Finally, some direction for Supergirl after her lackluster new 52 book and Steve Orlando's awful turn on the character. Spinning out of Action Comics #1000, where Brian Michael Bendis unveils that the death of Krypton was planned and not a natural disaster, Kara heads to space to find some answers. She brings Krypto along as backup and picks up a Coluan version of Starlord along the way. Something about this book reminded me a bit of Amanda Conner's Power Girl book. Maybe it was just Kevin Maguire's expressive art. Maguire was a nice surprise on art with the capable Emmanuela Lapacchino and Doc Shaner filling in.

This feels like a fall of from previous volume but I guess it was alright like we have Kara on the search for the circle, people who killed Krypton by sending Rogol zaar and then we see her meeting Hal, going to OA and meeting GLC to find more about the axe and the circle, battling them sorts of and escaping and coming to the ashes of where Krypton used to be and fighting Splyce, Harrky Hokum and meeting Omega men and now on the run! Also meeting some rip-off of Star-Lord which was meh but seems like its building to a big Supergirl vs Circle fight which should be awesome and the art was okayish I guess so yeah a tie in to the larger Bendis story but does well to stand on its own!

This is not Kara and this a bad book.

World: The world building is meh. It builds upon the idea that Bendis put forward in Action Comics 1000 and dives into the history of Krypton and the world building builds from that. You would expect more lore and history and new pieces in place but that's not the case here, for the six issues that this book has to world build a lot of it is used to have cameos from different parts of the DCU and nothing of substance is created here for Kara to play on. The pieces we do see are so out of character it feels pointless and wrong.

Story: This story fails, it fails really hard. The first problem is a character one and it's the main character, Kara is not Kara in this book and everything else that happens in this book is because of this character and so the story itself falls apart. I will get into the character below but I will tell you how the writing is also pretty terrible. The story, the main crux of this first arc, is the idea of Kara going to find out if Krypton was really destroyed not by a natural disaster but by someone or someones and that's an interesting jumping off point for the story but it spends a lot of time not really doing this or if it is it's doing side mission and mindless very transparent filler quests to bulk up this story. The entire section on Mogo makes no sense because of how Kara acts, it's illogical, it's jerkish and not at all what Kara is and to make this a two issue story for that really is a waste of time and pretty much a character assassination. Then there's the stupid addition of fake Starlord and and things with the space Hitler which even rolls your eyes even more, this book is directionless, it's stupid and can't even get to the main point of the the story and the characters are just sooooo out of character and stupid.

Characters: Wow this is a really really poorly written Kara Zor-El, I though Orlando was doing a bad job but wow this is way way worse. I can understand that Kara is young and impulsive, but she's not mean, she's not a jerk and that's what we have here, an selfish, self centered, impulsive, entitled jerk character that is pretty much everything that Kara is not. We need to buy into this premise for this entire story to work because Kara gets into situations because of his poor character writing, it's really really bad. Then there's the forgettable not Starlord and space Hitler and a villain I don't even remember anymore 5 mins after reading this book, they are all pointless, and endless busy work. Kyle and John are stupid and idiots in this book and that's really a disservice to them. This book really disrespects everything about these characters and it's just sad.

A really bad arc because clearly Andreyko does not understand who Kara as a character really is. Skip this book, it's not worth your time and money.

Onward to the next book!

Oh look a solid Supergirl story! Yay!

After reading too many awful Orlando comics I decided to just skip his run. From reviews on here and in general, that seems like a good idea. But I was pretty excited to try this Supergirl run since it's By Marc Andreyko, and his Manhunter I'm reading now is great. So Kara just helped Superman take down one of their biggest threats. Now she's on a mission to find out what happened to her people on a space adventure.

I really enjoyed Kara here. She's still gets pissed quick. But that's because at her age it makes sense. i also love Krypto and Kara. So glad we got a doggie on our adventure. I also like this feels like an adventure through space instead of another boring story for Supergirl to fight another female/over the top male villain. The story itself though isn't amazing. Pretty predictable on the big bad, and we already know Supergirl will save almost everyone so the cliffhanger kind of just there.

Saying that, it's not amazing, but it's good old space fun. Kara is a good lead and I'm hoping this series continues to improve.

"Spinning out of the events of Man Of Steel" are never a good way to start a sentence, but I'll admit, I'm glad I checked out this era of Supergirl. While I enjoyed the previous creative team mostly, this one seems to have a more solid direction, even if it does use Brian Bendis' horrible mini-series as a springboard.

