Jean de Brunhoff was a French writer and illustrator known for co-creating Babar, which first appeared in 1931. The stories were originally told to their second son, Mathieu, when he was sick, by his wife Cecile de Brunhoff. After its first appearance, six more titles followed. He was the fourth and last child of Maurice de Brunhoff, a successful publisher, and his wife Marguerite. He attended Protestant schools, including the prestigious L'Ecole Alsacienne. Brunhoff joined the army and reached the front lines when World War I was almost over. Afterwards, he decided to be a professional artist and studied painting at Academie de la Grand Chamiere. He married Ceccile Sabourand, a talented pianist from a Catholic family, in 1924. Brunhoff died of tuberculosis at the age of 37. After his death, Hachette bought the printing and publishing rights to the Babar series, and ten years later Jean's eldst son, Laurent, took on his late father's role of writing and illustrating the series. The first seven Babar albums were reprinted and millions of copies were sold all around the world, but they were all abridged; they had 30 pages instead of the original 48. The Babar books are thought to be a way for Brunhoff to share himself with his family. Many people did not notice the 10 year gap, as Laurent also showed exceptional talent in drawing elephants. De Brunhoff and his wife are buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
Book title and author/illustrator: ABC de Babar by Jean de Brushoff
Professional Review #1: Publishers Weekly A pair of Laurent de Brunhoff books starring everyone's favorite elephant make their reappearance. Babar's ABC (1983) uses full-page and panel vignettes to cover all 26 letters, starting with the airport, Alexander and Arthur, proceeding through Babar and Celeste, and ending with Zephir the monkey zipping up his sleeping bag. Scenes of the circus and firefighters coming to the rescue add to the excitement. Babar's Little Girl (1987) begins with the birth of Babar and Celeste's new baby, Isabelle, and follows her through her first big adventure, in which the family thinks she's lost, but Isabelle knows right where she is. ( Apr.) (PUBLISHER: Harry N. Abrams (New York ;) (London:), PUBLISHED: 2001.)
Professional Review #2: Random (Random House Children's Books) ISBN 0-679-86842-9 (3) K-3 series. 1936. Each letter of the alphabet is shown in upper and lower case, both in print and in script. The accompanying illustration reveals characters and settings from the Babar books featuring items that begin with that letter in French. An amusing mix of French culture and elephant culture provides interest for adults and children beyond the usual alphabet-book format. Outdated items such as golliwog dolls and Native American dress-up costumes are included. Word lists in French and English.
A brief book summary: This ABC book goes through the alphabet and pairs the letters with pictures that start with the same letter as well as some small signs on certain pages. The illustrations depict elephants doing daily activities of normal people.
Personal response to professional recommendations: I agree with both of the professional recommendations. I think that this book does a good job of giving examples of the different letters and shows a significant amount of varying examples. Thoughtful consideration of literary merit and picture book analysis using course vocabulary This book, although originally in French, gives a complete list of the pictures that are throughout the book and also gives their English translation. I believe that this book has a lot of literacy merit and has the ability to aid children in learning the alphabet while promoting French as well as English.
Description of possible instructional application: I believe that this book is perfect for chidlren from preschool to 3rd grade. I think that it gives a good introduction for preschoolers to the alphabet but as they get older, it also has a lot of strong vocabulary that would be very useful for the children.
Not only does this ABC book introduce the alphabet in capital and small letters, it includes one or two examples of the featured-letter words in separate panes at the bottom of the page with other illustrations. The large and small drawings are visually interesting with bright colors and a lot of action. It is useful for children who are just learning the alphabet, as well as older children who will see how the words can be used in a sentence.
