“Believe me, hearing her kill isn’t something you forget.”
How far would you go to protect somebody you do not know? For ex-soldier Jackson and computer hacker Allister, partners in a private investigator firm, life was about to be turned upside down when Allister has a chance encounter with fifteen-year-old Chloe. At first a seemingly normal girl, they take her on as a client only to discover she has become the target of Alice, a paranormal entity they cannot hope to understand. Removed from their comfort zone of spying on cheating spouses and insurance fraudsters, they instead find themselves thrown into a supernatural world most people don’t know exists. Despite their combined skills, nothing could have prepared either man for what waited for them as they fight to protect Chloe. With messages of the future and long forgotten ghosts from the past revealed, both men brace themselves for an inevitable collision course with the Alice. Can fate be changed, or are some mistakes always destined to be repeated?
Currently living in Leeds. Work full time in transport industry. I write in my spare time. I like a variety of genres and try to bring them all to my own work. I class the Echo series as a paranormal thriller with a sci-fi twist. I live with my family and have no pets.
Hidden out of sight from our conscious world, the author crafted a tale that explored far into the reaches of paranormal phenomena. With each passing scene, the spellbinding horror of this well-written tale caused my pulse to quicken, just ever so slightly. The main protagonists that contributed to this horrific storyline were well-drawn. From beginning to end, this book was an easy read and comes well recommended.
Both thirty years of age, Jackson and Allister were partners in a private investigator firm. Taken out of their level of comfort from spying on cheating spouses, they soon found themselves abruptly propelled into a world of the supernatural. There was no manual to help them prepare for the unknown. To complicate the twists and turns with each passing scene was a fifteen-year-old year girl whom had become a target of the underworld. Made of good moral fiber, they felt obligated to offer her their protection. Not an easy task, considering they found themselves pitted against the forces of evil. Do or die, in the end, their survival hung in the balance.
Oh how I wish Goodreads had a .25.5.75star rating system. I want to rate this 3.75, it wasn’t quite a 4 star read for me but still extremely good. I was intrigued and engaged with this story and it gave me some very creepy vibes at times. I loved the development of certain characters, I thought they were done well and I enjoyed the friendships that developed through out this book.
''He knew what lay ahead and, in this instance, knowledge was power. He had the power to change things.''
I have received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I was pleasantly suprised by this book. I was in a huge reading funk for a few months; it kept taking me over a week - sometimes two or three even - to finish a relatively small book and I currently have multiple books only halfway done with the plan to finish them at a later time. But somehow this book grabbed me. I just sat down to read and read about 50 pages in one go, which was already twice as much as what I read on an entire day on average. I finished it in three days without too much effort and it made me feel so good. I think all avid readers can agree with me that a book is truly strong when it gets you out of a funk or slump.
Echo is a science-fiction horror taking place in Leeds, England. The main protagonists are Jackson and Allister, a private detective duo who stumble upon the supernatural world by accident when they receive news articles dated in the future, giving them the power to change the future. Crossing paths with 15-year-old Chloe doesn't make things any easier as she has become the target of an entity from her worst nightmares. Even though it's a horror, it's not too scary, as the horror really shows it's head in e.g. the gore-y murders and in Chloe's creepy stalker. I really appreciate that the author recognises that horror doesn't have to be super scary to be good. I really loved how the blend between contemporary horror, science-fiction and fantasy worked together. It kind tangles together in a balanced knot without any aspect becoming outrageous or underwhelming.
When I got offered this book, I quickly glanced over the premise, but I mainly decided to read this because it has autistic representation and the sequel has even more of it. It's quite hard to find decent SFF stories with decent autistic rep, so I grab my chance with everything I find. The author already informed me the representation didn't have a lot of page time in this book, but after reading the rep that was in the book, however small, it made my autistic heart very happy. I love how Richard didn't treat the autistic character like they are brittle or helpless. In fact, he was made into some sort of anti-hero type. I really cheer that on! Disabilities don't mean the character needs to be the good guy or treated with more care than the other characters and only people who live with them or close to people who do seem to understand that at this point, sadly. I look forward to reading the sequel as this character - his name is Freddy - is going to be one of the main characters!
Besides the autism rep, this book also has some great queer rep. One of the protagonists is very casually gay. With casually I mean he is just gay without it being a huge part of his personality or otherwise made obvious as if to add validity to his identity. He ALSO was not in love with his (straight) best friend. I am so tired of that trope and I am glad Richard Glenn didn't include it. I do love how the character's twin sister is also gay, as queer siblings are just amazing in several ways.
I highly recommend this book. It has a really strong story that just sucks you in, while not just including the best of the normal world, and also from the fantasy of science-fiction and the supernatural. This books is perfect if you are loooking for some adult reading without it being too adult and grown-up-y with thrill and twists. I really look forward to getting my hands on the sequel and really give Freddy a big hug.
Such an amazing read! It's suspenseful, thrilling, exciting, and it the first book I've read where I've had to put down for a minute because I was so mind blown by the story! DEFINITELY worth the read
A detective thriller with a supernatural/paranormal twist.
Jackson and Allister are private investigators who take on a new client who thinks she has a stalker and she's right but this isn't your average stalker!
A great read with good characters and a story that you can't wait to see where it's going to go next.
This is a cracking effort for a debut novel, covers several genres as well, detective thriller with a Sci-Fi twist. Easy to follow characters and find your self agreeing with some of their views. Good use of location as well and looking forward to getting round to the follow up.
This was a fantastic read. I devoured this from the beginning until the end. Such a page turner that you will not regret giving this a try. This is the first time I have read something from this author but it definitely will not be the last.
Unfortunately I do not know enough words to describe how brilliant this book is. I read the whole thing in one sitting, I couldn't put it down and it kept me guessing throughout, was incredibly well written and full of suspense. I'll certainly be recommending.
An enjoyable book with a lot of mystery and confusion that we don’t really get resolved in book one (hence my lower rating as it felt more like the introduction to the series rather than it’s own book which is fine, just not my favourite!) but definitely has me intrigued to see where it goes as the series progresses
This is one of those books where you find yourself stopping and thinking, "What just happened." It has good characters and takes you on a trip into the supernatural world.
It's a good read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series to find out what happens next to Chloe, Jackson and Allister.
This book was a truly great read :) full of interesting characters and a fast paced exciting storyline. This book is well worth a read and I can't wait to see what this author produces next! Big thumbs up from me and I shall be telling my friends about it too :)
Bravo! It is a very good book! Characters are very interested and kept me wanting to read it until the end. The wording and formatting were on queue and perfect. The story is well put together, and not boring at all. I will not say much because I do not want to spoil. But this is a definite 5 star book! Good on to the author!
Read this some time ago, it's definitely not something I would have typically gone for but i am so glad that I did! Really gripping and exciting without being cheesy or predictable with likable, realistic characters. Fantastic author and fantastic book, would definitely recommend!