Supergirl heads out into space to discover the true secret behind the destruction of Krypton, complete with an 'evil' version of the old Quintessence super-team, Rogol Zaar's giant axe, and Krypto, who's really all you need anyway. There's some clones, some Omega Men, some Green Lanterns, and a new friend who's basically a cross between Indiana Jones, Star-Lord, and Vril Dox. Kara's characterization feels a little off compared to the previous run, but is much more in-line with what most people will associate with Supergirl from previous iterations and the TV show, so that's probably a good move.

Kevin Maguire's the artist for most of this volume, which is a nice surprise, although he doesn't manage to pencil everything (which is fair, I suppose). The fill-in artists are all more than acceptable though, with Emanuela Luppachino and Evan Shaner popping in to say hi. Even if the story's sometimes a little flimsy, the art is always great.

Supergirl's new direction isn't massively interesting, but it's a good starting point for some intergalactic adventures and a shot in the arm to a title that didn't really know where it was going before.

Conspiracy

A very good Supergirl story. This reminds me of the Woman of Tomorrow story. Supergirl in space and on a mission across the cosmos.

After discovering Krypton's destruction might now have been an accident, Kara takes on the mission to find the truth and does not care who or what gets in her way, but how high foes the conspiracy go?

I like that the differences between Kara and Kal El are highlighted. Especially their temperaments and ides of justice. However, neither one of them will stand by when innocent lives are in danger. A great start to this story arc. I can't wat to see what happens next.

Really interesting take on Supergirl, launching her to space to untangle the mystery of Krypton's destruction. With Krypto. And with Kevin Maguire in the art department. Really fun to read and Andreyko manages to give her a unique voice as a character. Really surprised by this

Rogol Zaar is almost everpresent in the pages of Superman lately, but let's not forget that Kara was also from Krypton, and she seems to be having a harder time letting go of the possible tragedy. She makes the decision to leave Earth, going out into space to search for the truth. Unbeknownst to many that she has it, she takes Zaar's axe with her.
Her first task is having Hal Jordan use his ring to scan the axe to see with the Green Lantern databases know. The scan comes back with "Information Redacted", leading her to believe that the GLC must have info. Using a spaceship, a solar collector suit, and taking Krypto with her, she heads off to Mogo.
Acting odd and not sharing information with the GLC is not a good way to get them to allow you access to their vault of info, though this is exactly what Kara does. Almost causing an incident and getting more than one Lantern angry with her, Kara sneaks into the vault and accidentally comes across a recording of Appa Ali Apsa, made before his death. He confesses to having knowledge that an organization called the Circle was responsible for Krypton's demise, and reveals the existence of several data stones storing the full truth (they kind of look like Infinity Stones). Supergirl starts a hunt across the galaxy, interacting with Z'ndr Kol (who looks like a green skinned version of Star-Lord).
Arriving at the ruins of Krypton, she finds a armored purple skinned warrior guarding it by the name of Splyce. They fight, but are captured by Harry Hokum, who plans to do testing on her so that he can create an army of Kryptonian clones. While Kara is able to begin to escape on her own, she is assisted by the Omega Men. The Volume ends quite suddenly, right before a huge fight.
Will Kara be able to get away? Will she meet back up with Z'ndr and Krypto? What other leads will she be able to follow as she searches for the data stones?
Got me hooked again, Supergirl... Andreyko certainly knows how to craft a story. Will we finally get the definitive answer on what happened to Krypton?
Recommend. Another great title in this most recent batch of DC redesigns, and a great place to jump on if you aren't already reading this title.

Synopsis: Kara decides to leave earth in pursuit of answers behind the true cause of the destruction of Krypton. Superman tries to convince her not to leave, but realizes that he is being selfish in wanting her to stay because Lois and Jon went off with Jor-el, leaving him alone. He does send Krypto with her to help on the journey. Kara starts with Rogol Zaar's axe and has Hal Jordan scan it, but the schieves have been sealed, which Hal notes has never happened to him before. Kara sets off for Mogo.

While breaking into the Green Lantern archives, the axe glows with this red energy and Kara is confronted by Green Lanterns. Kara gets sucked into this pocket dimension by the axe and witnesses the recording of a former guardian named Appa Ali Apsa. He confirms the existence of the Circle and gives Kara a stone that will lead her to more of his recordings with the answers she seeks. With the help of Mogo, Kara and Krypto escape the Lanterns.

A member of the Circle named Gandelo sends someone called the Spy after being informed by someone on Mogo that Kara is still in pursuit of the Circle. Kara heads to a dive bar on the outskirts of the galaxy and starts a bar fight when she asks about Zaar. The fight stops when the bar goers realize Kara has Zaar's axe and Kara picks up a Coluan named Z'ndr Kol (think green Han Solo). There's another crystel at the bar and once they're back on the ship, it transports them to Krypton, or what's left of it.

