Fancy decides it is high time she learns to make lemonade from lemons instead of always making lemons from lemonade. As she learns to survive her past abuse, young Dr. Richard “Rick” Winslow manages to go back in time to find the beautiful young woman. Rick learns Fancy is married to another man. When her husband is killed at Yorktown, she finally admits her attraction for the handsome physician, as they fall in love, only to be ripped apart not once, but twice.

What a roller coaster ride - this was an excellent read! Once I started "The McCarron's Daughter," I just **had** to finish it the same night. This tale is set in the McCarron universe, and is rather different from previous books by this author. 'Fancy's Story' is a darkly brilliant, stark narrative about learning to thrive despite past physical and mental abuse, blended with fascinating glimpses of 1770's era Colonial life as detailed in the series.

The reader is drawn into political intrigues and family machinations as Sharon K. Middleton brings to life major events near the end of the American Revolution. She combines those experiences with modern commentary from three 20th century Americans who travel back in time to find love, and incidentally overcome their own inner demons. It's a fascinating tale of spiced-up history and the triumph of the human spirit, with a dash of sci-fi for good measure.

It was not easy for me to immerse myself in some very difficult societal customs and situations from nearly three hundred years ago. The main character, Fancy (formally Francesca) is written so sympathetically that I felt as if she were someone I knew. She is a child of her times - a woman of color, wife, widow, and mother. Born into privilege, the little girl's circumstances changed with the death of her adopted parents. Fancy learns to keep going despite horrific abuse by those closest to her. Along the way this young woman experiences loss and redemption, betrayal and renewal. We learn to care for her, and about those today who feel worthless and discarded by their families and an uncaring society.

This tale will be difficult for sensitive readers to get through; I suggest enjoying the previous stories first, then easing into this one (perhaps with a cup of chamomile tea). It will be well worth your time.

I usually don’t read much Romance. But this book has been recommended to me, and I’m glad I gave it a shot.
Sharon Middleton has created a story which pulls you into a rollercoaster ride of emotions on the first page and won’t let you go until you finish the book.
The story draws us into the 1770s American colonial era and follows its heroine Fancy through exciting, troubled, and sometimes shocking events. But no matter what happens to her, Fancy refuses to be a victim and always rises up again. She’s a survivor, and heroine readers will instantly fall in love with.
The author not only manages to describe the main characters in a very vivid way, but she also paints the time with its unique architecture, clothes and daily life so detailed that the readers outright feel pulled into this strange and at the same time familiar world.
It fits very well with the fact that the story is a time-traveler one, in which people from our time travel back in time to find their one true soulmate.
The premise reminds a bit of Outlander, but rest assured, this is a completely different story.
A must-read for Historical Romance fans!

This book is Horrible

I thought I was going to read a sweet Historical romance. This book is filled with rape and abuse to the point where I think the author has a serious mental problem. At one point in the book everyone in the house was getting raped except the heroine and it almost seemed she was jealous because she wasn't. Why do authors seem to think their readers are idiots? I know they like to sew you don't have to tell me 12 times they like to sew. I seriously doubt the sanity of anyone who said this is a good book. Also, did the writer count the words and realize she had enough? The way the book ended was unbelievable.

Ms. Middleton continues to do an amazing job. She continues to give us amazingly well researched entertainment. I anxiously await the next arrival.

So good you don't want to put it down. The third in a series keeps answering questions from the one before, delving deeply into each character. Leaving me wanting more.

Fancy has had a hard life and though sometimes it looks like it is getting better it just never seems to work out that way. She was raised at Belle Rose in Virginia. She is one eighth black. Her parents were never married but her father was always good to her. He died when she was young and then she was in the care of her oldest half brother. From then on life was hard. Dr. Richard Winslow came back in time and fell in love with Fancy but she was married to another. Follow the ups and downs in her life in this story. Through the abuse, the love, the children, the husbands and the family who all loved her dearly except for the oldest brother. Will Fancy ever find love and happiness?

I love the McCarron’s Corner books. The characters are vibrant, the history is spot on, and each story is told from a different woman’s perspective. I also found Fancy’s Story to be a darkly brilliant, stark narrative about a young woman who has been horribly abused as she is learning how to be, in Middleton’s words, ‘a bad ass survivor.’ I highly recommend this book. It is the #MeToo book of a woman in the 1780’s.

Good

I liked the characters. This book did not have the happy ending I love. The story had to much ugly action for my taste. It was unbelievable what all the main women characters had to live through.

Fancy

The story was so sad. What this one woman endured with abuse and rape is unreal. I hate the way the story ended.

This is my difficult book. Fancy grew up in an abusive situation. She must learn to love and accept herself before she can find the love of her life. Not a typical romance, it deals with some gritty subjects which are upsetting to some readers. Even do, it won the 2019 Pencraft Award for Historic Romance, and the 2020 Texas Best Historical Romance book award from the Texas Authors Institute of History, Inc. I recommend reading Diary of the Reluctant Duchess right after The McCarron’s Daughter because Fancy will get her forever love in it. Her story will continue in Path of the Guiding Light, which will release 12-23.
