear out on the train in the morning. He told Opal no matter what to pretend she did not know him to protect herself. She was to go West & he was going to Atlanta. They were sitting in the train station separately & the gamblers spotted him. When they started beating on him she couldn’t stand it anymore. She pulled out her weapons and took action. Needless to say she put a hurting on them. She knock one out cold. They got on the train & went their separate ways.
She decided if she must go out west, why not go to the Pinkerton Office, even if it’s months after the ad she had was posted. She got to town got herself a room. Next morning she goes down office, but she is afraid to go in. She is marching back & forth trying to get up enough nerve to go in when Caleb Wade comes up & ask her if he can help her. Does she go in for an interview? Does she take the test? Does she pass the test? What do you think she does? They started a new rule, do you think she will go for it or not? I think this is a very good book as is all of Pauline Creeden’s books are. You will not be disappointed at all. I love books that go back to olden times so naturally I love this book. I have given my honest opinion of this book.
Opal sees her chance to become a Pinkerton Detective when her cousin tells her they have to run from Loan Sharks. She's not the pampered 19 year old you would expect. Caleb isn't happy with having to marry and train a new woman recruit but he decides he just has to deal with it. They are sent to Ohio to help a friend of Archie's. His theater has been receiving threats. Opal and Caleb have a very short time to apprehend the culprit before opening night. Can they work together to solve the mystery in time?? I enjoyed Opal and Caleb's story. A little disappointed to have a name repeat, however. We already had an agent named Caleb in #12. Apart from that, I found the story to be interesting without over the top and they made a good couple. It was a clean, sweet romance.