She's attacked by a creature named Splyce and is captured by Harry Hokum, self proclaimed emperor of the Vega System. Hokum intends to clone Kara's Kryptonian cells to make an army to destroy the Omega Men and other insurgents. Kara runs into the Omega Men and gets roped into helping them destroy some kind of undetermined power source. That story ends with them being cornered by Hokum's men. There's a brief story about Z'ndr Kol and we know that he salvaged an old piece of metal from a Kryptonian outpost with the symbol of the Circle on it.

Review: For the most part, I think this is a fun volume, despite the heaviness of the why of Kara's journey. If you're looking for the rest of the follow-up to the Man of Steel, this is the book you want to be reading. It's not totally satisfying on questions around the Circle - we pretty much know as much as we did before, but we have some names. Assuming they're new characters, though, that doesn't tell us much. I just hope that they're the villains the writer is making them out to be.

I thought the way Marc Andreyko wrote Kars was on point and had the right amount of humor and seriousness blended in. This was an important aspect for Andreyko to nail because for a while, Kara is really the only character we have to play off of because Krypto doesn't talk. She carries the story quite well and I liked the misunderstandings she is constantly plagued with. Also, Kara goes through several outfit changes and that was kind of fun - the black and red costume was definitely my favorite though.

I'm not sure I trust K'ndr Kol, but I liked the edition of his character and it didn't go unnoticed that he is Coluan like Brainiac 5. He and Kara don't have much time to interact before they get separated, but I'm looking forward to it in the future because I think they might challenge each other in good ways. It's nice to know someone at DC gives a shit what Krypto is doing, too.

It's ok. I think the art gives it the appearance that it's for the younger readers, but it's not. I wouldn't suggest reading this without reading the Man of Steel and probably the Rebirth Supergirl run to get a grasp on this version of the character. Honestly, if you have some spare time, give it a shot, but it's not going to be for everyone.

Such an improvement over the Rebirth stories. At last, Supergirl has a mission! Taking off for deep space with Krypto in tow, Kara teams up with a cute Coluan (ala Brainiac 5 but not Brainiac 5) to unravel the mystery of what really destroyed Krypton. I've loved Kevin Macguire's art, especially his facial expressions, since JLI so it's really great having him on board here. At times the dialogue is a little corny and jarring. In Rebirth, Kara was so alien she wouldn't even use contractions. Now she's gone full Alicia Silverstone with her expressions. But she feels like a warmer character. The book ends on a cliffhanger with the Omega Men (cool!), with a holiday short story tacked on right after. Looking forward to the next collection. Thanks, DC!

This is a very well done graphic novel that builds off of what Brian Michael Bendis is doing in the Superman books, and gives Supergirl a whole new story arch that's very fascinating and enjoyable to read. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this book series.

Fun space adventure. On my first read, as the issues were first coming out, it seemed lackluster with not much going on in each individual issue. I know now it’s a drawn out story with the focus on adventure. On a side note: Ima sucker for new costume changes and meetings with other space faring heroes. So while not very epic or original, it hit all the right notes for me.

Continuing from events in Man of Steel
Conclusion in Supergirl vol2.

I don't know this was all right.
I owned the first issue of this back when it came out. I was still fresh to collecting comics and I'd become more interested in exploring new characters that felt familiar but weren't from the comics like Supergirl. I actually enjoyed that first issue quite a bit, but it kind of stayed consistently okay from there.
Coming out of the DC Rebirth era, there were plenty of books that were restoring the old continuity, and not only that but bringing back the heart of the DC Universe. For too long the Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Green Arrow mythos in particular struggled to feel like the classic counterparts that the general public know and love.
So it was for Supergirl. She'd been a red lantern, wore the atrocious New 52 costume with like underwear and weird lines going down it just looked awful. Her whole personality was just "I'm angry muscly girl" instead of the Kara we know and love. Rebirth attempted to fix that, and while I haven't read that series (I've been meaning to), I've heard mostly bad things.
This switched things up a little, made Supergirl a fun book worth reading. After Tomasi and Gleason were forced out the Superman writers room in place of Bendis, I feared that the Superman mythos was going to be put into another dark age. After only 2 years of glorious Superman fanfare, they were going to throw it all away. They kind of did, but thank god they didn't touch most of the super family and it was just Jon and Clark.
Story here is pretty simple. Conspiracy involving the death of Krypton may be linked to Kara's father, some of the guardians, and a whole society of space politicians that took interest in the genocide of Krypton. I don't know, I'm pretty exhausted by the death of Krypton stories. Obviously Krypton's integral to each Superman family member in some way shape or form, but I hate that everything has to be planned out by some evil villain. Krypton is far more interesting when its a society that denies its impending doom, destined for failure.
I also don't love that both Kara's and Kal-El's dads are secretly villains or darker and all this other stuff. That was easily the worst part of the Rebirth era was bringing Jor-El back as this bitter grandpa figure. It distracts from the interesting characteristics of Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van by making either of them an edgelord villain.
While I had fun with the action, I don't think I'm going to continue this book. The art is meh, the action's cool, but the story doesn't capture my attention and its all the issues that I had with Pre-New 52 Superman comics of things I don't care about being brought up constantly about Krypton or that part of the DC Universe. Thank god for Tom King's Supergirl run for setting the record straight on Supergirl, hoping we keep that trajectory for the foreseeable future.

"The Killers of Krypton" is a good book. It's also different in that, with this story, Krypton was attacked and destroyed by an outside force rather than a natural disaster. This was a good twist and it led to some good mystery over who was behind it all. I like how Supergirl's journey to find answers was written.

Another difference is the way that Supergirl was written. She is not bubbly as she was during Steve Orlando's run and, unlike that run (and the CW show), she is quite different than her cousin. At the same time though, she isn't as hardened or standoffish (both traits are understandable given what she went through) as she was in Michael Green's run. Her personality is somewhere in the middle. She's tough and settles problems more with her fists. At the same time, she also has a kind heart, thinks quickly on her feet, and has a warmer bond with her cousin (whereas in Green's run, it was much more strained). While I enjoyed both Green and Orlando's runs, I also like these changes. They all make sense given what she's been through and, based on the Supergirl comics I've read so far, embodies the essence of her character (especially her determination, passion for justice, light within her heart, and differences with Clark in how they approach situations).

The action and art were good. I enjoyed seeing the battles throughout. They were illustrated well. The coloring and character designs were good also.

So was the story overall. As mentioned earlier, I enjoyed reading Kara's search for answers. It took her to different planets. The plot kept me intrigued. Nevertheless, I'm not a fan of how this one took off from a crossover. Crossovers are fun, and this story better explained the crossover than previous stories have, but it seems like - at least with many of the Supergirl comics that I've read - a lot of the stories pull from crossovers and I personally prefer more solo stories (at least for a Volume 1 like this book).

Still, this was a good read. I like Kara's characterization. I also mostly enjoyed the plot. The action and art were cool also.

I understand that amlost anything feels more thrilling than the Rebirth issues. But that doesn't make Andreyko's run on Supergirl memorable. The character is "exiled" in space, I guess that so she doesn't interfere with Clark's adventures. I wouldn't be too bothered with this idea if, kryptonians didn't lose their powers as soon as they leave our Solar System. Because that makes this comic about the galactic adventures of a girl dressed like Superman who occasionally gets to have some superpowers and her dog. The first three issues still caught my interest: some kryptonian lore, Green Lantern Corps running around... It was amusing. But as the issues go by, it starts to feel really messy. I'm not sure there's even a plot that is worth following and characters just seem to show up without too much explanation. It feels really chaotic.
What I like from this book is the artwork: the color feels really classy and Kara... the art matches the faint sense of humor that she guests in this run. Of course, some of the covers are... a little bit insulting, as a woman (mostly when you remember that these comics are meant to be read by young girls), but they are not a goood example of the kind of work that one's gonna get inside.
In the end, amusing Supergirl adventures in space. But really far from memorable. Yes, this is an improvement if you compare it with Rebirth. But I don't think it's better than The New 52 Tamaki's short.

In a clean break from Orlando's run, Supergirl heads out into space to solve the mystery of Krypton's destruction. This initially brings in the Green Lantern Corps in a section that works rather well, although how much it feels like Supergirl, rather than Green Lantern is perhaps debatable. From there we move to other spacefaring adventure, which is less engaging, but does at least provide a different vista than we normally get. It's an improvement over the often lacklustre preceding volumes, although there's none of the usual supporting cast and we really are starting from scratch. A couple of isolated short stories round out the collection - one filling in the background of a new supporting character, and the other a routine Christmas story.

It's enough to make me want to see where this is going, at a point where I would otherwise have dropped the line, so things are looking up even if I'm not really excited about this yet. And Andreyko is, frankly, a better writer than his predecessor (nice artwork, too). But, seriously, you had to include Krypto the Super-dog?

Recomendo!

Picking up directly from the events of The Man of Steel, this first Supergirl volume sees its titular hero jetting off into the void to figure out why Rogol Zaar destroyed Krypton. It's a straightforward narrative that allows Supergirl to show real emotion in pleasantly goofy alien settings.

I liked it! It's not complex and features silly tropes like a knowledgeable, omnipotent being sending Kara on a quest for gems rather than just giving her information. But sometimes the quest narrative works, and it seems like Supergirl will benefit from the straightforwardness. The art is pretty great throughout - I'd only knock the strange, one-shot add-ons to the final two issues in this volume. I think they're just tacked on for laughs? Distracting.

One thing about the character of Supergirl, is that she is definitely in the constant shadow of her cousin. I think part of the problem is that they are very similar in their approach at times. This book starts off great with the notion that while they are related, they are very different people.

As Kara looks for a way to get revenge for Krypton's demise, Kal tries to talk her out of it, opting for a more diplomatic approach. And this is where the characters diverge. Kara is not giving up her her revenge that easily and embarks on a journey to find out more information on the destruction of Krypton... to make the people that are culpable pay for what they did.

Which is pretty badass. And the fact that she doesn't follow Clark's advice just adds to her own characterization. I very much enjoyed this about the character and made me enjoy the volume that much more. I think Marc Andreyko is on a good path here and I'm along for the ride.

Decent story. I was put off by the modern characterization of Kara as something different to Kal, as opposed to being a hero-worshiping teenybopper with his powers. That, however, being related to the fact that I'm now an old coot, I'll have to put down to the world having moved on since I was a little boy.
The story is compelling, even chilling in places, given that it offers a possible new narrative for Krypton's destruction, the tension broken in places by the presence of Krypto, and that of a Coluan who, despite his cybernetic arm and "advanced" intellect, cannot keep himself from getting into situations reminiscent of Abbott and Costello.
More I cannot tell without giving away everything but the ending. Enjoy!

First off, Goodreads users, Dan Jurgens didn't write most of this volume. He penned a short, Christmas-themed story for the end of the book. Most of the book was actually written by Mark Andreyko.

Andreyko is actually why I gave this Supergirl a shot. I really have enjoyed a lot of his part work, and with Kevin Maguire on pencils, this could be good. And the end result is...fine. Supergirl, mad at discovering some alien is responsible for the destruction of Krypton (as seen in Superman's book), goes into space with Krypto to get to the bottom of the conspiracy that decided Krypton had to go. There's not much progress there, but Supergirl does pick up a Colun archaeologist as a passenger, visits the Green Lantern Corps, and teams up at the end with the Omega Men. The volume actually appears to end in the middle of a storyline (not counting the aforementioned Christmas story), and I find I didn't care much one way or the other if I went any further. I didn't hate it or love it. That actually describes my general feeling on Supergirl most of the time anyway...

Terrible. Just terrible.

Not sure where to start. It's not a volume 1, to begin with. It starts in the middle of an ongoing story and does a non existent job of trying to fill the reader in on what happened in previous volumes. What were the previous volumes? Who knows. A lot of stuff has happened, none of it makes much sense.

The dialogue is dull. The humour is non existent. It's just... look, it's just bad. I know I'm not the biggest mainstream comics fan in the world, but really, the quest for really good DC stuff continues. Avoid this tosh. Volume 2 looked even worse.

it was alright?? there was nothing special that set it apart from any other supergirl comic i've read but it wasn't in any way BAD. genuinely just mediocre. the green guy was annoying and i feel like the author wanted to have SOMETHING going on w them but there was nothing? some parts she just didn't even feel like kara, she just felt like some random girl who calls herself supergirl. the bit at the end w ice was cute ig, and any krypto appearances are a major plus. i dunno it was okay just felt like it was jumping around a lot

It's alright. It started strong then began faltering a few chapters in. I love the concept behind it and I'm usually game for any chance to see the cosmic side of the DC Universe, especially if it features The Omega Men. Still, inconsistent artwork and kind of pedestrian writing does this, a must read, not make. I'll try another volume to see if it gets better but it is what it is and my expectations are low at this point.

This was actually pretty solid. I enjoy space stories, and this was a pretty actiony one! I also love Krypto!
The art is pretty good as well, somewhere between the first issues and the last. I also like that Green Lanterns are in it as well, though I do wish her time as a Red was mentioned but, overall pretty good. I do recommend reading the Superman that lead to this, as I am a little confused on quite a bit due to not reading it...

Feels weirdly finally inconsistent with contemporary comics. Much of the story reads and feels like something from a few decades ago. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does kinda result in a comic and story that feels weirdly insubstantial.

There are a lot of weird similarities between this book and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. I think I prefer the latter for its ambition.

Good Kevin Maguire art, though.
